The iCar? A collective groan was heard emanating from Detroit to Tokyo to Frankfurt over the last few days as the Wall Street Journal published an article on Apple's foray into the automobile sector. Named 'Project Titan', Apple is rumoured to be all set on releasing an electric car into the market by 2020. That's a short five years from now as opposed to the usual 7 years it takes to release a vehicle by the larger car companies. Apple is reported to have a 1,000 strong team working on the project headed by Sir Jony Ive, Apple's Chief Designer whose personal car collection is said to consist of, the Fiat 500, an Austin Healey Sprite, an Aston Martin DB9, an Aston Martin Vanquish, a Bentley Mulsanne and a Land Rover LR3. With a cash hoard of $178 Billion (Kshs 16 Trillion), the giant from Cupertino, USA can afford to splurge on developing an electric car from scratch. Engineers joining Apple's 'Project Titan' are reported to have been offered a $250,000 signing bonus and a 60pc raise in salary.
? What direction the iCar will take is full of innuendo and speculation at present, will it be a driverless car, or will it be in the mould of the Tesla S, but given Apple's track record of great design, simplicity and beauty we can expect something that will redefine the sector and that designers at every car manufacturer will be watching on with a hawk eye through sleepless nights. Already Carl Icahn, the billionaire activist investor, has said that Apple's market cap should be heading north of $1.2 Trillion (108 Trillion Kshs) from $700 Billion today.

Technical Corner Turbocharger vs. Supercharger The way in which we need food and water, engines need fuel and air. And to go faster, engines need a lot more (compressed) air. That's where forced induction comes in, it's one of the fastest ways to add power to an engine by forcibly pulling in more air by delivering compressed air to the intake of the engine. There are two ways this is done: turbocharging and supercharging. Let's delve into the details a little shall we; A Turbocharger is powered by a turbine driven by the engine's waste exhaust gas, the point of a turbocharger is to improve an engine's volumetric efficiency by increasing the density of the air before it enters the intake manifold. The amount of power available in the gas is proportional to the difference between the exhaust pressure and air pressure. A turbocharger is more efficient than a supercharger, as a supercharger is mechanically driven from the engine connected by a belt to the crankshaft. This process takes some power away from the engine by placing an extra mechanical load on it. A turbocharger allows for a sizeable increase in horsepower without increasing the size of the engine. This allows for better fuel economy and overall efficiency. In Europe some 63pc of cars sold are now turbocharged. The downside of turbochargers is that they have turbo lag, turbochargers are designed to operate in a certain RPM range where the exhaust gas flow is sufficient to 7
DRIVEKENYA.CO.KE | MARCH 2015
provide a boost to the engine, thus they take time to spool up (spin the turbine wheel). Another downside is that turbochargers get very hot, this adds more strain on the engine and the cooling system, requiring more engine oil use. In the case of larger turbos, the instantaneous surge in power has led to cases of vehicle instability and loss of traction. The three main turbo configurations in use today are the twin turbos, variable geometry turbos and twin-scroll turbochargers. The supercharger also increases horsepower and it does so without any lag as at each intake cycle of the engine more oxygen is let in, burning more fuel and doing more work, this leads to increases in the overall power. The effect is immediate as the supercharger is driven by the engine's crankshaft and is thus far more effective at low RPM's compared to the turbocharger. It's also cheaper to supercharge a car. The downside is that they are far less efficient overall, you're essentially drawing power from the engine to provide power to the engine! Again with turbochargers, the supercharger also adds more strain to the engine - higher temperatures and more pressure, this has the effect of reducing the longevity of the engine. There are two types of superchargers known as positive displacement pumps and dynamic compressors. On the whole turbos make more sense efficiency wise and that is why they are the most popular option.

The Jaguar E Type Classic “The most beautiful car ever made” Designed by Malcolm Sayer, an aeronautical engineer by training, this perfectly proportioned vehicle was described by Enzo Ferrari as "the most beautiful car ever made" upon its release, and it isn't hard to see why. The sleek lines on the initial 2-door coupe with its elongated shape and high performance made it an icon of the 60's, so much so that till today it is a permanent exhibit at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Manufactured by Jaguar between 1961-75, the series 1 E-Type initially featured a 3.8-Litre Inline 6, which had previously powered Jaguar to 5 Le Mans victories in the 1950's, this was then increased from 1964 to a 4.2-Litre Inline 6. Eventually culminating in a 5.3-Litre twelve-cylinder V12 engine with the series 3 produced from 1971-75.
10
DRIVEKENYA.CO.KE | MARCH 2015
Remaining in production for 14 years the E-Type sold more than 70,000 units, making it the first mass produced sports car in Europe as it was reasonably priced at £2256, the equivalent of £38,000 today (Kshs 5.32 Million)
ZZZ ȵLFNU FRP GDYHVHYHQ
The Series 1 E-Type produced 198kW of power, a top speed of 241km/h, torque of 384Nm and it reached from 0-60mph in 7.0s. At the time this 4-speed manual was one of the fastest cars in the world. A 3-speed automatic followed in 1966 with the introduction of the 2+2 coupé model.
E-Type owners included the likes of football legend George Best, actress Brigitte Bardot, actors Tony Curtis and Steve McQueen amongst others.

The Camaro ZL1 The 5th generation Camaro ZL1 can trace its lineage back to 1969. This is a track designed and focused car, with magnetic ride suspension, it's clocked in a lap time of 7:41.27 at the world renowned NĂźrburgring. Weighing in at 1,837kg, there are 5 performance settings to choose from in the ZL1 for maximum performance. The ZL1 also includes a 1.9-liter supercharger that gives this car that additional oomph of thrust and thus exhilaration. Reviewers have described the ZL1 as a gentleman's super car given its comfort level while driving. "The objective of the ZL1-specific exterior aesthetic elements remains the same as before: maximize cooling and minimize lift. A unique fascia and hood are designed to increase engine and brake cooling and to help create downforce. The rear spoiler adds roughly 150 pounds of downforce to the package. The rockers are also shaped for optimal airflow and downforce. Hidden from view are the two turbulence-quelling panels attached underneath the car." - Car and Driver

707-horsepower. The most powerful American muscle car ever made. I mean we could just stop right there? This car would mess with anyone's head, it's a sinister looking car weighing in at 2,070kg, reviewers say its great on the inside, it has a real suspension with brembo brakes and it has 707-horsepower, oh wait, we already mentioned that, but it's worth repeating! The Hellcat is on top of the power pyramid, a paradigm shifter in the muscle car segment. "The Hellcat name is appropriate because flooring the gas pedal it is like opening the floodgates of Hell and channeling some unholy force into your smoking, screaming rear tires. It actually feels unnatural. It is a hulking beast, but in a straight line it seems as light as a tiny roadster because there's just so much bottomless, furious power and torque. Truly, this engine is a masterpiece of internal combustion." -Jalopnik 13

Q&A
DriveKenya sits down with the Zapp Family to talk about their incredible journey
Herman and Candelaria Zapp have spent the last 15 years living their dream, they've travelled across 5 continents and 55 countries with their 4 children, Pampa, Tehue, Paloma and Wallaby aged 12, 9, 7 & 5 respectively, who've been named after the countries they were born in. What's even more incredible is that they've done this in a 1928 vintage Graham Paige 610 with the original 6 cylinder 3-liter inline engine. The 610 is one of the first cars with hydraulic brakes as well, which were introduced in 1928. And to top it off the Graham Paige comes with wooden spoke rims, which they maintain with the application of linseed oil. Drive Kenya sat down with this lovely Argentinean family to discuss their over 250,000km of globe trotting in a vintage car! DK) Tell us about yourselves? Herman) We met in childhood, became close in our teenage years and eventually married each other. We would always read about traveling and journeys and had decided that no more than 2 years after getting married we would go for a grand journey. But life took a sidetrack and six years after we got married we were busy working, building a house, got stuck in a routine and we just never got round to traveling. I am an electrician by profession and Candy was was an assistant. DK) Why did you choose the Graham Paige & how did you get going on your adventure? Herman) The idea was to backpack to Alaska for 6 months. We would drive all the way there, come back and start a family. Instead it turned out to be a 4 year journey across the Americas and we conceived our son on the way. I liked vintage cars but I had never owned one, and somebody offered me one, so I went to see it and I found it to be beautiful so I paid $4,000 for it. And I had $4,000 remaining for the journey towards Alaska! Candelaria) When you go into the unknown you discover yourself. We didn't have satellite phones, GPS, computers. The fears were huge, people were asking us what happens if the car breaks down, if we get sick on the way, and what if people con us etc. We just had an e-mail address we had registered a week before leaving in terms of hi-tech. Herman) It's such a beautiful world, it's all arranged, just have faith, looking back you feel it was all arranged by some higher power. On our first trip we put the car on a raft and set sail on the Amazon river from Ecuador to Manaus, over 8000km. Along the way we met Aboriginal peoples who had never even seen a car! And then we went zig zag across the continent living with more than 400 families in their homes.
DK) Have you ever had a bad experience in a country? Herman) Always people tell us that people are bad but our experience has been the opposite. We've met wonderful people whether it's police, at customs, at the border, families. After you've seen 1000 mountains, another mountain is just a mountain but people keep the journey interesting. Candelaria) In the Amazon we lost a rudder on the raft sailing down the river. We had to ask aboriginal people to help us, people who'd never even seen a car! They made a rudder carved from a log for us. Geographical challenges are the toughest. In Zimbabwe we were stuck in mud for an entire night and the people from the nearby village helped pull us out of the mud with Oxen all the way to the road. DK) How long do you plan to stay in Kenya? Candelaria) For a few months, travel to the Rift Valley, Mombasa, we've been invited to an island as well. DK) How do you meet so many generous people?
DK) What keeps you going?
Herman) Mostly spontaneously! People see our car, our family and they become intrigued with our story. We've met some wonderful people on our journey.
Herman) People. Everyone has a different story - a love story, what they went through, a war story. McDonalds, KFC is everywhere and they are the same but the cultures, the people are what's special. Also the beautiful feeling of 100pc freedom, the freedom of travel! We can do anything we want, that's why we don't have a sponsor to commit ourselves too, that would tie us down.
Candelaria) Mostly spontaneously on the street! It's good to not have the money, so by necessity we must contact people, we must go out, go to festivals, we must sell our book. We don't have any sponsorships, or inherited wealth. People have opened their hearts to us, we live with real people in their homes and get to experience the local culture. I learnt how to do water colour paintings to sell, Herman learnt to frame the paintings and then we learnt to write, our book Spark Your Dream was written over an 8 month period. DK) You've taken this car to some amazing places, could you please share a few experiences? Herman) We've taken this car over sand dunes in Namibia, we were taught how to drive there by a friend we were staying with and it was quite a fun experience going over wave after wave of dunes. We've driven right across the Serengeti as well, from south to north, we were there all alone in the wilderness. We've also driven this car all the way from Tibet to a base camp in the Himalayas through the snow!
DK) How do your kids feel about traveling, are they enjoying it? How do you educate them? Herman) For now yes, but maybe they will change their minds later when they become teenagers. Candelaria) I do the schooling everyday. Educating them is the toughest challenge, if it weren't for the school the journey would be 100pc. This year is going to be a challenge, we are going to have all four in schooling, last year I had three. We co-ordinate with the education ministry in Argentina to teach them, we have long distance courses. I use a lot of the journey to teach them. DK) Have you given yourselves a deadline to finish traveling? Candelaria) If we see somebody is not happy, then that is our deadline. Herman) After Europe maybe, so atleast two more years. But I've been saying that for the last 6 years! People always ask me when I will come back to the real world? If someone is working for 20 years people never ask him when are you going to stop working, but if you are having fun people ask you when are you going to stop having fun! It feels like I've been traveling for only one year as opposed to fifteen, time doesn't exist, it's been so much fun. DK) Where were you before coming to Africa? Herman) We travelled for 5 months through India. Northern India, Goa, Mumbai, Varanasi, Udaipur, Jaipur, so many places! Some of the names I have to check on the map. It would take more than two years to see India, a history of thousands of years, my country only has a history of 200 years.
DK) Where are you planning to go next? Candelaria) To Ethiopia most likely. DK) If you had one more lifetime would you do it again? Candelaria) If I knew I was going to have four kids on the journey and would run out of money for sure I would've stayed at home! It can be scary thinking about it but yes I would do it again because it is so interesting. Herman) You came with nothing, you will leave with nothing, all that will make you rich in life is experience and going for your dream with the person you love and a beautiful family. What more can you want? DK) How can people read and find out more about your global adventure? Candelaria) They can see our website at www.sparkyourdream.net and read our book Spark Your Dream. DK) Thank you for taking the time to meet us. What an amazing journey. Herman & Candelaria) Thank You! Sweden WRC Results Sebastian Ogier claimed his second rally win out of two races this season at the recent Rally Sweden, held on the 12-15th of February. Heading into the final stage of 15.87km, less than five seconds had separated the Volkswagens of Mikkelsen and Ogier and the Hyundai of Belgian Thierry Neuville in this thrilling race held in the snowy forests of central Sweden. Mikkelsen was in the lead until he drifted wide at a left handler costing him a dear 40s thus denying him his first WRC rally win and handing a surprise win to Ogier. “We were flat-out all the time. Even with opening the road, we won 85 percent of the rally. It’s an amazing victory. I’m so happy, so proud.” Said Sebastien Ogier at the final stop control. Ogier now heads the WRC drivers' standing with 53 points, with Mikkelsen and Neuville both on 30 points.
