Winning At Poker The Texture of the Game

A

mong the many definitions of “texture,” my preference is: Texture is “an essential or characteristic quality or essence” of something. (Ref. Wikipedia) That’s how we use the term in the game of poker. Sometimes, we talk about the “texture of the table,” referring to the nature of the game as being played at that particular table. The texture depends on the traits of the players at the table: What kind of players are they and how does this manifest itself as the hands are played out? Among the most significant traits, some poker players are tight, playing only strong starting hands, and folding if the flop doesn’t improve their hand. On the opposite extreme, some are very loose, staying to see the flop almost every hand dealt to them. (Those are our PokerPiby George “The geons; they are bound to be losers.) Engineer” Epstein Players may be aggressive (even “maniacs”), often betting and raising. Or they may be just the opposite: passive players who rarely raise, just calling along – or folding. There are other types such as calling-stations and deceptive players; but those above are the ones that best define the texture of your table. Observing the game as it is played out, hand after hand, you can determine the overwhelming mode of play – its texture. At a tight table, it’s hard to win any money as so few stay to see the flop. The casino rake and Bad-Beat-Jackpot drop will “eat you up.” Most truly skilled players prefer a loose-passive table. It’s much easier to win in such a game, without risking too many chips before the flop if the table is aggressive. One or two aggressive players is all it takes to change the texture from loose-passive to aggressive. When that happens, you have two options: Play very tight, entering hands only with very strong holecards; or, better yet, change tables. . .

George Epstein is a retired aerospace engineer. Upon retiring he idecided to apply his engineering and mathematical skills to poker. VEGAS ANYWHERE

McCarran Airport Launches Traveler Walking Program

T

he Clark County Department of Aviation enlisted the expertise of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) for the launch of its new FLY FIT walking program at McCarran International Airport. FLY FIT is the first airport fitness program created in partnership with the ACSM and was designed in response to “Step It Up!,” the Surgeon General’s call to action to make walking a national priority. “I am so pleased that we were able to partner with the American College of Sports Medicine in order to create this fun and easy way to improve the health and wellness of those traveling through McCarran,” said Clark County Director of Aviation Rosemary A. Vassiliadis. "Everyone deserves to have a safe place to walk or wheelchair roll. But in too many of our communities, that is not the reality," said Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, the 19th U.S. Surgeon General. "We know that an active lifestyle is critical to achieving good overall health. And walking is a simple, effective and affordable way to build physical activity into our lives." Additionally, McCarran’s FLY FIT program falls in line with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recently introduced Airport Walking Guide that was developed as part of its Walk to Fly project to encourage airport travelers (through point of decision signage) to make active choices.

McCarran introduces Las Vegas-themed music and live shows When it comes to the music at McCarran International Airport, it’s now all Vegas, all the time. The Clark County Department of Aviation recently launched a program that gives travelers an audible reminder of their Las Vegas experience. Thanks to new music programming branded “Voices of Vegas” featuring a custom playlist broadcast over the public address system, those at the airport and the McCarran Rent-A-Car Center now hear hits by music stars with Las Vegas ties, such as the Rat Pack, The Killers and Celine Dion. “We often say that our airport provides visitors with their first and last look at Las Vegas, and this music programming improves upon that idea by making McCarran a more immersive Vegas experience,” said Director of Aviation Rosemary Vassiliadis. “What better way to begin or end a trip than by hearing the musicians and songs that are widely associated with our community?” To showcase Vegas’ iconic and emerging artists, McCarran partnered with PlayNetwork, the leading provider of music and branded entertainment media, to curate and enhance the experience of millions of travelers. The initial playlist features nearly 250 shuffled tracks, including Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas” and Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon.” Elton John, Jennifer Lopez and Boyz II Men, among others.
