LETTER FROM THE MAYOR
Welcome to Germantown: Letter from the Mayor
Having a healthy community is vital to the quality of life we enjoy here in Germantown and few Tennessee cities are as committed as we are to making the place we call home healthier. Selected by Governor Haslam as one of only 9 cities statewide to receive the Healthier Tennessee Community designation, Germantown is taking community wellness very seriously. To further this effort, we created the Healthy Germantown initiative to both encourage and support residents to live their best life by moving more, eating smarter, and cutting out tobacco. There is something to match just about any healthy interest here in Germantown. Bike and pedestrian lanes and paths are ever expanding. Germantown’s Bobby Lanier Farm Park grows and harvests vegetables for most of the year and hosts a farmers market during the summer months. For those with a competitive spirit, Germantown boasts opportunities for disc golf, croquet, adult kickball, and a variety of children’s and adult sports leagues. Families can enjoy the Germantown Greenway trail system that winds along the banks of the Wolf River or run and play at one of the community parks providing 700 acres of green space in the city.
Mayor Mike Palazzolo, City of Germantown
“We created the Healthy
Germantown is committed to being healthy in other ways too. We’re raising healthy minds in our Germantown Municipal School District, which has the highest ACT score in the state of Tennessee. We are healthy financially, with a Triple-A bond rating from both Moody’s and Standard and Poor’s. Our economy is healthy with a growing medical community and a thriving retail presence. And our public safety response times are among the best in the region, an average of six minutes or less for fire and ambulance response and four minutes or less for police emergency response.
Germantown initiative
With over 15 fitness-based businesses as well as our very own Germantown Athletic Club, it’s easy to find a way to be active and part of our Healthy Germantown community. So take a look around, spend some time with us. Experience our Healthy Germantown. We hope you’ll stay.

LETTER FROM THE CHAMBER
Welcome to Germantown:
Letter from the Chairman of the Chamber Board As your Chairman of the Board of Directors for the 2017 Germantown Area Chamber of Commerce, I want to share my excitement for the growth of our vibrant city, the partnerships we currently have and those we will embrace in 2017. We only have to glance at all corners of our city to see the positive change. From the new Western Gateway to the improvements being made in the Forest Hill Heights area, it’s clear the city is going to be a wonderful new place to live, work, and play. The partnership with the city’s Economic Development Division and the chamber has goals in retail recruitment revitalization strategy and marketing. For the 4th year, the city and the chamber will partner to produce the Germantown Business and Industry Summit along with the annual report. The chamber is also involved in a partnership with the Education Foundation for a city-wide event for all citizens to enjoy in the fall of 2017. All of these plans and partnerships are a part of the strategic plan named #GermantownForward2030. Leaders and citizens of all ages, including two local high school students from Houston and Germantown High Schools, worked for 7 months in 2016 to create #GermantownForward2030. The city and the chamber are following that plan in all of our initiatives in the coming year. As I begin my year as your new chairman of the Board of Directors for the 2017 Germantown Area Chamber of Commerce, I look forward to our growth, our partnerships, and our opportunities to improve our vibrant community.

he church that sits on the property owned by Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital reflects a deeply rooted history rich with colorful details and an enduring spirit. History matters. History teaches us all where we come from. History teaches us life lessons. History binds us together. “A sense of history is really important,” says William Kenley, CEO for Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital. “Germantown doesn’t have a town square, but it does have this church which presents a unique look inside our history as a community.” Originally called New Hope Church in 1835 with just 49 members, the site of the chapel sanctuary was donated in 1841 and the church was renamed Baptist Church of Germantown. By 1860, church membership had grown to 67 white and 38 black members. Then, during the Battle of Memphis in June of 1862, Federal troops burned the church. In 1870, the church was rebuilt with money the congregation received from the United States Congress as part of its war reparations.
There are a number of interesting stories involving the church. The London foundry that made the Liberty Bell is believed to have created the bell inside the church. The tin around the church steeple is nearly all original and so is the ball on top. The trajectory of the 50-caliber musket holes through that steeple indicate that it rested on the ground and Union soldiers most likely used it as target practice. During the restoration, burnt bricks were found under the building. They were original to the first building during the war. In 1975, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and Methodist Germantown acquired the chapel when it purchased the hospital and land in 1993. After nearly 150 years, the Historic Church at Germantown has been restored through the efforts of both Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital and the Methodist Healthcare Foundation. Named after a gift made by Ed and Nancy Barnett, the interior of the Barnett Chapel showcases the original ceiling and floor of the church made of hard river pine. The
pews which came from a different church are from the 1930’s, and the double front doors were made to look exactly like the original doors. Charles Salvaggio led the restoration project, and had the moldings taken down and replicated. His team took pictures of the trim so it could also be replicated. Period-appropriate colors were also used. The restoration is now complete and next year, the church will be available for the community to use for weddings, meetings, and other events.

JO REED AWARD WINNER
2016 Jo Reed Award Winner: Joanna Young Excellence in Community Service
Each year, the The Leadership Germantown Alumni Association sponsors the Jo Reed Community Service Award. In the spirit of giving that makes Germantown such a great place to live and work, this award is presented each year to an individual who represents sincere caring and volunteerism for the community, with no concern for applause or thank you. Joanna Young is the 2016 recipient of the Jo Reed Award for community service. Joanna is the founder of Cop Stop, a program that encourages residents to provide meals and fellowship for their local police officers. Nearly twenty years ago, Joanna and her husband, Bob, a former Marine, began inviting fellow soldiers to their home to provide a sense of community for single men who did not otherwise have many home-cooked meals by hosting a weekly “Friday Night Steak Night.” Joanna realized local police officers could benefit from fellowship and home-cooked meals as well. “The inspiration behind Cop Stop was to provide a place where officers and residents can get to know each other by providing a home-cooked meal,” said Joanna. “The program serves those who serve us by providing a homecooked meal to our police and fire departments. It also lets the police officers know that, in spite of what they see in our society today, there are residents in the communities they serve who appreciate and support them.” Hosts are encouraged to get their neighbors involved and help host their Cop Stop, giving neighbors an opportunity to come together and work together towards one mission: serving those who serve us. The Cop Stop program currently has 25 chapters in 7 states and is continually growing. Recently, residents in Atlanta, California, Oregon, and the United Kingdom have expressed an interest in starting their own chapters. Several communities in Shelby County currently participate in Cop Stop, including Germantown, Bartlett, Arlington and Lakeland, Cordova and Appling Farms, Memphis, the Evergreen Historic District, the Vollintine Historic District, and Millington. Please visit www.cop-stop.org to learn more about serving those who serve us and to find volunteer opportunities in your local area.

about the jo reed award Jo Reed was a pillar of volunteerism as well as kindness in the Germantown Community. She was an active member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Germantown, several senior citizen groups, the Germantown Performing Arts Center, Shelby County Republican Women, a charter member and president of the English Meadows Homeowners’ Association, as well as the Germantown Environmental Commission. She spent countless hours assisting at City Hall with various tasks, including stuffing envelopes, addressing mailings, assisting with census projects, volunteering for Amnesty Days, and numerous other projects. She was also a regular at City meetings, rarely missing a Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting. She was tragically killed in an accident in 1996. This award lives on in her honor.

longstanding symbol of art and entertainment in the community, the Germantown Community Theatre will celebrate its 45th anniversary this year. The four major components of their mission are to entertain, educate, engage, and enrich. “I love that we fulfill our mission in every decision we make,” said Former Executive Director Dr. Michael Miles. “We have an equal share in production and entertainment value with education by enriching the lives of the people who come to us. I think so often theatre gets thrown aside by the general public because of the entertainment value. If it weren’t for enriching work we do, there wouldn’t be the amount of educational programming in the community that there is today.” The GCT has resided in a turn-of-thecentury schoolhouse located on Forest Hill Irene that was donated by the

City of Germantown since 1981. What were originally classrooms are now one big office shared by GCT staff, and the former cafeteria with a built-in stage is still in use today, although it has been enlarged. Since then, minor renovations and major structural work including fixing the roof and leaks and updating the plumbing have taken place under Dr. Miles. The old stage was torn out, and a new stage put in. The lobby was also expanded.
Each year from September through May, GCT productions can be enjoyed by the whole family. From All My Sons by Arthur Miller to Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street to A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, the theatre has seen great success in recent years. In 2015, GCT received several Ostrander Awards and 20 nominations for their work. 18 Years and Counting
Germantown is honored (again) by the National Arbor Day Foundation
T
his year marks the 18th consecutive year Germantown holds the honor of being a Tree City USA award winner. The city has also received recognition for significant enhancements to its urban forestry program for the fourth year in a row. Thanks to the City of Germantown’s continued efforts to provide a healthier, greener community, we are able to enjoy a variety of benefits from our natural neighbors.
The Tree City USA program, sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation, seeks to provide citizens with communities actively engaged in providing a greener, healthier living space. In addition to providing natural landscaping and picturesque scenery, trees provide an important function in the cycle of life. According to the Arbor Day Foundation, Tree City USA destinations are reaping the rewards in a variety of ways. A few benefits Germantown residents receive from the inclusion of trees in the urban forestry program include: Reduced costs for energy. Studies indicated that as few as three additional trees planted around each building in the United States could save $2 billion annually in energy costs. Scientists with the U.S. Forest Service report that a tree planted today on the west side of a house can reduce energy bills by 3 percent in only five years, or 12 percent annually in 15 years. Increased property values. Properly placed trees can increase property values by up to 20 percent. Buildings in wooded areas rent more quickly, and their tenants tend to stay longer. Public health and wellness. Research suggests that trees can facilitate mental restoration; reduce depression, anxiety, anger, mental fatigue, and stress; focus attention and improve concentration; and encourage healthy outdoor activities for both young and old. Environmental services. Trees clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and pollutants that trigger asthma while providing life-sustaining oxygen. Shade from trees cools the urban landscape. Stormwater runoff can be reduced by tree canopies as much as 65 percent, reducing flooding.
DID YOU KNOW? One large tree can provide up to a day’s support of oxygen for up to four people. Forested watersheds provide quality drinking water to more than 180 million Americans. Trees lower surface and air temperatures by providing shade. Shaded temperatures can be up to 45°F cooler than unshaded temperatures. *Facts and information provided by the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Healthy Activities Abound
Germantown is West Tennessee’s First Healthy Tennessee Community, and for Good Reason
W
ith nearly two dozen parks, sports complexes, and green spaces covering more than 700 acres of recreational land, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities for the whole family to enjoy in Germantown. At least one athletic field or court, picnic area, biking / walking trail, playground or facility is within a half mile of each and every home. Youth sports are plentiful, including football, baseball, softball, and soccer, with additional sports such as lacrosse and rugby recently added to the mix. Safe, clean, attractive, litter-free outdoor areas maintained by the department of Parks and Recreation are provided for the enjoyment of residents. Police and park rangers patrol the areas often, and volunteer groups provide additional cleanup and watch patrols. The City of Germantown has made extensive efforts to provide citizens with access to a variety of outdoor areas in an effort to increase an awareness of the importance of health and wellness. The Germantown Wellness Council is a large reason these initiatives are taking place.
“Health is the new wealth, and in Germantown, the more outdoor activities we provide, the greater our residents’ quality of life,” says Germantown Wellness Council Co-Chair Alderman Forrest Owens. “This year Germantown was selected as West Tennessee’s first Healthy Tennessee Community by Governor Bill Haslam’s office. The ‘Healthy Germantown’ initiative seeks to aid resident wellness goals by providing opportunities for physical activity, healthy eating, and tobacco cessation.” With an outstanding infrastructure and an abundance of outdoor opportunities for residents to enjoy, it’s easy to see why so many families make Germantown home. Owens and others have made the city a shining example of a community with healthy, active residents. “One needs only to step outdoors anywhere in Germantown to be within a half mile of a city park. Our newly opened Greenway system along the Wolf River provides up close and personal interaction with nature, but also a chance to walk, run, and bike off the beaten path. Family activities are available which encourage exercise and outdoors. We continue to add bicycle lanes throughout the city to encourage not only recreation and fitness but also alternate modes of transportation. We now also host several races throughout the year which include the Germantown Mayor’s Cup 5K and half marathon along with the Germantown Race for Education 5K and Color Run.”

The second phase of funding has now been secured and will pay for a gathering plaza, outdoor classroom, site signage, a recognition stone, and elevated sand boxes. Eventually, the park will also include an entrance arch, nature screens, interactive play gardens, and more. Wolf River Nature Area • Nestled along the Wolf River, the 70-acre nature reserve within the Greenway provides a unique nature experience. The area features seven educational stations, plant displays, two picnic areas, scenic overlooks, rest areas, and restrooms. The Riverwoods State Nature Area • Riverwoods is a 21-acre natural area located along the Wolf River. Riverwoods is situated in a densely urban setting, but provides refuge for plants and wildlife. It is a small biological island that was formerly part of a larger forested area. Although Riverwoods is a state natural area, the City of Germantown manages the area and has developed a primitive trail system and raised boardwalks.

ealth and fitness is a vital part of the thriving community of Germantown. From an abundance of recreational activities for the whole family to plenty of fitness options for all ages and sizes, staying in shape and leading a healthy lifestyle is not only accessible, it’s enjoyable. From pilates to weight lifting to fitness classes for seniors, Germantown has fitness for all.

John Irvine, the owner/operator of the two Memphis-area Iron Tribes says, “What I love the most about my job is seeing people from all different fitness backgrounds transforming their lives through this program. SENIOR FITNESS Germantown also offers a variety of fitness classes and programs for senior citizens. Resident Judy Oros teaches a Stretch and Balance class at the Owings Life Enrichment Center as well as a Seniors on Strength class at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays. She also works out on a steady basis with seniors in the weight room, and the impact of both activities is impressive. “Most participants are aged 55 - 90, but the trend I’m seeing is that even 48-year-olds who haven’t worked out in the past at all are fitting in,” says Judy. “We welcome anyone who is comfortable using a chair or ballet bar without needing to be lifted up.” First timers tend to step into the room seemingly shy and a bit fearful to participate, but after just one class, their demeanor, attitude, and the way they carry themselves changes. By the fourth class, they are pros and meet and greet all the newcomers! Everyone becomes fast-friends. The social aspect of the class is a key ingredient. “I have seen unbelievable changes in all my participants in a short period of time,” says Judy. “One of the biggest changes I see is the fact that the seniors become seemingly much more independent, probably due to the fact that they feel better, have this new sense of control, and are accomplishing something they never thought they could do. Plus they are learning new terminology, trying out new equipment, experimenting with new exercises, and they are all getting Fitbit’s and WWW.GERMANTOWNCHAMBER.COM | 37

Pure Barre offers one of the most unique fitness experiences in Germantown. The Pure Barre technique is low-impact, protecting your joints by avoiding any bouncing or jumping. Each strength section of the workout is followed by a stretching section in order to create long, lean muscles without bulk. The technique works to defy gravity by tapering everything in and lifting it up. In 55 minutes, you’ll achieve a workout concentrating on the areas women struggle with the most: hips, seat, abdominals, and arms. The concentration involved allows you to block out the stress of life for one hour, creating the mental benefits similarly obtained by the practice of yoga or meditation. As a result, a Pure Barre workout helps you achieve a transformed body and a clear head in just one hour. “It has been our biggest reward to see our clients’ confidence grow with each class and to see the lifelong friend-

CYCLE BAR If you’re looking for a unique workout that’s low impact and fun, consider making a visit to Cycle Bar, where beginners and novices alike enjoy a variety of cycling workouts that target the whole body. Cycle Bar is an indoor cycling studio that offers classes lasting 50 minutes long with 45-minute workouts and a 5-minute cooldown comprised of different intervals. The studio is completely black with LED lights with a concert-like atmosphere. Sprint challenges to music videos where guests can follow stats and classic performance-based ride are two of the most popular workouts. Speciality rides including a 75-minute endurance ride and a 35-minute surge ride are also offered. Weighted bars on each bike help to provide a total body workout. Cycle Bar owner Haley Arthur opened the fitness center in May of 2016 after visiting the franchise’s headquarters and realizing the need for a unique exercise experience in the Memphis area. Arthur and her husband have always been active and lovers of the outdoors and biking, so opening a business that helps their friends and neighbors achieve a healthy lifestyle felt like the right move. Cycle Bar’s Alex Driver believes the best part of Cycle Bar are its people. “Our number one goal is to create a community, and by doing that we make it a point to hit every single demographic. We have 16-year-olds and 80 year olds. We have first-timers. We have people looking to maintain a healthy

IRIS Symphony Orchestra
IRIS ORCHESTRA IRIS Orchestra, the resident orchestra at the Germantown Performing Arts Center, began as a bold experiment in September 2000. Still bold, and still experimenting, IRIS is embarking on its 17th season as a center of the cultural life of the Mid-South. IRIS boasts a stellar roster of talent from the leading orchestras and universities in the country, all of whom share a passionate commitment to the highest standards of performance. “IRIS Orchestra is proud to be the resident orchestra of the Germantown Performing Arts Center for the past 17 years,” said Executive Director Dave DePeters. “This season we will celebrate arts and culture of the Mid-South by focusing on what makes our region energetic and vital.” The foundation of the IRIS philosophy is the idea that the orchestra’s members do not simply alight several times a year and leave, but instead put down strong roots in the Germantown/Memphis community. A host family program creates lasting bonds between IRIS musicians and their local host families that extend far beyond the concert weeks each year. As a result, the musicians feel an extraordinary loyalty to IRIS and the community. More than 50 members of the orchestra have returned for more than 10 seasons, even as IRIS members and alumni have assumed leadership positions in some of the world’s foremost orchestras, including the Boston Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, 46 | GERMANTOWN 2017
the Philadelphia Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. Connection to the community both on and offstage is at the core of the IRIS mission. From the beginning, the orchestra has made a commitment to deepen and enrich musical education in the Mid-South. IRIS musicians also go out into the community to perform for and mentor students at public and private elementary, middle, and high schools. The orchestra’s world-renowned guest artists give master classes for students at The University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music. This year, the new Artist Fellowship program will mentor emerging young musicians of African-American and Hispanic descent who perform with IRIS Orchestra while serving as year-long mentors in the Memphis area elementary and middle school programs. Community engagement continues on the GPAC stage. For young members of the community, family concerts at GPAC combine an engaging performance with a hands-on “instrument petting zoo.” GPAC Youth Symphony Orchestra members attend IRIS dress rehearsals for free and have the opportunity to ask questions of both IRIS members and guest artists while participating in master classes for each section of the orchestra. Another program allows the Memphis Symphony Youth Program IRIS musicians rehearse a piece of music side by side, giving young musicians the chance to play alongside their counterparts in a first-rate professional ensemble.

The mission of the Germantown Education Foundation is to mobilize community resources to support schools and educational programs in the city of Germantown. Through grants, projects, and initiatives, the foundation helps advance the academic achievement of students by improving the quality of teaching and learning. Through a grant-driven program, the foundation awards funds to each of the schools for a variety of teaching, technology, and learning initiatives. Since the foundation is academically focused, grants are not given to athletic or extracurricular endeavors. Program Initiative Grants are awarded to both teachers and schools to support creative instructional approaches and major educational initiatives. In addition to grants, capital campaigns are enacted to enhance the school system. One example is the
EDUCATION Riverdale Elementary School Capital Campaign running from 2016 to 2020. This initiative will add classrooms, a fine arts center, a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) lab, a wellness and athletic center, and green space to our largest elementary school. Naming rights are available through this campaign. Each year, the foundation partners with The Knowledge Tree of Germantown for the Treasures for Teachers program, which provides each teacher in the Germantown Municipal School District with a $120 gift card to The Knowledge Tree. The GEF provides $100 and The Knowledge Tree adds an additional $20. Sponsorship opportunities are available. From 5Ks to grand openings, there are many creative ways the GEF works with businesses and organizations to raise funds and awareness for its grants and campaigns. For more information on sponsorship and the benefits it provides, visit their website at www.GermantownEducationFoundation.org.

EDUCATION Q: What improvements and new programs have schools fine arts, or a close examination of the counseling program received since creating the Germantown Municipal - we are invested in forging the best possible schools for School District? our children. A: One of our earliest initiatives was to expand our orchestra program into our elementary schools, making it a part of their music and art offerings. Riverdale has also seen several programmatic upgrades in academics, fine arts, and athletics. Houston High School added a state-of-theart television studio under a partnership with the City and PEG funding. The television studio creates live programming produced by students. We’ve added the AP Capstone coursework series, in which students take AP Seminar and Research - one of only four high schools in Tennessee who currently offers the prestigious course. We’ve updated the grading policy for the students in grades 6-8 to take some stress off of our middle school students. Middle school grades are no longer figured into high school GPA (even in the case of an eighth grader taking Algebra I, for example). An early interest of the district that continues through today is in developing the whole child. We were seeing our eighth graders, as young as twelve years old, already chasing valedictorian. It also was prohibiting to those who were concerned about the rigor of the class - and we want to encourage our students to take challenging classes. Our students are high achieving and tenacious, but I believe in opening up the rigorous coursework to everyone. GMSD for the second consecutive year has held the title for highest district ACT average in the entire state. We are also developing our students as citizens and our staff has furthered the model of our original Honors Academy by adding additional academies. The main premise whether it is the honors, the leadership, or the honors junior, is that they rely on the key components of small cohorts, mentorships, and leadership opportunities through community service. A new culture of service has developed in our schools. Germantown Municipal Schools are interested in looking at the needs of the child beyond the basic classroom. Whether that’s an increase in extra curricular offerings, a wide variety of electives, specialized degree paths in the
Q: Several schools in the district have received honors for high test scores and technological innovations. What measures were taken to help students reach their academic goals? In what other ways does the school board ensure the best quality education for Germantown students? A: Teachers are collaborating across grade levels, across schools, and disciplines to craft lessons that are meeting the needs of the individual child. A huge shift towards differentiation is occurring. We are monitoring progress, identifying deficits, and implementing instructional plans to meet students at their levels. This program has been so successful in helping our struggling students that several districts across the state are reaching out to us in an effort to duplicate the program. We are also rolling out a gradual shift to a 1:1 teacher to student ratio environment that blends technology with traditional teaching. In our second year, all students in grades 8 and 9 have been provided with a Macbook Air and are engaging in a new way of classroom learning. The program will expand to include grades 7-10. By 2019, all students in grades 6-12 will be equipped with a device that travels with them from classroom to the home.
GMSD AWARDS & ACCOLADES: From being named one of only eight exemplary districts by the State of Tennessee to a top workplace by The Commercial Appeal, the Germantown Municipal School District has received numerous accolades and honors. Individual schools have also received attention. Houston High School was named the #1 Public High School by the Memphis Business Journal and the #11 Best Public School in Tennessee by the U.S. News & World Report. WWW.GERMANTOWNCHAMBER.COM | 59

From restaurants and retailers to a state-of-the-art Apple Store, it has a little something for everyone. “I think people really enjoy the fact that we have such unique stores,” says Saddle Creek General Manager Kenneth Taylor. “We are the most affluent suburb of Memphis, and because of that, around 70 percent of the stores you find in Saddle Creek are the only locations in the state. We have the only Vera Bradley in the Memphis metropolitan area and the only American threads and Paper Source in the entire state of Tennessee. Our guests have seen that chic retailers choose Saddle Creek for benchmark locations, and they take advantage of the opportunity to find all of their favorite stores in one great location.” An extensive expansion project that began in mid-2014 will be 100 percent finished by the first quarter of 2017.

Eighteen new tenants have moved into the shopping center, and 12 of those are new to the market. Some of Saddle Creek’s newest tenants include Allen Edmonds, Southern Avenue Company, Sephora and Victoria’s Secret. “Saddle Creek is an extraordinary property, and we’re so pleased to add these three tenants to the growing list of best in class tenants that have chosen Saddle Creek as their primary location in the Memphis metropolitan area,” said Terry Montesi, CEO, Trademark Property Co. “We feel that tenants like Allen Edmonds, Southern Avenue Company, and Victoria’s Secret are really going to further Saddle Creek’s position as the market dominant specialty retail location in the area.” Far from being just a shopping center, Saddle Creek is heavily involved in community and charitable projects. Each year in December, they host a Make-a-Wish “Season of Wishes,” which raises funds for the well-known charity that provides children facing terminal illnesses with a wish of their choosing.

From Farm to Table to Festival Germantown’s Farm Park and Food Festival Drives Interest in Healthy, Sustainable Living Pam Beasley, Director of Parks and Recreation, at the Bobby Lanier Farm Park • Germantown, TN Complete with every vegetable that will grow in the Mid-South, including a variety of fruit trees and berries, chickens, a stable, and a number of other unique spaces, The Farm Park has created a favorite destination and gathering place for the community.

hen you consider all that a city has to offer in amenities, you would typically think of sports fields, park pavilions, picnic areas, tennis courts, swimming pools, and maybe a playground or two, and a community farm probably wouldn’t be on your list, but the city of Germantown has all that and more. The City of Germantown has tapped into the local food movement by developing a working suburban farm that serves as an educational site for sustainable living. Complete with every vegetable that will grow in the Mid-South, including a variety of fruit trees and berries, chickens, a stable, and a number of other unique spaces, The Farm Park has created a favorite destination and gathering place for the community. vendors are “producers only,” meaning they are required to grow or make the goods they sell. This all-local philosophy provides smart choices for the environment and local economy. What may be the most unique feature of the site known as the Bobby Lanier Farm Park is how it was developed. A true grassroots campaign effort saw citizens, stakeholders, city officials, and staff contributing to the creation of the comprehensive master plan. Several improvements have taken place at the Farm Park lately. Recently, Germantown completed construction of a key component of the master plan known as the “Hay Barn Pavilion” with grant assistance from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. Long-term plans include the construction of hoop houses to extend the growing season and expand agricultural opportunities, creation of farm maintenance facilities, and the expansion of farm-based education-
FOOD al opportunities. A fully-equipped outdoor kitchen located in the center of the community garden which will serve a multiuse space for programs, events, and rentals is also in the works. The Farm Park, along with help from community garden members, are preparing to expand the growing plan to include crop production in the several fields. The income generated through the sale of cut flowers and other produce will provide financial support for the operational costs. The community garden continues to be a focal point of the farm site. It is tended by the 65 members of the community garden association who pay a small fee and work a 2-hour weekly shift in exchange for a portion of the harvest. This relationship allows participants to learn various growing techniques while also networking with others who have a passion for the art and science of gardening. No chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers are used. Drip irrigation promotes water conservation and has been a great way for members to learn about alternatives to traditional sprinkler systems. The garden and farm property soil is routinely enhanced through the on-site composting operation. Partnerships have sealed the deal for success at the Farm Park. In 2013, the Germantown Charity Horse Show spent more than $250,000 on renovations to the stable building. The WWW.GERMANTOWNCHAMBER.COM | 69
FOOD Germantown Methodist Hospital sponsors many educational programs and events, while the 2015 Leadership Germantown class produced a successful fundraising event suppporting the renovation of the welcome cottage. Other partnerships continue to be created and include building a goat shed. Universities have provided seasonal interns as a way for them to gain hands on experience in a sustainable agriculture environment. An advocacy non-profit board, the farm park has organized a capital campaign to complete the building renovations and new construction identified in the comprehensive master plan. Their goal is to raise $1,000,000 over the next few years. Lastly, but certainly not least, are the many volunteers who serve as “farm hands” for everything from operating the farmer’s market to maintaining the grounds. The growing desire of individuals and families to have a stronger connection to their food system and the ability to know more about green living has positioned the Farm Park as the place to be for those experiences. Germantown’s newest park amenity has definitely taken root.
GERMANTOWN FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL One of the most unique entertainment events in Germantown is the annual Food Truck Festival. The proceeds from this festival benefit local education projects. Located in the Germantown Performing Arts Center Grove, the festival has been a big hit with adults and kids alike. 70 | GERMANTOWN 2017
FOOD Attendance has fluctuated between 1,500 and 2,500 for each event, which includes 12 to 15 food trucks, 5 to 6 entertainers, and plenty of activities for kids, like facepainting, a bounce house, art projects, and more. Visitors of “The Fund Zone” can also participate in many educational activities which raise money for the Germantown Education Foundation and GPAC Education Fund. The free event was the brainchild of GPAC Executive Director Paul Chandler, who sought a way to experiment with a large, outdoor event in the GPAC Grove with food and live music to gauge the community’s interest in outdoor events. Clearly, the experiment worked, since GPAC is currently in the process of planning a large outdoor venue for the Grove. Chandler’s wife, Jennifer, is a food writer and cookbook author who expanded Paul’s understanding of unique food offerings, which led to the inspiration for a festival involving food trucks. Past food truck offerings include Gus’s Fried Chicken, a sushi truck, Monkey Train Grazing Company and MemPops, while entertainers have included local artists Mason Jar Fireflies and Jason D. Williams. Events have already been planned for June and October of 2017, and according to Chandler, you won’t want to miss them. “If you like to have fun, and you like to eat food, and you like great music, and you like to be outdoors, then this is the festival for you.”

of our partnership – to bring the most innovative cancer care and treatment to our patients, all on their home front. That means ensuring we have multiple locations – throughout the region – that allow patients to receive the care they need, while staying close to home.” A 123,000-square-foot-facility, the new East Campus location provides patients the opportunity for comprehensive treatment and care, all at one location. And while its physical attributes provide a spacious, soothing atmosphere for the almost 35,000 patients seen each year, its most notable feature is that it unites multiple specialties – including the Comprehensive Breast Center, Medical Oncology, Gynecologic Oncology, Radiation WWW.GERMANTOWNCHAMBER.COM | 73

Oncology, Surgical Oncology and Thoracic Surgical Oncology – into a single point of outpatient care. West Cancer Center celebrated the grand opening of this new location in November 2015, with full operations beginning in December of 2015. From Medical and Gynecologic Oncologists to Surgical, Thoracic and Radiation Oncologists, patients at the West Cancer Center benefit from the collective expertise of these multidisciplinary teams – ensuring they receive a uniquely precise treatment plan tailored to their unique diagnosis. This multidisciplinary approach is supported through collaborative forums for treatment planning, including the Multidisciplinary Cancer Conferences and Tumor Boards. These conferences provide an opportunity for physicians across specialties to evaluate individual patient cases to develop a collective recommendation for their treatment. Services and programs at West Cancer Center include: • Blood & Marrow Transplant Program • Clinical Research Program • Margaret West Comprehensive Breast Care Center • Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology • Genetics • Gynecologic Oncology • Head and Neck Oncology • Hematologic Oncology • Medical Oncology • New Therapeutics (Phase I) Program • Nutrition • Pain Management • Palliative Medicine • Psychological Services • Radiation Oncology • Rehabilitation • Surgical Oncology • Thoracic Surgical Oncology • Wings Supportive Care Division

Semmes Murphey • Memphis, TN Photo Courtesy of Semmes Murphey As specialists in the fields of spine and brain neurosurgery, neurology, neck and back pain, concussions and migraines, physical therapy and rehabilitation, interventional pain management, and neuropsychology, the doctors and staff of the Semmes Murphey Clinic have a deep connection to the Memphis area. Dr. Semmes was the first neurosurgeon in the city.
SEMMES MURPHEY
D
rs. Semmes and Murphey founded the Semmes Murphey Clinic to provide much needed medical services and care for patients, to teach residents at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center about neurosurgery, and to excel in new innovations in the field. Today, their doctors still make serving the community, teaching future doctors, innovating, and maintaining a reputation for excellence top priorities. For Semmes Murphey, community outreach and involvement is vital to their existence. Many of their doctors serve at local hospitals, act as professors at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, travel nationally and abroad to give lectures and educate other doctors, write articles and publications, and perform important research so they can innovate in the
field and bring new treatment options to patients. Semmes Murphey truly cares about saving lives, whether they are working with a patient or learning new procedures and performing research for future patient care.
Semmes Murphey has long been an asset to the Germantown community due to their ability to treat such a wide range of issues under one roof. The doctors in their clinic treat neck and back pain, brain tumors, stroke and other endovascular conditions, concussions, migraines, and provide neurological treatment to both children and adults. They also offer physical therapy, interventional pain
management, and neuropsychology services. Many people may not be aware that there is a Semmes Murphey doctor on staff in every hospital in the Memphis area, so their reach is wide. Their doctors and staff at Semmes Murphey also understand the importance of convenience, as they are able to perform tests and procedures in the clinic so patients don’t have to travel to multiple facilities. In the last few years, Semmes Murphey has taken one of the lead roles in developing the Quality Outcomes Database for over 80 neurosurgical sites around North America. Having this data will help ensure that patients are getting the most effective treatments to allow them to return to a normal life. In 2015, Semmes Murphey expanded their Humphreys Boulevard campus to include a new waiting space, registration area, and WWW.GERMANTOWNCHAMBER.COM | 75
BUSINESS exam rooms to serve more patients. In 2016, they added four new doctors to the Semmes Murphey team to expand services to patients, and they are continuing to recruit for 2017 and 2018. Each new doctor brings a unique skill set to Semmes Murphey. Dr. Christopher Nickele’s specialties include open vascular and endovascular surgery as well as spine surgery, tumor surgery, and stroke prevention. Dr. Amber Graham specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation with a focus on neck, shoulder, back, hip, and knee pain, as well as carpal tunnel syndrome and neuropathies. Dr. Michael LaBagnara specializes in general neurosurgery with subspecialties in adult degenerative scoliosis, adolescent scoliosis, spinal stenosis, and other complex back and spine treatments. The doctors and staff at the Semmes Murphey Clinic truly restore lives and help patients return to their normal selves, embodying the message in their tagline, “Get Your Normal Back.”
