his time of year I always get a bit grateful. I try to be grateful every day. But this time of year is very special to me. To think that all of you have helped to turn a little car show into something amazing and from that the Motor4Toys Charitable Foundation began. A couple cars in a parking lot into collecting over $5,000,000.00 in toys in a little over a decade. All the while, the foundation has no salaries, all efforts are donated. The kindness, generosity and support from all of you is truly a miracle. Thank you. With the passage of all this time, we have all become part of something that is bigger than us. Something that has played a role in so many lives, ours, yet others we may never see or know. Making a difference in handing a kid a toy that they might not have gotten during the holiday season. And for all of us, the friendships and experiences we have shared every Sunday morning, all these years. This time of year has become even more special for my wife and I as both of our children were born during this season. An already busy time became even busier, but we will gladly take it. Our second daughter was born on Nov. 10th, just a few weeks ago. Ava Grace Troyan. We are parents of two daughters. I love it. Naturally all the credit goes to my loving wife. The day we got home from the hospital, I was talking to my mom. If you have been a long time reader, you may recall that both my parents came from very humble beginnings and suffered in ways that I never have. My mom was “disadvantaged” as a child and my dad was an orphan, never adopted. So, I was talking to my mom after Ava was born. I told her how lucky I felt, the girls were healthy, my wife was healthy, we had the baby at a hospital and we are driving home to a house with food in the fridge, a roof over our head a couple of bucks in the bank. How lucky we are. I told her I could not imagine the challenges people go through having a child under different circumstances. How tough it must be.... This time of year, maybe I am a bit soft, I don’t think so, but I do believe in doing what is right. Not because we have to, but because that is when we are at our best. And with Motor4Toys, the way all of you support the event and toy drives, helping to bring joy to children you may never see, well that is a gift that keeps giving. That is an illustration we can all be proud of and you all do such a fine job of it. Our little community is truly a shining light because we choose to be. You
Personally, I am more motivated than ever. Why? Well I have two daughters who are going to inherit whatever it is we do. You, me, them, the gift we
A new year. Well, here’s to you.
leave our children is what we do in our lives, and if you feel like I do, we are not doing enough. So for this next year, I challenge you to do things that you have been putting off. I challenge you to take a trip, to get into shape, to be more involved with your kids schools, your kids teams, your neighborhood, to be apart of a charitable foundation. To finish that car or to start a project car. To start a business or to write a book. To take on that challenge that is gnawing on your soul. We all have that little voice that says...”What if I...”, Well, what if you did. Get out of your comfort zone. Ask that girl out, hug your friends more. Open the doors for others. If I had any influence at all, I would implore you to lead by example. That is what made America the shining example. It was not the politicians, it was the people. The rich people, the poor people. Everyone in between. It is not a color thing, it is a people thing. What made us great is that we believed in the American Way. Truth and justice for all. Emphasis on all. I assert to you, let us lead by example for 2017 and the years after. I will if you will. Little by little, day by day, step by step. Let’s do the best we can. I am counting on you and so are my kids and maybe yours. Thank you for your consideration, your years of support and your passion. We have fun don’t we! Let’s do this!
I am so proud to call you all friends and family.
all give me so much hope and joy and for that I will always be grateful. This year, it has been a little rough on us. Seems that the political situation has frustrated some people. Our country seems to be at odds. Well, what I know is that during this season, our community, the car community, comes together like no other. What we do during December is something that could be an illustration for all others. How to truly be an American or a even just a good human being. Supercar Sunday. Every Sunday for years, we have gotten together. Rich, poor, every type of person, every color of person, every age, every gender and every religion. For three hours on a Sunday, it is how the world is meant to be. To sit back and see so many different people having a good time, laughing, sharing, inspiring, it is how our world should be. I really think that this is one of the things of which I am most proud. How we all come together. I want to thank all of you for this great year and I hope that you have an even better year. I hope that you take those chances and push hard to grow in whatever direction it is that you want to grow. That you excel. I hope that you lead by example, and not wait for others to do so. That others might see your example, get with the program and lead. I fear that we have displaced our leadership because we thought it might be easier to do so...well, that was a mistake. We have one world and it is ours, let’s make it the best we can.
Wishing you and yours the very best for 2017... Dustin and Family 5

HAND BUILT JOHN DUNN
I N T E R V I E W B Y D U S T I N T R OYA N
1. John, how long have you been coming to Supercar Sunday and how did you hear about it? I’ve been coming to Super Car Sunday for about 5 years now. I first heard about it through a friend of mine at work. 2. How did you get into cars? One of my closest friends growing up was into cars. His Dad always had a really cool car in the garage that he was working on and he would always explain to us what he was doing. Then my friend and I started watching the Dukes of Hazzard and then that was it. We were only about 10 years old and we were car guys. 3. What cars have you owned and what is your favorite? I started with muscle cars I had a 1970 RS Camaro, a 1980 Camaro Z28, a 1992 25th anniversary edition RS Camaro, a 1970 SS 454 Chevelle and a 1960 Ford Thunderbird. Then I moved to the sports cars and bought a 1982 Ferrari Mondial, then an 2011 Audi R8 and now the 2015 Porsche Cayman S and the 2016 Exomotive Exocet. My favorite car is the Ferrari. That was the car I always wanted as a kid. 4. I understand you built a kit car.... Yes the 2016 Exomotive Exocet. The donor is a 1991 Mazda Miata 5. Why a kit car? I have always wanted a custom car something no one else has and I love the open wheel configuration. So I started looking into kit cars. I found some really interesting builds and custom kits. I was searching the internet for months when looking for the right build. This kit met all my requirements and has a great price tag. No two Exocet builds are the same so it’s perfect because no one else has a car just like this one. 6. Did you grow up working on cars? I started working on cars when I was 16 when I got a job at a gas station. I’ve never been very good at it though. 7. What was the motivation? It started out with my brother and I just talking about cars. The cars we’ve had and the restores we have done. My brother Tim is a mechanic and so his restores were always far more in depth than any of mine. So after a lot of talking about cars we started talking about doing a project together. Then there was months of talking about what car to buy and restore. Tim kept pushing the idea of bringing this dead Miata down the street back to life. So I found the Exomotive kit for the Miata and the next thing I know we are pushing the non-running $500 Miata down the street into Tim’s garage. 8. Tell us about the car you built? It started out life as a 1991 Mazda Miata that sat dead in a neighbor’s driveway for over 8 years. We took the entire Miata apart and cleaned, painted or powder coated everything to prepare for the build. The drive train is mostly a stock Miata, Tim started by rebuilding the engine and then making a custom air intake and an exhaust. We wanted to lighten the car as much as possible to give it the best possible power/weight ratio so everything that went back on the car had weight in mind. The car weighs less than 1500 lbs. Tim made the dash board from scratch and the toggle switches in the center console are another custom idea he had. The build instructions say to re-use the Miata dash and controls from the original donor Miata but we are a lot happier with all of Tim’s custom work. It was fun coming up with our own ideas for certain parts of the car like the dash, gauges, toggle switches and lights.
10
9. How long did it take to build? The complete tear down of the Miata took 3 months and the Exocet build was completed and street legal in 9 months. So roughly a year in total 10. Who helped? My brother Tim and my 11 year old nephew TJ. The car was built in Phoenix at my brother’s house. So for me there were 2 trips a month to Phoenix for a year until the car was completed. 11. How does it compare to your R8? They are 2 completely different cars. The R8 is an incredible car to drive, tons of power, AWD and there is nothing like the sound of the mid-engine V10. However, I never really like driving the R8 in the Malibu Canyons. The really tight turns and the narrow lanes were not a lot of fun in that car for me. I preferred the longer sweeping turns and wider lanes on Angeles Crest Highway in the R8. The
Exocet is ultra-light and nimble, it is half the weight of the R8. For cruising in the Malibu canyons I must say I prefer the Exocet because it is so much smaller and lighter, it is easier and more fun carving the narrow tight turns. 12. Was it worth it? Building a car? Absolutely! We plan to build another car at some point in the future. It seemed like a huge deal before we started but now that it is behind us it was all worth it, the good and the bad, so we plan to do it again. 13. What did you learn from this project? Proper planning and sticking to the plan and everything will work out. There were times when we were not sure if we would get the car back together. At one point when the Miata was completely disassembled, there was no car in the garage. There were tons of labeled Miata parts but no car. At that point we were thinking, holy
cow how are we going to put this thing back together. But we stuck to the plan and kept ourselves motivated and it all worked out. 14. What would you tell someone that wanted to build something like this? Go for it! Make sure you plan everything out, document as much as you can. Take a ton of pictures for reference. It was a lot of fun and a lot of time, and completely worth it. 15. What was the best part of the whole experience? Spending so much time with my brother Tim and my nephews TJ (11 yrs old) and Westley (7 yrs old). We now have this experience that we will never forget. The boys will have this experience to talk about for the rest of their lives. Don’t get me wrong, the drives in Malibu Canyon and Angeles Crest are epic too. 11

he Petersen Automotive Museum’s “The Art of Bugatti” exhibition opens Sunday, October 23rd, and features one of the rarest gatherings of Bugatti automobiles in history including a 1935 Type 57SC Atlantic, a Type 41 Royale and (for a limited time) a 2017 Chiron. The exhibit also includes works of art by the Bugatti family including sculpture, furniture, paintings and more in the Mullin Grand Salon. Los Angeles, Calif. (October, 2016) - The Petersen Automotive Museum is pleased to announce the opening of its newest exhibition, The Art of Bugatti. The exhibition features a rare assemblage of Bugatti family artwork and Bugatti automobiles including rare Atlantic and Royale models, as well as the fastest production super sports car ever built, the new Bugatti Chiron. The exhibit is located in the Mullin Grand Salon on the museum’s first floor and will run through the fall of 2017. “The work of the Bugatti family has become a great passion of mine over the years,” said Peter Mullin, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Petersen Automotive Museum. “They are one of the greatest art dynasties of the 20th century and yet many people are only familiar with their automotive works. The purpose of this exhibit is to help the public see how four generations of one family have been creating beauty in different ways – furniture, sculpture, paintings, writings and automobiles. The mediums differ but their passion and aesthetic is constant.” “This is the most significant Bugatti exhibition ever mounted. It is a great honor for us and we would like to thank the Petersen Automotive Museum, and Peter Mullin in particular, for making this possible”, said Stefan Brungs, Member of the Board of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. for Sales, Marketing and Customer Service at the opening event. “No other automotive manufacturer could display the history of the brand with sculptures, furniture, paintings and many other objects of decorative art in addition to a host of dazzling automotive masterpieces, which is crowned by Bugatti’s latest creation, the new Chiron. The Art of Bugatti is celebrating the roots, the past, the present and the future of this unique brand.” The Art of Bugatti exhibit gives museum-goers an inside look at the history of the Bugatti family beginning with its patriarch, Carlo Bugatti, and his unique path through the arts which included a mastery of architecture, painting, Art Nouveau furniture design and silversmithing. It then goes into great detail on the work of his sons, sculptor Rembrandt and carmaker Ettore Bugatti, as well as Ettore’s children and studies the influence of Rembrandt’s animal-life sculptures on his brother Ettore’s art-deco era automotive designs, both of which incorporate the Fibonacci sequence, or “golden mean.” Art of Bugatti also offers a history of the family itself, including correspondence and historical artifacts. The vehicles on display include the 1925 Bugatti Type 35C Grand Prix, a 1939 Bugatti Type 44 Fiacre, a 1930 Bugatti Type 46 Cabriolet, a 1931 Bugatti Type 50 S, a 1931 Bugatti Type 54, a 1932 Bugatti Type 55 Supersport, one of four 1935 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantics, 1939 Bugatti Type 57C Aravis by Gangloff, a 1939 Bugatti Type 57C by Vanvooren, a 1939 Bugatti Type 57C Atalante by Gangloff, 1939/49 Bugatti Type 57C Atalante, and the last Bugatti overseen by members of the family, the 1951 Bugatti Type 101C. Also on display are the extremely rare 1994 Bugatti EB110 Super Sport Le Mans and the aforementioned Chiron, which will be on display until early November. Guests will learn of the Bugatti family’s great triumphs and many tragedies beginning with the death of Rembrandt as well as the untimely death of Ettore’s son Jean Bugatti. In addition to the vehicles, the exhibit includes paintings, sculpture, writings, furniture and other Bugatti family designs. The Art of Bugatti exhibition represents a once in a lifetime opportunity for museum guests to experience the Bugatti family in all their splendor and to see an unprecedented number of their beautiful automobiles in one place, displayed as they should be, as art. STREET RACING CAN BE MURDER THE THEORY OF “IMPLIED MALICE” A R T I C L E B Y O F F I C E R S E A N R E I N H A R DT, L A P D
L
et’s get one thing straight, you’re not a “street racer.” “Street racers” are those out of control young guys who mostly drive Japanese “rice rockets.” They stage those dangerous late night illegal drag races in deserted places with crowds of spectators. You hate those guys because they often give real “car guys,” like you, a bad name. You know what happens when the cops catch them, they get arrested and their cars get crushed, and that’s fine with you. Those “street racers” are a menace to the public and you think the cops should nail them whenever they can. You’re fortysomething
Citrus Heights, Calif. - Investigators said the two cars were engaging in a street race when one of the drivers lost control of his car and slammed into a tree. The guy driving was killed and his passenger was badly injured. Although the other driver was not involved in the actual crash, he was charged with murder in the death of the other driver. The D.A. office is seeking a prison term of 15 years to life. The D.A.’s office has filed second-degree murder charges in similar cases in the past and won. A spokesperson said the fact that the race reached speeds of 70 to 80 miles an hour and took place on a busy stretch of road shows that the racers demonstrated a conscious disregard for human life with “malice implied”.
Charlotte, N.C. - A 44 year-old mother who turned herself in to police and admitted to driving a car involved in a deadly street race has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder. Police said she was racing her Camaro against 20-year-old male earlier this month when he crashed into another car, killing a woman, and her 2-year-old daughter. The male faces three counts of second-degree murder and, although not involved in the crash, the female is also facing three counts of second-degree murder. The Judge set her bond at $3 million dollars.
and a pretty regular “car guy.” Sure you got a few speeding tickets back when you were a kid, but what car guy didn’t? You have always loved muscle cars and last year you treated yourself to a new Camaro SS. Sure nobody needs more than the 455 stock horsepower, but you still had to add the after-market exhaust, the high flow intake and a high-performance computer chip. That’s what car guys do. You’re not going to race it, just take it to Supercar Sunday and maybe do some car shows. One day you’re out driving and pull up to a red light. Up next to you pulls a Dodge Charger SRT-8. The driver looks over at you, some guy, mid 20’s, you don’t know him but you know what he’s thinking. The lights turn green and you just do a quick jump to show him what a SS can do. He stands on it too, but you still pull him by a few feet. You quickly back off at about fifty, not too fast, but the other guy stays on it. The guy is about a block ahead, doing maybe eighty, when he hits the mini-van. The mom driving failed to judge his speed and changed into his lane ahead of him. The impact spreads fire and debris across six lanes of traffic. You stop to help, but the guy driving the Dodge, the 28 year-old mom, her 9 year-old son, and her 4 year-old daughter are all dead. What was that stupid guy thinking? It was terrible accident, but at least you weren’t involved! Reality check, in the eyes of the law and public, you engaged in an “impromptu street race” and you are involved. Based on witness accounts, the police will arrest you and you will be charged with at least four counts of second-degree murder, and you will certainly be sued for financial damages by the families of the victims, including the family of the guy driving the Dodge. Your life, as you know it, is over…. The theory of “Implied Malice” is simple. You engaged in an activity that you know is illegal and potentially dangerous, and you are held responsible for any negative results. Think of it this way, you’re the get-away driver in a bank robbery. If any one dies in the heist (even one of your own gang and even though you’re outside in the car) you’re charged with murder. Prosecutors are now applying the same theory of “Implied Malice” to street racing. Unfortunately, many of us are living in the past. We remember the “good old days” of cruising. You know, “American Graffiti,” Woodward Avenue and Van Nuys Boulevard, where stop light to stop light drag races were common, if not down- right American. Well, things are different now! If the last street race from “American Graffiti” occurred today and the guy who crashed the ’55 Chevy (a young Harrison Ford) or his passenger had died, John Milner would be in prison for seconddegree murder and his ’32 Ford Coupe, along with all his other assets, would be gone! So the next time you’re out driving your toy, feeling frisky, and somebody that thinks they’re fast pulls up next to you, look over at the guy and El Monte, California– Two guys, both ask yourself, “Am I really going to chance going friends, were racing when one car swerved to prison and losing all my financial assets by across lanes, traveled across the center median racing that guy?!!” into opposing traffic and crashed into another For all of our sakes, I hope not. car. The guy was killed and four people inside the other car were seriously injured. The other guy, who was not physically involved in the crash, was charged with one count of murder with the special allegation of causing great bodily injury; one count of vehicular manslaughter and four counts of reckless driving causing injury – all felonies. Prosecutors asked for bail set at $1.1 million.

LOS ANGELES AUTO SHOW | 2016

PHOTO AND ARTICLE BY GREG GRUDT
he 2016 LA Auto Show always hits the LA Convention Center right around Thanksgiving time and it never disappoints. To start off the day on Wednesday, November 16, 2016, Alfa Romeo unveiled a brand-new SUV called the Stelvio and Nissan shocked the world with the Nissan Rogue One complete with a massive full size Star Wars Tie Fighter on display at the booth. This Nissan Rogue One is the first time that Lucas Films has ever collaborated with an automobile manufacturer and was meant to coincide with the release of the movie “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” later this month. The Nissan Rogue One will be a limited production SUV available in either black or white. Only 5400 Nissan Rogue One’s will be built and each vehicle comes with a Limited Edition Death Trooper Replica Helmet. Each SUV will also be adorned with Star Wars badges and logos throughout the vehicle as well. Mercedes-Benz unveiled some new cars including the all new MercedesMaybach S650 Cabriolet which is limited to 300 cars. Only 75 of those cars will be delivered to the United States. The Mercedes AMG GT C Roadster was unveiled as well which looked stunning. It will be nice to see these cars hitting the streets of Southern California very soon. Downstairs in “The Garage” below the halls featured the latest cars and aftermarket automotive accessories. Some like to refer to it as a mini SEMA. High end luxury cars of all makes and models were adorned with flashy rims, wide body kits, lights, custom paint jobs, wings, spoilers and just about everything else. It seems like every year the rims get bigger and the wings get taller and the wraps get wilder. There was literally something for everyone down in this section of the LA Auto Show. Overall, it is always enjoyable walking the halls of the Los Angeles Convention Center, mingling with automotive enthusiasts and journalist and of course seeing the latest and greatest cars being unveiled to the public. If you missed the LA Auto Show this year, I highly recommend you attend next year’s show.

FERRARI LOS ANGELES PRESENTS PIAZZA GRAN TURISMO
S
PHOTO AND ARTICLE BY GREG GRUDT
uper Car Sunday has been around for over a decade now. During that time, many similar Cars and Coffee type events have emerged in and around the Los Angeles area. One of these events goes by the name of Piazza Gran Turismo. Piazza GT is presented by Ferrari Los Angeles (soon to be Ferrari Westlake Village) and now the YMCA as well. The once small intimate gathering that was only a group of about 15-20 Ferraris a little more than a year ago has grown into a very large monthly event with a variety of high end automobiles. The event previously took place at the Stonehaus in Westlake Village but that location was quickly outgrown which led to the relocation to the brand-new YMCA facility overlooking all of Westlake Village. The first Piazza Gran Turismo at the new location took place on Sunday, November 13, 2016 and as you can see from the photographs, it was huge! From Mercedes-Benz to Aston Martins and from Ferraris to Paganis, there was something for everyone at this show. If you have a new or classic exotic, then please be sure to check out this show. If you are coming in from the San Fernando Valley or Los Angeles, then feel free to stop by the World-Famous Supercar Sunday in Woodland Hills first and then head over to Piazza Gran Turismo afterwards. Piazza Gran Turismo is from 9am – 11am on the second Sunday of every month at the new YMCA site on Thousand Oaks Blvd. in Westlake Village. As we always respect Supercar Sunday and its nearby neighbors, please remember to respect the surrounding neighborhood of Piazza GT by not racing to and from and no revving of your engines either. This goes for all car related events but most importantly Piazza Gran Turismo and Supercar Sunday.

o many people I’ve come across say that they don’t subscribe to any kind of diet. Well, truth be told, that if you eat food, then you have a diet. It may be, “screw it, I love donuts” kind of diet, but it still counts. A few years ago, I was having several health problems. My digestive system was in complete chaos. I was experiencing tons of stomach pains, let alone all of the emotional ups and downs. I had no idea what was happening. It was like a war zone inside my bod! I felt like there was more to life than curling in the corner of my room in fetal position due to such stomach discomfort. So, I took matters into my own hands and got “serious” about my nutrition. I began researching the Paleo diet, and felt pretty confident that this would help rebuild my digestive system from a war zone, to a peaceful zen yoga studio. I found that it was incredibly challenging, but I did feel better and more energized. I completely cut out gluten and dairy and my digestive system started to say “namaste” rather than “Billy, run, get to the choppa.” So, that was a good sign. When I decided I wanted to seriously focus on weight lifting, and begin my journey to possibly compete, I opted for “clean eating” with weekend cheat meals ie, binge so hard you lose all the progress you made that week. So, that diet didn’t work out so well. After complete fails of paleo and then clean eating with cheat days, I was exhausted and was over obsessive about food. Then, one day while I was laying in bed looking at my weekly workout routine, a glimmering light of hope came shining in, indicating that there was such thing as in a flexible diet i.e.. ALL YOU CAN EAT. Around the time I began eating Paleo that was when my food obsession began. I would go to the store and look at all the ingredients, and if I was visiting someone, I had to make sure they had the right kind of food in the house for me. I was a nightmare guest! It was an obsession with food, to the point where you would have a twenty minute self talk dialogue about whether or not you should grab a second piece of bread, and completely block out the conversations that was going on around you. Or, that feeling of uncontrollable appetite that once you unleash that appetite, the flood gates open, and you can’t stop yourself from indulging in a bag of chips. Does that sound familiar? That’s because binge eating disorder is far more common than we would like to admit. You are not alone. We all have those tendencies and so do I. As a coach, I have given people many people tools to reach their goals. This doesn’t mean I point my finger at them and tell them when, what, or where to eat. I provide guidelines and knowledge to know what it takes to reach a goal, or whatever their priority is. When I decided take eating habits and training to the next level, I did not OCD about weighing or tracking my food. But, I did eat small meals every three hours to curb my appetite to avoid binging on junk food. Also, sometimes I enjoy the food I cook for myself, friends and loved ones. Some days I have egg whites for breakfast and salad for lunch and sometimes I drink too much coffee and not enough water. We are not perfect and that is what life is all about to screw up and find another method that works better for you. If a certain diet doesn’t work, find one that does. I find that eating whole nutritious food, rather than processed foods, work for me. And heck, I even add some gluten into my diet just to live on the wild side. So, you got this! I know you do. Keep on moving your body, drinking water, and do what makes you happy.

ride in ones car is a hallmark of just about any automotive enthusiast. Lots of money, blood, sweat, and tears can go into creating a unique vehicle that reflects the personality of the owner. It can become their mechanical child and seeing a professional photograph of it can make an owner well up with tears of pride. Prices can vary wildly from photographer to photographer as well as what you want on the back end, being prints or digital copies, etc. Research your local photographers and check out their portfolios and find the photographer that fits the owner’s style and your budget. This gift will continue to live on no matter what happens to the vehicle in the future as it becomes part of the vehicle’s history. It’s easy to get slipped up on an automotive gift, but one thing that an owner can never have too much of, is professional photos of their creation.
his could be considered a great gift to the right DIY’er. For those that don’t know, the sizes listed are the most common sizes used in everyday types of repairs and modifications on most vehicles. Unfortunately, these are also the most commonly lost. To put a smile on the face of any home mechanic, head on over to your local Harbor Freight and for about $1.00 each, you can load up a bucket full of each of these sizes in multiple! The loss of these tools are arguably the root cause of 99% of profanities, vulgarities, and high blood pressure experienced by any mechanic. It’s become the butt of many jokes and memes and is often the cause of making a job that would take one hour, last 4 or 5 hours. Just ask! For every 1 hour of actual work, 2-5 hours are spent looking for these exact tools! I’ve even lost them while sitting still! I’m not sure if it’s a design flaw, gremlins, ghosts, the Bermuda triangle, or parallel dimensions, but these tools disappear often.

ollowing the torrential rains of 2015 that not only washed away income but also circuit infrastructure, The Circuit of The Americas enjoyed a bright rebound for the 2016 United States Grand Prix. Austin saw the largest attendance to date for the 18th Round of the F1 World Championship, the fifth on Texas hill country. Buoyed by somewhat cooler than expected temperatures and clear blue skies, memories of last year’s soggy unpleasantness seemed distant. Inconceivable was the notion that F1 might never again return to the popular circuit, a grave possibility that loomed as late as early 2016. For certain, the past few years have been tough on F1. The 2014 introduction of the Mercedes-penned V6 Turbo Hybrid formula never really caught on with the worldwide fan base. Hopes that the new aesthetic would eventually be embraced ran aground midway 2015, and the sport’s brain trust responded. Given the dominance enjoyed by
formula’s authors, it was apparent that F1 needed a rethink. Thus a new formula will be introduced next year. Stronger, higher revving engines, bigger tires, faster cars. Much faster. The FIA also took two interim measures to stem further evaporation of F1 interest in the meantime: introducing a separate exhaust wastegate to increase engine noise, and distributing more development tokens to the teams in an effort to reduce technical stagnation. Competition-wise, optimism that Ferrari had finally produced a car vastly improved to challenge Mercedes also gave F1’s hardcore holdouts hope for a more exciting season. Unfortunately, those hopes were soon dashed. The 2016 F1 season has arguably proven to be the least competitive in the otherwise glorious 67-year history of the sport. Like all major racing series, F1 is suffocating under over-regulation while the sporting side of the endeavor further succumbs to commercial and marketing objectives. Yes, F1
was once seemingly immune to these pressures. Yet the atmosphere in Austin was one of excitement and anticipation. F1 was back, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen were in town, as were Ferrari, Williams, McLaren, and Haas F1, the first US F1 team in nearly 30 years. Throw in another tight battle between Hamilton and his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg for the 2016 Driver’s Title, and there remained much to play for on CoTA’s undulating ribbon of asphalt. Mercedes locked the front row of the grid as expected, but Red Bull and Ferrari both showed pace. Pole sitter Hamilton out-dragged Rosberg up the hill to assume a lead he would not relinquish, but as Nico lost 2nd to Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull exiting the first corner, it looked like the fight for the podium might be on. It was. Rosberg regained 2nd on the first pit-stop rotation. Verstappen, Räikkönen, and Vettel kept it close, but the bottom step eventually stayed with Ricciardo, aided by the virtual safety car deployed after his teammate Verstappen’s gearbox failed.
Never challenged, Hamilton took his third Austin victory in a row. Unlike last year’s conquest that awarded his third world driver’s championship, this victory would instead launch Lewis’ defense of that title with three rounds remaining. His was an enormously popular result, as the sometimes-controversial English pilot enjoys a passionate fan base in the US. Romain Grosjean came home in 10th, scoring a last, but very valuable championship point for Haas in their debut on US soil. Despite the ups and downs CoTA has endured since bringing F1 back to the US in 2012, this year’s Grand Prix truly felt like a corner had been turned. With some luck the sport will right itself and move beyond recent transitional pains to return to its former glory. F1 is a spectacle, and The Circuit of The Americas is a very special proscenium.

It was Christmas of 1968. It was the year Evel Knievel failed his attempt to jump the fountains at Caesar’s Palace. The Beatles released “Magical Mystery Tour”, Nixon was elected the 37th president, and Mattel Toys released their first line of sixteen models of fantasy custom cars called “Hot Wheels”. They had names like Python, Custom Cougar, and Hot Heap. The 1969 corvette was actually released by Mattel before General Motors released the car for sale to the public!
Early Hot Wheels were defined with a
red line wheel
Within one year, sales were 10 times higher than had been anticipated. Mattel grew the line to 40 cars and for the first few years the cars were actually built in the USA!
In 1971, Hot Wheels began its promotion with drag strips around the country. In 1973, Mattel teamed up with Don “The Snake” Prudome and Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen to form one of the most famous sponsorships in racing. They also engaged a long relationship in NASCAR with Kyle Petty. Over the years “Hot Wheels” have introduced motorcycles, chrome versions, and special collector’s sets. Mc Donald’s even uses them as gifts in their “Happy Meals”. In 1991 the 1 billionth “Hot Wheel” was produced! In 2003, Mattel teamed up with Columbia Pictures to celebrate Hot Wheels 34th anniversary with a Hot Wheels Movie! Hot Wheels still appeal to the youth of today, along with their dads. If any of you guys over 50 have your old Hot Wheels tucked away in the attic, you may be surprised as to what they are worth!
Cheryle, whose daily driver is a 2003 50th anniversary Corvette, admiring the lines of a 1968 Hot Wheels Corvette.
It’s no doubt that Santa’s helpers have been working overtime producing new versions of these wonderful toy cars for the holiday season. Happy Holidays from the employees of Leon’s Transmissions. 35

reating yourself to a comfortable, luxurious, and technologically advanced car is one of the best feelings you can experience. After two hours behind the wheel of the new 2017 Lincoln Continental, I can think of no better way to end a days work than to not have to worry about stop-and-go traffic. Now of course you’ll still hit that rush hour freeway, but the Continental has you covered. When equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control, the Continental will adjust its speed based on the car in front of you. After that eminent dead stop, it will resume driving keeping the distance between you and the car in front of you that makes you feel most comfortable. Keeping your hands on the steering wheel, it will make your leg cramps from the constant switch between braking and accelerating a thing of the past. Did anyone mention 400 hp? Well let me tell you, once that rush-hour traffic lightened up, it was no issue at all getting up to speed! With all that power combined with the comfort of the Continental, what more could you ask for? Now keeping in mind that you’ve got that kind of power, sometimes its easy to take the curve on an exit ramp a little fast. With the Dynamic Torque Vectoring you can rest assured that the car knows what you need. Transferring power to the appropriate rear wheel to make sure you take that curve with the right amount of balance to keep you going. Now this feature is available only in an AWD Continental. Even when you aren’t on that exit ramp and the road gets a little bumpy the sensors that monitor the road conditions will automatically adjust the suspension to optimize the well known “smooth ride” Lincoln is notorious for. Continuously controlled dampening will make that old interstate roller-coaster seem like a sweet lullaby. Seeing a two hour drive ahead of me, I thought it would result in the usual 5 minutes of stretching and wishing I had left before 4:00 in the afternoon.
36
Oh how wrong I was! With the 30-way seats I was able to adjust my headrest in four directions, my shoulder support, lumbar, and the thigh support for each leg individually. Adding in my preference of cooling seats with heated as an option, a massage, and the ability to adjust as I went, I arrived to the car show wishing it had taken a little longer to get there. In this particular build of the Continental both driver and passenger seats had all of these options. The outboard seats in the back had heated and cooled seats, massage, and power recline options. In between the two rear seats was your typical pull down tab to what would normally be an arm rest, and if you’re lucky, cup-holders. In the Continental that pull down tab revealed an entire interface for the two rear seats settings, as well as climate and audio controls. After being in the car for a while, it was time to see how the latest loop of songs sounded in this amazing car. Equipped with the Revel Ultima system by HARMAN, I experienced 19 speakers with the clearest sound I’d heard from a vehicle. Although I am no connoisseur of sound systems, I could hear the distinct difference immediately. Crystal clear sound, matched with Active Noise Canceling in the Continental, I had only the noises I wanted to hear surrounding me as I drove. Now my experience was in a Chalet and Vineyard themed Black Label Lincoln Continental. This year it is also available in Rhapsody, and Thoroughbred theme. After seeing all but Rhapsody, I can honestly say that the attention to detail has only further perfected the appeal of the Continental for me. Chalet and Vineyard gave me the feeling of a clean, calm resort room in Italy. Matched with a breathtaking ride, I couldn’t have picked out a thing I didn’t like. With premium leather that was silk-soft to the touch, suede headliner, as well as a distinguishing appearance, I was enjoying the luxury.

ecember is here and we thought it might be fun to offer a few seasonal decorating ideas that don’t scream out any one particular holiday or red-and-green-everywhere. Colors seen together in nature work beautifully when you’re decorating. Mother Nature really does know best and combining green with brown is a perfect example. Try decorating a green tree with only brown ornaments or placing various sized buckets on your porch filled with green branches, logs and pinecones. Combining green, burlap and white to create any number of scenes is always elegant and stylish. Dried wild feather bouquets and wreaths offer deep textures and tones. Consider lighting up your hanging planters with small white lights for a subtle, warm glow. If red is a must have for you, Red Amaryllis flowers provide a beautiful non-traditional option. Finally, let’s toast the season with tinsel cocktail stirrers. Cheers to all and Happy Holidays!
