Cars and songs. They go hand in hand. Chuck Berry, that was the album for my dad. His little Ford Courier, which had an 8-track, those were the memories. We played that album ‘till it died. He had one of those 8-track to tape adapters. You may recall, it slid into the 8-track and was this huge cumbersome device. The tape would sit in it and it would transfer the audio through the 8-track. Cutting edge at the time. “Maybelle” by Chuck Berry, that was the song. My dad, who could not hold a tune to save his life, would play that over and over. When that song would come on, it would take him to another place, carefree and he would sing and I would join in. We would sing as if there was no care in the world. In our bubble of sound, singing our hearts out. That little Ford truck, squeaking and rattling, on the way to soccer or basketball, going up Topanga Canyon, “Maybelle...why can’t you be true...” You younger people may not have any idea what I am talking about and I am not so old at forty-two, but man those songs. I can remember sitting in the McDonald’s “drive-through” in my mother’s 1985 Toyota van. We were in the “drive-through” and they forgot something. I had put it on a more modern station, when she went back into McDonalds. A song came on by LL Cool J, “Going back to Cali,” I turned the bass all the way up, thought bass was pronounced like the fish and distorted the hell out of those factory Toyota speakers. I probably blew them all out right then and there, but man, it sounded so good! I must have been twelve. My mom drove a Capri for a while. It had those nifty lights on the “A pillar” for reading maps. Talk about innovation and value added. She had a Neil Diamond cassette. I believe it was his greatest hits and it was half black and half white. I really didn’t enjoy the album, but, that “Coming to America” song, yea, I would belt that baby out. When my brother turned sixteen, our grandmother bought him a brand spanking new 1989 5.0 Mustang GT with a 5 speed and a sun roof. He was king of the campus for sure at El Camino High School. Vanilla Ice, that funny “white-boy” who was oh so cool with his baggy pants and his high-top bleached hair. “Ice Ice Baby,” that was the song. Back then you could buy a tape with one song on each side at a fraction of the price of the full album. There was a music/video store in the El Camino Shopping Center. I think it as Music Plus. We drove over there, I think we pitched in and bought the album. Actually, he probably made me buy it as it was his car, his stereo and I was lucky to ride in the car. That sounds about right... we played that Vanilla Ice song over and over, exuding coolness. I can remember my brother flying up stunt road playing Tom Petty’s “Learning to Fly.” Just like with my dad, we knew every word and with the windows open, the sunroof off, we were in our own world. Coming back from the beach, it was awesome! Bobby Davis, he made some good mix-tapes. Pink Floyd, Dream

Academy, U2, we would play a Bobby Davis mixed tape till it died. I think it was a source of pride for Bobby. In retrospect, I think he probably got some of his musical acumen from his older brother Billy. However it worked out, a Davis mixed tape was as good as gold for cruising to the beach or to Mammoth. When it was my turn to drive, I jumped in head first. Brian Zacuto, Doug Yick...the older guys who knew so much about cars and stereos and I would buy all their old stereos systems. This is the age of bass. If you can’t hear me five blocks away, well, you just don’t exist. Cars were low, stereos were loud. I think I blew my first set of 10 inch subs and 12 inch subs. My neighbors hated when I came home late and I am certain to go deaf as I age, but it was the golden age of rap and rock. The drums hit hard and so did our stereos. As you get older, your ears mature, set aside the tinnitus, so you move away from absurdly loud to the “clean” sound. I can remember Brian and I driving around in one of his many lowered Thunderbirds, must have been 1993. He is blasting Van Halen and his system was so clean. The car was lowered just right and we were just driving around. Every right turn he would make he would kick the backend around. Brian could set up a car real nice and drive it pretty good too. I was lucky to buy all his and Doug’s old stuff. They changed stereo systems like most people change underwear. Who knows how they afforded it but, they worked for it and those systems were awesome. I think I have a song for almost every friend. My dad, definitely Chuck Berry. My Mom, Kenny Rogers. Brian was Van Halen and Too Short. Lance was a myriad of 80s music. Bobby Davis, same as Lance. Kelly Burke, driving to the beach countless times, it was either Sublime or Henry Rollins. A song, a car and a designation. The feeling of the wind on my face. In the car with someone I cherish and the music. I have music for so many memories in my life. Elan and his Bob Marley...man the memories. When I had my 1992 Z28, I put a pretty good system in it. All used stuff from Brian and Doug. God knows they probably overcharged me, but, it sounded good and I think the work was decent. Phil Collins, “In the air tonight,” that drum solo, man in that car it was incredible. The music of life... in a car. It is so amazing how cars play such a huge role in our lives. We spend so much time in them, by ourselves, with others. Sometimes sitting in traffic, other times zooming around. I sit here and think of my many friends I have shared time with in cars. Seems as a teenager all you are is...in your car. My friend who passed away at a young age, his song was by Tupac, “I get around.” We had a lot of fun. There was kid named Jared in high school. I didn't know him that well, but he would take a whole bunch of us to surf. He drove some type of Pontiac two-door. He would play some band that I could not stand, the name escapes me for now, but every time we surfed, all the way down Topanga Canyon to PCH, the same damn band. Funny the things you remember. With Will, it was Coldplay. Going to mountain bike or just running around, the same two Coldplay songs over and over. Fun stuff. My wife, there are so many songs for her. Too many to list, but all capture a moment in time, all of which are special. As a father of two kids now, I wonder what songs we will share as a family and as a father to a daughter(s). I now get to make music with my kids. This is going to be so much fun. This Thursday is “Father/Daughter Night” at Scarlett’s pre-school. She is so excited. I’ll have to pick up some flowers for her and pick out a special song to play on the way there. Maybe I should put together a special playlist, just like Bobby Davis would do with his mix-tapes. Cars, music and memories, how can we go wrong. Get out there, turn the music up, roll down the windows and play your favorite songs on your favorite roads, life is too short not to. Make those playlist and spend time with the ones you love. Life is a symphony indeed. I do love my family and friends. They make my life wonderful. 5

3rd Annual PH Show & Shine ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY JAMES STANLEY

I attended the original show three years ago and I was impressed right from the start. It was a small show right down the street from my house at a beach that is little used. This beach has a beautiful pier and it's the same beautiful Pacific Ocean and bright blue skies that you would find in crowded Malibu and Santa Monica just a little ways south, or Posh and pretentious Santa Barbara to the North. It's quiet, it's serene, it's ripe for a car show, and I think the local US Navy Seabees have the skill and drive to build a truly fantastic show. The second annual show was even better than the first. I decided to enter my car into the show and I spent the entire day beforehand detailing it for the show and arrived about 15 minutes before the advertised load-in time. To my surprise, the beach parking lot was already beyond max capacity. There wasn't a single spot open! I drove over the adjoining parking lot and paid the 8

one-hour parking fee. I didn't realize that I would be there for so much longer than an hour! The show didn't officially start for another hour by this point, but everyone was in place and the vendor booths open and the spectators were already enjoying themselves. One thing that I found most interesting was that the styles of cars varied from parking spot to parking spot. In one space, you can see a beautiful classic Chevy, the type you would expect to see at a car show. Beautiful paint, shiny chrome, and white leather interior that looks spotless. The next space over you would see an early 2000's Honda Civic Si, slammed on coil-over suspension, the steering wheel on the wrong side, and the steering wheel in the back seat (because race car). After that, a number of classic American land-yacht's on small, chrome wire wheels with chrome suspension, and air tanks painted to match the car in the trunk to control the hydraulic suspension. Big trucks, choppers, muscle, sport bikes, low-rider bicycles, modern muscles, it was all there. I absolutely love this setup. It's not something I see very often, and I attend dozens of shows every year. Each is usually brand, model, or style centric. Now that I think of it, I can't think of any major shows that are open

to anything and everything. I was also surprised to see that all of the show participants would walk around and appreciate the other styles of vehicle that were on display. The Caliber of the vehicles that were on display were topnotch as well. Flawless paint, blemish-free chrome, proper engine builds, and even the "under construction" category vehicles were better than many complete vehicles I've seen at other shows. This year's show was going to be even bigger and better, so I knew that I had to get my work in on this great show. With a little arm twisting, I was able to get Vista Ford Lincoln of Oxnard in as the title sponsor. Being a U.S. Navy Veteran, I found this show to be particularly important to support. It's put on by the First Class Petty Officers Association of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Three, or FCPOA of NMCB3 if you understand military alphabet soup. For those that are unfamiliar with what all that means, this is the group of E-6 Ranked members of a command at Port Hueneme base that is part of the construction wing of the U.S. Navy. An over simplified explanation of all the amazing and hard work these guys and gals do, but it should get as good as expected, this year's show was even bigger than the previous year's.

10

Partnering with the city of Port Hueneme allowed them to have 2 separate parking lots closed off for the show as well as the entire street leading up to the two lots. The show is really starting to create a name for itself which is evident by the large crowd of participants and spectators that attended. Row after row of unique vehicles that you don't see every day and an amazing mix found nowhere else. I can't stress enough the caliber of many of these vehicles. I'm not really a fan of the super-wild bright yellow dub Chevy Avalanche with matching yellow interior with lambo-doors, but I have to give credit when credit is due, because the quality of the modifications and paint was impeccable. Under the host's tent, was a lineup of some unique and custom raffle prizes including custom made wooden lounge chairs, hand crafted wooden American flags, and several other prizes all hand-made by and donated by the Seabees of NMCB3. I personally got an 'arm's length' worth of raffle tickets and spread them out among a few of the crafted prizes, but I left empty handed. At least I know that my money went to a good cause, and there's always next year. For those participants that came to compete, in true Seabee style, the trophies were custom engraved paddles adorned with the Seabee challenge coins, each taking more than 3 hours to make, and all highly sought after by competitors. Tall sparkly plastic trophies are cool and nice to get, but these paddles are something that will hang on someone's wall for years, and not get forgotten over the years in some box in the attic. I hope that one day, I'll have something good enough to bring to the show that would merit taking one of these paddles home to hang on my wall. Thank you to all members of NMCB3 for being such amazing and gracious show hosts, and on behalf of all those that attended and participated, we look forward to many more successful years of this event.

Clutch Time for the Clutch Pedal Fewer than 10% of all cars and light trucks sold in the U.S. last year were equipped with a traditional manual transmission with a clutch pedal. This is despite the rising fuel costs and the fact that a manual transmission provides better fuel economy. Clutchless manual transmissions originated in European vehicles a few years back. They are making their appearances in the United States in Ford Fiesta and Focus models. Using the “power-shift feature” however, has provoked 15 year old Taylor Halby learning to drive her some complaints from new father’s Suzuki Samari, 5-speed manual buyers. The technology and feel are new to consumers. Ford has actually launched a campaign to educate buyers on the clutchless manual transmission. Porsche reports that 60% of their new cars sold are equipped with clutchless manual transmissions. Volkswagen is also currently offering vehicles with a clutchless manual transmission. Other factors contributing to the demise of the clutch pedal are automatic transmissions that can be used in a ‘full manual mode’. On vehicles equipped with this feature, the driver can choose whether to shift gears or not. Ford has dropped the option of a manual transmission in the F150 trucks, since the demand in recent years became so low. Learning the stick shift was a rite of passage for many teenagers for years. Car collectors and enthusiasts are heartbroken at the demise of the stick. “Car and Driver” magazine has actually launched a campaign to “Save the Manuals.” Many believe that declining interest in truly driving a car will end up consigning classic automobiles to museums and show displays. Perhaps the next generation of mechanics won’t know what a “clutch job” is! 13

The 36th Annual Classic Chevy Show is an event not to miss! This show, which is open to all makes and models, not only brings a variety classic and hot rods, but late model street cars as well. If you are unfamiliar with the Classic Chevy Club of SoCal, there might not be a more energetic and passionate group of car owners out there. The Club has chosen Rancho San Antonio Boys Town not only as their location, but the beneficiary of the show. Proceeds from the show will be donated to Rancho, which helps to provide underprivileged youth a safe home and learning environment to help secure their futures. Over the last dozen years, the Club has donated over $110,000.00 to Rancho. The boys at Rancho will also be present to assist with the show and provide an amazing bar-b-que. This show is one of the largest car shows in the valley and also one of the longest running. According to Crazy Al aka Big Al, this is in fact the largest show around! What many people don't know is that this show is open to all makes and models. Everyone is welcome to the show and the more the merrier. Beyond having a great show, it is a huge goal of the Chevy Club to generate as much revenue as possible for Rancho. The club has a strong connection with Rancho and Brother John who operates Rancho and they do their best to raise the bar each year and put on the best show possible. If you do not have a car to enter into the show that is also ok, the club welcomes you to come by and enjoy the show, bid on auction items and have a wonderful meal. The show is on Sunday May 6th and you can see the flyer on the next page. See you there! For More Info: www.classicchevysofsocal.com

2018 Geneva Motor Show ARTICLE BY STEVE ELLIS

They say Christmas only comes once a year. That is fortunately not true When you’re an automotive enthusiast, with new cars appearing throughout the year at different car shows, it’s like we are given gifts all year long, and there were a lot of things to unwrap at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. While there are several cars and displays throughout the motor show, I decided that I would pick my personal favorites, and share them with you all. You may want to grab a fresh cup of coffee, kick your shoes off, and snuggle in, these are [in my opinion] the best cars from the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. First, I’m just going to get this out the way…. THE TOYOTA SUPRA IS BACK…. kind of. I say kind of, as we were only shown ANOTHER concept. Toyota teased with a shadowy silhouette, of a fastback car and a massive GT spoiler prior to the Geneva Motor Show. After the long, and dull presentation from the Toyota executive, the cover came off the Gazoo Racing Supra concept. To say I was a bit upset and disappointed would be an understatement. The first announcement of the Japanese company reviving one of their most iconic sports cars has been talked about for roughly ten years. So, to see just another concept was a bit like being told dinner is ready, rushing to the kitchen, only to find out that the cooking hasn’t even started yet. It has been reported that the next Supra will be powered by a BMW power plant, likely the B58, an inline 6-cylinder twin turbocharged engine. It has also been said that there may be a 4-cylinder turbo charged engine, both which will come with an automatic transmission. Toyota engineer Tetsuya Tada, in an interview with Autoblog, said the desire for a manual transmission in the next generation Supra is not there, which is very sad to hear. Hopefully sometime this year we will see an actual production ready car from Toyota, which will share powertrains with the new BMW Z4 roadster. If you subscribe to this magazine, which you should because it is very good, then you may have read my article on the Ferrari 488 Pista. The next generation from the Italian powerhouse was proudly the center of attention. Being lighter, faster, and aggressively styled, the 488 Pista will for sure engrave

2019 Lamborghini Huracan Performante Spyder

16

its place among the track focused street cars from the Italian manufacture. The Ferrari 488 Pista is a lot more than just a few upgrades when compared to the 488 GTB. Packing 711bhp, a nose design called the “S-Duct”, an entire reworking of the cars aerodynamics, including relocation of the intakes for the 3.8L twin turbo V-8 engine, carbon fiber from top to literally bottom, in the form of a carbon fiber wheel option, and the upgraded Side-Slip Control system, in the words of Wu-Tang, the 488 won’t be nothing to $%&# with! When the Bugatti Veyron stepped on the scene, the ground shook under its 253mph propelling W-16, quad-turbocharged, 8-liter, 1,001 horsepower nuclear reactor. Setting the bar of top speed faster than damn near the space shuttle. Recently the successor to the Veyron, the Chiron, bowed and as deliveries are still rolling out, Bugatti has announced the Bugatti Chiron Sport. There is a saying, “What do you get someone who has everything”, well it could also be said, how do you make the most highly engineered car even better? For starters both the base Chiron and the Chiron Sport pack 1,479 horsepower, but the Chiron Sport drops 40 pounds over the beefy base model with the use of more carbon fiber, lighter wheels, and a carbon fiber windshield wiper (for the record I giggled when I read that). There are upgraded adaptive dampers which provide 10% more stiffness, as well as the new Handling mode that tightens up the steering when activated. Along with the upgrades for the Chiron Sport comes a new torque vectoring system at the rear helping navigate the sumo like hyper car around corners. The base Chiron you could say, is Bruce Wayne, where as the Sport properly rocks his alter ego. With new styling cues from a redesigned exhaust setup, race like “16” on the center grill, the Bugatti Chiron Sport has the price tag that only a real-life Bruce Wayne can put down. Sitting at a hot $3.26 million dollars you’ll hum the dark knight’s theme all the way to the dealership. For those of you patiently awaiting summer, and looking for a drop-top coupe, with a lot of umph under the rear bonnet, then the Lamborghini Huracan Performante Spyder should be at the top of your list. Besides loosing the

Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept

17

roof, nothing much has changed between the Huracan Performante and the Spyder. Both are powered by the same 5.2 liter naturally aspirated V10, both have a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, and are all-wheel drive. The o-62mph is 3.1 seconds compared to the coupe’s 2.9 second time, and will rocket all the way up to 202 mph. I’d imagine doing 202mph with the top down, would be the closest thing to flying a F18 Hornet with the canopy open. With convertible tops comes convertible weight, and the Huracan Performante Spyder gains 272 pounds, but is still 77 pounds lighter than the base Huracan Spyder. The ALA active aero system is also found on the Spyder, meaning that the Huracan Performante Spyder should lap the Nürburgring close to the hardtops jaw dropping 6:52 lap time. It is a RUF world out there, and what better way to navigate it than in a RUF interpretation of a supercar. Awhile back RUF announced that they were going to be creating their own car, the 2017 RUF CTR. This car was not based off a Porsche 911, which they are so famed for, but an entirely brand-new chassis. The RUF SCR is another take on their vision of performance. With a 4.0L flat 6-cylinder engine coughing out 510hp and 347 lb-ft of torque, a 6-speed manual transmission, a carbon fiber monocoque with an integrated roll cage for rigidity, which keeps the weight down to 2,755 pounds, this car is

18

built for the pure business of speed. Rowing through all six gears will put you at 199mph, and to bring you back to legal speeds are carbon ceramic brakes held by 6 pistons calipers in the front, and 4 piston calipers in the rear. There is no doubt that the RUF SCR will have you grinning from ear to ear. Though with only 15 planned to be built, that grin might become slightly smaller when you notice the $800,000 price tag attached to this boutique interpretation by one of Germany’s most famed tuners. Of all the cars that caught my attention at the Geneva Motor show this year, the one that left me in awe was none other than the Rimac C_Two. I am a huge sci-fi buff, I will literally drop everything and watch 5th Element every time it’s on TV, so to see a car that is as futuristic and space-age as this, I became an instant fan. If you were to ask me, what the modern-day equivalent is to a Jetson’s flying car, it would be this car, as it does everything and more, expect fly. Well, I guess that depends on what your definition of flying is, because with 1,914 horsepower…. yes, I said that correctly, I’ll even spell it out. The Rimac C_Two makes one thousand nine hundred and fourteen horsepower, and 1,696 lb-ft of torque. If you were like me, in your head, or out loud you probably said, “Sweet Mother of God”, or maybe dropped a slight curse word

under your breath, either would be acceptable when you’re talking about that much power, and then you find out that it is 100% an electric car. Made by a small company from Croatia, Rimac that has worked with several manufactures such as Aston Martin, Koenigsegg, Jaguar/Land Rover, and Renault. Their previous creation, the Concept One, produced 1,224 horsepower, and 1,180 lb-ft of torque, which lead the C_Two to evolve into an even more refined monster. With all that power, the Rimac C_Two gets you from 0-62 miles per hour in a brain melting, Star Trek warp speed like 1.85 seconds, and will continue to run to 258 miles per hour. The run from 0-186 miles per hours will happen in just 11.8 seconds. Brembo CCMR carbon ceramic brake disc are gripped by 6 piston caliper front AND rear to slow you down, along with active aero set up which includes front and rear diffusers, a bonnet turning vane, several underbody inlets and outlets, as well as a rear wing that doubles as an air brake. The range for this Hyper car is a surprising 403 miles, and will charge to 80% in less than half an hour when plugged into a 250kW fast charge network. Following the tradition of all hyper car construction the C_Two has a carbon fiber monocoque, bonded carbon roof, rear carbon subframe with crash structures made of more carbon and aluminum, and an integrated battery pack. Underneath is a double

wishbone suspension with electronically controlled dampers. Each wheel is powered by its own individual electric motor, capable of all wheel drive, and uses a torque vectoring system. The mighty electric power is captured by a pair of independent single-speed gearboxes at the front, and a two-speed carbon clutched gearbox at the rear. With all the equipment onboard that comes with an electric car, the Rimac C_Two is by no means a ballerina, and very hefty at 4,300 pounds. The weight is distributed 48% in the front, and 52% at the rear. Inside is a network of systems that aid in conquering this car. Three large touch screens, a full ADAS system (Advanced Driver Assistance system), 8 cameras, Lidar, 6 radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, the tech in the Rimac C_Two rivals that of the international space station. Being a resident of Los Angeles, I hope that the trend of seeing some of the most rarest cars in person will continue, and lead me to seeing one of these in the near future. With more shows to come in this still infant year, there will be a lot to see.

2018 CLASSIC AUTO SHOW ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY KEN LATKA

Whether you’re a collector, you’re working on a project car, or you simply share a passion for classic vehicles, the Classic Auto Show (CAS) has something for everyone. The 2018 CAS was held March 2-4 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. This year’s Grand Marshall was renowned custom car builder Steve Moal of Moal Coachbuilders based in Oakland, California. With more than 1,000 vehicles on display, the Classic Auto Show has become the largest 3-day indoor classic car show in the United States. Some of the vehicles included rarely seen, museum quality classics displayed on the Grand Boulevard. This is an area right down the center of the show floor where millions of dollars’ worth of Concours grade classics ran the entire length of the Convention Center’s South Hall. There were also celebrity builds, as well as hundreds of classics from some of the most respected car clubs in the Los Angeles area. Whether it was American muscle, hot rods, low riders, vintage off-road vehicles or foreign marks like Alpha Romeo, Jaguar, McLaren, Porsche and others, this show had it all. There were even some real deal movie cars, like Eleanor from “Gone in 60 Seconds”, that was on display courtesy of Cinema Vehicles right in the center of the Television Motion Picture Car Club’s display. While the cars are the stars, the Classic Auto Show also attracts countless celebrities from the world of automotive television. Attendees got to see Chip Foose from Overhaulin’; Dave Kindig and Kevin Schiele from Bitchin Rides; Wayne Carini from Chasing Classic Cars; Mike Brewer and Ant Anstead from Wheeler Dealers; Stacey David from Gearz; Wrestler, actor and car guy Bill Goldberg; Donald Osbourne from Jay Leno’s Garage; Dennis Gage from My Classic Car; Kevin Mack and Horny Mike from Count’s Kustoms; Jeff Allen from “The Car Chasers”; Ralph Holguin from RMD Garage, drag racing legend Don “The Snake” Prudhomme and many more. The show also featured several women who have made significant contributions to the automotive industry. Jody DeVere moderated a special “Women ‘n Wheels” panel, featuring: Legendary Race Car Driver Lyn St. James; Bogi Lateiner and Rachel DeBarros from All Girls Garage; Kristin Cline from Grease Girl; Cecile Bukmeier (the first female instructor at NAIT); Elana Scherr (Editor of Roadkill.com) and Jessi Combs from Overhaulin’. There was an Auto Detailing Studio, where you could learn how to detail your car from the inside out. A Restoration Station that offered enthusiasts the opportunity to hear from the experts, share their own stories and get valuable advice, in addition to learning the latest real world techniques to get your build up and running. There were pin-striping demonstrations with master pin-stripers Mike Donner and Johnny Martinez, where attendees could try their own hand at striping with the brushes and paints provided. In the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow display, local high school teams competed to see which school was the fastest engine builder in Los Angeles. They tore down and rebuilt identically prepared Chevrolet small block V-8’s in record time. There was even a Junior Hot Rodders of Tomorrow booth where children 5 years of age and up could have hands on experience learning how to disassemble and reassemble 5 HP Briggs & Stratton engines. In just two short years, the Classic Auto Show has become one of the premiere car shows in the United States. The show returns to the Convention Center next year and the organizers are planning even more additions to an already outstanding event. So mark your calendars for the Classic Auto Show March 23-24, 2019 and I hope to see you there.

2018 CLASSIC AUTO SHOW ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY TOMMY HUTH

In 2017, we saw the debut of The Classic Auto Show on the last weekend of January at the Los Angeles Convention Center. This year, 2018, the show moved a month later, to March 2-4. It doubled in size by adding another display hall and expert panel discussions with their focus on restoration and auto detailing. With over 1000 classics on display, this Classic Auto Show is the largest indoor Classic car show in the United States. Here are some of the Special collector cars that were placed on the the “Grand Boulevard: 1938 Hispano Suiza Dubonnet, 1930 Duesenberg Murphy, 1938 Bentley 4.25 Special Boattail Speeder, 1952 Siata 208 CS Spider Corsa, 1959 Nash Metropolitan Coupe, 1924 FORD Custom, 1965 Shelby 427 s/c Cobra, 1932 Ford Roadster Pick up, 1935 Morgan F2 3 wheeled Cyclecar, 1936 Packard 120 Le Baron Convertible, and a 1940 Mercury Custom among many other great cars. I took three cameras to photograph the classics; one with a fisheye lens. This lens gives me a picture that shows the largeness of the display hall plus gives me the opportunity to get in close to the subject car and show the car's personality. Check them out. See if you agree; you be the judge. Needless to say, if you love rolling art and you like classic cars, this show will not disappoint. Put this show on your must see list. Enjoy, Tommy

LAVAGGIO

ARTICLE BY DUSTIN TROYAN | PHOTOS BY SCOTT MARTIN

When I first heard of Lavaggio, I didn’t believe what I was told. “The most amazing detailing facility ever built!” that was the quote. Years ago, I had an auto detailing business and all of us know, auto detailing is a bay or a trailer. So, when I heard about Lavaggio, I just wrote it off. Over the next couple of months, I kept hearing about Lavaggio and it always followed with “you must go see it, you will not believe it.” So, curiosity got the best of me and I headed over. Exiting the 101 fwy at Reyes Adobe, I was told I could not miss it, “turn right off the freeway and make the first right onto Canwood St. and you will see it on your left.” So off the freeway I went, turned right and right onto Canwood Street. But, something must be wrong. All I see is a spa or a medical building, everything else is residential. There is no detail center around here? So, I drove back and forth a few times and I kept seeing the Lavaggio waterfall and signage by the street, but where was the facility? All I see is this stunning building that is reminiscent of Tuscan villa. So, I turned into the medical building or villa or whatever it was and my jaw dropped, IT WAS LAVAGGIO! A little intimidated, I pulled into the parking lot. I didn’t understand, this was the detailing facility? I walked up the marble steps and entered automotive nirvana. Allow me to assure you with 100% certainty; there is no other detail facility on the planet like Lavaggio. Everything I was told was true, and more. Lavaggio is an entirely new concept in auto detailing. It is not a bay or a body shop, it is quite possibly the nicest automotive venue that has ever been created. Lavaggio is dedicated to one simple principle: Exceeding your expectations. To fully understand Lavaggio, you must visit. No expense has been spared in providing your vehicle and yourself with the finest experience possible. So what makes Lavaggio so special? It begins when you pull onto the property. As you pull in the lull of waterfalls immediately puts you at ease. As you pull up, Lavaggio’s service advisor, Gabriel greets you with a friendly smile and an extremely high level of expertise. Once you have agreed upon a service, you enter Lavaggio’s state-of-theart building. The concierge greets you, not unlike a five star hotel. She asks if you are “staying” or if you would like to be “transported” back to your home or office. Now here is where it starts to get very interesting. Included in the price of every service is a meal made to order and a courtesy shuttle. Do you need me to repeat that? You pull up to get your vehicle washed or detailed and you have your choice of a freshly made meal and/or a ride back to the office! NO EXTRA CHARGE! If it is the case that you decide you are going to stay at Lavaggio while your vehicle is being cleaned, you have your choice of relaxing on their stunning patio, watching the flat-screen TV inside, using one of three iMacs or your own wireless laptop or device. And, this is only a small portion of the facility! If it is the case that you have work to be done or want a little more privacy, just head upstairs and there is a desk and a private sitting area as well as offices that are available to you. At no extra charge! Ok, ok, sounds great, but if I am getting a ride home and a return pick up to get my vehicle and a complimentary meal, this place must cost a fortune right? WRONG! That is the most amazing part of the Lavaggio experience; it is priced at a level that anyone can afford! In fact, it is priced better than most other quality detail shops and mobile detailers. Throw in the lunch, amenities and pampering, it is a no-brainer. Back to exceeding expectations, the base service is the Lavaggio Signature Wash. Now, what you have to understand here is that their wash is everybody else’s mini-detail or detail. That signature wash which is expertly executed by detailers, is fully customized to each vehicle, meaning that it is not a conveyor or a line, it is two detail professionals using mineral free water (R-O water) in a dedicated wash bay utilizing the finest products available. After the car is washed, it is pulled into the detail bay. Oh, the detail bay. Again, I assure you with 100% certainty that you have never seen such a detail bay or work area (see next page). Your vehicle is pulled into the bay and the detailers go to work on the inside and exterior of the vehicle. Your floor mats are put through a state-of-the-art washing and sanitizing machine. Your steering wheel, shifter and door handles are sanitized. From your wheels to your windows to your gas door, the attention to detail on the Signature Wash far exceeds the norm. To ensure the paint looks great, the detailers finish the vehicle with a liberal

26

portion of detail spray. Yes, this is the wash! Upon completion, your vehicle is inspected three times. THREE TIMES! This ensures that Lavaggio lives up to its promise: Exceeding your expectations. If this is just the wash, image the detail! Also worth noting are the big, sound proof bay windows, which are incorporated into the structure. Every step of the way you can observe the skilled technicians perfecting your vehicle! Nothing is hidden and the entire process is there for you to see. The entire approach at Lavaggio is to ensure that you are 100% comfortable with every aspect of your experience and the services being rendered on your vehicle. When I tell you that you have to experience Lavaggio, you really must. I believe it actually takes a few visits to really understand the scope of what Lavaggio has to offer and the vision that has been recognized. Lavaggio is truly redefining auto detailing. When one publishes a magazine, space is a precious commodity. I figured I would dedicate three pages to Lavaggio, but I could not tell the whole Lavaggio story in just three pages. I could actually dedicate a whole magazine to really elaborate on the level of detail at Lavaggio, but if you are a car guy like me, check out this one of a kind detail bay. To detail properly, you must have an environment, which is conducive to detailing. Environmental factors like temperature, wind, fallout (overspray,

27

dirt/dust in the air, other pollutants) all play a major role in the preparation, application and execution of detailing. At Lavaggio, the detail bay was designed to guarantee that Lavaggio had the perfect environment. From the climate controlled bay to the “clean room” air treatment system to remove dust and pollutants in the air, to the natural lighting, and the finest and most modern equipment, Lavaggio is truly one of a kind. The detail team at Lavaggio has been trained, retrained, trained again, some more training and they are always training. Enough is never enough and to stay sharp, industry experts are in constant contact and are being flown in from all over the United States to ensure the Lavaggio team is current on all new techniques, products and information. At Lavaggio, detailing is more than detailing, it is keeping you and your family healthy! Lavaggio has researched and found that there is a direct relationship between time spent in a car and illness. This is often attributed to contaminants in your vehicle. Research shows that if you eat in your vehicle, have kids or animals, your vehicle can be as dirty if not dirtier than your toilet. It’s true, Google it! To combat this, Lavaggio has taken a “health approach” and again, invested in training and equipment to kill germs and bacteria in your vehicle. The purpose of this “Health Approach” was simply that the Lavaggio management felt it was their responsibility to keep their guests and the guest’s families healthy. The lift in the corner. Yup, you go it, concors detailing. There was such a high demand from guests that wanted more than just the top and inside of their vehicles done, that Lavaggio decided to put in a lift with extra-low ramps (for the sports cars owners out there). Lavaggio offers concors detailing and under-carriage detailing. They offered a story about a set of wheels that they were preparing for a guest. The wheels were to be put on a vintage Ferrari that was to head up to Concorso Italiano. So Lavaggio went to work on the wire wheels and the vintage tires. Having completed the “Concours wheel and tire service”, what did Lavaggio do? They called in a local certified concours judge and had them inspected prior to delivery to the client. The vehicle took a trophy! What types of vehicles frequent Lavaggio? On any given day, you will see a mom pull up in a SUV, or a Prius owner pulling in. The irony is that most people think that Lavaggio is only for “certain cars”, but truth be told, every type of car imaginable pulls in on a daily basis. I have been there when a boat pulled in, followed by a Carrera Gt, then a couple “soccer moms” in SUVs and then a Harley. Lavaggio was created to suit the needs of every type of vehicle owner and every type of vehicle. I have seen 4x4s covered in mud from a weekend in the desert to real 440 6-pack Cudas to Hondas, Toyotas, Kias and everything else under the sun. Lavaggio is such a value and an experience, once you visit, you have found a new home. Lavaggio has also reached out to the car community. From offering their facility to car clubs and charitable foundations, to holding private events at to

28

partnering with dealerships and manufacturers. Lavaggio has hosted guests like the Santa Barbara Porsche Club and parties and receptions from Hotchkis Suspensions, Lamborghini Aventador Launch parties with the Auto Gallery, Galpin Auto Sports Mustang drives, McLaren Beverly Hills test drives, Tesla test drives, and so on and so forth. Lavaggio is becoming a central hub for everything automotive. Back to the detailing. Lavaggio takes such great care of your vehicle and they take it so seriously, every vehicle is inspected three times by three different trained experts. The technicians wear white cloth gloves and lab coats. Upper management will even do “spot inspections” to ensure the highest level of work possible. And, within 48 hours, a follow up call is made to the guest to ensure that their experience was of the approval of the guest. At Lavaggio, the experience is in the details and they are in the detail business and trust me, it shows. Being very immersed in the automotive world, I have never come across such an organization and operation. Lavaggio has truly set a new bar that will be very hard to replicate if it is even possible. Again, I have to stress, you have to visit the location to fully understand what has been created. The Platinum Club at Lavaggio: Lavaggio has had such great demand for a “yearly program”, that they came up with a concept called the “Platinum Club.” The Platinum Club is a yearly program in which you enroll your vehicle. The program allows you to get your vehicle unlimited Signature Washes. Yes, that does mean every day. It entitles you to a meal with every visit, concierge services, local car service, use of the business centers and offices, invitations to private events and product launches. It also entitles you to (4) Ultimate Details, A Lease Return Detail & A New Car Detail (in the case that you trade in your vehicle), VIP treatment. You might ask if anyone gets their car washed everyday and the answer is “yes”, they do. The value of just the washes once a week is well over $3,000.00, not including the Ultimate Details, the meal with each visit, the New vehicle and Lease return details and all of the amenities. The true value of this programs is somewhere over the $5,000.00 mark. But in classic Lavaggio style, they have priced the Platinum Club starting at $2275.00 and even have payment options available to you. In essence, your vehicle is guaranteed to be clean and resale value or trade-in value is realized. I have personally enrolled vehicles and have to tell you that it is the finest experience ever. I would suggest joining to everyone. For more information on Lavaggio & the Platinum Club contact Dustin Troyan 818-584-3240 www.lavaggio.net

Lavaggio & Lamborghini ARTICLE AND PHOTOS DUSTIN TROYAN

Any reason to have fun, right?! I had walked into Lamborghini North Los Angeles and started chatting with the new General Manager of the store, Ron Giger. He and I look for any excuse to have fun with cars and friends. Ron is a passionate guy and when we decided to organize a friendly scenic drive with friends, well, the event filled in less than twenty-four hours. Starting at Lavaggio-the art of auto detailing in Agoura Hills, it was the perfect place to be. The attendees are all familiar with Lavaggio and the luxury and customer service that Lavaggio represents is always appreciated. As the cars started to roll in, it was clear that it was going to be a star studded line up. From limited edition Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Porsches, to the star of the show, a Jaguar XJ220. And yes, the owner drove the car for the entire drive! We left Lavaggio and cruised through the Santa Monica Mountains to Malibu. It was a lovely Saturday afternoon and the weather was perfect. The exotic cars on PCH, a warm winter day, it was quintessential California. As we toured the Santa Monica Mountains on the way back to Lamborghini North Los Angeles in Calabasas, we knew two things; One, it has been way too long; Two, we need to get together and drive with friends more regularly. When we arrived at Lamborghini North Los Angeles, there was a warm reception waiting for us. The event was catered by The Six Chow House located in Calabasas on Calabasas Road. The attendees had an absolutely marvelous time and are looking forward to the next event. Any reason to have fun...right?!

Spring is in the air so here are some cleaning tips to welcome in the season. Make a good first impression! Take your door mats and shake them, vacuum them, wash them or swat them with a broom. If you are really energetic, perk up those dusty walls using a sponge or brush with mild soap and water or a hand dish washing detergent. Don't forget the baseboards and outlets. Make sure the outlet covers are completely dry before replacing them. A sponge mop will make it easier to reach higher spots. Now that Spring is here, it's time to tend to those gutters! Throw on a pair of gloves and grab a garden hose. This is the perfect time of year to clean out all the debris that has accumulated in them over the winter months. Replace all your filters including water, air vent and range hood. Clean faucets and shower heads by combining equal parts vinegar and water into a plastic bag. Unscrew the shower heads, faucet aerators and sink sprayers and soak them in this solution for approximately an hour. Finish by rinsing them with warm water. The best refrigerator cleaner is a combination of salt and soda water.

Get ready for the sun by washing dirty windows; and get rid of the accumulation of dust and lint by cleaning out the dryer vent, as a clogged dryer vent could be a fire hazard. To remove the lint that gets stuck deeper inside the machine, use the crevice tool on your vacuum to suck up the debris. Your BBQ grill has likely accumulated dust over the months of non-use, so use a mild grill cleaner to get ready for yummy outdoor dinners. Dust areas you forgot about like lamps shades and drapes - a lint roller works wonders to remove that dust! Don't forget to test your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors to see if the batteries need to be changed. Finally, get your outdoor furniture ready to use in anticipation of those upcoming warm nights when you’ll want to sit outside. Adding a squirt of dish detergent to a bowl of warm water will give you a great cleaning solution to wipe down tables and chairs. The garden hose can be used to give it a final wash down. Cheers! You did it - now pop that cork!
