with this...sure.” It is almost a game over the last six-ish years to see who will be the first person to say “no.” Sick, tired, hurt, we get the job done. And, so does the rest of the team. We try really hard and because of the mutual respect for each other and each person's efforts, we have a winning combination. Coming into work, it is a great place to be because of the way we treat each other as well as the guests. Inspiration can come from so many different places. From anyone at anytime. You just have to be open to it. You have to accept the challenge. Gabriel accepted a “health challenge” from David and has subsequently transformed into the epitome of health. In five short months, he has metamorphosed into a new person. He is clearly happier, healthier, more active and inspiring everyone around him. At the beginning of his “health challenge,” he asked me if I wanted to do it. The timing was not right and I knew that I would not succeed. So, I said, ask me later. Over the next few months, Gabriel modified his diet, started working out and man...he is really looking good. Fit, healthy, he glows. He kept hinting and nudging at me to do it. He did it in a nice way. A friendly manner. Not pushy, but supportive. He would do little things like asking me if I had eaten, and if I hadn’t, he would grab a salad for me. He would bring extra healthy snacks for me, or even cut up an apple and leave it on my desk. I knew what he was doing, I knew he was right, but I couldn’t focus on it. Time, energy, excuses. It was not the right time.

Heavily caffeinated. Indeed, I am heavily caffeinated. I think I got about an hour or two of sleep last night. My wife was sick, one of our kids couldn’t sleep, so I found myself rocking our four year old in the wee hours of the morning while watching her favorite cartoon. Many of you have been there, a right of passage for a parent. A good laugh when you tell your friends who have kids or your own parents. “We have all been there...”

So over the course of about five months, Gabe really started to get into shape. He was down about fifty pounds. He was working out, running, focused on health. He inspired his family, many of his co-workers and well, he hadn’t given up on me. I think it was a personal challenge for him, he needed to get me healthier. Every week I would comment on how great he looked and he would smile and say thank you. He would say motivating things to me. He continued to offer healthy snacks and hint that I should workout more. I have been exceedingly fit in my life, but not so much these days. And truth be told my fitness, or lack thereof, was really bothering me. Sure, I could go run five miles. I could ride my bike to Malibu from the Valley, but that is not really saying much. I could do those things, but not nearly how I used to do. And, whether it is lack of time or motivation, I really needed a kick start.

So as I write this, I wonder how much will make sense. They say that with sleep deprivation, your brain does not work as well as it should. Your concentration and focus goes. Enter, espresso. The lovely mixture of finely ground coffee with steam pushed through it. As the steam cools and turns back into a liquid, you have espresso. The term espresso denotes a brewing method, not necessarily a type of coffee bean or coffee blends. The blends are formulated to be used in an espresso machine, for a certain flavor profile and crema, for that particular type of brewing. And it is not Expressso with an “X”, it is Espresso. You are not on the highway back east.

Gabe never gave up. He kept being positive, he kept improving his health until it got to a point that, well, his positivity and his illustration became too much to ignore. I was leaving Lavaggio one afternoon and told him that I was going to a client of mine, Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks. He asked me if I was going to work out? I said no, I had a meeting, he smiled and said, well I am going to work out. Perhaps he smiled extra big or his eyes shined extra bright, but that was the straw that broke this camel’s back. I asked him if he was calling me out, he said he was. I always say you can’t argue when someone is right, and I knew he was right. So, I told him I was in. Fine, I will get in shape. He smiled and said good.

Ok, so maybe I am firing on all eight cylinders or perhaps I am in a daze and what I am writing really doesn't make sense. Does it matter? Are you reading this? Uh oh, the caffeine is wearing off. I better think fast and write faster. I am very lucky to be surrounded by nice people. I have written this before. I think if you know me, you know how grateful I am for my family and friends. For the community I am surrounded by. We really do have a lot of fun. But I am also very lucky to work with some pretty amazing people at many different businesses. Some automotive and some not. I run around like crazy, from place to place, from stop to stop. I try to add value to each of my clients, but what is interesting is that they add value back into my life. I am really lucky to have great clients as well as wonderful employees/ co-workers at said clients.

The next day we talked about it. His program, his focus, his staying motivated. How great he felt. I was in. I started the following Monday. I also got on the phone and called a bunch of friends and told them Gabriel’s story...I asked them to accept the “Gabriel Challenge” as I called it. Many of us have been talking about getting fit again, and well, looks like we are. The challenge is twenty pounds in three months. Easily doable for many of us. We are on the road to health and fitness. Very exciting. Most everyone I spoke to wanted in. We all wanted some change and needed some motivating.

Of the many clients that I am proud to represent is Lavaggio-The Art of Auto Detailing in Agoura Hills. I have been with Lavaggio almost since its inception. If you haven't been there, you should swing by. The place is amazing for many different reasons. Yes, the facility itself is truly second to none, but, it all begins with the people. Starting at the top is the owner, David Delrahim. How lucky I was indeed to have met David. Somebody who really understands what is important in life and how to treat people. I tell people that he is an employer, a friend and a mentor. He leads by example and is truly a wonderful human being. He sets a tone for business that really puts people first. Both his customers/guests as well as his employees. So much can be learned from a man like David and many of us have learned a lot from him.

A week has passed and I am doing well. The biggest thing is that I made the decision. I turned the page and I am headstrong. Once I make up my mind, that is that. It feels good to be back in charge and moving in the right direction. I so miss being fit. What does all this have to do with anything? Well even being sleep deprived, I feel great, I feel hope, I feel optimistic, I feel healthier. I am inspired. I am inspired by a great co-worker, a great friend, someone who did not give up on me and someone who is inspiring everyone around him. Providing such an amazing environment for all of those around him. David started it with Gabe, Gabe has taken the torch and ran with it and there is now a fire in many of us. I guess at the end of the day, inspire those around you like Gabriel has. It makes work and life so much more fun.

I spend a good amount of time at Lavaggio. I enjoy being there, I enjoy the guests that come in and the team at Lavaggio. What a wonderful team! From the concierge to the detailers to Gabriel. We follow the lead from Mr. Delrahim and focus on positivity. Both with guests at Lavaggio and each other. Courtesy, respect, passion and value. Gabriel. Gabe and I have worked together for years. We both subscribe to the leadership illustration from David. We support each other and the rest of the team. We always get the job done and we have a fun time doing it. I don’t think either of us have ever said “no” to each other. “Can you do this, can you do that...sure.” “Can you assist

Thank you Gabriel, thank you David. - Dustin 5

Tax Cuts & Jobs Act As realtors, we are receiving a lot of inquiries about how the new Tax and Jobs Act will affect the market. According to Time Magazine’s Shaina Mishkin, “Congress…curtailed some provisions that specifically benefit homeowners, like deductions for mortgage interest and state and local taxes. Taken together these changes could spell a dramatic change for U.S. home ownership. According to housing researcher Zillow, the share of homeowners who itemize their tax returns will drop from 44% to 14%....despite any overall benefits, for millions of Americans owning a home will no longer carry the financial advantages it did before.” Realegal, the newsletter of the California Association of Realtors, states: “While it is still too early to know with any certainty the overall impact of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act…there are a several areas of the Act that may have an immediate effect.” They have provided this quick guideline :

1. Mortgage Interest Deduction. - For loans taken out after December 14, 2017, MID is capped at $750k. Refinances and equity loans for home improvement retain MID subject to some limitations. 2. State and Local Taxes. - The SALT deduction is capped at $10,000. 3. Capital Gains Exclusion. - The Act retains the ownership and use period of two of the last five years for the capital gains exclusion of $250,000 (single filers) and $500,000 (joint filers). 4. 1031 Exchanges. - The Act limits 1031 exchange treatment to real property. 1958 C1 Corvette

ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY DR. CAR NUT RANDY COOPER

My wife has always wanted a car like the one used on the old TV show "Route 66". For those of you who are too young to know of that TV show, it was a story of two young guys cruising throughout the United States in a new Corvette. My wife hails from Montreal, Canada where there were few Corvettes to be seen. I have had several Corvettes in my collection including C2 and C3 examples. She zeroed in on the year that she wanted, a 1958 Corvette which is a C1. I purchased our example from the young woman who was pregnant with her first child and needed the money for a downpayment on a house for she and

her husband. She had owned the car since she was a teenager. Once the purchase price was agreed upon I took our new acquisition home and planned the restoration. I discovered that she was 1 of 190 examples out of over 9100 Corvettes that were painted Panama yellow with Snow Crest white coves. There were 3,422 Corvettes with the RPO440 two tone option, which makes this color combination quite unique. 1958 saw the addition of dual headlamps, aerodynamic taillamps, a faux louvered hood that looks like a washboard and chrome trim adorning the trunk. This was a big change from the 1957 models. The trunk looks similar to my 1954 Buick Skylark.

12

The restoration consisted of a new coat of paint, rechroming as well as polishing the stainless trim. A new correct charcoal interior was installed. The engine was rebuilt to 270 horsepower specifications which included solid camshaft and dual four-barrel carburetors. This is mated to a correct Borg Warner T10 4-speed transmission. Since this is a radio delete car I went with open wheels with poverty caps instead of www and full wheel covers. This and her color scheme make her appear somewhat different than other C1 Corvettes of that time period. She is a joy to drive and gets thumbs up wherever I take her.

Spare Some Change? We Take Plastic! Carl C. Magee of Oklahoma City, OK is credited with inventing the parking meter in May of 1935. Mr. Magee was with the traffic committee of the Oklahoma City “Chamber of Commerce”. It was his job to find a solution to downtown parking problems. The parking meter solved the problem of cars parked all day on the streets, but it also brought revenue to the city. Additionally, it assured parking turn-over so there would always be parking spaces for customers. Donald Duncan, famous for the Duncan YoYo, was the owner of a toy company. He redesigned the parking meter to the fashion we see today. He began his parking meter business in 1937. His meters are used in over 50 countries, and the company remains a leader in the parking control industry. There has been a 35-year parking coma during which the federal government, cities, and environmentalists forgot the importance of parking. Parking is a significant influence on how cities work and what form of travel they decide on. The main underlying idea is manage the supply of parking and you will reduce the demand for driving! Today’s parking meters are more like small computers; they even take credit cards! With an estimated 105,000,000 parking spaces in the United States alone, it’s easy to see why the parking meter is an invention that will be around for a very long time.

[ Some parking facts: ] 1. The average automobile sits parked 95% of the time. 2. Although business owners believe they benefit from free parking, curbside parking meters increase parking turnover so there are always new spaces, and new customers. 3. At free parking spaces, 40-60 percent of vehicles overstay the posted time limits.

Last Sunday

ARTICLE & Photos by MARK MOLLICA

Last Sunday ( Jan 21) was the second annual 2018 Clean Car Show put on by the Channel Islands section of the Mercedes Benz Club of America and co-hosted by the Camarillo Airport Museum inside of their large main hangar. This event was not limited to MBCA members only. It was open to Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts throughout the area. There was a great turnout from members of the 3 Point Social Club as well. This year’s gathering had cars ranging in years from 1959 – 2017. There were award plaques given out for 7 different categories. It’s not so much of a high stakes car show but more of a beginning of the year get together and many new friends were made by all. Many members from the Santa Barbara area had pre-registered but were unable to attend due to the highway 101 closure from the mudslide. The show was a success and we’ve already reserved the airport for a January 2019 repeat.

2018 VFR Mustangs ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY JAMES STANLEY

The 2018 Mustang has a new look to it and every time the Ford designers change something on the iconic pony car, you'll hear grumbles from the crowds of Mustang loyalist and Ford haters how the new look just looks bad. I will admit that when I first saw the refreshed front and rear ends of the 2018 Mustang, I had to put my own biases aside and look at it a bit more objectively. I looked at photo after photo of pre-release images and I found it quite difficult to love the new look as much as I do the 2015-17 Mustang. This all changed when I put an image of the new Mustang into my 'Photoshop Garage" and started to digitally modify the car. I quickly realized that this new look is sleeker, more aggressive, and overall a better look than the previous body style. "This is what the Ford designers originally had in mind for the 2015 Mustang" Said Haro Dirkrikorian, Bojix Design owner and award Winning Ford SEMA builder. He said that it was closer to the profile of the GT350 which is more aerodynamic. This would make sense since the new front end does dive down a bit more aggressively in the hood that the previous generation. The more I look at these cars, the more I love it. I went to the order guide to see what was available with the new Mustangs as far as colors and options, and quickly decided on which cars would be our first four builds for VFR. The first build was a quick and easy decision as far as color and options. We chose a new color for 2018 called Royal Crimson Metallic which is a deep and dark red metallic with slight hints of purple. We ordered it as a GT and with the all-new 10-speed automatic transmission. We knew from previous VFR Mustang builds that the split between manual and automatic builds was right down the middle, and we would always sell the automatics first. We were also very curious about the new transmission and how it would perform. On paper, it's actually faster than the manual and for many, at the end of the day, it's all about what's fastest. A true LA driver since you won't be dancing the 3-pedal-polka during 101/405 traffic. Our second build was another GT, this time in black with the performance pack which include a large spoiler, improved suspension, and Brembo brakes among other improvements. Another 10-speed automatic was chosen and as for modified style, we stuck with the classics. Satin black rally stripes with red pin striping on the outer edges, Gloss Black 20" Staggered KMC Wheels, VFR/Granatelli Coolant reservoir, and a satin black trunk panel. Build #3 was our first manual transmission car. We were originally planning a very red white and blue themed look, but pulled it back a bit by trading out the red with silver. Gloss white rally stripes, silver pinstripe, spoiler delete, staggered 20" TSW polished wheels in addition to the Eibach Sportline springs, and this car was complete. Our 4th build was our first Ecoboost and it's a looker! Gloss black Performance pack Ecoboost with a manual transmission. We added staggered 20" 5-spoke TSW wheels, Eibach suspension, MMD rear spoiler, gloss black blank trunk panel, and red accents on the roof, wheels, and front lip. It's a bold look that pairs well with a bold Mustang. For those that have followed our builds over the years know that we usually include exhaust systems by Borla Performance on almost all of our GT Mustangs. None of the builds so far include any type of exhaust modifications. There are 2 reasons for this. The first and most prominent reason is that the 2018 Mustangs come with a loud exhaust from the factory. When we start them up, everyone always asks what exhaust we have put on, and all are surprised to hear that the sound they are hearing is completely stock. The 2nd reason plays off the first, and that is that Borla has yet to produce a new system for the 2018 models. They have bounced the idea of making their touring system quieter than stock for those that prefer a more mellow tone, but nothing is for sure yet. Their products are always well thought out and the quality is always top notch, so we will patiently wait to see what they come up with. Many more builds in the future will come out of the VFR garage, and we are always excited for the next unique look. Be sure to check out our entire inventory of VFR vehicles at www.vistaoxnard.com or feel free to contact me directly at socialmedia@vistaauto.com.

NHRA Mello Yello ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY TED LIGHTHIZER

This year’s NHRA Mello Yello Finals at Auto Club Raceway Pomona, CA held on 11-12-2017 was non-stop action and drama from start to finish. Three of the 4 NHRA pro racing classes had yet to crown their World Champions for 2017, those being: Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock. Only Pro Stock Motorcycle World Champion was won by four time winner Eddie Karwiec last month at The Strip in Las Vegas, NV. Side note, both Alexis DeJoria, Top Fuel driver and Allen Johnson, Pro Stock driver announced they will no longer be racing in the NHRA Mello Yello series after the 2017 season. For only the second time in NHRA history, a female won the Top Fuel World Championship and this year it’s Brittany Force, daughter of sixteen time Funny Car Champion John Force. Brittany, who was also the No. 1 qualifier, raced to victory at the season ending event by defeating Shawn Langdon with a 3.668 pass at 330.07 when he smoked the tires in the final round. It was great to see Brittany acknowledge her fans on her way back up the track after beating Langdon. Robert Hight won the Funny Car World Championship by racing his Auto Club of Southern California Chevy Camaro Funny Car to a 3.839 second pass at 332.51mph to defeat Tim Wilkerson, who smoked the tires at the starting line. Bo Butner won his first NHRA Mello Yello Pro Stock World Championship by driving his Jim Butner’s Auto Chevrolet Camaro to a 6.594 pass at 210.70

Lightning Twice Struck ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY JAMES STANLEY

On a rare occasion, we may see a Ford F-150 Lightning out on the road. Some are in like-new condition, and others on their last leg. No matter which one passes us on the road, they catch our attention. The whine of the supercharger from the under the hood paired to a big American V8 is the 'sound of our people'. The styling of the last generation Lightning while beginning to show its age, has a muscular, yet sleek look and still looks great at any car show. For many of us, this truck was the tuck that we aspired one day to own. As with many great performance vehicles of every make, the Lightning was discontinued in 2002 after a very short four year run. The 5.4L Supercharged Triton V8 put out ~360 horsepower and a beefy ~440 lb/ft of torque. By today's standards, this may seem a bit low, but for the day, was more powerful than many muscle cars available. A lower stance versus a standard F-150 and tuned suspension helped keep this pickup planted in corners and a plethora of SVT goodies could be found all around the truck including a 2-tone interior, color-matched grill and bumpers, and one of the

28

most iconic features was the dual-tip side-exit exhaust. Today, SVT has redirected their F-150 efforts into the incredible F-150 Raptor which has dominated the off-road segment for years. Where does that leave those of us who love sport trucks? After seeing Pioneer Ford in Bremen, GA create a 'Lightning Tribute' 2017 F-150 last year, I decided to take on the challenge of creating a VFR version of the Lightning with the 2018 F-150. The build started with a rendering and much back and forth between those of us on the VFR team on what would be the the right parts and modifications to bring back the look and feeling of the previous two Lightnings. We decided to special order a new 2018 exactly how we wanted it, with the features we wanted, and with the drivetrain we thought would be best. We special ordered our truck with the following specs: - 2018 F-150 XL | Regular Cab | Short Bed | 122" Wheelbase | 4x2 - 5.0L Coyote V8 (Yes, the same one found in the Mustang) - Electronic 10-speed Transmission and sport mode - Tow Package for the 3.55 Electronic Locking Axle Ratio - 101A with XL Sport Appearance Package - LED Side-Mirror Spotlights

Once our truck order was placed, we ordered the parts we would need to complete the build. "I was excited to get this truck into service since I knew it would be a great seller." said Sid Engle, VFR Parts Specialist. We were all excited to see this build come to life. Once it arrived, we started on it immediately and started its transformation. First up on the list was to get the suspension in order. Our choice was Beltech suspension which gave the truck a 2"/5" Drop and greatly improved cornering stability. The stock 18" wheels were swapped for 22" KMC KM702 Deuce wheels wrapped in some sticky rubber. The exhaust was changed out to a MBRP side exit exhaust with black tips for performance, and sound. The real icing on the cake was the custom design Katzkin leather in two-tone black and gray with F-150 embroidered in white to pay tribute to the last generation Lightning. We stood back once the truck was done and it still seemed like it was missing something. We went back to the digital drawing board and started swapping parts on screen to see if we could capture more of the essence of the Lightning. It came down the grill. The original grill that came with the truck was the standard dual bar design in all textured black plastic. This didn't really fit with the Lightning recipe. We didn't have to look far to find the right grill since we were able to order one from our own parts department. We

decided on the 2018 F-150 STX grill which has a color matched surround and honeycomb black mesh grill which truly looks like something the designers at SVT would choose. The original Ford emblem in the grill seemed a little small and lost in the large void of black honeycomb, so we opted for the much larger Super duty Ford emblem. We stepped back and took a look after it was installed and we knew that it was complete. I was more than eager to take it out for its maiden voyage around the streets around the dealership and I was first impressed by the suppleness of the Katzkin leather. The original cloth, while sturdy and functional, lacked any real comfort. This was no longer an issue. The two-tone leather matches the rest of the interior perfectly and give the entire interior a feeling of being of a much higher trim level. With a turn of the key, the engine roared out of the sideexit exhaust and everyone in the shop turned to take a look. 'IT’S ALIVE!' I thought to myself. Driving off the lot and down the street, people were turning to look at our latest creation. If the styling doesn’t catch your attention, then the sound of the 5.0L Coyote V8 will. I was truly impressed with this truck more and more, and not only for its style and sound. I didn’t know what to expect with a 10-Speed transmission, and I wasn’t sure what to fully expect with the truck as a whole. Once I got to the freeway onramp, I took the opportunity to test 29

the acceleration. I pressed down on the gas pedal, and the trans-mission immediately responded with a quick and firm downshift to 3rd from 7th, ,the exhaust roared and the truck leapt forward. The acceleration was … nostalgic. Now when I say nostalgic, I don’t mean slow be any means. This may be one of the fastest vehicles on the lot, but there is something forgotten, yet familiar about how this truck drives. It took me a while to figure out what it was that I was feeling. I know the new Mustang is faster, but this truck just felt faster, like it couldn’t get out of its own way fast enough. I later realized that it was the old style of drivetrain versus new. This was set up more like a muscle car than most late model muscle cars. It’s body-on-frame construction with a solid rear axle, and a naturally aspirated V8. It’s a classic combination. This feeling has been lost in many of the newer “muscle cars” with independent rear suspension, space frame construction, and boosted 4 cylinders and V6’s. This truck will paste a smile on your face every time you start it. It's a truly visceral experience. Final power numbers put it very close to the last generation Lightning with ~400 horsepower, 400 ft/lb of torque, but with the addition of the 10-speed transmission and the electronic locking rear end, the acceleration is sure to perform well above its class. I encourage you to come out a take a look at our tribute to the F-150 Lightning. Let us know how we did, or even take it home. Either way, we are proud of this build. And we love to show it off. Or even perhaps it will make an appearance at a Supercar Sunday in the near future.
