WELCOME TO ISSUE SIXTY ONE OF THE DRESSAGE NZ BULLETIN
s this issue goes live I will be winging my way to Herning, several flight cancellations and changes later. But no doubt many others are in the same position with seriously disrupted travel right across Europe. The travel disruptions appear to have had an impact on the OC ability to attract volunteers for the Championships – they are still advertising to fill a number of positions including stable entrance controllers, laundry working between 6pm and 9am, prize giving and shuttle drivers. I hope you will all take the time to read the Championships preview which includes some pinnacle event history. It was really interesting to revisit our progress since the 1998 Rome trailblazers who have given us inspiration spanning twenty-four years. New Zealand fans should be very proud that all three of our team members have trained their own horses from the get-go. I wonder how many of the other eighteen teams can claim this? On the home front the annual conference and committee meeting in Christchurch had positive vibe. The keynote speaker Todd Astle (Black Cap cricketer) led a powerful presentation on the well-being of athletes and dangers of social media and inappropriate personal culture across the whole spectrum of sport. This will be more fully reported in our next issue, but the end result was the question not how to deal with these issues, but how we can prevent them – let’s not think of ourselves as the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. The Dressage for Denmark Awards Dinner, prizegivings and auction were a huge success with members attending from as far away as Northland and Invercargill. On behalf of the team, Melissa, Gaylene and John, thank you to everyone who has contributed in any way to the Herning campaign. Your support means a huge amount as they undertake their final preparation and travel.

ot knowing if they would get to line up at the one of the biggest and most acclaimed shows in the world did not detract from Melissa's focus and preparation. “My goal was to get 70% plus here (in Europe) in the Grand Prix so I am just absolutely thrilled that I did! And to get 70% here (at Aachen) of all places and to think there is more to come yet! I can’t believe I miscounted the one times though – I was so sure I did fifteen. I feel so grateful just to have had the opportunity to compete at such a prestigious equestrian event. To come home with a new personal best in the Grand Prix of over 70% and then to top it off with a 6th place in the Grand Prix special on over 71% was just unbelievable!!! The feeling between Joey and I in the Grand Prix special was something I will not forget in a hurry! I was also fortunate enough to be the New Zealand representative in the farewell of the nations ceremony with my gorgeous borrowed horse Ludca - what an amazing experience to be a part of - if you ever get the chance to go to Aachen to either compete or watch I think it really has to be done. I wish to thank Anne van Olst so much for your incredible training and support - we wouldn’t be here without you. And to the rest of the team at Van Olst horses thank you so much for all your support and encouragement! Now we look forward to what will be the most exciting event of the year! INTERNATIONAL NEWS COFFEE AND CATCHUPS Melissa Galloway and Andrea Raves reunited and catching up between classes at CHIO Aachen
The CDIO official team event served as a World Championships selection trial for a number of nations expected to be prominent at Herning. A total of eight teams of three or four combinations contested the team competition in the Grand Prix and Special. The scores in the table are represented by adding the best three % earned in each class. Of interest the top three scores (best performances) of the selected New Zealand team riders averages 70.065%. Andrea Raves, who Melissa credits for coaching input over the years back in New Zealand and marks Aachen on her annual to do calendar was again at the event and was able to get a close up view of the Special thanks to a last-minute accreditation organised by ESNZ High Performance. The retirement celebration of Bella Rose (Isabell Werth) after the Grand Prix Special was a moving spectacle, celebrated by a sellout crowd of fans which meant there was not a single general admission seat left for that session.

FixCalm
FOR EQUINE
MAG + THIAMINE SUPPLEMENT
ENHANCES PERFORMANCE REDUCES STRESS Benefits of FixCalm Thiamine is essential for neural cell metabolism and neurotransmitter production. It is implicated in controlling inflammation and in antioxidation and assists in wound healing and promoting calm behaviour. Magnesium is involved in various essential processes including nerve function, as an enzyme activator in blood and muscle contraction. Magnesium is often described as the ‘chill mineral’ as it prevents the stress hormone cortisol from affecting the brain. It can support muscle function and improve recovery rates after hard work.

HYGAIN & MITAVITE NUTRITION
TO HARD FEED OR NOT TO HARD FEED – THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF AN EASY KEEPER HORSE Easy keeper horses are great for the bank accounts but can often cause as much worry for their owners as the ones that require hefty amounts of feed and what feels like a second mortgage to keep them looking the million dollars you spend on them! 12 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | AUGUST 2022
HYGAIN & MITAVITE NUTRITION
A
lthough the grass may not be as plentiful now as earlier in the year there is still some there which your horse seems to manage to hoover up quite nicely and not a wisp of hay gets left behind! In the summer grass intake is strictly managed. Your horse is looking great without much effort but is he is getting all that he needs out of grass, hay, a few supplements and a handful of hard feed with a dipper of chaff? Many easy keeper types are prone to metabolic disorders down the track as they get older if their base nutritional needs have not been addressed adequately. Although they appear to be doing well on the outside they may not always be getting the required nutrients to maintain immune system health, joint flexibility, hoof integrity, muscle function and repair. Metabolic problems aren’t always seen until they have become chronic issues with vets, body workers and farriers involved.
WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS ARE FOR THESE HORSES? Homemade feeds – most of these diets consist of basics like chaff, beet pulp, soya hulls, copra and a handful of commercial feed or grain mixed with added supplements of choice. Depending on the cost of the supplements added this can work reasonably well and is simple - just remember to do the sums in your head, if you are adding three different supplements that all
contain a little bit of selenium or if there is more than one source of copper and zinc going in then you need to know the exact amount of minerals going into the diet. Sometimes you will be overdosing, more frequently underdosing and we all know exactly how much zinc our horse needs to receive a day to stay healthy right? The right type of protein is frequently missed in these diets, but this tends to go unnoticed until the horse loses weight/fat and lack of musculature becomes apparent. Concentrate feeds are designed to be fed at 500g to 1kg. Concentrates are designed to deliver all the minerals and vitamins that a horse requires, most will also deliver a percentage of good quality protein and amino acids. Reputable feed manufacturers will have the relevant analysis and feeding rates on the
"...just remember to do the sums in your head, if you are adding three different supplements that all contain a little bit of selenium or if there is more than one source of copper and zinc going in then you need to know the exact amount of minerals going into the diet. "
bags to take the guess work out. These are great for horses that are easy keepers, spelling horses, low level competition, final trimester of pregnancy or recovering from injury. They tend to be pelleted so some horses may sieve them out. Semi-Concentrate feeds normally have a feeding rate between 1.5-3kg and again will be chock full of all the amino acids, minerals, vitamins and a quantity of good quality protein to ensure the nutritional needs of the horse are being met. These may be more suitable for the easy keeper that is also in more intense training or competing regularly as they require more calories to allow for the demands of work. Complete feeds are designed to start at about 2.5kg and go up to 8kg dependant on the requirement of the horse being fed. They tend to be cheaper by the bag than concentrate or semi-concentrate feeds because of the volume being fed but the mineral component required by your easy keeper are diluted by the volume that needs to be fed so by this design aren’t really suitable for them. If you are having difficulty sorting out a diet don’t be shy to use diet programmes such as Nutrikey, for free practical advice. Most feed companies have access to a qualified nutritionist who should also be able to help you work out where your horses diet should be and what will work practically for both your horse and how you like to feed if you decide to go that way. ECCO FEI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS | HERNING DENMARK 2022
IT'S VERY NEARLY SHOWTIME IN HERNING Article by Wendy Hamerton
As a country we can be incredibly proud of this team... All horses have been trained throughout their careers by their current riders, and the average age of the horses is just eleven – young in international terms. It is unlikely that any other team at Herning can match these two facts.
“
Chef DÉquipe Wendy Hamerton (Taranaki) 18 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | AUGUST 2022
1998 was a memorable year when I provided administrative support to the late Jude Simpson who took our first team to a World Championships in Rome. I could not have imagined back then that it would be twenty-four years before New Zealand would field a team again and that I would have the responsibility as Chef DÉquipe at the 2022 ECCO FEI World Dressage Championships in Denmark. It really is a privilege and I’m so proud of how far our sport has come thanks to the hard work and dedication of so many individuals. I look forward to supporting Melissa, Gaylene, and John as they compete alongside the world’s best.”
ECCO FEI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS | HERNING DENMARK 2022 Cindy Kent and Playskool, pictured here with the late Claire Tulloch at the World Equestrian Games in Rome 1998
A SPOT OF HISTORY FOR YOU I have been very fortunate over the years to have had the opportunity to support teams and individuals, some on borrowed horses, at a number of Sydney CDI events and the World Games in Tryon in 2018. Every event is different. There have been split venue events with their accompanying rules and subsequent challenges. There was a special 2008 Olympic qualifying event (Hong Kong / Beijing Olympics) at Tielcey Park near Palmerston North during the EHV outbreak when horses could not travel to the Group qualifying event in Australia. This resulted in horses competing in Europe (Japan & AUS Australia (AUS & NZL) and New Zealand (NZL only) and the Judges travelled to the horses. The team was Jody Hartstone (Landioso), Bill Noble (Vincent St James), Kallista Field (Soda) and Nicole Magoffin (Jaybee Anzac) who competed in Australia. In 2011 as a qualifier for the London Olympics 2012, there was another split event to deal with – this time in Europe where Australia had two horses competing, and in Australia where there were two AUS combinations and the NZL team of Louisa Hill (Antonello) Shiwon Green (Gosh) Vanessa Way KH Arvan, Nicki Pope (Fabarchie) and Kieryn Walton (Saraceni) as travelling reserve. New Zealand qualified a team for London but could not meet the FEI and NZOC team criteria resulting in just one individual, Louisa Hill, lining up at the London Olympics. In 1998 our average score in Rome was 60.54%, 2011 qualifier team score average 64.922% and in 2022 our individual CDI average personal best of team members currently trends at 70.054%. That’s how far we have come.

QUICK FACTS • The top 6 teams qualify their nation for a team slot at Paris Olympics 2024. • To qualify directly for Paris as a team New Zealand must either finish in the top 6, or be the top placed Group G nation. • Only three Group G nations have announced selected teams. Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. • There is no direct Paris individual qualification from Herning. This can only come from the World Rankings at a later date. • Thirty four nations will present ninety five horses and riders. • Twenty one countries have announced teams... Australia Austria Belgium Brazil Denmark Finland France Germany Great Britain Hungary Ireland Japan Netherlands New Zealand Norway Poland Portugal Spain Sweden Switzerland USA • Teams are drawn in groups of 5 depending on the average number of world ranking points of team riders. • The team and CDE in collaboration will decide the order of start of each team member. The CDE submits the order to the OC in a sealed envelope. • As we has only three riders the first New Zealand team slot is unallocated. • The return airfare for a horse from New Zealand to Frankfurt is $82,000 including quarantine on the way home.

THE ALL-IMPORTANT GROOMS
JAX JOHNSON ABBIE DEKEN (NEW PLYMOUTH) What an opportunity to be a part of an exciting New Zealand team! I feel grateful and privileged to be asked. I last groomed at World Champs twenty years ago for Kallista Field in 2002 in Jerez Spain (still one of my life highlights) so it will be interesting to see how things have changed a couple of decades down the track!! I have watched Vanessa work with Gaylene and Jax for years now so it will be so nice to be a part of her team at this pinnacle event - making sure “Jax” is feeling well will be my first priority and hopefully taking some pressure off Gaylene so she can focus on what she needs to do. It will also be fantastic to reconnect with the other team members and their support crews and of course absorb and learn from watching the best in the world!
G
rooms are such essential team members looking after their horses 24/7. They get to know every nuance of behaviour and must officially take the horses temperatures twice a day beginning three days before the event. This is recorded in an FEI monitored app as a precaution against the highly transmissible EHV1 virus. NZL Grooms will be accommodated in caravans in the grooms village and have access to the grooms lounge and meals.
CHEMISTRY ELLEN SUANN (BERRILEE - NSW, AUS) Following ten wonderful years with Mulawa Arabian Stud I am the recently appointed Performance Horse Manager for Mulawa Performance Horses. It has been a dream come true to have a career I truly love in the horse industry largely due to the Farrell family who have shared their knowledge and beautiful horses with me for over a decade now. I have always been drawn to the hotter horses and fell in love with the Arabians for their charisma and heart and now that has organically evolved into a love of dressage and warmbloods for those same reasons. Horses have taken me around the world cheering on our horses in Las Vegas, Aachen and now Herning. I couldn’t be more thrilled to be joining Chemistry, John and the Kyros family at the World Championships.
WINDERMERE J'OBEI W SARAH PARKES – SEUFERT (BLENHEIM) Grooming at the ECCO FEI World Dressage Championships in Herning is such an amazing opportunity on its own let alone grooming for my beautiful sister! I love being involved in her journey and this is such an exciting time for the whole family! To see Melissa's dreams from when she was about 10 years old now become a reality is just amazing and seeing how far Melissa and Joey have come over the last 8 years is such a thrill. I’m so excited to be there every step of the way to support her and Joey. AUGUST 2022 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | 21

JAN BIRD - WINNER OF THE KAYE FISSENDEN MEMORIAL TROPHY The Kaye Fissenden Memorial Trophy is awarded annually at the discretion of the Dressage NZ Board for an Outstanding Contribution to Dressage NZ.
D
ressage Wellington nominated Jan Bird for the for her dedication to Dressage in New Zealand for more than half a century.
outstanding in her role as both a National Judge Educator & Mentor and a long standing Area Judges Officer for Dressage Wellington for over twenty years.
Jan was first an FEI candidate (3*) Judge, then promoted to International FEI judge judging the FEI Dressage World Challenge and Pacific League World Cup Finals, she was an FEI Mentor and Young Horse Judge and officiated at numerous CDI events in New Zealand and offshore. But she was a 3* International Judge, New Zealand List 1 Judge and Technical Delegate for many years prior to that.
Jan gave numerous Judges Clinics over the years. Her ability to explain movements clearly with the help of the demonstration riders was fabulous. We all loved her witty comments and the expressive way she kept us all captivated and keen to learn. She never hesitated to pass her knowledge on with kindness and enthusiasm.
She was awarded Dressage NZ Judge of the Year in 2014 following her retirement as an FEI Judge. Jan was extremely proud to be an international judge and loved travelling for her sport which she did energetically and with enthusiasm. Her contribution to Judging and Judges Development both nationally and regionally has indeed been 28 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | AUGUST 2022

With Jan’s extensive mentoring and encouragement I have worked my way up to a List A National Judge. She always made time for me to listen and discuss any problems I had, especially when I was going through the upgrading processes.”
Her interest in music and singing and international judging status added to her extensive musical freestyle knowledge.

DRESSAGE NZ BREEDER OF THE YEAR David Woolley David Woolley and Jax Johnson Photo: Hannah Comrie
David was unable to attend the Dressage NZ awards dinner and instead received his trophy at an ESNZ High Performance function held at Takapoto Estate where he was part of a think tank regarding NZ breeders and their valued contribution to our international aspirations.
A MESSAGE FROM DAVID “I’m very honoured to receive the inaugural Dressage Breeders Award from Dressage NZ. Breeding horses, just like producing a dressage horse is a very long game and it can take years to know if you have the recipe right. It also takes huge effort and expertise from the riders and trainers of your horses not just to train them but to keep them sound and happy in their work. It is this area that luck has truly been on my side. It also seems to me that we have some momentum in our sport right now and I plan to keep breeding the best horses I can for NZ riders so we can build on what we have already achieved. I’m so excited to get to watch Melissa, Gaylene and John next month in Herning so please raise your glasses and wish our riders and especially our horses, the best of luck!”
DRESSAGE NZ COACH OF THE YEAR Vanessa Way Vanessa received this inaugural Coach of the Year Award for her contribution to the coaching of two World Championships team members, Gaylene Lennard and Melissa Galloway prior to her departure to van Olst stables in 2021. “I am super happy and so very proud to receive this recognition from Dressage NZ. To say this is an honour would be a massive understatement. I would like to thank Dressage NZ for their decades of input into my coaching / training and education. Firstly, through squad training, judges’ seminars, and masterclasses I had the opportunity to be educated and mentored by Michael Putz (GER)” Vanessa acknowledges and credits a number of trainers she has worked with during her career to date for the knowledge she is able to impart. Carl Hester, who needs no further introduction, Olympic and World Medallist Harry Boldt, NZ trainers Bill Noble, Kallista Field, Andrea Raves (who always offers me a kind word and advice today) Fiona Craig and Dan Greenwood also continues to help me via online lessons and video review from the UK. “Finally, the biggest thank you to my incredible pupils for allowing me to be part of your own dressage dreams”. 30 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | AUGUST 2022

Karmargen Fairplay Award Windsor Lad Trophy plus $500 Training Grant presented by Peter & Karen Trotter
Dressage Otago nominated the mother and daughter combination of Anna & Janet Smithson as worthy recipients of the 2022 Karmargen Fairplay Award Anna Smithson (16) is one of their most valued members, competing at Introductory level. One of the most appreciated contributions she makes at an event is offering to escort young horses and other combinations who may appear to be a bit nervous getting from their float or yard over to the warmup area, and again back after their test. She always waits around after her own test if she is drawn later in the field to make sure no one is left out in the competition area alone. She is always happy to put her horse Flicka in the next door yard to any unsettled horse, and Flicka (an opiniated mare) promptly sorts out her new neighbour and calms them down! Anna and her mum Janet help put up and take down arenas, call tests, and support anyone who comes in contact with them. They are collectively responsible for the very pleasant and supportive atmosphere around the training and unregistered classes at our events. Janet has also offered to take on the writers’ convenor role for our group. Janet and Anna are true game changers in our sport – thank you.

DEMOS & DISCUSSIONS PROVE VALUABLE IN NORTHLAND Story by Dressage Northland & Dressage NZ
A great turnout of sixty riders including a number from local pony clubs, and judges attended the Dressage Northland discussion day held at the RDA Indoor arena at Whangarei’s Barge Park. All fourteen listed Northland judges plus three trainee judges took advantage of the opportunity.
O
rganised by the Dressage Northland judges committee led by Carol Going. Contributions of time and energy by Lois Andrewes, Kaye Ahsam, Janet Fox, Julie Harrisson, Judith Matthews, and Debbie Rivers helped produce pamphlets which were added to the handout information packs. Dressage NZ funding enabled Dressage Northland to cover the cost of hiring the indoor arena and assist with travelling costs for the riders. A very big thank you to Dressage NZ for their support. First into the arena was Nikita Osborne riding Sansa SF and Mihi Shepherd on Freya SF, two quality three year old fillies bred by Nikita at her Seaforth Farms. It was the first time out for both horses they demonstrated Training and Preliminary movements. One

filly was a little tense which was noticeable and what we often see in the competition arena, given a little time it was satisfying to see her relax and show her true movement and potential. A good discussion point. Helen McGrath and her event horse demonstrated Preliminary and Novice movements and demonstrated well that you do not need what may be considered a purpose bred dressage horse to get good marks. It just has to be trained as per the all-important scale of training. Thanks to Olivia Chuck and her pony Mr McCloud and Kaye Ahsam (Gerricho LPE) for capably demonstrating Elementary and Medium and to Judith Matthews who travelled all the way down from Kaitaia with Fanfare MH and Georgia MH together with their riders Casey Johnson and Reece Downham. These
horses are working at Advanced and Small Tour and made it look all so smooth and easy. Nikita and her old friend Alfie (Alacatraz) then produced a treat for us all, having fun showing half passes, passage, the difference between medium and extended trot and finished with tempi changes. Alfie is now retired from competition and Nikita is giving lessons on him to lucky riders who want to feel how to achieve the advanced movements. Alfie of course only does them when the correct aids are given! All the riders coped very well with being asked to make deliberate mistakes and it was good to see quarters leading, trailing, too much neck bend etc and then seeing the movements ridden correctly. Thank you and well done to all of the riders.

DENMARK SECURES ANOTHER NATIONS CUP VICTORY AHEAD OF HERNING Article by Catie Staszak Photos by Leanjo de Koster
A
compact but accomplished field lined up for the finale of the 2022 FEI Dressage Nations Cup™ series at Falsterbo (SWE), including the top two teams in the standings, but that didn't stop Denmark from running away with the competition. The win marked a second straight victory for the Danish squad after triumphing in Aachen two weeks ago. The four-rider team of Nanna Skodborg Merrald (Blue Hors. St. Schufro), Nadja Aaboe Sloth (Favour Gersdorf), Anna Kasprzak (Addict de Massa) and Daniel Bachmann 50 | DRESSAGENZ BULLETIN | AUGUST 2022
Andersen (Zippo M.I.) impressed with their consistent excellence across the Grand Prix, Grand Prix Special and Grand Prix Freestyle tests. The group finished on a total of just 14 points, well ahead of The Netherlands (30 points) and Sweden (31).
Sweden's Patrik Kittel shone individually aboard the 14-year-old Oldenburg gelding Blue Hors Zepter, winning the Grand Prix (75.261%) and finishing second in the Freestyle (80.865%), but it was not enough to hold off Denmark. In fact,

"There has not been one ride we came away feeling poorly about. Everyone really delivered. I'm so proud to be a part of this team." Daniel Bachmann Andersen (DEN)
Danish riders took up two-thirds of the podium in every test. They shared the wealth. Bachmann Andersen performed best for his team in the Grand Prix, finishing second with Zippo M.I. on a score of 75.043% before topping the Special on 73.723%. Both scores were personal bests for him and his 10-year-old mount. "He's quite a green horse. This was just his sixth show at the Grand Prix level," Bachmann Andersen said. "He's shown a lot of quality, and he's improved since his last show. Overall, I'm happy with his development. He has had a good experience here. It's all a part of the journey." Nanna Skodborg Merrald stole the spotlight in the Freestyle, taking the win with 11-year-old Blue Hors St. Schufro in what was the stallion's debut in the test. Inexperience did not prove to be a hindrance, as the pair received a top score of 81.080%. I'm really happy and really proud of my horse," Merrald said. "He's still very green, and this was his first Grand Prix Freestyle ever. It's not a freestyle I've made for him, so there was a little bit of improvising. In the end, he did really well. There were some small misunderstandings, but overall, I had a clean test without big mistakes, and I'm really happy with that."
Nadja Aaboe Sloth and Favour Gersdorf.
The win leaves the squad feeling confident as they make their final preparations for the upcoming FEI World Dressage Championships on home soil in Herning (DEN). "It's always fantastic to have a Nations Cup, where you can come out and train to be a team and compete as a team before going out for a World Championship," Bachmann Andersen said. "It's always bigger pressure riding for an entire team, and it's good to be trying out different combinations and see how everyone is riding on a team." Although finishing third, Sweden still came away with a victory, having secured the 2022 FEI Dressage Nations Cup™ series title before competition began. With
less than four teams competing at Falsterbo, the event did not count for series points. Sweden, also finishing on the podium at Compiegne (FRA), Rotterdam (NED) and Aachen (GER), completed the season with 37 points. The Netherlands finished second on 24 points, with Spain third (20 points). "We were very strong from the beginning. At every show, we had a different team, and that is a strength of the country to have four different teams and be on the podium every time," said Sweden's chef d'equipe Bo Jena. "The experience we get from Nations Cup competitions are [ones] we take with us to the next show, the next year and for the future."

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH ANGIE TAYLOR Angie has been nominated by Dressage Waikato as the Big Barrel's Volunteer of the Month.
D
ressage Waikato would like to acknowledge and thank Rotorua’s Angie Taylor for her tremendous support as a writer at countless dressage events at Taupo and Rotorua, which include local, regional and national shows. Angie is always the first to volunteer to write. She prebooks her favourite portacom Number 4 (pity help any OC if they have to allocate that to someone else; she arrives onsite two days early and is always happy to help in any way needed in the leadup to the event. Angie comes well prepared with extra blankets and pillows for her fellow portacom campers and makes sure everyone is sorted when they arrive. Her dedication to writing is huge – she loves lower level classes and is clear that musicals and high level classes are best left to the younger writers. Her car is always available to be used, and she is never, never late for a class. She always has a smile on her face, and always thanks us for the enjoyable experience after the show. We truly value the contribution that Angie makes to the Dressage Community in the Bay of Plenty, and also for Dressage Waikato when we host events at Taupo and we would love for her to be recognised as Volunteer of the Month. Dressage NZ also pays tribute to Angie’s
