Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Driven Magazine. Driven was conceived to be a communication that offers insight and interest to all of our customers; and not necessarily just around the glamorous world of cars. Therefore, following the enormous success of our first edition in July, we have taken this opportunity to expand the contents of our second offering; and its something that we are extremely excited about. This time round we have decided to not only bring you all of the latest news from Vindis Group around our products, services and brands but we have also branched out to offer a little more variety. We have included a review of the Cambridge Chop House, part of the Cambscuisine Group, and one of my own personal favourite restaurants; we are publishing an interview with Jonnie Peacock - Paralympic 100m Champion, local celebrity and a fantastic ambassador for Vindis Group; and we have delved into the world of Trade Parts in an article with our Head of Business at Cambridge TPS Jack Lankester-Bell. On top of this we bring you information on some exciting new green technology that can appeal to all budgets from the ÂŁ100,000 Volkswagen XL1 to our new free Loan Fleet of Courtesy Bikes. We have really enjoyed creating this edition for you, and we hope you enjoy it just as much; and if you have any suggestions for further inclusion (or indeed would like to get involved with writing something yourself) we would love to hear from you; simply email driven@vindisgroup.com All the best, and Merry Christmas. Jamie Vindis Managing Director Vindis Group

Jonnie Peacock MBE A national hero.

G

rowing up in Cambridgeshire, a young, enthusiastic child, that loved his sports and his cars, little did he know that he’d grow up to be one of the biggest sporting heroes from the London 2012 Paralympic Games. A local hero and a household name, Jonnie Peacock captured the nations hearts when he sprinted the 100m T44 at a record pace securing him a Gold Medal and a future only some can dream of. Driven caught up with Jonnie to talk about sports, fame, and of course, his cars. Growing up near Cambridge, Jonnie looks back on his childhood as a happy time and is proud of his roots. “Being brought up in St. Ives, Cambridgeshire was really nice. Cambridge is really pretty and well kept and it was an honour to grow up there. It was an eye opener when I started competing and going to other cities.” With bright eyes beaming and a passion for sports, Jonnie was always destined for greater things. Aged five, he had his leg amputated below the knee after contracting meningitis. Despite the struggles, Jonnie continued to get involved in sports. “I did a bit of everything as a kid, I have always loved sport. I played football and rugby for my school and I also played for a local football team for a year or so.” With a clear determination and passion, Jonnie was like any other child. Until, in 2009, he took up sprinting; with an undeniable talent, Jonnie was unaware of the champion future that lay ahead.

“I got an email back the same day inviting me to London” “I didn’t start training for my sprinting until around my 16th birthday. That is when I met my first coach and just after that we started training.” Although a latecomer to athletics, Jonnie is now 100% committed to developing his talent. Jonnie tells the story of how it all started “I went to the limb centre where I get my legs made and there was a poster on the wall that said ‘Are you between this age? Are you active? Do you enjoy sport?’. I spoke to the person who makes

my leg about it and I got an email back the same day inviting me to London. I went down and tried out a load of sports including 60 meter sprint and things really took off from there!” A mesmerising 2012 meant that Jonnie rocketed to fame after, in June 2012, he became the world’s fastest amputee sprinter when he won the US trials in 10.85 seconds. His time was 0.06 seconds faster than the previous T44 record set in 2007 by USA’s Marlon Shirley. A couple of months later, Jonnie went one step further by winning a Gold Medal in front of his home crowd of 80,000 people at the Paralympic Games, he also achieved a Paralympic record with his time of 10.91. Although a keen sportsman, Jonnie had no expectation of how far he would progress in the athletics field. “When I started I was very naïve, I didn’t know that much about Paralympic sport and there were these guys taking it really seriously saying they’re looking for people to go and compete at London, that’s when I thought I might have a shot.” “After being involved for a year or so I realised it was going to be much tougher than I thought, I thought Rio might be possible, but I never really thought London would be on the cards.” While the world went crazy for London 2012, the home crowds cheered on our British stars, and the Olympic and Paralympic fever swept the nation. We asked Jonnie what it was like to be inside the Paralympic village. “It was brilliant. It all flew by and life really kicked off for me then. Just being in the village was amazing, being able to hang out with all my friends. I have never really been anywhere like that so being part of the environment was great - it was a whole village of sport!” And of course, Jonnie took that enthusiasm onto the track as he battled it out in the 100m T44 race. The race that took him from a journey he’ll never forget, where he became a household name and a gold medallist. At his first Paralympic games, Jonnie tells us what it was like to be presented a gold medal in front of a cheering home crowd.

“I am really excited for the future” “It is really hard to put into words. It was just unbelievable. I knew when I got there I was fast enough to win it, if I ran a good race. I was really pumped!” Many would consider a Paralympic Gold in front of your home crowd a career climax, but not for Jonnie. “Life got busy for me after the Paralympics, but then life gets back to normal quite quickly. I live a similar life to before the Paralympics. I wake up and go to training everyday like I did before the games.” London 2012 marked the start of an exciting future as he spiralled into fame, but still managed to stay grounded and focussed on what was important; his sprinting. “I definitely would never class myself as a celebrity. Competition carries on, we had the World Championships so I had to get focussed again.” Jonnie continued. As preparations begin for Rio 2016, life as an athlete can become very focused. Jonnie speaks of his plans to ensure he is at the highest level he can be. “I have increased my training to five days a week. “I’m with a new coach now and have moved to Loughborough to train up there. This will be the first time I will have been able to get a decent winter with

of the sponsorship “We look forward to working closely with Jonnie, he is such an iconic figure in the local community who we are proud to associate ourselves with.” Since then, Jonnie has been in a number of cars from the Group. “I am in a Q3 at the moment, the smallest 4x4 Audi do. It really helps my back being in a bigger car. It is the best car I have driven so far, and it’s awesome to be able to drive to training in a nice car!” “It is important for me to stay local so the fact that Vindis is from where I grew up is great as I used to go past the showroom all the time. When the new Scirocco came out I remember looking at it and thinking I can’t wait to be able to drive a car that great.” Over the last year, we have worked closely with Jonnie to make sure that this sponsorship works smoothly for both himself and the Vindis Group. He has been an enthusiastic and iconic figure that we are pleased that we can support. “It is great to be affiliated with Vindis and be an ambassador for them.” Jonnie said of the partnership.

“It is important for me to stay local” We are proud to associate ourselves with such an influential local figure. Jonnie has continued to support the Vindis Group through attending several of our events and we look forward to long and prosperous partnership as we go into 2014.

a coach and that will make a huge difference; we are looking to get some consistent training in so I am really excited for the future.” Sport is not the only passion in Jonnie’s life, ever since he was young he has had a keen interest in cars. “I have always loved cars. I love fixing things and working with my hands so I have always loved tinkering around with cars. My Mum’s car blew a head gasket once and I went out with a tool kit and took apart the engine and rebuilt it.” However, this interest in the motor industry goes beyond just a love of cars. In earlier years, Jonnie had a very different idea of his future. “I actually worked in a garage in St Ives from 14 to 17 just cleaning up but it was great to be around cars and watch people work on them. I remember speaking to my Dad about maybe getting an apprenticeship with the Vindis Group. It was definitely an option I was looking at.” In April 2013, the Vindis Group began an exciting partnership with Jonnie Peacock MBE as he picked up his first car, an Audi A3 2.0 TDI S line S tronic, from our Managing Director, Jamie Vindis, who said

The Amarok Adventure We test out the toughest terrains at our specially designed 4x4 course.

T

o celebrate the launch of the Volkswagen Amarok, the Vindis Van Centres at both Northampton and St. Ives held innovative offsite 4x4 events at the newly built offroad course at Grendon Lakes, in Northamptonshire. Grendon Lakes is already home to a number of watersports activities; including wakeboarding and hover crafting. Vindis Van Centre Northampton has agreed a two year sponsorship agreement for the 4x4 course, of which they will have exclusive use of it for that period of time. The Vindis Van Centres showed their customers how far an Amarok really can go at an offroad driving day at the Vindis Group’s specially designed 4x4 course; the Amarok Adventure. The events began as customers arrived at their local Vindis Van Centre where they were greeted by tea, coffee and treats before heading off to Grendon Lakes in a chauffeured Amarok convoy. Customers spent the day clutching to their seats as they took on the toughest of terrains, including a specially designed Builders Yard in keeping with the Commercial Vehicles brand. Fully trained instructors took each customer on the track with over 20 different 4x4 experiences that gave everybody a mix of thrills and spills. This innovative event was a great way to demonstrate the immense power and agility of the Amarok, and gave customers the chance to experience it for themselves. With adrenaline high, and their driving skills pushed to the extreme, the customers were transported to the lake where their day came to a spectacular finale with a watersports display from the Club Wake Park professional team. Dan Ellis, Brand Manager at Vindis Van Centre Northampton, said: “This partnership with Ride Leisure will allow us to offer driving experiences to Amarok customers, both pre and post-purchase.” “It will give us a unique opportunity to provide great customer experience and a value-added service that will differentiate us from other retailers.” Over the next two years the Vindis Group look forward to many more exciting events as we continue our partnership with the Grendon Lakes.

A tribute to an incredible man.

V

indis Van Centre St. Ives recently unveiled four exclusive, limited edition vehicles in its showroom on Low Road, St. Ives. The NV Edition has been designed and created by the team at Vindis Van Centre St. Ives in memory of Nigel Vindis, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Until April 2013, the Vindis Group was jointly managed by Gary and Nigel Vindis, who had both been involved in the business from a very young age. Their astuteness as businessmen; their passion for motor vehicles; and the core family values they instilled into the Company, resulted in the continued development that the Group has enjoyed over recent years. The loss of Nigel through illness in April 2013 was one not only felt by his family but to every employee within the Vindis Group. In tribute to Nigel, the team at St. Ives have designed four one-of-a-kind vehicles that have the unique Vindis touch. The NV Edition includes a Caddy, a Transporter, an Amarok and a Caravelle. The specification and trim on each vehicle feature unique designs by the St. Ives team that include: - Bespoke body wrapping - Body styling kit (front & rear spoiler) - Daytime running lights - Lowered suspension - Powder coated black Sportline alloys - Bespoke plylining to enhance sound deadening For more information on the NV Edition vehicles, contact Vindis St. Ives and the team will be happy to talk you through the features.

Vindis Huntingdon Launch The Volkswagen Experience; Past, Present & Future.

O

n Thursday 24th October 2014, Vindis Volkswagen launched its newest addition to the Group; the Flagship retailer, Vindis Huntingdon. An evening of elegance, celebration and pure admiration of Volkswagen heritage; Past, Present and Future. You drive down Washingley Road and are greeted by a building so exquisite in design, a true reflection of the passion, vision and view the Vindis Group and Volkswagen Huntingdon have for their future in their new home. A blue carpet awaits, you step towards the bustling atmosphere of the filled room. Customers, press, Vindis family, staff, and directors from Volkswagen UK all mingle and enjoy the entertainment provided – including the canapés and blue cocktails (well they had to be blue, really). An exhibition it said, of past, present and future. That exactly it was, in more ways than we could have ever expected. We were privileged to have the company at our launch evening from a very special customer, Phil Dimmock, who excitedly attended, with photos in hand. The Vindis History goes back a long way, and no one can explain it better than one of our most longstanding customers. Mr. Dimmock purchased his car in 1969 from Frank Vindis himself, one of the

12

first German cars we ever sold as a company. He told us the heart-warming story of how he moved to Sawston from London and showed us the pictures he took of his beloved vehicle. The present. We reflected upon the excellent standard of vehicle that the Volkswagen brand has produced. Sitting side by side to the 1950’s Beetle is the current Beetle, you can see how far the motor industry has come, yet it still keeps those classic characteristics that first captured our hearts for the ‘Love Bug’. At present, Vindis Huntingdon has a lot to look forward to; an enthusiastic and determined team, an impressive new home and a customer base so loyal. The future. As the motor industry continues to expand, cars are becoming electric, more dynamic, more powerful, more stylish. Our showrooms are beginning to reflect this. The Vindis Huntingdon showroom, along with several others within the Vindis Volkswagen portfolio, reflect the new Volkswagen Corporate Identity Guidelines. A friendly environment, we’d like our new showroom to be a place you can pop in and not feel pressured, and we’d like to hope you can stay for a coffee and have a chat with our team. And when displaying the future, what better way to excite the guests of our launch evening than to

reveal the most exclusive Volkswagen we currently have; the XL1. Sitting pretty, underneath a silver sheet, the world’s most fuel efficient vehicle awaited. Guests talked between themselves about what they were expecting to see, whilst the cars’ very own bodyguard, who previously worked for the Vindis Group, kept a watching eye. The car was revealed to a round of applause and unison gasp from crowds as cameras flashed all around. PopBang Colour artist Ian Cook wowed the crowds with his unique interpretation of painting, using remote control cars, parts of tyres and many other things – but not a paintbrush. He completed the iconic Polo WRC car that he started at Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier in the year. And whilst art was on the mind, Vindis Volkswagen supported Children in Need with their very own paint by numbers onto a Volkswagen up!. Customers were asked to donate to charity and in return make their mark by colouring in a section of the Pudsey car. Our photographer, Rob Holding, took our guests to Vegas, not literally but as good as, in our interactive experience recreating the Golf GTI advert. Paralympic Gold Medalist, Jonnie Peacock, gave an insightful interview with Vindis Group Marketing Manager Paul Woodhouse, he talked about his childhood growing up in the local area and how he used to drive past St. Ives in admiration. He signed autographs, posed for photos, a special customer even came in with her Gamesmaker passes to meet her hero. The official ribbon cutting took place at 8.30pm, following a speech from Jamie Vindis, Managing Director of the Vindis Group and Robert Hazelwood, Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars. The ribbon was cut by the Mayor of Huntingdon, alongside Jamie and Robert. Celebrations continued throughout the night and guests left with a gift bag in hand, an album of photographs and a smile on their face. With a successful launch night, and a prosperous future ahead, the team at Vindis Huntingdon have a new target, delivering a second-to-none customer experience to match their surroundings.

The road to the quattro Cup 2013! Colin Moody, a Vindis Group customer, tells the story of his quattro Cup experience.

P

eople who know me know I am passionate about two things; golf and cars! For many years I was like a nomad when it came to owning and changing my type of car, but that pretty much ended when I walked into the Vindis Group’s Huntingdon Audi dealership about seven years ago. Ever since that day I have consistently had one or more Audi’s on the go; well I am known for changing my Audi’s as often as I change my socks! It was Huntingdon Audi who introduced me to the Audi quattro Cup and combined my two passions. The hugely popular Audi quattro Cup golf tournament has been running for over 20 years. In 2013, Audi dealers from 52 different countries worldwide will have organised a total of 965 tournaments with over 100,000 amateur golfers who participated, simply trying to make it to the World final in Los Angeles. In the UK alone there were 42 separate dealership rounds, eight Regional Finals and then the UK Final. Approximately 2,300 players took part in the Audi quattro Cup in 2013 in the UK. For my son Kieran and I, the journey began with the Vindis dealerships round at Hanbury Manor golf club in Hertfordshire. We were fortunate to have the support of the team at Huntingdon Audi who lent us an A5 Cabriolet

16

for the trip, the model was a 2.0 TDI 177 S line Special Edition. Not only was it beautifully smooth and great to drive but it was surprisingly roomy, able to carry ourselves and two golf bags and trolleys; it really was fun to drive. As for the golf, it was a warm sunny day and the course was in great shape. Luckily for us, our golf was just good enough and we finished in the top eight which meant we were selected to go through to the regional final at The Belfry’s Brabazon course. Under quattro Cup rules the final eight that go through to regional finals are teamed up to create four pairs to play together. Bizarrely, as Kieran and I came sixth and fifth respectively, we were paired together as a father and son partnership!

“Kieran and I had scraped through!” A month after Hanbury Manor, the Moody pairing were in the West Midlands for the regional final at The Belfry. Huntingdon Audi surpassed themselves by supplying us with a stunning A8 3.0 Tdi 245PS, SE Executive Long wheel base - it was like driving a palace on wheels! The car’s wonderful upholstery and wood inlay added to its effortlessly smooth and powerful engine, a combination that made it a pleasure to drive. Kieran and I played quite well, but to be honest we didn’t hold out much hope of being one of the top three pairs who would go through to the prestigious UK final at Bowood Golf and Country Club in Wiltshire. Once we had sat down after finishing our round, had some food and a drink, we suddenly realized that with just a few pairings left to

Arriving at the hotel just before midday we pulled up at the main entrance and the supremely efficient combined team from TMB Events (quattro Cup event managers for Audi) and Bowood took over everything. Clubs and trolleys were whisked off, assembled and left waiting for us at Bowood’s driving range. Suit holdalls and bags were collected by the Bowood team ready to be moved into our rooms later that afternoon, while we registered with the wonderfully organized and efficient Claire and Emma from TMB Events. All that was left for us to do was get changed into our golfing gear, have some lunch in the excellent brasserie and get ready for our practice round that afternoon on Bowood’s challenging course.

“The extremely comfortable Q7 managed it all with ease”

finish we were standing equal third with the other Vindis pairing of Chris Moxon (Peterborough Audi) and Brian Shepherd (Huntingdon Audi). As it happens, the remaining pairs were unable to match our scores, so when it came to the presentation ceremony one of the two Vindis pairings would be going on to Bowood and for the other pairing the journey would be over. It all came down to which pairing scored the best on the last nine holes…and Kieran and I had scraped through! It was a shame that Chris and Brian couldn’t join us, but I know both will be trying again in 2014. On the afternoon of Tuesday 3rd September, I dropped into Huntingdon Audi and picked up from Paul Phelan an Audi Q7 3.0 TDI quattro 245PS S line Plus for the three day trip. First thing the next morning Kieran, myself and Jayne Stevens from Vindis drove down to the Bowood hotel. We needed a car that big to carry three adults, golf bags, a trolley and all of our clothes, etc. The extremely comfortable Q7 managed it all with ease, and was a joy to drive. So smooth and powerful, it just glided down the motorway. For such a big car, it handles beautifully.

After a successful and enjoyable practice round, the UK finalists gathered together for a BBQ and drinks that evening, fabulous food and service followed by drinks in the bar, brought an end to day one. All the golfers were up bright and early on the Thursday for the main event; breakfast eaten and practicing completed before the formalities commenced. All the golfers were looking extremely smart in their Audi quattro shirts and jumpers as we lined up for a group photo behind the stunning white Audi R8 next to the putting green. Once the group photo was finished the golfers took it in turn to head for the first tee for more photos and a briefing on the rules for the competition, and then we were off. Well Kieran and I didn’t play as well as we had on the practice round, but we didn’t disgrace ourselves. The course had been long and tough, but in excellent shape. Andrew and Ian from the TMB events team met us at the end and made sure we marked our cards properly, and reminded us to keep our scores to ourselves, as that would add to the drama later that evening when the winners were announced during the formal meal. All that was left for the golfers to do was sit down in the brasserie’s court yard with a well-earned drink (or two) and watch as the incredible Geoff Swain, World Golf Trick Shot Champion, who entertained us with some golf shots and tricks that beggared belief. After a rest and shower, it was time for everyone to don their fineries and gather for the final meal. As we looked around the tables the pairs struggling to contain their excitement, and that pent up excitement finally exploded for the winners Mike Broad and Andrew Witter (Ipswich Audi), and second place pairing Simon Healy and Tom Ciullo (Sheffield/Doncaster Audi) as it was announced they were heading to Los Angeles! The drinks flowed that evening and the celebrations went on long into the night. Whilst every other golfer was disappointed to not be going to the World Final, in truth getting to the UK final and being treated like royalty by Audi and Bowood while we were there; well that was the prize. Our sincere thanks go to Audi UK, TMB Events, the Bowood team, and most importantly to Huntingdon Audi and the Vindis Group for the invite to take part, as well as the wonderful support they gave us during every step on that road to the UK final of the 2013 Audi quattro Cup.

“...being treated like royalty by Audi and Bowood while we were there; well that was the prize.” 17

Like our cars, we’re going eco-friendly. Three Vindis Group retailers take an alternative approach to loan cars.

A

s more economical, fuel efficient and ‘greener’ cars are developed, three Vindis Group retailers have followed the trend and have unveiled an innovative new courtesy bike scheme for customers of their service centres. The Cambridge based retailers offer customers that come in for service and MOT bookings the opportunity to borrow an all-new battery-powered bike while technicians complete work on their car. Vindis Group dealerships; ŠKODA Cambridge on Cowley Road, Cambridge Audi on Babraham Road and Cambridge Volkswagen on Milton Road have impressed their service customers as they offer them an alternative form of transport. Across the Vindis Group, we offer our customers Service Loan Cars to ensure that no inconvenience is caused to their daily life when it comes to having their vehicle serviced. So in a city as beautiful as Cambridge, and with a cycling culture that is so prominent, we are proud to say that our local dealerships are now offering bicycles to loan instead. The hybrid bike is equipped with a convenient wireless security key, easyto-remove magnetic plug battery and next-generation motor controller. Designed with stability in mind, this bike

seamlessly integrates pedal power with the output of the motor for a smoother ride. Matthew Wootton, Head of Business at SKODA Cambridge, who pioneered the project, said: “Cambridge is a city where cycling is a very popular mode of transport. We as a motor group also recognise both the physical and environmental benefits of offering an alternative to service loan cars.“They’re an option as we have a number of customers who bring their bikes with them when having a service or MOT.” adds Matthew. “Many of our customers work within a three-mile radius and having the option to loan an electric bike saves them bringing their bikes with them. Indeed some customers want to just have a ride while they wait.”Geoff Lowe, Head of Business of Cambridge Audi, and Andy Sinclair, Brand Manager of Cambridge Volkswagen, also received the battery-powered bikes for their dealerships. While customers enjoy the innovative new bikes, we are confident that the highly skilled technicians at our retailers will continue to deliver a hassle-free, reliable service and a memorable customer experience. “We thought it was a good move.” says The Electric Transport Shop’s director, Jamie McAlley. “They’ve taken eight bikes. They’re really easy to use they have a swipe keyfob, which is a first, like a keyless car. They’re ideal for a quick trip into town.”So if you’re ever popping by a Vindis Group retailer and feeling fit, why not ask about our Loan Bikes.

The Audi Sport Showcase.

C

hallenging the idea of a conventional dealership, the Vindis Group hosted a special invitation-only Ride and Drive day to showcase the latest Audi supercar models at Rockingham Speedway. The Audi Sport Showcase event saw over 300 customers from the Audi centres in Bedford, Cambridge, Huntingdon, Northampton and Peterborough attend. Customers pre-booked themselves onto an unaccompanied test drive in a vehicle from the S and RS model range and previous World Sports Car of the Year, the R8. The drive was a predetermined route in the Rockingham surroundings, and for most, the prospect of getting behind the wheel of a powerful and dynamic car was enough to set their hearts racing. And as we like to be different, we didn’t just stop at the test drives. We took our quattro models to the test on Rockingham’s state-of-the-art Wet Grip Area, which combines a kick-plate, water walls and lowfriction Basalt tiles, to simulate a variety of driving conditions including ice, rain and wet leaves. The excitable screams could be heard for miles as the SQ5, A6 Bi Turbo and RS6 Avant demonstrated unique grip and handling, as well as providing an exhilarating experience and drive. For those who consider themselves an adventurer, the venue’s 4x4 off-road course proved popular, providing an exciting and realistic way for customers to try out the cars’ suspension and handling on the toughest of terrains. Not only were customers offered the chance to enjoy the cars from behind the steering wheel, the event also featured a whole host of entertainment, including

R8 gaming pods and a world-class air display by The Blades Aerobatic Display Team that had guests “Oohing” and “Aah-ing” as the spitfires demonstrated loopthe-loop and vertical drops. Guests were provided with complimentary breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea and entertainment throughout the day to ensure everyone left the venue with a smile on their face. While parents were kept busy enjoying Vorsprung durch Technik at its finest, younger members of the family were looked after by the in-house crèche that was manned by fully trained nursery nurses, where they were treated to their own mini cinema screen, remote control slot car track, as well as arts and crafts. Chief Executive of Rockingham, Peter Hardman, said: “We were really pleased to host the Vindis Group at Rockingham. It’s a brilliant concept, and a great way to really engage with clients away from the usual sales environment.” Vindis Group Marketing Manager, Paul Woodhouse, added: “Audi showcase events are highly successful and popular which allow us to reach out and engage with our clients on a different level, and provide an opportunity to experience the Audi brand in a fun and informal atmosphere. “Rockingham is the ideal venue for us, as we like to offer our customers a wide range of fun things to do on the day and the flexibility of the venue’s facilities allowed us to do just that.” With a vibrant atmosphere and smiles beaming from ear to ear, the Vindis Group Audi Sport Showcase was a success. As the sparkling clean customer cars left the car park, goodie bag in tow, the event came to a close, until next year of course.

The Rapid Spaceback, the name says it all. The latest addition to the ŠKODA family.

L

aunching in January 2014, the highly anticipated addition to the ŠKODA range, the Rapid Spaceback, will be available in three trim levels; S, SE and Elegance and with prices starting from just £14,340 OTR, this car is stylish yet affordable. The exterior demonstrates elegance, with a striking design and defined lines, whilst the interior is in keeping with the classic ŠKODA style, oozing practicality and simply clever touches. To make it your very own, the Rapid Spaceback comes with an array of personalisation options that allows you to tailor the vehicle to your own taste, including a large panoramic glass roof and extended tailgate glass, both of which adds to the unique appearance of the new model. The second model in the Rapid range, it sets sector standards for interior space and offers exceptional practicality thanks to its 415-litre boot. As is typical of all ŠKODA models, the interior of the new Rapid Spaceback offers a lot of space. Despite the exterior of the new model measuring 18cm less than the Rapid, passenger space is just as generous as in the car’s ‘big brother’. The rear of the Rapid Spaceback boasts impressive amounts of leg room (64mm) and headroom (980mm) and the boot space is equally impressive, with a maximum capacity of 415 litres with the rear seats up and 1,380 litres with the rear seats down. Customers can choose from an extensive range of engines, with three petrol and two diesel options. Power outputs range from 86PS to 122PS, and the choice between manual and DSG automatic transmissions. There will also be a GreenLine version, with CO2 emissions of just 99g/km. BENTLEY

By Design A

venue so exquisite in design, so deep in history and so full of character. You couldn’t have picked a more suitable place to host the Bentley by Design event than the Jockey Club Rooms in Newmarket. The metal gates that surrounded the building opened as the vehicles approached, guests walked past the display of prestige Bentley’s, then approached the big white doors and waited, in true Bentley fashion, for the footman to hold the door open. The entertainment flowed through the long halls of Bentley Cambridge and into the ‘market place’ that took over the rooms. Guests arrived in their fineries, jewellery sparkling, watches gleaming, it seemed the fashion show spread further than the red carpet. An array of beautiful dresses, impeccable suits, and accessories that some can only dream would be a centrepiece of their wardrobe.

24

As guests mingled, behind the scenes preparations were coming to a head, and to the excitement of most, at 7pm, the show officially began. The Bentley Bake Off came first, with Head Chef Tim Turner from the Jockey Club Rooms hosting a friendly competition between boys and girls which was later followed by a demonstration of a stringing of a pearl by local jewellers, Cellini. Whilst in the main room the Accafella’s wowed crowds with their rendition of chart hits, performed solely with their voices and no instrumental background. Then for the main entertainment. The majestic dining room, transformed into a glamorous auditorium with a red carpet running perfectly under the beautiful chandeliers. Guests took their seats ready for the show to begin. Firstly, Stephen Millward, Head of Vindis Bentley, took to the stage to officially begin the evening, followed by Graham Butland, CEO of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices who gave a heart-warming speech that highlighted the very reason everyone had gathered for this event; to raise money for an amazing local charity. Now for the ladies fashion, as they progressed from casual wear right through to evening glamour, Martha V demonstrated the unique clothing range, that suits all ages, shapes and sizes at her boutique shop located in Newmarket, Cambridgeshire. The ladies fell in love with the clothing as they hinted to their husbands for potential Christmas gifts, so much so that two dresses were sold there and then on the evening. Dame Evelyn Glennie, a female solo percussionist who in fact performed at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, gave an inspirational speech about people’s interpretation of emotion through body language and music.

Guests took a short break exploring the market place, falling in love with the Bentley Bears, the unique jewellery, the Holland and Holland guns, the Meridian watches to name but a few. For many, it was like Christmas had come early, and for most the Christmas spirit and excitement was certainly in the air, before everyone returned to the main room for the Auction. Stephen Millward, with passion exuding in his speech, chaired the Auction. Not only was the purpose for guests to have a bit of fun, it was important to remember that all gifts had been donated by the Affinity Partners, very generous customers and Bentley UK. All proceeds raised went directly to Bentley Cambridge’s chosen charity East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, whom, over the last two years, have become more than a partner, but very close friends of Bentley Cambridge. The charity, which has hospices in Milton, Quidenham, and Ipswich, supports families and cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions. With items, such as an exclusive F1 Opus book, that weighed 82 pounds, and amazing once in a lifetime experiences, including a meal for four cooked in your own home by Head Chef Tim Turner of the Jockey Club Rooms. Needless to say, the guests did their bit for charity as they bid upon these luxury items, helping toward the fundraising target we’d set for the night. And for an evening titled Bentley by Design, the entertainment just kept coming. Next to take to the stage was our sporting round table, with Leicester Tigers and England International Player, Geoff Parling, and Jonnie Peacock MBE, Paralympic Gold Medallist. The witty interview was conducted by the CEO of EACH, Graham Butland. It had the audience hooked as we learned about two sporting heroes that have represented our country, and both bringing home victories that can only be commended as achievements of the highest level. We were proud to host such sporting greats at our event, and from the cheers, it seemed that the guests were feeling the same way. Earlier, the ladies had their fun, now it was time for the gentleman’s part of the evening, beginning with a fashion show by Holland and Holland and James Cox of Ely. In the spirit of charity, instead of professional models, the team at Bentley Cambridge and Vindis Group took to the red carpet to showcase the very latest fashion from the designers. Cheers roared and laughter flowed as our amateur models worked the crowds, an interactive way to show the fun side of our business. As the event was for charity, it meant only one thing, Mr Stephen Millward, who had organised the event, had to ask for that last extra donation. This time for something no one was expecting, the best kept secret of the event he said, and it sure did live up to expectations. Every person in the room donated £20 for Stephen to join the Accafella’s in a performance of the hit single ‘Mercy’, and that was worth every penny. Video cameras at the ready, the performance began. It’s safe to say that Stephen’s career will not be changing to a male vocalist any time soon, however, the entertainment value and the charitable spirit in the room was second-tonone. The true meaning of charity; putting yourself on the line for a cause so close to our hearts, and every person involved in the Bentley by Design event put an incredible amount of effort, time and passion into making it the huge success it was. Throughout the night the Champagne was flowing and the atmosphere was buzzing and laughter was vibrant in every room of this unique event. Every guest that left did so with a smile on their face, and from the team at Bentley Cambridge, and the Vindis Group, we are truly grateful for every person that supported us and helped us raise approximately £15,000 on the night.

The Cambridge Chop House.

O

A little treasure in the picturesque Cambridge setting.

ne is blown away by the beautiful surroundings, so much so that you almost miss the quaint little venue tucked away on the corner. Outside it gets lost in the idyllic Cambridge scenery, yet inside you’re taken into a world of chic, sophisticated, class. Situated on the corner of Kings Parade, the view from inside is the postcard view of Kings College, a beautifully crafted building within the Cambridge University portfolio. Part of the Cambscuisine group, the Cambridge Chop House has been open six years, and has established itself in the local community in that time. Proud of its roots, the Chop House sources all of its produce locally, from family run businesses, all apart from the Wine and Fish. All of the wine is sourced from Languedoc-Roussillon, in the south of France. It’s the only restaurant known to focus its wine list entirely on this region of France. The fish is from a sustainable fishery in the north of the UK as they support the ethical values that this fishery has. As described by General Manager, Richard Kruller “Our speciality is meat”, in fact the Victorian name for steak house is chop house, which is where the name originated from. That’s why, after 7pm the steaks are brought out on a chopping board and guests are talked through each piece of meat, what drink accompanies it, and the best way to cook it. Richard described how they try and develop their staff, and their knowledge of the products. With regular visits from suppliers and staff quizzes, the Cambscuisine group ensure that all staff have the confidence and knowledge in what they are selling. ”Product knowledge is key, training is important and to a certain extent we know what field each cow came from, and what grass they ate” explained Richard. Being the only restaurant in Cambridge to sell local cask ale from the barrel is just another quirky element that makes the Cambridge Chop House so distinctive and rare. For a Monday lunchtime the venue was bustling, with a variety of ages and after our tour we were shown to our seat, overlooking the streets of Cambridge. “Can I choose for you?” Richard asked, it was clear on my face I was worried after looking at the interesting menu. To start we were given Kingston Black Apple Apertif, a drink so sweet you found yourself gasping for more. Then the Grazing Plate came out, consisting of Haggis Fritters, Pork Crackling, homemade Piccalilli, Beetroot Cured Salmon, Mixed Leaf Salad, Godminster Mature Cheddar and a Game Terrine, made from Rabbit, Venison, Pigeon, and Pheasant. Ingredients that you wouldn’t necessarily place together, yet complimented each other so perfectly. It’s the

26

unique dishes like this that make this place so special, one’s curiosity controls your senses and you try things you probably wouldn’t normally have, and you realise how rich in flavours these dishes are. With as little as a few salad leaves left on the plate, the grazing platter had most certainly been grazed. We were brought out a glass of Le Ciel Vide, a wine so rich in flavour and character. Produced by Domaine Treloar, who’s story is remarkably touching. The lived and worked in New York, 500m from the Twin Towers. On September 11th 2001 they witnessed an event which changed their entire outlook, they left New York and moved to follow a lifelong dream. The main courses arrived, an ale braised ox cheek, accompanied with smoked mash, bashed carrot & swede, greens and port sauce, and a 16oz Beef Chop Rib Eye on the bone, cooked medium, and paired with smoked mash and port sauce. Senses were alight with both dishes, the scents so strong with flavour that even thinking back to the dish now it’s mouth-watering. The meat was cooked to perfection and so tender it fell apart on the knife, the flavours in the mash complimented the meat flawlessly and every mouthful was a taste sensation. Dinner concluded with Peppermint tea from a local company, and a ‘Cambridge Burnt Cream’, which was divine. Such moreish flavours exuded through every mouthful and left you wanting to eat it again. For such fine, eloquent cuisine, the portion sizes were generous, and you would only assume from the high standard of food and customer care that the prices would be high too, but not at all. For such a classy venue, the price is very reasonable. This restaurant combines a first class experience with a bill that doesn’t make you say “ouch!” I am one of the fussiest eaters you will come across, a big statement I know – but I think I’d be in the running if there was a competition for it. Once inside the restaurant the passion that Richard had was apparent, it made me feel like I could trust him to produce a dish I would like. So I took the risk, and it paid off. All in all this restaurant does not disappoint, a quaint hideaway in the classic Cambridge setting and inside you’re taken a million miles from everyday life, to a luxury experience with an authentic twist. The upstairs dining resembles that of a French bistro, yet downstairs the white walls and low ceilings with original features make for a characteristic hideaway. It’s one of those places that you’d love to shout about, but at the same time want to keep as your hidden gem. The Cambridge Chop House is a popular choice in the local area, with tables fully booked in advanced most Fridays and Saturdays. It’s advised you book ahead, but it is also recommended that you, without a doubt, experience this restaurant. It’s so rich in character, and has such a vibrant atmosphere. A perfect place for a special occasion, or simply to treat yourself on any occasion, it’s a true hidden gem within the historic Cambridge streets.

XL1

A car of the future...

30

...built today.

Introducing the Volkswagen XL1...

P

ioneering construction techniques, the Volkswagen XL1 is the world’s most fuel-efficient car. First unveiled at the Qatar Motor Show in 2011, the new Hybrid Volkswagen returns 313 mpg on a combined cycle with 24g/ km CO2 emissions, setting a new benchmark in vehicle efficiency. Production will begin with only 250 examples of the stylish new XL1 that is powered by a compact 800cc TDI twocylinder common rail diesel engine developing 48 PS. It’s linked to an electric motor producing 27 PS. This results in a total of 75 PS – a modest output, yet more than enough when the low kerb weight (795 kg) of the vehicle is taken into account. Tucked neatly behind the two seats, the TDI engine is linked to an electric motor and a seven-speed DSG gearbox with an automatic clutch mounted between each unit. The electric motor can either work independently of the TDI engine or in tandem when accelerating. Accelerating from rest to 62 mph can be achieved in 11.9 seconds; the electronically limited top speed is 99 mph. Thanks to its plug-in hybrid system, the two-seater can cover a distance of up to 50 km in all-electric mode with zero emissions as a result. To make it more streamlined, the XL1 has cameras instead of wing mirrors. This unique addition adds to the futuristic feel that the new Volkswagen embodies, and proves the extent of the detail that the designers went to in making this supercar. Every part of the bodywork has been designed for lightweight and aerodynamic efficiency, with gullwing doors to add to the supercar feel, and the Volkswagen badge sitting proudly on the bonnet, not the grille. In essence, this vehicle is a class-leading marvel. On paper it has all the aspects to make a supercar, with the price tag and efficiency of anything but. In reality the sleek design and powerful engine makes this new vehicle a revolution in engineering excellence. Look out for the Volkswagen XL1 coming to showrooms in the UK soon, we’re sure you won’t be able to miss this head turner of a vehicle.
