Hello and welcome to the first edition of Dr. Hauschka Lifestyle magazine, Hauschka | LIFE. We would like to share our unique stories and offer you an insight into the wonderful world of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and Make-up.

Dr. Hauschka is part of the WALA Heilmittel group based near Stuttgart in Germany. We are a truly unique Skin Care brand with 50 years experience as a globally renowned pioneer of 100% certified natural and organic products. We source our ingredients from biodynamic farms as well as our very own biodynamic medicinal plant gardens and various other fair initiatives. These types of farming methods allows us to produce one of kind formulations that offer not only effective results but are also good for the environment.

When the first Dr. Hausckha products appeared on the market in 1967, the concept of a natural cosmetics range that promotes healthy skin, was something entirely new. Our Founders Elisabeth Sigmund and Rudolf Hausckha felt like rebels when they developed the pioneering formulations. Their aim was to make use of the powers of nature for skin care through the application of their knowledge and their own processes.

Launching at a time when beauty regimes and products were likely to be inherited from mothers, Dr. Hausckha offered a fresh perspective on natural ingredients, that with innovation there were products that really delivered.

In celebratory style we hosted our fabulous Karim Sattar, Dr. Hauschka International Make-up Artist and Brand Ambassador, in Sydney early August. Karim has 40 countries to look after and spends much of his time travelling. We were thrilled he was able to come downunder this year in support of our new make-up.

Karim showcased spring summer looks and passed on so many expert tips and tricks for customers and the media. Interviews with Renae from Bondi Beauty which you can find on their YouTube channel. Karim also completed Team training. We congratulate our Account Managers, Melanie, Tania, Nicky and Josie, who are now fully trained Dr. Hauschka Make-up Artists!

During Elisabeth’s youth, it was regarded as uncouth for girls and women from good families to leave the house wearing make-up.

Lipstick could only be worn at private parties or when going to the theatre in an elegant evening gown and were occasionally sold by hairdressers. During her engagement, Elisabeth purchased one lipstick from her hairdresser for research purposes - a bright red colour. This sparked her interest in make-up.

She quickly encouraged the development of a make-up range for Dr. Hauschka Skin Care launching in 1981. Back then, Elisabeth wore red lipstick to express her personality.

Even at the age of 99, Elisabeth was never seen without make-up.

REBELS A UNIQUE WAY OF NURTURING 50 YEARS OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE For many years, Rudolf Hauschka considered launching his own skin care range to complement the medicines range he already established in Germany. However, his ideas only became a reality when he met Elisabeth Sigmund, who ordered medicine preparations from WALA Heilmittel group for her self-developed skin care products.

Elisabeth was a cosmetologist, who was at the time living in Stockholm.

She travelled to WALA and worked with the medicine experts to develop recipes for facial care products. They jointly developed solutions for cream bases without chemical/synthetic

emulsifiers and created fragrance mixes with natural essential oils.

When the first Dr. Hauschka products appeared on the market in 1967, the concept of a natural skin care range that promotes healthy skin was something entirely new.

THE DR. HAUSCHKA MAKE-UP STORY

When our co-founders Rudolf Hauschka and Elisabeth Sigmund first developed the skin care products in the 1960s, both innovators agreed that the same nurturing properties from the skin care should also be introduced into a make-up line in the future.

The addition of make-up products began in 1981, with delicate tints for the eyes and lips. The first lipsticks, eyeshadows and powders were introduced in 1999 and the range has continually grown ever since.

Prep and prime your skin with your tailored Dr. Hauschka face products - for normal skin we recommend cleansing with Cleansing Cream, misting your face with the Facial Toner and moisturising with our Quince Day Cream.

Apply Colour Correcting Powder with a Powder Brush to your entire face to help create an even skin tone.

Use a small amount of Foundation on a Foundation Brush and blend onto the face.

Now cover any imperfections such as redness, pigmentation, dark circles or blemishes with our Concealer to match your skin tone. Use your ring finger to gently pat into your skin.

Add light to the inner corners of the eyes, under your eyes or to make your lips stand out more, or highlight cupid’s bow use Light Reflecting Concealer. Highlights cheekbones too!

I’ve added additional shimmer to the upper cheekbone, the temples and the brow bone by using the lightest colour in the Blush Duo.

Apply the lightest shade of the Eyeshadow Trio 02 jade to the entire eyelid and blend up towards the brows using Blender Brush.

Use the darkest shade of the Eyeshadow Trio Palette to frame the corners of the eyes, adding dimension and depth.

To open the eyes and make them appear more ‘awake’, I applied Eyeshadow Solo 04 verdelite above the iris, Liquid Liner 02 brown to enhance upper lash line and Eye Definer 00 nude to the inner rim.

Apply Volume Mascara 01 black sparingly to bottom lashes and a couple of coats to upper lashes. We emphasis the ups not the downs.

Use your perfect shade(s) from the Eye & Brow Palette to enhance your brows. Finish by setting with the Brow & Lash Gel.

WHAT’S INSIDE YOUR BEAUTY PRODUCTS? Ever wondered what’s inside your skin care or make-up? Some of what we apply on to our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream which means that it’s time to truly think about how your beauty products are being made.

Authentic natural and organic skin care: For Dr. Rudolf Hauschka, co-founder of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care, pure, natural ingredients were his first priority. Even back in the 1960s when the skin care line was developed with esthetician and natural researcher Elisabeth Sigmund, our formulations were based on natural ingredients, free from parabens, silicones and PEGs, as well as synthetic chemical preservatives, colours and fragrances. When Dr. Hauschka Skin Care first came to the market in 1967, certification for natural skin care was non-existent.

However, an independent standard and certification became a necessity to protect both manufacturers of natural skin care and the consumers. This sparked off the creation of NATRUE, which is a non-profit association that provides exactly that accreditation.

NATRUE quality seal and its requirements: Founded in 2007, this international association aims to protect and promote natural cosmetics worldwide. The NATRUE standard assesses products on the basis of their ingredients and manufacturing processes. It also ensures that the products certified have not been tested on animals. Today NATRUE certifies more than 5400 products. Every single one of our over 150 Dr. Hauschka products is certified 100% natural by NATRUE. The fact that our products pass the NATRUE tests can provide our customers with peace of mind and assures us that we have met the highest standards possible for natural skin care products.

Sustainable and socially-responsible ingredients: To obtain ingredients that do not grow in our biodynamic garden or fields, Dr. Hauschka works closely with our subsidiary Naturamus on quality and safety matters. Naturamus is responsible for procuring the raw materials we use in all our products.

It checks whether the desired raw materials such as waxes, vegetable oils, mineral pigments and plants are actually available in organic quality and sufficient quantities. Social criteria also play an important role in the raw material purchases. In some cases this has led us partnering with communities around the world to cultivate organic and fair trade raw materials. For example, in 2004, together with German Argo Action, we initiated a sustainable farming project in Afghanistan, giving more than 700 farmers the opportunity to grow organic rose oil as an alternative to opium.

Not all labels are created equal: As there is currently no legislation for organic and natural skin care this means that anyone can create and claim to produce natural and organic products. Skin wellbeing We all love summer and welcome the brighter, warmer days with open arms. However the change in seasons can also bring changes in our skin condition. As the largest organ of the body, our skin protects us from the outside world and regulates the body’s natural cooling and heating system. To get our skin back into a healthy and balanced state, Dr. Hauschka Expert Tara O’Rourke shares with us her three secrets that contribute to skin health.

THREE STEPS TO ACHIEVE HEALTHY, GLOWING SKIN THIS SUMMMER BY DR. HAUSCHKA UK BASED TRAINER AND ESTHETICIAN, TARA O’ROURKE

1.

A healthy diet for glowing skin

Haven’t we all experienced it before – the shock about the state of our skin after a night out overindulging in alcohol and fast food? Our skin may look sluggish, or even worse we notice blemishes and breakouts. “How we eat is so important for digestion and our overall gut health” says Tara “if this is out of balance and rhythm, it has direct implications for the health of our skin”. After all, our skin is an organ of elimination and will dispose of toxins in our body. To help nourish your skin cells, ensure drinking a lot of water and consuming plant based foods.

Consider what you put on your skin

Our skin absorbs some of the substances we apply, wouldn’t you want to make sure that it’s all natural?! Beautiful, healthy skin is born from the soil, as the quality of the soil determines the quality of the plants grown in it. If the soil is treated with toxins the plants will absorb these and it will eventually end up on your skin. “Chemical products can potentially cause skin irritation, allergies or even premature ageing. This is why it is so important to make sure the ingredients in your products are 100% natural and certified organic, preferably even biodynamic”, explains skin expert Tara. Lemon Balm

LEMONADE On a hot summer’s day there is nothing quite like a refreshing glass of fresh homemade lemonade.

And what’s more, nothing complements the cooling and invigorating taste of lemon more than one of our favourite balancing ingredients, Melissa. Also known as ‘Lemon Balm’, it’s a fast growing herb from the mint family. Try our irresistible, mouth-watering Melissa lemonade, the perfect mid-summer solution to those hot, weary days under the sun.

You will need: Syrup: 1/2 cup of water 1/2 cup of demerara sugar 35ml elderflower cordial or flowers from 6 elderflower bunches Juice from 3 lemons

Start by squeezing and straining lemons.

Reduce heat and let simmer until sugar is completely dissolved.

Lemonade: 3-5 large lemon balm leaves 1-2 ice cubes Top with soda or sparkling water

Combine sugar, water and elderflower in a saucepan and bring to a boil.

Let sugar mixture cool.

Combine slices of lemon, the syrup, lemon balm, and top up with your choice of soda or sparkling water.

Refrigerate until chilled.

Serve over ice and enjoy!
