DRUG ABUSE

Group 5

PROBLEMS 1. Multiple problems for countries and communities. The medical and psychological effects are very obvious. => Addicts cannot function as normal members of society => neglect or abuse their families, and eventually require expensive treatment or hospitalization. 2. Crime Huge police resources are needed to fight smuggling and dealing. Criminal gangs and mafia underworlds develop with the money from drugs.

SOLUTIONS 1. Education Children need to be told at home and in school about drugs (be aware of the effects) 2. Increase police manpower and powers to stop dealers and to enforce the law. Jobs are needed to give people a role in society.

CAUSES

SOLUTIONS

• Family: o Psychological problems: mental problems can have children feeling deprived and inferior among friends or adopt the mental problems from the family. o Social problems causes stress within teens and stressed teens tend to turn to violence for release. o Moral problems: Children who are shown behaviors that are morally questionable mimic such behavior. o Parenting styles: mistakes in parenting can create disrespectful and violent children.

• Family: o Children should be shown positive views on life and society o Governments should give financial aid to struggling households so improve their conditions. o Positive values and social norms should be presented to motivate the child to behave normally. o A sense of right and wrong and an inclination to follow the law should always be taught to a child.

• Personal reasons: o Social concerns: due to lack of socialization, many misconceptions and biases are formed and will lead to skewed behavior. o Psychological concerns: Mental illness causes teens to commit crimes without realizing their consequences. Statistics show that mental illnesses are one of the biggest cause of juvenile delinquency in developed countries. o Physical concerns: Teens are very self-conscious of their self-images and any deformities might create a complex that leads to a violent resolution.

• Parents can take a firmer role in the development of their children and ensure that they get enough social interactions. • Communication is to be stressed to ascertain and resolve and problems whether psychological or physical.

• Peer group influence: o Abusive behavior: when teens become part of a clique that is abusive, they are desensitized towards abuse and might commit them. o Peer group rejection: due to not getting acceptance into any groups because they do not have a strong personality, teens turn towards crime to mistakenly bolster their image. • Society o Labeling: a first time offender might think himself a criminal due to the tags society put on him and repeat his crimes with less and less guilt.

• Parents should pay close attention to teen’s friends and social circle. • Trust is to be maintained so teen might confide in parents their social experiences.

18

• Educate people on the damage labeling could cause, not only on criminal youths, but in many areas.

SOLUTIONS

PEDOPHILIA

• Brain structure: Poorer scores on memory tests Greater rates of non-right-handedness Greater rates of school grade Lesser physical height Greater probability of having suffered childhood head injuries resulting in unconsciousness Several differences in MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)-detected brain structures

20

• Communication, education, social mobilization on child protection and care are not effective • Busy/ divorced/ social evil parents pay less attention on children -> children drop out of school, earn their living, suffer from violence and pedophilia • Publications, games, information on the Internet, movies that relate to violence and erotic • Gaps in the legal system relating to child protection and the limitation of both capacity, quantity and legal capacity

• Sex drive direction: female hormones, which block the uptake and metabolism of testosterone as well as reducing blood levels of this hormone. • Criminal statutes, publish the names of persons being released from prison after serving time for pedophilia. • Avoiding situations that may promote pedophilic acts: Children should never be allowed to in one-on-one situations with any adult other than their parents or trustworthy family members ( having an observer provides some security for all concerned). • Education: Children avoid situations that make them vulnerable to pedophiles and yell or run if they are faced with an uncomfortable situation. Adults who work with youth

must be taught to avoid situations that may be construed (interpreted, understood) as promoting pedophilia. • Requires periodic background investigations of any adult who works with children • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) aims to reduce attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that may increase the likelihood of sexual offenses against children: Training in self-control, social competence and empathy Use cognitive restructuring to change views on sex with children Prevention: the patient is taught to identify and respond to potentially risky situations based on principles used for treating addictions.

CAUSES  Family: + Lack of parental role models in terms of morality, lifetyles; parents do not care how to teach children to sympathize, love and forgive the others. + Lack of parental care and close relationship with family members.  School: + Focus only on academic knowledge, neglect morality lessons.  Society: + Market-based economy. + The advancements of information technologies:

INDIFFERENCE AMONG VIETNAMESE YOUNG PEOPLE 22

game onlines and social network sites narrow communication in real life. + Globalization: Western cultures encourage Individualism, while Vietnam has followed Collectivist pattern for many generations. + Materialism lifestyle among young generation: material values are more appreciated than spiritual values.  Personal reason: + A lifestyle lacking dynamism, activeness and integration into social life (spend most of the time studying, watching TV, surfing the Internet, etc. rather than social activities.

EFFECTS

SOLUTIONS

Deterioration of social morality + people are emotionless with the pains of their human being partners. + good morality values (love, care, magnanimity, sacrifice, etc.) are replaced by materialism, utilitarianism and individualism. + an increase in juvenile delinquency: being emotionless and senseless acts will lead to crime and painfulness => incapability of controlling self.

• Authorities: legal punishments and fines for emotionless acts. • School: more activities to raise students’ standards of morality. • Family: parental care and teaching children about moral lessons. • Society: publicly criticize indifferent behaviours; publicly praise good moral examples in daily life.
