An Accidental Business Fredrick Plummer turned his lunch into a thriving family business. By Sarah Bunce Photos by Bennie Durham

“We started by accident,” chuckled Frederick Plummer, the owner (and namesake) of Mister P’s. “I had a craving for wings while working at Willy’s Commissary, a grocery store I owned in Whitehaven (Tennessee), so I went out and bought a cooker and a ten pound bag of wings.” Plummer never got to taste any of the wings he cooked that day in 1993. As customers came in the store and smelled the wings, they bought them until he sold out. He’s been serving his wings to raving fans ever since. Plummer and his wife Patricia, along with with their children Fred, Jr., Rod, Patrick, April, Erick, and Kendrick, relocated the wing business to Winchester Road in 1995, and from there business kept growing. Now there are six Mister P’s locations in the Mid-South, one of which is 14 SnagMob.com
in Southaven. Locations in Horn Lake and Olive Branch will open in the spring of 2016. “Mister P’s has always been a family business. Our children have taken over for Patricia and I, and eventually their children will take over for them,” Plummer says. “Everything revolves around family, and we want to keep it in the family.” Mister P’s places a great amount of emphasis on quality, service, and providing customers with the best tasting wings, no matter which location they visit. “We use the same family recipes at all of our Mister P’s locations,” Plummer says. “It is important to me that we are serving a delicious product that is consistent at every location.” Mister P’s has won several awards over the years, including “The Best of Desoto County”

getting to where it is today.” In addition to quality service and products, Mister P’s makes every effort to connect with their customers on a personal level. “In this business, you marry your customers. They truly become your family,” Plummer says. “In my opinion, that’s what keeps them coming back.” Hernando residents Rick and Debbie Lehmkuhl frequently visit the neighborhood sports bar and grill on Goodman Road in Southaven. “We’ve been eating at Mister P’s for years,” Rick says. “The service and food are consistently good and affordable.”

Great Steaks In an Unexpected Place The Como Steakhouse experience is worth the drive. Text and Photos by Ashley Gordon
“Como, Mississippi, isn’t the exactly the kind of place where one would expect to find much,” Richard King, co-owner of the Como Steakhouse, says. “It’s one of those hidden jewels that people discover by getting off the beaten path.” Como is located about 25 miles south of DeSoto County off of I-55. With a population just over 1,200, it is a typical southern small town with a handful of businesses and no traffic lights, surrounded by open fields. Como is also the site of two Mississippi Blues Trail markers featuring Fred McDowell and Napolian Strickland. Sitting in the heart of town is the renowned Como Steakhouse, owned by Gary May and Richard King. “The Steakhouse was orginally opened in 1988 by a man named Paul Beavers who, at the time, worked at a very popular steakhouse in Memphis,” 18 SnagMob.com
King says. “The owners of that steakhouse gave him their blessing to open his own restaurant on the condition that it was at least an hour’s drive from any of their restaurants, and that’s when he found Como, Mississippi.” The Steakhouse is housed in a 125+ year old mercantile store and features the original brick walls and metal ceilings. The walls are covered with black and white photos of cattle that were bought and sold in Como as part of the local cattle business. Other photos include historic pictures of the town, blues musicians who have lived in or traveled through Como, and a number of lovely ladies who once called Como home, the most notable being 1920’s and 30’s stage and film star Tallulah Bankhead, who’s mother was from a prominent Como family. The Steakhouse features four large dining rooms that seat hundreds of guests and can

accommodate groups as large as 60 people. Guests can watch as their steaks are cooked to order on one of two open-pit charcoal grills located in two of the dining rooms. “There aren’t too many steakhouses using an open-pit grill,” Kings says. “It really helps give a tremendous amount of flavor to the steaks. The menu offers a variety of mouth-watering steaks such as filet mignon, ribeye, t-bone, porterhouse and sirloin. Other items include grilled chicken, salmon, catfish, rack of lamb and center-cut porkchops. “Our steaks are aged 27 days before we get them, and they are handcut in-house, which is so unusual,” Kings says. “Most steakhouses buy their steaks pre-cut.” Watching the cooks as they poke and flip steaks on the grill is just as impressive as the steaks themselves. “It’s part of the entire dining experience that you get here,” King says. “People wonder how these guys are cooking all those steaks and getting them all right. It really is a show to see.” In addition to the Steakhouse, May and King also operate a smaller restaurant known as The Oyster Bar, which is located upstairs from the Steakhouse. It offers another dining option, serving fresh oysters on the half shell, shrimp, surf and turf, burgers and more. It’s also a great place to grab a drink while waiting for a table downstairs. The Oyster Bar features a full bar with a dining area plus outdoor balcony seating.
For larger parties with 75 guests or more, 211 Main Hall and Gardens is located a few doors down from the Steakhouse. Featuring a full kitchen as well as an open-pit grill, guests can dine on the same mouth-watering steaks served at the Steakhouse. Renters also have the option to bring in an outside catering service. “211 Main has a large, indoor banquet room and an outdoor courtyard that can hold as many as 300 people,” Kings says. “It’s perfect for weddings and receptions, corporate parties and meetings, high school dances, and many other large events.” With so much packed into this small town, Como has become a get-away for those that live in the larger cities further north. “I’m pretty sure more people travel to Como on Friday and Saturday nights than actually live here,” King says.

“There’s a sense of family in every part of Dale’s: from my own family who has been involved with this business with me from the very beginning, to the ‘family’ of employees that have worked here all these years, to the loyal families who dine with us each day, we are truly a family business,” Dale Graham, owner of Dale’s Restaurant says. Dale Graham opened his restaurant 50 years ago under the name Dairy Haven, serving mostly burgers and ice cream. With continuous support from the community, Graham decided to expand and, in 1976, reopened Dairy Haven as Dale’s Restaurant. 22 SnagMob.com
“We became a ‘sit-down’ restaurant, offering a much larger menu selection that has continued to grow for the past 50 years,” Graham says. The menu is packed full of homemade dishes made from original family recipes and using only the best ingredients. Such dishes include fresh vegetable side items, savory chargrilled steaks and burgers, and various southern-style dishes like chicken and dumplings, fried pork chops and meatloaf. “Our food and family atmosphere are what set us apart,” Graham says. “Those are the things that keep our customers coming back.” Dale’s has been serving DeSoto County

They’ve also had the opportunity to serve a few celebrities, such as Elvis Presley, Barbara Bush, Dwight Yoakam, and James Hyter. “I’ve been serving DeSoto County for the last fifty years, and I couldn’t be happier about that,” Graham says. “But I cannot take all of the credit. I could not have done this without the hard work and dedication of my wonderful employees.” Some of Graham’s employees have been with him for over 40 years. Graham credits that to the family-oriented atmosphere of the restaurant. “It has truly been a blessing, and I want to thank everyone who has supported us,” Graham says. “Without that support, we would not still be here. I’m looking forward to serving DeSoto County for many more years to come.”
