The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray The first production mid-engine Corvette

To many, it was a surprise when Chevrolet announced that the next generation of the Corvette was going to be mid-engine. People howled, and yelled, that this would ruin the legacy that is arguably America’s greatest sports car. Among the die-hard Corvette enthusiast, a mid-engine Corvette isn’t unfamiliar. Dating back to the 60’s, the first endeavor into a Chevrolet with the engine mounted behind the driver, came in the form of the CERV I, which was designed by Zora Arkus-Duntov. The CERV I was a prototype to test a higher level of performance, and used a fuel injected V8 producing 350 horsepower, numbers that fall short to the recently revealed C8 Corvette. Oh, how times have changed, and in my honest opinion, for the better! Chevrolet has stated that with the current generation of Corvette with the engine in a FR layout (Front-engine and rear-wheel drive), the platform had reached its limit, and in order to move forward in the future with the car, a complete redesign would be necessary. With the booming sound of a futuristic cargo plane, faint glimpses of an intoxicating red draped over a sharp, and dynamic silhouette, the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray ran to the stage during the world-wide unveiling and made fans out of the nonbelievers. In its 67th year of production, the eighth generation in the Chevrolet Corvette lineage can only be described as a milestone for the American manufacture. After a handful of one-off prototypes, the C8 will be a full production car for the company with its engine mounted very low, behind the driver. Though this model introduces a lot of new features, such as a two-inch nose lift, heated steering wheel, memory seats, and wireless device charging, there are several that are carried over from the previous generations. The body is still a plastic and composite material, there is ample storage in now the front, and in the rear for luggage and golf clubs, and the roof is removable and can be stored in the trunk. The 6.2-liter LT2 V8 is

essentially an LT1, as the bore and stroke remain the same. The subtle changes are required from the engine being mounted in the middle of the chassis. The engine now breaths from the rear, and the exhaust manifolds are stainless, instead of cast iron. The LT2 uses a dry sump oil lubrication system, with the reservoir mounted

on the front side of the engine. This allows the engine to sit very low, so low that the valve covers sit lower than the 20-inch rear wheels. When paired with the factory sport exhaust, the power plant puts out 495 horsepower, and 470 lb-ft of torque. The power is put through a Tremec eight speed dual clutch

transaxle that is a shift by wire. Another first for the sports car icon, as a manual transmission won’t be available for the infamous sports car. Since this transmission can shift faster than any human, a 2.8 0-60 time is said to be capable. Using the configuration, and losing the need of a transmission tunnel, the center is

completely enclosed, which increases the structural strength adding to the 50 percent gain in chassis rigidity of the C8 over the C7. Chevrolet has provided an ample amount of options to build the C8 of your dreams, providing twelve exterior color options, six interior color schemes, and three

different seats to hug you in the corners. The specific trim levels are 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT. The top of the line package comes in the FE4 that adds on to the Z51 Performance package with magnetorheological dampers. The 2020 C8 Corvette Stingray is scheduled to begin production later this year, and pricing

starts below $60,000 MSRP. The Chevrolet Corvette has always been the sports car for the everyday working man, and now that the Corvette has evolved into a mid-engine sports car, with exotic like styling, and performance, it just very well be the exotic car for the everyday person.

Gooding & Company

The worldwide pandemic has wrecked havoc on all aspects of the car world. Racing has slowly returned without fans and nearly every car show and other event has been cancelled for 2020. One of the biggest impacts to fans of car related events has been the cancellation of Monterey Car Week. Car aficionados annually travel from around the globe to attend the prestigious events held in and around Pebble Beach each August. All events held during Monterey Car Week have been postponed until 2021 with the exception of the car auctions which have moved to an online format. A few of the premier car auction houses that bring out the best of the best in desirable collector cars each year have decided to use this method to showcase their vehicles. Online auctions have become the best and only way to sell vehicles in the high-end collector’s market this year. One of the top tier car auction houses is Gooding & Company which is located in Santa Monica and just happens to be the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Gooding held a “Geared Online” auction this week which allowed bidding through the company’s website and through their mobile app. They offered a total of 77 lots which consisted of cars, trucks, a motorcycle and some auto parts and memorabilia. We especially wanted to see the 2003 Ferrari Enzo in a rare color combo of Argento Nürburgring over tan interior, a 1 of 58 2008 Spyker C8 Laviolette in Black Olive Green and a 1 of 55 US-Specification 1995 Ferrari F50 with an Argento Nürburgring exterior. Since the majority of the auction cars we have seen through the years usually get tucked away in a private collection far away, the chance of seeing any of the vehicles again is very rare. In addition to the three vehicles above we enjoyed seeing the black 1990 Mercedes-Benz 2.5-16 Evolution II, two-tone green 1938 Bugatti Type 57 Cabriolet, a Bianco (white) 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Long Nose and a 1 of 5 white 1971 Porsche 911 ST Rally car built for the 1971 East African Safari Rally. Gooding also offered some uncommon vehicles such as the red 1959 Porsche-Diesel Junior 108K tractor, a one-off dark blue 2002 Mercedes-Benz G500 Custom Pickup, a one-off Mercedes-Benz E 320 Pickup and a dark blue 1 of 5 VLF Force 1 V10 designed by Henrik Fisker. They offered a wide variety of rare and exclusive vehicles for this event. Gooding must be satisfied with the results from this new auction format. This allowed a far greater number of participants to be involved in the bidding process and this may signal a turning point in the way auction houses conduct their future business. The top five sales from this auction were: Ferrari 275 GTB Long Nose ($3.08M), Ferrari Enzo ($2.35M), Ferrari F50 ($2.13M), Ferrari F40 ($1.62M) and a Duesenberg Model J Town Car ($1.01M). As always, we appreciate the wonderful hospitality from the Gooding & Company team. Overall, the online auction was a success and we look forward to covering many future Gooding Auctions.

Tips

For Maintaining & Protecting Your Ferrari From the Mattioli Automotive Group

DETAILING In addition to keeping a car looking its best, consistent detailing is an important step in protecting a vehicle’s finish. Contaminants such as dirt, pollen, tree sap, and bird droppings can scratch and deteriorate painted surfaces if left over long periods. Given the value of a Ferrari, It is important to ensure that “best practices” are followed when performing a car wash; here are just a few from Mattioli Automotive Group’s (MAG) very own detailing specialists. • Use the proper products: Ensure that the soap and other cleaning products being used have been formulated specifically for automotive use. Excessively strong chemicals and detergents will not only strip the wax off but can also dull the finish on paint and trim. • All Towels are not equal: Microfiber towels offer low friction and can absorb more than seven times their weight in water, making them less abrasive and more effective than other towels. It is best to use a separate towel for each function (i.e..washing, drying, applying chemicals, etc). Also, towels should never be used if they are contaminated or have fallen on the ground; washing your towels often will help ensure that they are free of debris. • Two bucket Technique: To help prevent the re-introduction of dirt and contaminants It is best to employ the “two bucket technique” when washing your car. One bucket should contain the diluted soap and a second bucket should have clean water. After each pass with the soap, rinse contaminants off of the sponge in the clean water before re-introducing into the soap solution again. • Nooks and Crannies: Dirt and water can gather in the seams of the doors, trunk, and hood. It is important to clean and dry these areas thoroughly to prevent dripping onto clean surfaces. • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Water evaporates quickly in direct sunlight which can result in watermarks. Is your Ferrari in need of a thorough and professional cleaning? Feel free to reach out to one of the MAG’s four service centers to schedule a complete detailing service. PROTECTIVE FILM Stones, road debris, chemical stains, and UV damage are all potential dangers when exposing your prized Ferrari to the road and the elements. But owners can save themselves from headaches and costly refinishing bills simply by installing protective film over their immaculate finish. This nearly invisible film can be applied just to the most vulnerable surfaces or the entire vehicle depending on your needs and driving habits. Protect your Ferrari against road hazards and the harsh elements before it's too late. The Mattioli Automotive Group contracts several of the top protective film installers to perform the service in our facility and can guarantee timely turnaround and flawless results. To learn more about protective film options for your Ferrari, or to schedule an appointment please contact one of the MAG’s four service centers. CERAMIC COATING Ceramic Coating is another popular option for protecting paint and other vehicle finishes. When compared to protective film, it can be a more comprehensive and economical alternative. Ceramic coating is a special chemical compound that is applied to various vehicle finishes to form a permanent bond with the surface. The result is a 9H+ hard coating that repels water and offers protection from UV rays, chemicals, oxidation, and corrosion. It can be applied to paint for protection against light scratches, wheels to prevent the build-up of brake dust, and glass for increased visibility in wet weather. The MAG contracts several of the top ceramic coating specialists to perform the service in our facility and we can guarantee timely turnaround and flawless results. To learn more about ceramic coating, or to schedule an appointment please contact one of the MAG’s four service centers.

Keep your Ferrari ready for your next drive. SKID PLATES The most common dangers for Ferrari owners are steep driveways and parking curbs. Even with the optional lifter, which is available on newer models, there are still some obstacles that are too big to maneuver over unscathed. To add protection against marring the underside of the front bumper, many owners elect to install a skid plate. This sacrificial piece of durable plastic polymer is precision cut to fit precisely on to the underside of the front bumper. The result is a nearly invisible layer of protection against costly paint and autobody repairs. To learn more about skid plates for your Ferrari, or to schedule an appointment please contact one of the MAG’s four service centers. Each MAG location stocks an extensive inventory of skid plates for various models and can complete the installation in a matter of hours. BATTERY MAINTINENCE The phrase “if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it” has never been more accurate than with regards to automotive batteries. When a battery is in a discharged state for an extended period of time the lead sulfate crystals inside the battery begin to increase in size. The bigger the crystals get, the harder they are to dissolve which ultimately blocks the chemical reaction that allows the battery to charge, and eventually leads to battery failure. For this reason, Genuine Ferrari offers Battery Re-conditioners which are designed to maintain a battery’s charge and combat the growth of sulfate crystals. A Battery Re-conditioner should be utilized any time a vehicle is parked for long periods of time. This is especially vital for new vehicles which contain more electrical components that put a drain the battery. For specific questions regarding the use of the Ferrari Battery Re-conditioners or to order one for your vehicle, feel free to reach out to one of Mattioli Automotive Group’s four service centers. "STICKY INTERIOR TRIM" Over time, environmental factors and harsh chemicals can take a toll on the interior components of a mature Ferrari resulting in sticky buttons, controls, and trim pieces. The only remedies to this condition are to replace the deteriorated components or have them re-finished. Either way, the process is very involved. Thankfully, the Mattioli Automotive Group’s service centers are very experienced with this issue and can help advise owners of their options when restoring their interior to like-new condition. If your Ferrari is in need of interior trim restoration, we invite you to reach out to one of MAG’s four service centers to learn more or schedule a service appointment.

Supercar Sunday

Article by Dustin Troyan Photos by Steve Geldman | @ImagePhotoMotorsports

The Supercar Sunday British Marque Day was a huge success. It was the last Supercar Sunday event prior to the weekly car show having to go on “hiatus” due to the Corona Virus Pandemic. As many of you know, Supercar Sunday began in the El Camino Shopping Center almost twenty years ago at the Village Coffee Roaster coffee shop. As the event grew overtime, it became one of the preeminent weekly car shows in the United States if not the world. This was also before social media was driving event participation and event coverage. The event was, is and always will be something special and we can’t wait to resume the event. The British Marque day brought British Cars of all types to Pierce College in Woodland Hills. The event Sponsored by KeyesCars.com once again kept to its reputation of offering the most amazing cars and diversity of any event around. Here are just a few examples of the British Cars in attendance. For more information: www.supercarsunday.com

Automotive Touchup The Simple DIY Solution for Paint Repair

ARTICLE BY | PHOTOS BY McCullough

No driver is immune to the perils of chips, nicks or scratches to their vehicle’s paint. Rocks fly up from off the highway, other drivers open their car doors and hit the car beside them or teenagers drive their parents’ car without their permission only to bump something. The list goes on and on. As we get out the Corvettes, BMWs, Porsches, Lamborghinis or other toys from storage, we may notice the chips, dings or scratches more than we did when we put them away. Few drivers want to slow down long enough to take their car to a professional body shop or spend top-dollar to fix minor paint chips or scratches; they would rather be out enjoying their vehicle. Few aspects of car repair are simple, quick or convenient. Fixing the vehicle’s paint, however, can be all three with the use of AutomotiveTouchup paint. From paint pens and bottles to aerosol spray cans and ready-to-spray products in pints, quarts and gallons, AutomotiveTouchup is the go-to source for any type of paint repair. The best part? With a database of more than 60,000 OEM colors, including colors going back to the muscle car era, the company produces each paint product individually in their New Orleansbased facility. This process guarantees that each color is specially formulated for each customer, rather than an off-the-shelf, pre-mixed standard color. AutomotiveTouchup’s easy to navigate website explains how to locate the paint code as well as how to order the paint. Just enter the vehicle’s year, make and model and every paint code for that specific vehicle will appear on a list. Find the paint code printed inside your specific car and match it to the code on the website. It’s that easy. To make the process even easier, the company’s website is designed as a one-stop-shop with a range of related products and supplies specifically designed to use with the paint in order to fix any paint problem. Simply add the nitrile gloves, sandpaper, sanding block, prep solvent, rubbing compound, protective eyewear, dust masks or any other equipment needed to fix the particular paint problem to the online cart. Feel safe knowing that the color match will be precise and the repair can be performed at a fraction of the cost at the driver’s convenience. Everything arrives in one box, eliminating the need to make numerous trips to the auto parts store. “We’ve had customers tell us that professional body shops wanted to charge them anywhere from $500 or more for basic paint repairs, but then they found our products and spent less than $100. At AutomotiveTouchup, our goal is to provide paint that blends seamlessly into the original paint while removing the hassle by making it convenient to do it yourself,” said AutomotiveTouchup General Manager Paul Fernandez. “We’re dedicated to making the process easy, so we have instructional videos on our website, and we make ourselves available to our customers should they have any questions.” The company recommends using the products in a well-ventilated area within the temperature range of 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Test the paint color on the enclosed test card prior to applying to the vehicle. Use prep solvent to remove wax or debris from the repair area and let it dry before applying the sandable primer to the vehicle. Some repairs will need to have the primer sanded down and reapplied, but most small fixes do not require any sanding. Once the primer has dried, the paint color can be applied. Customers should make sure each layer is dry before adding another layer. Once the paint is dry, use glossy clear coat to achieve a good match and protect the base coat. Paint bottles and pens are best suited for the small nicks and chips, and the project can be completed in just a few hours. Aerosol spray cans work best on scratches or medium size projects such as mirrors or bumpers. The ready-to-spray applications can repair larger areas such as full body panels and are also great for complete restorations. Spray guns are required for ready-tospray applications and can be purchased directly through the website. AutomotiveTouchup paint has also been successfully used to paint engine covers, matching brake calipers, model cars, bicycles and many other applications. Take the time in advance to fix any paint issues so the vehicle is ready to drive on the next beautiful day filled with sunshine or to the next Super Car Sunday Show. California Dreamin' Cars & Couples

ARTICLE BY DOUG CAMPBELL

First some background. My wife Marissa and I live in Newport Beach and have been there for four years now. We started dating in 2012 and were married in August of 2015. I have a son who is 15 years old from my prior marriage and we really enjoy our time with him. As far as cars go, our one “special” car is a Cobra Daytona Coupe built by Superformance that I ordered 13 years ago. I call it the most abused Daytona on the planet as it has about 53,000 miles on it now with 2,000 of those on the track. The car has recently changed hands from me to Marissa as she has fallen in love with the car and eventually would like to do some track time with it. I am currently having the heads refreshed, swapping the aluminum flywheel for a steel one (better drivability), swapping out the single disc clutch for a twin disc unit, and changing out the Holley 750HP carburetor for a Holley Terminator EFI unit (again for better drivability). There are some other “surprises” she doesn’t yet know about that will personalize the car and make it more “hers.” I was in the corporate world up until a little over two years ago when I decided that job and world no longer served me. I retired and took some time off to do some much needed work on the Daytona. Marissa and I were on a cruise in wine country with the Orange County Cobra club and Lance Stander, the owner of Superformance and Hillbank Motor Sports, asked me what I was doing. When I told him I was retired, he asked me about coming to work for him. Funny how the universe works, as I had told Marissa when I retired that I wanted to do something with my passion for cars. I started working for Lance in June of 2016 and haven’t looked back… When I first met Marissa, she had just bought a new BMW M3 hard top convertible. I was impressed with her immediately as she had opted for all the right “go fast” options on the car. She definitely liked cars and driving fast which was a huge plus in my book. She also left her career of 25 years a few years ago. She was working in a very well-established restaurant and catering company with her mother and father. There were some unfortunate family circumstances that caused her to have to set some boundaries and eventually walk away from the business. As with my situation, the universe brought the right opportunity in for her as well. We were planning our wedding months after she left the restaurant and she went to try on dresses. That is when she realized the stress and emotional pain had caused her to gain some unwanted pounds. A friend reached out to her and coached her through a program that transformed her not only physically, but mentally, spiritually and emotionally as well. So many people were taking notice of her transformation that she started a new career coaching in health, wellness and nutrition. Fast forward to today, and she has transformed over 1,500 lives through her leadership, guidance and support. My wife Marissa asks me on a daily basis – “What are you most grateful for today?” I can say without a doubt that I am grateful to have a partner and friend who loves cars as much as I do and lovingly pushes me every day to be a better version of myself. We are both blessed to be a part of the best community on the planet – the car community. We will be taking turns contributing to DRIVENWORLD on a regular basis and look forward to connecting with other couples out there in the car community who love sharing their passion for cars together. Spare Some Change? We Take Plastic! Carl C. Magee of Oklahoma City, OK is credited with inventing the parking meter in May of 1935. Mr. Magee was with the traffic committee of the Oklahoma City “Chamber of Commerce”. It was his job to find a solution to downtown parking problems. The parking meter solved the problem of cars parked all day on the streets, but it also brought revenue to the city. Additionally, it assured parking turn-over so there would always be parking spaces for customers. Donald Duncan, famous for the Duncan YoYo, was the owner of a toy company. He redesigned the parking meter to the fashion we see today. He began his parking meter business in 1937. His meters are used in over 50 countries, and the company remains a leader in the parking control industry. There has been a 35-year parking coma during which the federal government, cities, and environmentalists forgot the importance of parking. Parking is a significant influence on how cities work and what form of travel they decide on. The main underlying idea is manage the supply of parking and you will reduce the demand for driving! Today’s parking meters are more like small computers; they even take credit cards! With an estimated 105,000,000 parking spaces in the United States alone, it’s easy to see why the parking meter is an invention that will be around for a very long time.

[ Some parking facts: ] 1. The average automobile sits parked 95% of the time. 2. Although business owners believe they benefit from free parking, curbside parking meters increase parking turnover so there are always new spaces, and new customers. 3. At free parking spaces, 40-60 percent of vehicles overstay the posted time limits.

What if parking meters charged based on car value like automotive registration?

CLEANING AND DISINFECTING DURING COVID During this time of Covid-19, we all know we should be ever mindful of proper cleaning procedures. This has become especially important to those of us in real estate as our market recovers. There are stringent requirements we must meet in order to allow people to view a property. With the recent uptick in cases of Covid-19 in the Golden State, we want to share some of these very helpful cleaning and disinfecting suggestions from the CDCand OSHA: Hard (Non-porous) Surfaces: Wear disposable gloves when cleaning and disinfecting surfaces. Gloves should be discarded after each cleaning. For disinfection, most common EPAregistered household disinfectants should be effective. Ensure a contact time of at least 1 minute. Prepare a bleach solution by mixing: 5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) bleach per gallon of room temperature water or 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of room temperature water. Bleach solutions will be effective for disinfection up

to 24 hours. Areas to clean that are easily overlooked include: remote controls, telephones, all door knobs, appliance handles and knobs, light switches, faucets, soap and sanitizer dispensers, computer keyboards and mouses, toilet flush handles, interior and exterior car door handles, steering wheels and consul covers. Soft (Porous) Surfaces: For soft (porous) surfaces such as carpeted floor, rugs, and drapes, clean with appropriate cleaners indicated for use. After cleaning, launder items using the warmest appropriate water setting. Electronics: For electronics such as cell phones, tablets, touch screens, remote controls, and keyboards, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for all cleaning and disinfection products. Consider use of wipeable covers for electronics. If no manufacturer guidance is available, alcoholbased wipes or sprays containing at least 70% alcohol to disinfect touch screens will suffice. Dry surfaces thoroughly. Laundry: Wear disposable gloves when handling dirty laundry, especially from an ill person. Discard

after each use. If no gloves are used when handling dirty laundry, wash hands carefully afterwards. Avoid shaking dirty laundry. This will minimize the possibility of dispersing virus through the air. Launder items using the warmest appropriate water setting. Clean and disinfect clothes hampers and use a disposable bag liner or one that can be laundered. Hand hygiene: Household members should clean hands often, including immediately after removing gloves and after contact with an ill person, by washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. (We all know about the Happy Birthday song, so if singing is your thing, then sing it twice.) If soap and water are not available and hands are not visibly dirty, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol may be used. By following recommended guidelines, we not only ensure our own safety, but also the well-being of our loved ones. Stay healthy and well everyone!
