Memphis Pride All Star Cheer and Dance Long gone are the days of cheerleaders simply standing on the sidelines waving their pom poms and pumping up the crowd while chanting and cheering for their home team. Cheer now has its very own spotlight in the world of sports. Competitive cheer has seen a substantial amount of growth in the last 10 to 15 years. With hundreds of teams across the U.S. competing on a national level, cheerleading has evolved into a competitive sport that requires a great amount of athleticism and discipline. Veteran cheerleader and coach Chris Crabtree, owner of Memphis Pride All Star Cheer and Dance, has seen an increase in the popularity of this sport. “When I took over six years ago, we had about 50 kids,” Crabtree says. “Now Memphis Pride has over 200 team members.” Memphis Pride has nine teams that train for competitions. They work with children as young as four years of age all the way to 18. There are five competitive cheer teams, two rec teams, a senior hip hop team and a youth pom squad. 12 SnagMob.com

Crabtree has spent many years working with cheer and dance students. According to Memphis Pride manager and coach Lisa Pennington, Crabtree has “won about a bazillion national and world championships.” Memphis Pride squads will compete in a total of six national championships by the end of this year. Crabtree also works with local middle and high school squads, including Houston Middle and High School and Arlington Junior Varsity and High School. Memphis Pride hosts summer and threeday skills camps and offers jump, dance and tumbling classes for all skill levels to school squads and cheerleaders seeking individual training. “We love helping everyone, even if they aren’t a member of one of our teams,” Pennington says. All of the Memphis Pride coaches are USASF certified and credentialed and Red Cross CPR certified. They also attend training seminars and classes every year.

Memphis Pride students and coaching staff members spend many hours practicing and preparing for competitions, but also find time to give back. They have adopted

They have also participated in the St. Jude Toys for Tots drive and collected items that were donated to a local women’s shelter. “We’re not only preparing our kids for cheer competitions, we’re also preparing them to compete in life,” Pennington says. “We strive to help them build character on and off the gym floor.”

Starting with just six employees and one truck, Big League oversaw around 50 moves the first year. Now they have 67 employees on staff and operate 19 trucks in two different cities, averaging around 5,000 moves per year. Big League can handle just about any size job, both residential and commercial. They work within a 50 mile radius of Memphis, but will deliver to anywhere in the continental United States. Big League also offers free and on-site estimates, packing and unpacking services and transportation of oversized items. he story of the Forrest Spence Fund began eight years ago on a warm September morning. Brittany and David Spence were headed to the hospital to welcome their first child and, like most new parents, were feeling a mixture of excitement and nervousness. Robert Forrest Spence was born on September 10, 2007, introducing Brittany and David to a new love that only parents can understand. Shortly after his birth, however, Forrest developed complications, and emotions quickly turned. Forrest spent the next 55 days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital fighting valiantly for his life. When the illness finally overtook him, Forrest passed away wrapped in the loving arms of his parents. As Brittany and David were experiencing the indescribable amount of grief that comes from losing a child, they were met with a huge outpouring of love and compassion.

David and Brittany Spence and family They both felt compelled to turn their tragedy into a story representative of the same love and compassion shown to them, creating the Forrest Spence Fund in their son’s memory. “We wanted to ensure that, even though our son’s life was short, it had an impact and would continue to make a difference in the lives of other Mid-South families,” says Brittany Spence, now serving as the Executive Director of the Forrest Spence Fund. The Forrest Spence Fund assists MidSouth families with the non-medical needs of critically or chronically ill children and their families. It provides for individual and family needs. The Fund also helps organizations like area children’s hospitals provide familycentered care. It helps families connect with counselors who can help them through the difficulty of facing critical or chronic illness, especially those that have lost children. The Fund provides need-based financial grants of up to $5,000. Perhaps most importantly, it

provides families with empathy, understanding and hope during a very stressful and difficult time. “We are there for each family in an individual and personal way,” Brittany says. “We meet families where they are and help them navigate the journey of a sick child.” With only one paid, part-time employee, the Forrest Spence Fund is blessed with a very supportive board of directors, committed staff and amazing volunteers who believe in the work of the Fund and the impact it is having on our community.

“We wanted to ensure that, even though our son’s life was short, it had an impact and would continue to make a difference in the lives of other Mid-South families.” – Brittany Spence, Executive Director They rely on volunteer work, fundraising and donations in order to provide the support these families need. “Our events have been a big part of our success, serving to raise funds, increase awareness and get more people involved,” Brittany says. “It can also be attributed to the families we’ve helped sharing their stories and giving back in their own way, whether it’s volunteering their time, money or encouraging others to learn more about us.” Each year, the Fund hosts the Forrest Spence 5K Race, with the most recent race taking place on August 29, 2015, raising over $100,000 and sponsored by Jim Keras Subaru. This past spring, the Fund hosted its first annual Spring Cocktail Party, sponsored by Avery and Meadows Dental Practice and raised over $83,250. They also partner with Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen to host monthly dinners for patients and families at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. This upcoming February, the Fund will

While the Fund has helped so many other families heal, Brittany and David have been able to find peace in the fact that their son’s life has touched so many others. “We are making a difference in the lives of those that are hurting and offering them hope and empathy during a scary time,” Brittany says. “That has been a huge part of my own healing process.”
