Off-Roading Etiquette Part 2

Previously, we went over some of the basic off-roading terms and trail etiquette. Today after reflecting on our club trail ride we went on this past weekend, it occurred to me, there are a few other things we should discuss. Trail Pace- When out on the trail, the natural response is when following others down a long winding trail is to keep up with the Jeep in front of you. THIS IS WRONG! The proper thing to do is keep the Jeep behind you in your sight. This is done so that if by chance the Jeep behind you has a problem and falls behind, either hung up on an obstacle or over heats, the group doesn’t run off and leave them. If everyone in the group does this, you will all stay together and not loose anybody. Obstacle Approach- Another thing to keep in mind while in especially a larger group. Not everyone can conquer every obstacle! So watch the Jeep in front of you, pay attention to how they line up at the obstacle, and try and follow the same line. Along with that, most trails have harder spots in them and most of us like to push our Jeeps to their limits. That’s GREAT, that’s what they are designed to do. BUT… if you have a new Jeeper behind you, or one that isn’t equipped to tackle this next daring adventure, you should stop, talk to them and let them know what you are about to do, and either spot for them if they would like to attempt it, or show them the safer way around. Spotters- If you come to a section on a trail that is a little bit hairy and gave you some trouble, move your rig out of the way, and jump out and help guide the next person through. All of us like to think we can get through every trail without any help, but from inside your Jeep, you cant see everything like a spotter can, so pay attention to them. And, if you get to a spot you don’t feel comfortable advancing, lay on the horn, everyone will stop and somebody will come back and help guide you through the obstacle. Throttle control- Ok this is an important issue! Most of us grew up riding in mud, and the rule in mud is, if you start to spin your tires, press the gas harder!! Well on the trails and rocks, that is not always the case! In fact unless you are a big Rock Bouncer, its NEVER the case! 99% of the time if you are having problems clearing an obstacle, it has more to do with the line you are trying to take, rather than your speed. Slamming the gas to the floor, will usually just result in more damage. So, take it slow, if you get stuck or hung up, honk get someone to come spot for you and let them guide you through it. We all love to wheel our Jeeps, it’s a Passion, Obsession, and a Way of life for most of us. Our sport is also growing, DAILY. So it is important to pass these rules along and help each other along the way. This keeps everybody safe, and from breaking stuff!
