Motor4Toys 2010 The 2010 Motor4toys Charity Car Show and Toy Drive was a huge success. As I am writing this, the toy drive is still going on. As of Dec. 15th, we are well past the 27,000 toy mark. We are targeted to exceed our 30,000 toy goal, which is absolutely amazing. Thank you! Over the years, many people have asked how or why Motor4toys came about. For me, it is simple: My father was raised in an orphanage and my mother as a child, received toys from organization like Motor4toys, otherwise they would have had none. It was the kindness of others that help them, and I appreciate that. The first year we held the Motor4toys charity car show, we had no idea it would be such a huge success or Motor4toys would turn into what it has, thanks to all of you. Every year, the event has grown, from our start at Village Coffee Roaster to now having to seek out facilities that can handle thousands of cars, what a great problem to have. There is a miracle that happens every year at Motor4toys: The small staff that embodies Motor4toys is less that a handful, however, the day before and the day of, it swells to fifty or sixty. People just show up. I cannot explain it, I don’t question it, I am grateful for it. For years now, there is one family that I have no contact with and they come as well as ten of their friends. They just show up and handle a huge portion of the toy collecting, counting, and packaging. Then there are the people that ask if they can help and I jokingly say, “sure, we will be there at 3:30am and they show up!” at 3:30am and some from as far as Palmdale. WOW! I don’t know where these people come from, but they too are part of the fabric of Motor4toys. Thank you to them as well. Our sponsors. First and foremost, there is a very private collector that quietly ensures that there will be a “next year”. Thank you for your years of support, without you, well…….Thank you. Now to our 2010 sponsors, as is the tradition for some odd reason, we normally do not have a sponsor until a month or so out. I can’t explain it, but I really start stressing, especially in this economy. Well, this year we had new sponsors who I hope will continue to support and be a part of Motor4toys. Motor 4 Toys: 2010 Recap
D
espite the state of the economy, once again more than 3,000 cars gathered from all over California to collect toys and money to help needy children have a shot at a happier Christmas during the 7th Annual Motor4Toys event in Woodland Hills, California. Even better for us, those 3,000 cars were just about universally interesting – collectible, classic and exotic vehicles that made this one of the most enjoyable car shows of the year. Certainly the largest. Along with a special gallery of supercars and Hollywood rides, whole rows were devoted to different makes so visitors could wander past a full line of Porsches, Ferraris, Corvettes, American Iron, Volkswagens, Lotuses, Cobras or just about anything else they might fancy. Besides coming out to donate toys, the Southern California car clubs made this a typically great event by not only sharing their rides with the assembled crowd, but also by opening their pocketbooks to bid on a number of donated gifts in the silent and live auctions. Last year's record of 25,000 toys seemed like a tough act to follow, especially considering the ongoing global economic crisis, but the mountains of toys we saw at the site seemed to say otherwise. This seven-year-old event is still the largest single contrib-

utor of toys to charity causes annually – and it's all done by car people, which makes us proud to be a gearhead. Several law enforcement groups were involved in the proceedings as well, showing off some of their rides and equipment as a thank you for all of the donations. Everything from helicopters and squad cars to battering rams and shotguns were on display, making the parking lot look a bit like a scene from a future installment of the Fast and Furious franchise. One of our favorite vehicles on hand this year was the 1,400-horsepower Dodge Viper that famously
beat a Veyron in a 0-200 run. It actually looks fairly stock from the outside, but under that hood resides a nuclear reactor capable of pushing 1,100 hp through the rear tires. The owner, Tenney, pointed out the holes worn through the rear wheel well liners by the drag radials fitted during the testing. Parked just adjacent was an alloy bodied 275 GTB/2, a Suzuki Samurai rockcrawler that thumbed its nose at Consumer Reports, a streamlined Audi A6 Avant that looked capable of topping even the Viper's top speed, a pristine turquoise Datsun B210, and
a succession of hardware that had us drooling – Alpina B7, Superleggera, Scuderia, V12 Vantage, SLR, Spyker, GTR, CLK Black, Shelby Series 1, SLS...and on and on. Highlights in the more senior ranks included a Lusso, 330 GTS, 512 BBi, chopped '50 Merc, Hotchkis Challenger T/A, Pro Street '70 Chevelle SS,
Alfa Giulia SS, Hurst Barracuda, R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R, Martini X1/9 racer, Triumph Mayflower with a GM V6, an incredible rat rod with sick pinstriping in just the right places, and of course, the ultra-rare Porsche 356 Carrera Speedster. Motor4Toys is a huge undertaking but everyone just does what they
can to make it happen. Many of the supplies and all of the labor are donated, and it's never too late to do your part, too. If you'd like to donate to the cause, you can still do so through the Motor4Toys website.

CAMAROS ON THE RUN
R
emember when the 1969 Z-28 Camaro was putting down 290 horsepower? How about the 1970 Z-28 with the LT 1 motor laying down a scorching 350-horse power? Well my fellow car enthusiast, those days are long gone. Today the new Camaro with a bellowing V-6 motor delivers 300 horsepower! The SS Camaro produces 425 horsepower. In 2011 the new Z-28 will be roaring to life with 625 horsepower! If you can’t wait until the new Z-28 hits the market, there is an alternative; three alternatives to be exact. The alternatives will be coming from SLP. Remember Ed Hamburger, the fairly successful drag racer from the 80’s, who started SLP (Street Legal Performance) in 1986? His company was turning out all kind of performance upgrades for the Pontiac Firebird. A couple of year’s later high performance parts for the Camaro were added. In 1991 SLP introduces the Firehawk, based on the third generation Pontiac. This bird came equipped

with a 350 horsepower 5.7 litre LT1 V8, six speed transmission ripping off 4.5 seconds to 60 mph. Brembo brakes were added for stopping power. The $40,000 price tag keeps the car very exclusive, only 25 were built. 1993 saw the return of the Firehawk. The stock Firebird came with 275-hp motor. SLP added ram-intake to boost power to 300-hp. The sticker price only jumps moderately, $25,000. Only 200 examples are made. 1996 saw the outsourcing for the Camaro SS. SLP won the bid. The SS stickered for $24,500. Once SLP was done with their upgrades (included were a Hurst shifter, sport suspension performance tires, forced air induction and some other goodies) horse power was rated at 305. The Bird received the same upgrades along with a WS6 Ram Air. Zero to 60 times went down to 5.3 seconds. Both cars were priced at $29,900. 2002 saw the end of the F-bodies. SLP would have to wait for another day. All told 55,000 F-body cars were built by SLP. 2009 saw the rise of the Phoenix.
GM re-introduces the new Camaro (but not the Firebird). SLP decides it’s time to place some of their magic in the new car. Three versions will be built, the SLP Camaro ZL465, SLP Camaro ZL585, and the concrete shattering SLP ZL1. T he ZL465 is the tamest of the trio. The additional 40-hp comes from removing the heads of the 6.2 litre LS and replacing the factory springs and rocker arms for roller-bearing units. The valve lift increases 10%. The under drive pulley is replaced by a larger pulley that reduces accessory drive speed by 25%. A Blackwing cold airinduction system (including a high flow intake tube and filter) moves the air more freely than the stock breathing unit. The standard exhaust is upgraded to a Loud Mouth system from the mufflers back. Base price for this package is $41,990. There are other options available. How about hounds tooth seat inserts just like in the original. Adjustable coil-over shocks, SLP short throw shifter, a composite SLP custom hood with a functional hood scoop, ¼
inch thicker adjustable anti roll bars, and a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires mounted on custom five –spoke 9x20 inch front and 10x20 inch rear Red Line wheels with floating center caps just like on Rolls Royce. SLP has a custom aero package too. A front fascia splitter lowers the car by one inch. A rear body colored spoiler resides on the trunk lid. The rest of the package consist of blackout taillight panels and rear- quarterpanel gill inserts, embroidered floor mats and some cool looking exterior badging. How does this new pony car run? The additional horsepower will break loose the rear tires in the first three gears. Once you step up to the SLP ZL585 edition, things start to change dramatically. All the mechanical upgrades seen in the ZL465 package are carried over with the exception of the head work and the under drive pulley, an Eaton TVS Roots-type supercharger pumping out 7 psi of boost. Can you say 120 additional horsepower bolt
on! Top speed is raised to 193 mph due to a new speed chip. The engine is now covered in a custom designed injection molded cover. A custom designed rear diffuser and exhaust outlets finish off the car. All the chassis upgrades found on the ZL465 are found on the ZL585. This edition gets huge Brembo 15inch front rotors with six piston calipers. With the sport suspension package comes stiffer progressive rate springs, which lower the car one inch. The base price of this package $56,995.00. If you add all the options you are looking at a price north of $72,000.00 If more power is what you crave, how about 750 horsepower! That’s the rating of the monster ZL1 package. Forget about the factory engine. SLP pulls out this LS3 motor and replaces it with the LS7 motor V-8 from the Z06. The Z06 motors pumps out 506 horsepower from the factory. The compression ratio is dropped to 10.3:1 so the motor does not grenade once the Eaton supercharger is added. The
Eaton puts out 10 psi of boost. The brakes are upgraded to 16 inch rotors up front with 15s in the rear. Six calipers per brake or now the norm. Forget about the fiberglass hood, the ZL1 gets a carbon fiber unit with a matching rear spoiler. This radical Chevy comes standard with a custom grille, front splitter and rear diffuser. What does all this power get you? How about a top speed of 205 mph! The price is $80,000. That is just for the modifications. You have to supply the car. For those of us more price conscious, SLP offers two more packages. The ZL327 package will upgrade the V-6 motor for under $3000.00. The ZL427 will upgrade the base V-8 for under $6000.00. Best of all, any of these cars can be custom ordered through your local Chevrolet dealers.
