Denton & Associates is here to help navigate the insurance enrollment process Susan Denton of Denton & Associates shares helpful information about upcoming insurance enrollment and Medicare and prescription coverage. They are a local independent insurance agency located at 168 West University Parkway Ste D. SM: How does Denton & Associates help clients learn more about Medicare and insurance coverage? SD: We can make this easy. For someone wanting individual health insurance, we schedule a time to go through questions that will help with the process. Many people shop online for Marketplace health plans and get overwhelmed. We can guide them through it all and offer plans from several different sources: the Marketplace plan or a religion-based sharing plan. Using either will count as coverage for 2019. We have to pass an ethical certification test before we can offer these plans. We are certified by Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). It is important for people to know that they are working with a trustworthy business. Additionally, we try to offer at least five different companies for supplements that meet Medicare standards. SM: Explain the importance of two approaching dates: October 15th and November 1st. SD: October 15th through Dec. 7th is the enrollment period for Medicare Advantage plans and prescription cards. This is the annual time for our clients to make any changes they need in their Medicare Part D drug card for it to be effective Jan. 1. Clients can choose a Medicare supplement when they turn 65. A second option for seniors is the Advantage Plan. This plan has a copay and a network of doctors. In general, a Medicare supplement has no co-pay and patients can go to any doctor that takes Medicare. Additionally, we try to offer at least five different companies for supplements that meet Medicare standards.

November 1 through December 15th is the annual open enrollment period, for choosing a market place health plan. For those with an insurance plan, changes can be made that will go into effect January 1st. During this time, we check eligibility for a subsidy, which is based on household income, size and limit. If not eligible, we can sell a plan direct, but clients will pay full price. We can help enroll clients in person in our office. Enrollment can be overwhelming. SM: How can Denton & Associates help business owners with insurance? SD: One way we work with employers is to offer insurance to their workers. We can meet face to face with employers, see what the needs are and build a plan. For employers who have a small company with just a few employees, or maybe only want to provide insurance to two managers, for example, we can do that. Employers would be offered quotes, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d present different options and they would select a plan to offer to their employees.

Lower Extremity Chronic Venous Disease 5 Questions for Dr. Ritin Bomb and Varicose Veins As a Board Certified Cardiologist with Apex Cardiology, Dr. Ritin Bomb has more than 20 years identifying and managing treatment plans for Chronic Venous Disease (CVD) and Varicose Veins. We sat down with Dr. Bomb to better understand how to identify and treat CVD. SM: What is Chronic Venous Disease and how common is it? CVD is very prevalent and can be present in up to 50 percent of individuals. CVD is a wide spectrum of venous diseases caused by either structural or functional abnormality of veins of the lower extremity. They can be caused due to venous dilation or venous reflux. SM: What causes CVD? In most cases, it’s inadequate muscle pump function, incompetent venous valves and venous thrombosis or obstruction. The results are vein dilatation, skin changes and ulcers on the skin. SM: What are common symptoms associated with CVD? Pain, heaviness and aching in the legs are the most common symptoms. We also see swelling, dry skin, tightness, skin irritation, muscle cramping and itching. SM: What are the treatment options? We can break up treatment into three different options: One, you have initial conservative treatment and a combination of leg elevation with daily exercise and compression therapy with compression stockings. This helps improve oxygen flow to the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Although compression therapy is an appropriate first-line treatment to manage symptoms associated with CVD, it does not provide a definitive treatment of venous insufficiency.

venous stenosis (angioplasty/stenting) improves venous outflow and reduces symptoms in appropriately selected patients (eg, May-Thurner syndrome). If I am experiencing some of the these symptoms or know someone who is, what should I do? If you are having symptoms such as leg swelling, pain and aching, then you should consider undergoing further evaluation to identify the presence of superficial or deep venous insufficiency. Initial treatment for most patients with chronic venous disease is conservative and includes leg elevation, exercise, and compression therapy. Patients with persistent symptoms after a period of conservative management and documented reflux as a source of their symptoms are candidates for vein ablation therapy. Radiofrequency and laser ablation are the preferred technique and are highly successful in treatment of chronic venous disease.

In Madison County, high rates of childhood asthma and other respiratory illnesses are causing concern among health officials who believe secondhand smoke to be the main culprit. Smoking during pregnancy can lead to many serious complications for both mother and baby. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), women who smoke during pregnancy are more likely than other women to have a miscarriage. The placenta, a babyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main source of food and oxygen during pregnancy, can be affected by smoking. For example, the placenta can separate from the womb too early, causing bleeding, which is dangerous to both mother and baby. Smoking during pregnancy can also cause a baby to be born prematurely or to have low birth weight - making it more likely the baby will be sick and have to stay in the hospital longer. A few babies may even die. Smoking during and after pregnancy is also a risk

factor of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID). Babies born to women who smoke are also more likely to have certain birth defects, like a cleft lip or cleft palate. In order to combat the dangers of smoking and pregnancy, the Jackson Madison County Health Department is taking part in a nationwide program aimed at educating pregnant women of the dangers of smoking. The program, called Baby and Me Tobacco Free, aims to educate pregnant women on the consequences of using tobacco while pregnant and also the danger of smoking in the vicinity of infants and children.
