Construction of a gas transport line for gas storage site Bergermeer Period

Near the Dutch city of Alkmaar, Taqa Onshore B.V. is con structing an underground gas storage site named ‘Gas opslag Bergermeer’. This storage site has the purpose of supplying extra gas in a timely fashion at times of high demand. The site ensures certainty of supply for the Netherlands. The completion of this project is just another example of a challenging project that was successfully executed by A.Hak Leiding bouw and A.Hak Drillcon. A.Hak Leidingbouw was re sponsible for 8 new transport lines for the gas storage site at Bergermeer adding up to a total length of 37,5 kilometers of pipeline. As a specialist in trenchless techniques A.Hak Drillcon executed 9 horizontal directional drillings and 8 microtunnelings.

For the construction of the gas transport lines A.Hak Drillcon executed 9 horizontal directional drillings and 8 microtunnelings. For the construction an exceptionally strong and durable steel was used named ‘Super Duplex Steel’. Two 30" steel pipes, with a wall thickness of 26,5 mm coating and insulation, were used which ensure that an empty gas field can be filled quickly. During this project two drilling techniques were used. For the HDD’s the 45, 100 and 330 tonnes drilling rigs were used. For the MT the AVN500, AVN600 and AVN800 were used.

During the project high environmental and safety demands were made by the client. In preparation for the project several studies and investigations were made to determine the current habitats and areas of the local flora and fauna. Close to three quarters of the project runs through nature reserves that include breeding grounds for many species of birds. In order to prevent any disturbances during the breeding season it was stated that the nearest activities had to be completed by March. Additionally, the ground water had high volumes of sulphur dioxide and chlorine. To prevent the odors of these contaminants, special considerations were made to reinsert the used water into the ground by means of a return system. The project had to be executed after a wet summer, which made it even more challenging. In December 2012 sister companies A.Hak Leidingbouw and A.Hak Drillcon delivered this project successfully.
