Letter from the Editor in Chief

Autumn. The sweltering and carefree air of summer fades as we return to our rigid schedules, soon to be reminded of the frigid winds of winter and academic stresses. Though the temperature cools, our hearts are enkindled more than ever by the warmth of others and festivities.

The season of the distinctive aroma of pumpkin spice, the ghostly thrills of Halloween, and the flowing of leaves through the brisk air, all conclude with a celebration of the bonds we are endowed.As we progress through this season of flannel, fright, and feast, take a minute to enjoy these articles and art pieces that encapsulate the passions we experience during this bountiful period of our lives.

Aroundthetimeofthewinterholidays,manydifferentemotionsare intheair.Itcanrangeanywherefromexcitementtosadness.Writea shortstoryorpoemdescribinganemotionaltimethatyouexperiencearoundthewinterholidays.

Withthefirstdanceoftheseasonbehindus,Ihaveconcludedthat weasastudentbodydon’ttrulycareabouttheschooldancesorany danceforthatmatter.

ForaslongasIcanremember,whenthenextsocialeventisa danceofsomekind,peoplearoundmehavealwaysmentionedhow theyplantostayatthedanceforonlyanhouroracoupleofminutes. Noonehaseverbeentrulyinterestedinbeingatthedanceitself.

Iadmiretheschool'scommitmentintryingtomakethedances seemlikeabiggerdealthantheyactuallyare,butdanceorganizers havetorealizethatthesedaysnoonegoestodancestohavefun;studentsonlygotosaytheywent.Countless

peopleconveyedthattheyplannedtoattendtheHomecoming dancebecauseitistheir“senioryear.”Sincewhendidtheactofattendingadancebecomemoreimportantthantheexperienceitself?

…beinginvitedtooneofthese dancesseemedsoflatteringand exciting…”

Peoplearesodisinterestedintheactualdancethatmostpeople whoplantoattendadancefeeltheneedtopartakein“outsideactivities”beforetheyarriveinorderto“livenup”theirexperience.Asa matteroffact,someskipthedancealtogetherandgostraighttothe after partiesinstead.Ofcourse,thedifferencebetweentheseafter partiesandregularpartiesisthateveryoneisdressedinsemi-formal attire.

Theschooldancesarenottheonlysocialeventsaffectedbythis mentality.Attendanceofthewinterdancesoutsideoftheschooldistrictsufferfromthiswayofthinkingaswell.Whenwewereyoung, theideaofbeinginvitedtooneofthesedancesseemedsoflattering andexcitingastheessenceoftheinnocenceofouryouth,butasthe yearshavegoneby,ourmentalitieshavechangedmakingthesedancesseemabitoverhyped.

Nottobashanyoneinvolved,butfortheamountofpeoplewho talkabout dances,itisexpectedthatthedancesthemselvesactually beworthwhiletoattend.Imean,evensomeofthepeoplewhohost thedanceshavequestionedtheenjoymentandworthbehindthem.

Intheend,pastexperiencesandtheattitudetowardstherecent Homecomingdanceshowsthatmostofthestudentbodyonlyattend dancestosaythattheywentortosaythattheygotinvitedIt'snot likeanyonereallycares.

Willthenextdancesplayoutthesameway?Whatcanwedoto makesurestudentsgotodancesandgetthefullexperienceand… well…dance?

Itissafetosaythatour2022 2023schoolyearhasnotbeen likeanywehaveeverhadbefore.Atthebeginningofthe year,wehadmanydifferent changescomeabout.Someof thosechangeswereintheform ofbudgetcutsandnewschool protocolsforsafety,butamong theselatestchanges,thereis onethathasfacedmuchspeculationandscrutiny.Ofcourse,I meanthenewscoreboardon thefootballfield. Ourfancy,state of the art scoreboardisoneofthemost recentmodificationsmadeto ourfootballfield.Withreplay optionsandloudspeakers,itis definitelyafeaturethatwill makeDelRioHighSchoolstand

out.Nowwhyisitfacingso muchscrutiny?

Arecentsurveyconducted bytheWrittenArtteamimposedthefollowingquestion: Do you believe that the new scoreboard was a worthwhile purchase?

Afterreceivingtheresultsof thesurvey,wefoundthat82% ofthosewhovotedanswered NO,while18%answeredYES. Whymighttheresultsbeso drasticallydifferent?

Severalinteractionswiththe studentbodyhavedrawnup theconclusionthatmanypeoplebelievethenewscoreboard wasthecauseofthebudget cutsinmostoftheprograms.

Notonlythis,butthestudents seemadamantthatthefundingthatwentintothisnew featurecouldhavebeenused forsomethingmorebeneficial. Maybeitisbestthatthedistrictadministrationsetthe recordstraight.

Althoughtheirconclusions aboutthescoreboardhave beenmadewhetheritiswith considerationofallavailable informationornot,thestudentsatDelRioHighSchool mightbemissingthebenefits thisnewadditionhasonour

community.Asseenatourrecenthomefootballgames,the newscoreboardhasofferedthe abilityformorecrowdinteraction.Notonlythis,butpeople cannowhaveabetterviewof whatishappeningonthefield.It hasprovidedanoutletforbeneficialadvertisementfromcommunitybusinessesandlocalprograms.Asasymbolofourgrowingcity,thenewscoreboardis somethingDelRiohasnever seenorhadbefore.Itshowsthat weareheadingintoamoreadvancedsociety.

Ghostsarethesoulofwhoweare.Theyareashadowofwhoweonce were - a glimpse of life’s challenges and enjoyments. Every scar, tattoo,andbeautymarkshowonwhatusedtobeus.Inawayit'sbeautiful. Throughout life we go through many challenges. Some can be worsethanothers,butstilltheycanbeatraumaticpartofourlives.

Becomingaghostreleasesourworriesandmakesusinvisibletolifeinvisible to everythinggoing on, to problems, and most emotional of alltopeoplewhoweholdclosetous.

Ghostsarethememory of who weusedto be. Every time our legacy andmemoryisremembered,oursoulsshineabitbrighter.EveryDia DeLosMuertoskeepsoursoulsaliveintheirhearts.Ourbeingnever forgottennorshattered.

Ghosts are respected. They lived their life in a way that people will neverforget.Theymadeanimpactinotherslives.

Ghoststhemselvesarethehistorythatwehaveallbeentaughtabout since day one. They are the words spoken that are never forgotten. GhostsarerememberedeveryOctoberandNovember.

Ihopemysoulandmyghostwillneverbeforgotteninothers‘hearts, forIknow,ghostsarerememberedinmine.
