T
he city of Olive Branch has a rich and interesting history dating back to the 19th century. Now one of Mississippi’s largest and most vibrant communities, its residents have included Native Americans, early Western settlers and those who made a living with no more than soil and seed, and today, artists, writers, businessmen and others who have contributed to the spirit of community that is so strong in this town that was once only known for its cotton gin and cheese plant. On April 13, 1836, settlers Milton Blocker and Stephen Flinn purchased a parcel of land totaling 1,280 acres from Chickasaw Indian chief Lush-Pun-Tubby for $1,600. Today, The Wessen House, located at the southwest corner of Pigeon Roost and Goodman Roads, marks the site of the original land purchase. The area was known locally as Watson’s Crossroads until 1846, when a new post office was constructed and a new name was proposed. Mrs. Frances Wilson Blocker, wife of settler Milton Blocker, proposed the name Olive Branch, a symbol of the Biblical
story in which Noah is presented an olive branch by a dove in recognition of the receding of the floodwaters. When Olive Branch was incorporated on May 1, 1874, Ben Wesson was elected as the first mayor. At this time, the population is believed to have been 150. The Wessen House, originally owned by Milton Blocker, was sold to Ben

Wesson after Blocker’s death in 1847. During the late 1800s, a railroad connecting Memphis to Birmingham with a depot in Olive Branch was constructed. At the time, the only industry in the area consisted of T.H. Norvell’s cheese factory. It wasn’t until 1888 that the area was officially

At the turn of the century, the Industrial Revolution made its way to Olive Branch, bringing with it a cotton gin in 1910, a public water system in 1922, electricity in 1927, a cheese plant in 1929, and a public sewer system and paved streets in 1940. In 1973, the airport was constructed, and today, it is one of Mississippi’s most active. 1974 saw the construction of U.S. Highway 78, and with it, a boom in industry, jobs, and population. Olive Branch has become one of the
