Felecia Bella wants to be a happy place for every woman By Tracie Simer

elecia Teddleton is described by her employees as a cyclone for her ability to walk into a room and change everything. On a Tuesday afternoon at her Jackson boutique -- located in the Carriage House Center on Carriage House Drive -- Teddleton walks in smiling, arms full of clothes, and is immediately talking with employees and customers. She shares plans for rearranging, which includes adding a fuschia couch with matching coffee table to the back of the store. “Felecia” means happy and “Bella” means beautiful. The store’s theme, according to Teddleton, is “Make it your happy place.” That’s also her mission with the store. “I want it to be like Disney World when women come in here,” Teddleton said. “If they want to try on everything and buy nothing, that’s OK. Because you never know where they are in life -- if they’re sick or

family issues. You just don’t know. And retail therapy is a big help.” Teddleton grew up in Rutherford, Tennessee, and lived in several places before moving back home with her husband in 2001. She started doing shows, where she would help dress women in fashionable, flattering outfits, then opened her first store in 2004 in downtown Rutherford. Felecia Bella also has a warehouse there, which supplies the merchandise for all three Felecia Bella locations: Jackson, Rutherford and Union City. She opened her Jackson store in 2006. “I feel like I’m here to make a difference,” she said. “My mission and my heart has always been and will always be to help women feel good about themselves. And I’m a big believer in giving back.” Her goal is to eventually have a Felecia Bella line of clothes and accessories.

“It’s my passion, my heart,” she said. “I grew up loving fashion. In this business, there are a lot of stores that pop up every day because they think it’s easy but if it’s not your passion you will never endure it because it is a tough business.” Most of the clothing lines on the racks at Felecia Bella are exclusive to the store -- they cannot be found in other stores in town, Teddleton said. She selects the labels herself and works with designers to choose fabrics and colors. That’s part of what makes Felecia Bella different. The mission and the heartbeat of the store influence the service. “I think it has to be the heart, your gift and your calling,” she said. Felecia Teddleton

We try to make it fun and easy and we want people to have a good time while they’re here. We march to our own drum and don’t care what anybody else is doing.”

Louisiana Fried Chicken meet Southwest-Style Burritos with Father-Son Collaboration by Elizabeth Fletcher

n 1978, Don Agnew saw an opportunity he couldn’t pass. He was carefully watching Popeyes, a fastgrowing fried chicken franchise serving outstanding Cajun-inspired fried chicken, and he had to be a part of its success. He soon purchased the 143rd franchise, moving his family from Missouri to West Tennessee, and quickly opened his first location in Jackson. Agnew’s Popeyes have since grown to four locations around Jackson, part of more than 2,000 franchises scattered across the country. But for the Agnew family, this was different. It was a family affair. At age 19, Andy Agnew, son of Don, was hired for a job he couldn’t have wanted less at the time – General Manager of Popeyes. After a brief run, Andy decided he’d had enough with the food industry and began a career in banking. Ten years later, Don told Andy he was going to retire and sell a portion of the business to the new owner. Andy moved his family

back to Jackson and opted to take over saying, “My dad tried to talk me out of it, saying ‘you don’t want this business.’ But I did want it, I saw this as a family business, and I wanted to keep it that way.” But a family business doesn’t always require family relation. In 2007, Andy opened the Vann Drive Popeyes and a few months later the Moe’s Southwest Grill on the same lot. After struggling to find managers with his vision for quality and customer service, Andy listed a job opening online. He received an application from “a very overqualified lady” who Andy decided not to contact because, well, she was just too good. In comes the cute and quirky, Jane Mariner, whom Andy quickly realized was the natural leader he needed for his businesses. He hired Jane as a supervisor, and under her direction, they went back to business basics. These restaurants quickly became the best of the best under Jane’s motto: “Mediocrity is not our thing. We like to shine; it’s what we do.”

As a credit to Jane’s spunky management skills, all four Jackson Popeyes rank in the 12 percent of sales of more than 2,000 restaurants across the country. Today, you can stop in any of the four Jackson Popeyes and you’ll find everything from award-winning mild and spicy fried chicken or tenders to red beans and rice and other regional favorites. These Cajun specialties will leave your taste buds satisfied and coming back for more. Andy later brought Moe’s Southwest Grill to Jackson, located directly behind the Popeye’s Vann Drive location. Moe’s specializes in a dining experience that utilizes natural ingredients in a casual cool environment. In addition to the addicting fare, the missions of both Popeyes and Moe’s include giving back to the community. Moe’s hosts “spirit nights” regularly where a percent of sales for the night go to a particular group or school like Madison Academic, The Boys and Girls Club, and Southside High School’s ROTC. or those looking for a pumpkin-flavored or holiday-themed brew, the Forked Vine Wine and Spirits in Jackson is the place to look. The store’s latest addition is all about a hot new trend: craft beers. Jackson native Michael Everett attended culinary school in Colorado, where a class in wines and spirits inspired him and his future wife Kim to get into the wine business. They worked in Colorado before an opportunity to buy a store in his hometown arose in 2005. In 2006, the Everetts moved their small store to the Forked Vine’s current location on Old Hickory Boulevard. The store’s large, well-lit space allows for a large selection of wine with Everett’s culinary background providing expertise.

Those growlers can then be filled with beer and enjoyed anytime, Everett said. “It’s just draft beer to go,” he said. “You can take it on a picnic, you can take it to the river, you can just enjoy it on your back porch. It’s basically the ability to enjoy craft beer without investing in a kegerator or going to a bar.” The Forked Vine’s craft beer station was installed in early September.

“We’ve dedicated a whole section of our cooler to craft beers,” Everett said. “As well as the station where we can serve craft beers on tap and in our growlers.”

“We’ve got what’s called the Pegas CrafTap system, which is probably the highest technology out there now,” Everett said. “It completely purges the growler of oxygen so your beer is literally as fresh as it can be because it’s never seen oxygen. It goes straight from keg to the growler so when you open it that’s the first time it starts aging.”

“We try to keep a real dynamic selection so that each time someone comes in there will be at least a couple new beers in here,” Everett said. “It’s a way for people to try new beers. You might run into a problem of ‘I really liked that beer,’ but we’ll bring favorites back into selection.” Everett said he likes to have diverse selection of beers because like wine, everyone has a different taste. The craft beers come from breweries in Memphis, Nashville and others across the country. “We try to have a good selection and hopefully have multiples of what everyone likes, but at the same time keep it interesting for customers every time they stop by,” he said. The Forked Vine customers can sample a beer before buying a whole growler. It also allows craft beer fans a chance to try the latest brews. Everett said his store continues to focus on offering

O n any given day at the Old Country Store in Casey Jones Village, you’re likely to see locals

and travelers alike, including hundreds of hungry people from all over the world. They eat, they shop, they take pictures, they leave happy. And that’s just what owner Clark Shaw and his son Brooks like to see. What makes Old Country Store different from the rest who claim to have the best in Southern cooking is experience, Brooks Shaw said. “Our top five cooks have 100 years combined here, just cooking here,” he said. “Two of them have 66 years combined. So we have cooks who have been raised cooking this food and have been cooking this food for a long time. And we don’t just settle for ‘This is the way we’ve always done it.’ We’re constantly looking for new ways of cooking different items and tweaking recipes.” Clark said the historical setting of the Old Country Store also stands out. “We have thousands of turn of the century Southern country store antiques,” he said. “The quality of our food: we’re choosing the ingredients and the foods we’re preparing. Quality is the number one consideration in

everything we do. I think it shows in the flavor and the taste of the food.” The latest addition to the business is the Dixie Cafe Take Out or Dine In -- formerly known as the “To-Go” section. The name of the new section is based on a historic 1947 sign Clark’s wife Juanita found in a field that used to belong to a restaurant in Selmer. That sign now hangs out front at the Dixie Cafe. “We’ve added 30 more seats including a community table and a small stage,” Clark said. “This place was packed last night with entertainment on the stage. Every seat was filled.” There’s now seating for 60 and it offers the same

food as the larger restaurant -- same food, same kitchen, same cooks, Brooks added. “We pride ourselves on our homemade desserts,” Clark said. “Homemade pies, cakes, tarts.” The Village Baker is a brand-new concept opened within the Old Country Store and is located within the Dixie Cafe. Marlene Neal is the Village Baker, Clark said, and is a master cake baker and decorator. The bakery’s speciality is called “Company’s Comin’ Cakes” -- an eight inch three-layer cake in a number of flavors, including strawberry and German chocolate. Wedding cakes are also available to order. “The holidays are the perfect time to discover The Village Baker and talk to Marlene about what she can do for your holiday parties,” Clark said. “You can also order our fudge: We do trays or boxes of fudge. Our fudge is all homemade here with real cream and real butter.” Brooks said the store’s working on several additions in preparation for celebrating the

Guests are encouraged to visit the Wellwood Country Store, which is attached to the Dixie Cafe, and is the original 1925 store that founder Brooks Shaw worked in as a boy. It’s a tribute to his life and memorial to the inspiration for what the Old Country Store is today, Clark said. The restaurant has done catering for more than 25 years now.
