Lighting Upgrades

LED LIGHTS

Ok so today, let’s try and simplify some of the lighting questions we have received the last couple of months, and explain some of the different categories. First off the number one question I get from NON Jeep owners is, “Why does every Jeep I see have so many lights on it?” The answer is easy, Jeep has for the most part designed an incredible capable off road vehicle... As long as you are wheeling during daylight hours! Simply, the head lights on a Jeep SUCK! Even on well lit city roads, it’s hard to see at night. Much less if you are off road with zero lights around. This being the case we are forced to dress up our rigs with additional external lights. Basically there are three main types of lights available, Halogen, HID, and the newer LED. Halogen Lights Most aftermarket lights are Halogen lights. This is an older technology, that is cheaper to produce and provide about the same level of lights as a factory headlights. So people used to stack 5 or 6 across a light bar to help provide more light while running trails.

HID lights These type lights were next to hit the market. They produced three times as much light as a similar style Halogen light but were a LOT more expensive due largely to the big internal burners that were necessary to produce all this extra light. Also HIDs required some extra wiring and were quite a bit bulkier. LED Lights Lastly onto the scene were Led cube lights and came out at first in these small little black boxes and got dubbed the nickname cube lights. And when we all saw them for the first time we laughed at how “cute” they were. Then the turned them on... and well, we all got out our wallets and couldn’t buy them fast enough! These things were incredible! They produced a brighter more intense light than anything previous to them! And they are incredibly easy to install. Now they are available in all different kind of bars and patterns. Yes, at first they were a little bit more than the trusty halogens, but the light output was worth the extra money. Recently however, you have seen the price come down considerably due to the large number of companies creating these lights. LEDs are by far the best way to go when selecting additional lighting for your Jeep.
