Eleven years is a long time staying in business! Why has TNT remained one of the top Martial Arts Training Centers in Desoto County? We strive to create a family atmosphere that develops discipline and skill, all while having fun. We are committed to helping every student expand their character, physical fitness levels and, of course, their self-defense skills. And what about your background? I’ve been passionate about martial arts since the age of eight. I worked hard, and I knew from an early age that I wanted to pass my passion on to others. Fortunately I was able to open TNT in July 2004, and I’ve never looked back. What classes are offered at TNT? We have a class designed for three-to-six-yearolds, a class designed for seven-to-12-yearolds, Bully Proof classes and a host of other workshops. For teenagers and adults, we train in Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and speciality classes such as Self-Defense.
Tell me about the Bully Proof Workshop. Our Bully Proof Workshop is so vital at this time of year for children heading back to school. We strive to teach self confidence, discipline, character development and much more in our workshop. We have testimonials from our student’s parents that are so gratifying as an instructor. Our students are learning to stand up for themselves. More importantly, we’re seeing our students develop self-confidence, which is so critical in the pre-teen and teenage years. Homer Skelton Hyundai focuses on treating customers like family. “My philosophy is pretty simple,” says Chris Harville, manager of Homer Skelton Hyundai in Olive Branch. “I treat people the way I want to be treated, and that philosophy filters down through my staff.” Buying a new car can be stressful for most, but Harville’s focus assists in putting customers at ease. His experience has led him to understand what’s daunting about the car buying process, having been in the business for more than 22 years, all of which have been with the Homer Skelton company. In May of 2009, he took over the Hyundai dealership in Olive Branch. “Homer really had to sell me on the idea,” Harville says. “My past experiences with Hyundai vehicles in the 1990’s weren’t very good, but the www.snagmob.com
company has made tremendous improvements over the years, and I’m proud to be associated with the brand and the Homer Skelton name.” Boasting one of America’s best warranties, Hyundai-Kia group topped rival automakers in J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study in 2014 according to autonews.com. Kamillia Sargent, Internet Sales Manager, has been with Homer Skelton Hyundai since 2009. “We treat our customers like family,” Sargent says. “We get to know them on a more personal level. We want to know about their families, their birthdays, what they like to do.” “It’s more than the big things,” she says, “It’s also the little things.” All customers are treated like family. representatives make a point to call customers every few months to check on their experience. “People have told me they were expecting to be pressured and haggle over the price,” Sargent says. “When everything is finished, they say it was the easiest car buying experience they’ve ever had.” Harville believes that good customer service comes from treating his employees well. Most of his employees have been with him since he took over in 2009. In fact, Homer Skelton Hyundai was named one of the Top 50 Places to Work in 2014 by the Commercial Appeal. “Staff turnover is usually pretty high is this business,” Harville says. “We are proud of our product and what we sell, and I work very hard to keep all of my staff members happy. Most of them have been with me for the entire six years I’ve been here.” Part of Harville’s success revolves around the dealership’s involvement in the community. The Homer Skelton Hyundai dealership is a drop-off location for the local Toys for Tots organization every Christmas. They have made donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and have even had an opportunity to visit with some of the children and tour the facility. They also donate to local schools and charities as much as possible. Harville bubbles with pride when talking about the Homer Skelton Hyundai’s Food Drive, in which customers can bring in five canned food items and receive $15 off their oil change. The oil change is good for any make or model vehicle, not just for Hyundai vehicles. “The food drive has been going on since June 2009,” Harville says. “We estimate that since that time we’ve collected over 100,000 cans.” The food is donated to the local Sacred Heart

Southern Missions organization in DeSoto County and then distributed to families in need. The dealership is working on plans to do something additional for Sacred Heart during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday season. “We are planning an event in which we will donate a turkey to Sacred Heart for every car sold,” Sargent says. “It will begin sometime in September or October and run through November.” With so much focus on customer satisfaction and community service, in addition to having a top-rated product for sale, Homer Skelton Hyundai is an easy choice when it comes to car shopping.

I
n early 2012, a group of Greenville, Miss. friends planned a small backyard get-together to which each friend brought hot tamales from different places for a unique sampling of Mississippi’s finest delicacy. At some point during the fun gathering of food, music, and drink, an idea was proposed that would soon turn into one of the most unique festivals in the Mississippi Delta: The Delta Hot Tamale Festival. The first annual Delta Hot Tamale Festival, organized by Betty Lynn Cameron, Valerie Lee, and Anne Martin, kicked off later that year in October with 34 contestants competing for various awards. The amount of success was more than they could have hoped for. “We didn’t know what to expect,” Cameron, who is now serving as the Main Street Greenville Director, says. “We didn’t know if 50 or 500 people would show.” More than 5000 came. The following year in 2013, attendance doubled. It doubled again in 2014, with 20,000 in attendance. Activities included the Miss Hot Tamale www.snagmob.com
contest and the Hot Tamale Eating contest. Contestants are encouraged to incorporate hot tamales in their wardrobe. “It’s not a beauty contest,” Cameron says. “It’s personality, poise, presentation, and a little originality is a nice added element.” “The first winner’s dress was great,” Lee adds. “The entire outfit was made from corn shucks, but the poor girl’s underarms were rubbed raw by the end of the day.” By the time the 2013 festival kicked off, Cameron, Martin and Lee, otherwise known as the “Hot Ta-Mamas,” had teamed up with then Mayor Chuck Jordan to receive approval from the state of Mississippi declaring Greenville the “Hot Tamale Capital of the World.” That same year, the Literary/Culinary Mashup was introduced to the festival by fellow Greenvillian Julia Reed, a successful published author and writer, now with Garden and Gun Magazine. The Literary/Culinary Mashup features two events. On Thursday night, guests have the

opportunity to purchase books and have them signed by the authors in attendance. On Friday morning, guests attend a panel discussion/lunch that offers lively discussions with the authors and chefs, a Delta “shoebox” lunch, a short Delta Tamale film produced by the Southern Foodways Alliance, book sales and signings and more. There are guidelines and rules the hot tamale cooking teams have to follow. Delta Hot Tamales are simmered rather than steamed, and they have to be wrapped in corn husks. There are approximately 100 judges each year from all over the country. After the judging is complete, visitors to the festival have the opportunity to purchase hot tamales from the cooking teams. On average, each team prepares between 300 and 400 dozen to sell. “That first year, Hot Tamale contestants sold out by noon since we didn’t know so many people would attend,” Cameron says. The success of the Hot Tamale Festival has helped in the revitalization of Greenville. A few new businesses have opened in the past four years as a result, which has brought more jobs. “The festival has really given a shot in the arm to downtown Greenville and our community,” Cameron says. “It has even brought attention to one of the Mississippi Delta’s oldest industries, which is hot tamales.” Folks in the Delta have been cooking up hot tamales since before anyone can remember. There are various stories explaining how they reached the area, but once there, they quickly became a popular staple, especially among migrant workers and their families. “Hot tamales were cheap to make and easy to carry,” Lee says. After many years of dealing with a struggling economy, the Hot Tamale Festival has been a

much welcomed event for Greenville. “I have met people who have attended the festival, and they can’t stop talking about how wonderful it is.” Cameron says. “It has been a very positive light for Greenville and is definitely becoming a reunion atmosphere for seeing old friends and meeting new ones.” “Besides, you can’t say hot tamale without smiling,” exclaim the three Hot-Ta-Mamas with a laugh.

No longer confined to just their home living rooms, gamers now have a place in Horn Lake/Southaven area to meet with friends, play video and board games and participate in tournaments. Chip Freeman, owner of Infectious Collectibles and Comics in Horn Lake, wanted to provide a place where children and adults could meet to play games in a safe and wholesome environment. “I wanted to create a safe haven where people could enjoy playing games together,” Freeman says. “We welcome church groups, gamers, sports teams, birthday parties, and everything in between.” Surprisingly, Freeman’s gaming business started with a hat store. Freeman opened Chip’s Hats as a storefront for his former Rent to Own business.

“In the beginning we carried a large selection of sports hats and caps,” Freeman says. “Our inventory quickly began to expand as customers requested other items such as jerseys and memorabilia.” The introduction of memorabilia eventually lead Freeman into offering other types of collectibles such as comics, action figures, and autographed photographs. This paved the way to the opening of Infectious Collectibles and Comics. “We have multiple televisions with Playstation, Xbox and Wii game consoles hooked up,” Freeman says. “We have designated board game areas as well.” Infectious Collectibles and Comics is hosting monthly trivia nights, War Hammer
tournaments every Thursday night and Smash Brothers tournaments every other Saturday. Prizes in the form of store credit are offered to winners. Infectious Collectables and Comics sells card packs such as Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh and is looking forward to hosting Magic tournaments in the future. Infectious Collectibles and Comics is also a great place to see work created by local artists and writers. They feature artists such as Mitch Foust, Jacob Bostain, D. Zachary, John Hall, and Adam Blackwell. Additionally, Mek Corps Comics are available to customers. Freeman is always looking for new and exciting items and games to offer his customers, and he is very up front about where the credit for his success goes. “God has put me in this position, and he gets all of the credit and glory,” Freeman says. “I’m very thankful for the path that he has lead me and my family down.”
