FROM THE EDITOR A

L E T T E R

B Y D U S T I N T R OYA N

Enough is never enough, sounds like a James Bond movie title. But, enough is never enough. When I am that old man, will I look back in the last chapter of my life and say, I did enough, helped enough, learned enough, tried hard enough, had enough adventure, and so on. In the evenings, I watch action sports videos with my kids. Watching these guys surf bigger and bigger waves, climb the steepest mountains, try different daring things, they all know the risks, and they are willing to put it out there..why? Because they can, because they have to and because they are pushing the edge of what we believe is capable of human beings. If you told surfers thirty years ago someone would surf an almost 80 foot wave they would not believe it. That someone would ascend up El Capitan in just over two hours and so on and so forth. There is always someone pushing hard, going further and creating something new and innovative. That adventure that takes humanity to a higher level, that invention that revolutionizes our lives, that writer that changes the world with words or that artist that inspires us through their work, where do we, I, you, fit within the world. What are you going to do? Theoretically, I am halfway through my life. I am forty-two. I have had a lot of fun. I have been a few places, gotten hurt, escaped serious damage a few times, blessed to have a wonderful family and friends, but, I need to do more. I need to be more creative. I need to feel danger, I need to achieve. My biggest fear is looking back and saying I didn’t do this or that. And at forty-two...the clock is ticking.

Another new year. How wonderful. If you are reading this, you made it too, congratulations. The question is, what are you going to do in this new year. What are you going to do?

I am sure that if I go back to other “letters from the editor” that I have written, there might be a similar sentiment about not doing enough. I don’t ever think I do enough. Probably comes from my mom and dad, but you never want to be that person. That person that gave up. So, 2018 is here in about a week. My kids are getting bigger, my hair is thinning, I really need to get radical in 2018.

I was sitting having frozen yogurt with my two daughters in Calabasas the other day. It was Christmas Eve, around 3pm. A guy with his one year old and four year old daughters. Most people walked by and smiled. The little one has chocolate all over her face and the four year old is enjoying hers by herself. The Gelson’s shopping center was buzzing as people were getting their last minute needs for their Christmas dinners. So many people walked by us. We were probably there for about an hour or so. It was nice to sit down and relax with the kids. December is a busy month.

Getting radical. That is indeed what I need. If I were being honest with myself, I am nowhere near the “getting radical” shape. I could be if I listened to that old man and set some goals and stuck to them. Not rocket science I suppose, but a choice. To be mediocre or radical. I really don't want to look back and say that I was not doing my best in every criterium.

As we were getting ready to leave an elderly gentleman, very well dressed, walks up and looks at me and the kids and says, “Enjoy every moment...” That got us talking. I always find it interesting when someone says that as I know they want to share some wisdom or a story about their kids or their grandkids. This man was no different than others. He started telling me how fast life goes and how at eighty-seven, he has kids and grandkids. How he worked in Detroit, a couple of jobs at a time. How he never told a lie and how he became successful. His memoirs in a moment, I suppose.

That old man, just a week before the new year, he decided to rattle my cage. I probably needed it. I just hope that I am smart enough to recognize the gift he was sharing with me. Perhaps he thought I looked like I needed a pep-talk, or a bit wornout or he saw the kids and wanted the best for me any my family. Perhaps decades ago, someone said the same thing to him and he absorbed, processed and then began to set goals. He went for it. Once he achieved his goal, he set a new one and like that guy surfing that big wave, he acclimated to the stress, the currents, the danger. Like that rock climber he prepared and walking up walls became second nature. Most importantly they believed it possible, they trained hard, the lived it, they dreamed it, and they did it. They had goals. To be the best, the fastest, ride the biggest, be the biggest success in their endeavors.

As his wife sat in the car and we chatted for about twenty minutes. He was very kind to share principles and stories about what he felt led to his successes. Hard work, honesty, taking calculated chances, but he kept going back to how short life is. How special it is and living a good clean life is important. His wife, sitting in the car, they had been together forever. She knew that she was going to be sitting there for a while. Sounds familiar...just ask my wife. I find moments like these interesting. I love learning from people. He had opened with how he was in the final chapter of his life, he has had a good life and I knew he wanted to share something with me. I asked him, what is your key to success, what allowed you to get where you needed to go? He smiled and said, “Set goals and don't stop." He said that "if you fall down, get back up and keep going." "Keep going like you have no other choice. " But, he reiterated, "having goals." "You must set goals and achieve them and then set more goals."

Well old man, two days later I am still thinking about your advice. I am sharing it. Time to set some goals. Thank you old man. Thank you for taking the time, for caring and for the push. You know this, but life is about sharing inspiration with others, a true gift. We will live on with all of those we have inspired as I am sure they too will pass on their inspiration. Set your goals. Move toward them. Don’t stop. See you at the top.

Although he was well dressed, he was not overdressed. He was confident, yet subtle. He never went into what he did for a living but he kind of had this “air” of being very successful and understated. It was a wonderful conversation. It was perfect for Christmas Eve, sitting there with my two girls.

Wishing you all the best in 2018.

Success, the future, setting goals, all topics that start flying around this time of year. Something about a revolution around the sun and a lot of marketing that makes us think it is time to make a change and set a goal. The once a year... “I am going to...” So I am sitting here thinking what am I going to do differently? Or am I on a hamster wheel and I am going to do everything that I keep doing, the same way I do it? It kind of works, but, is it enough? Simply said, the answer is that it is not. It never will be. Perhaps it shouldn't be. 5

Irwindale Event Center Announces January 31, 2018 as Final Date of Operation Irwindale, Calif. (August 9, 2017 - 6:00PM PDT) Team 211 Entertainment' CEO Jim Cohan today announced that the owners of the Irwindale Event Center property have set the date for the center's last day of operation. "We were notified this week by the owner's representative that January 31, 2018 will be our final day on the Irwindale property," Cohan said. "First and foremost, everyone should know that we'll continue to operate Irwindale Event Center right up to our final weeks, as we've been doing for the past five years; providing great family motorsports and related entertainment in the most professional way possible," he went on. "Our full 2017 schedule of NASCAR, Drag Strip, LA Racing Experience events, and special events will run as published. And, in fact, we're planning on adding a couple of extra events to the calendar to honor all of the competitors who raced and wrenched here at Irwindale since it opened in 1999." "In all honesty, we were here and in it for the long haul, in fact we were in the process of putting out our complete schedule for the 2018 season. All that made this news very difficult for me to hear, and very hard on our whole team. Cohan went on to thank all of the many sponsors, and supporters who worked with the facility over the years, "Without them, we would have never been able to do what we've done. I won't name them all here but they all deserve a huge amount credit for this place still being around. They've believed in us and we've believed in them ... those partnerships have meant a great deal to everyone involved." Cohan also thanked the many motorsports sanctioning bodies that chose Irwindale as the site of numerous major events over the years, saying, "Their confidence in our abilities was a high compliment for us, we always tried to make each show better than the last one. That's just the way all of our people are wired. And ...we'd be somewhat amiss if we didn't mention our friends in the City of Irwindale, and working with them to have an event center that everyone involved with could be proud of." "In the end I'm most proud of our whole extended team right across the board; they're a very dedicated group of people who picked up what was left when the original operators left in 2012. Working together these people rebuilt this facility's reputation as one of the finest short tracks in the country, a great stock car driving experience, and an exciting street legal drag strip. I'm the one who is most often quoted; but they're the team that did all the work." Cohan concluded, "I simply want everyone out there to understand that this team is going to work just as hard to keep this a great fan-friendly facility running strong all the way until midnight January 30, 2018. We all wish that we could have given our racers many more than the five years we were able to and sincerely hope that we entertained all of our guests along the way..." Irwindale Event Center is comprised of a 6,000-seat twin track NASCAR stadium that opened in March of 1999 and an NHRA-sanctioned eighth/mile drag strip that followed a year later. In addition the center is home to the LA Racing Experience, one of the most popular stock car driving schools in the country, as well as Advanced Driving Dynamics, a hands-on safety course taught on the facility's huge parking lot that helps drivers develop their reactions and confidence for everyday driving. Many other well-known events have called Irwindale home over the years including the X Games, Formula Drift and Global Rallycross, along with concerts, and hundreds of feature film, TV, and commercial shoots. THE END OF AN ICON

“As I roll into the water box, I know she isn’t running right. The idle is rougher then normal, but I press in the line lock button and hit the gas. The engine lets out a roar and the rear slicks spin as smoke begins to fill the air. In the corner of my eye I can see smoke coming out from the side of the intake manifold. This isn’t normal, but I’m fully committed and I lift off the gas and slowly roll into the staging lights. As all drag racers know, each time down the drag strip is a crapshoot. You can have your car set up perfectly, but for whatever reasons, things can go wrong quickly. I bump into the pre-stage light and hit the switch for the two-step. I bump in again into the staging light and smash my gas pedal to the floor. As the last amber bulb lights, I launch forward and fly down the track. But as I reach halftrack, a huge plume of smoke comes from out of the intake manifold. In slow motion, I see the oil filler cap shoot up around a hundred feet in the air in front of me. I lift off the gas pedal and shut her down. Little did I know this would be the last time I would ever race down Irwindale drag strip. On January 30, 2018 Irwindale drag strip will be officially closing. This information was first announced in August 2017 at the last Summit Drag Racing Series race of the season at Irwindale to all the competing racers. As we all stood there and listened in disbelief, we can only think that this was another joke like the previous years. Unfortunately, it wasn’t. Here’s a little history on this iconic track: In 1965, a new strip was built next to the 210 freeway in Irwindale. One of the owners/builders was Harry Snider, the founder of In-N-Out burgers. The old Irwindale was quite well known among locals for having the best track burgers anywhere (they were In-N-Out burgers without the tomato). This is where Steve Gibbs got his first full-time job, and by 1968 they asked him to be track manager. He noted, “Lots of cars went off in the rocks at the top end.” Lefty Mudersbach was killed there in 1966. Irwindale was a track that definitely died as a result of local development. In 1977 the city of Irwindale bought the property and basically gave it to the Miller Brewing Co. The huge brewery that sits there now certainly makes more income for Irwindale than the track did. Gibbs quipped, “Lions went first, then Irwindale, then OCIR.”The Irwindale Event Center (a.k.a. Irwindale Speedway and Irwindale Drag strip opened on March 27, 1999 under the official name Irwindale Speedway. Toyota purchased the naming rights to the facility in 2008, and from that time until 2011 it was also known as the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale. The speedway features banked, paved 1/2- and 1/3-mile oval tracks and a 1/8-mile NHRA sanctioned drag strip where the Summit Drag Racing Series is held. From its opening until 2011 it was primarily used for Nascar races and NHRA drag racing events. In late 2011, NASCAR announced it was dropping Toyota Speedway from its schedule. The company that manages the track, Irwindale Speedway LLC, filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy on February 13, 2012. In January 2013, it was announced that the track would be re-opening as the Irwindale Event Center. In 2015, plans were made to demolish Irwindale Speedway and build an outlet mall on the site of the track. As of 2016, the track is still open for business. On August 9, 2017 it was officially announced that as of January 31, 2018, Jim Cohan, CEO of Team 211 Entertainment, who operates the track under the name of Irwindale Event Center, would cease operation. The report however does not state what the future of the track is. So there you have it. Another So Cal drag strip is shutting down. As you read this article, there are only four weeks left for this iconic track. I’ve been fortunate enough to race at this strip for five years in The Summit Drag Racing Series. I’ve met countless friends and have so many great memories there. I hope all of you make it out there to one of the last open track nights on Thursdays from 5:00pm to 10:00pm to run your vehicle down the strip. Unfortunately I already ran my last race and I definitely went out with a bang!

New Construction Anyone?

With the lack of inventory in today’s real estate market, it can be frustrating to be a home buyer right now. But if you’re looking for a newly constructed home, you may be in luck. Permits are the best indicator of how many newly built homes will rise over the next months and according to the latest residential sales report released by the US Census Bureau and the US Department of Housing & Urban Development, permits were up between 5.7% and 8.5% over July and August of 2016. Chief Economist Danielle Hale of Realtor.com says “Eventually, the pickup in single family home construction will mean (buyers) will have more options. Especially with the limited number of sales right now, more options are really needed”. When given the choice between brand-new or used homes, statistically the majority of buyers choose new. And, since there are two sides to every story, here are some pros and cons you might want to consider when thinking about new construction:

Pros:

· You'll have the ability to either work with the builder to create your own custom home or to potentially upgrade finishes to add your own personal touches. · Your maintenance costs within the first several years should be low since everything from appliances to the HVAC system and roof are brand new. · Additionally, builders offer a 1-year warranty and some offer up to a 10-year warranty. “Smart” technology options allow you to automate internet, cable, speakers and even an alarm system. · And new homes often use low- and zero-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints and building materials, improving indoor air quality.

Cons:

· Brand new homes can cost more – sometimes up to 20% more than a similar existing home. · New homes are often built on smaller lots than most older homes. Because the landscaping will be new, it can often take years to grow into itself. · Finally, one of the big disadvantages of new construction is that most undeveloped land is away from city centers. You may, therefore, have to consider a longer commute in making your decision.

My 'G-Ma's' Gift

ARTICLE AND PHOTOS SUBMITTED BY STEVE ELLIS

There are certain things that I thought growing up, that would ALWAYS be there. Michael Jackson & his music, cheap gas (mind you I’m from Texas, so it’s still cheap compared to California), Toys R Us, BlockBuster, etc. One of those things, or people I should say, that I thought would always be there was my grandmother. I was young when my father’s parents passed, so I unfortunately only have small memories of them, and my mother’s father passed when I was a baby. Now my mother’s mom, known as ‘G-Ma’, was the person who I always knew would be around. She taught EVERY grandchild how to play basketball, and when I say this lady could hoop with the best of them, I’d put my money on her before Kobe Bryant or Lebron James. She could cook some of the best dishes I’d ever tasted, which is partially one of the reasons I enjoy cooking, she raised a large family, made sure we all knew education and knowledge were among the most important things, as well as had a heart as big as the moon, and made of pure gold. She sent me birthday cards, since the day I was born, and was my pen pal, who was probably the only person I regularly wrote letters to. Not that I’m saying my grandmother is better than anyone elses, as all of our grandparents have their own unique and loving stories in our lives, I guess I’m trying to say that even though it’s been a year, I just really miss her a lot, and more and more everyday. As time tends to do, time flew by. I started focusing on my acting career, and eventually moved to Los Angeles. Even still, she wrote me letters, would call me, never forgot a birthday, and always told me that she knew she’d see me on TV, and in movies soon. I believe she did see my national commercial for Honda, but unfortunately the first film I was in, didn’t come out until after she passed. When my mother called me, and told me that G-Ma wasn’t doing well, I guess I didn’t understand the depth of it. The most lively person I’ve ever known, who managed a garden, mowed her grass on a tractor, drove a Chrysler 300C SRT, and was also known to grab her shotgun to shoot snakes in the yard, seemed like she’d always be. I started to write a letter to her, but I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t want to write a letter of sadness, I wanted to write a letter to make her feel better, let her know I loved her, and encourage her to get better…….but I wasn’t able to get 12

my letter to her before she died. At her burial site, I placed the letter I had started to write in her coffin, because I was going to make sure that, no matter what, she got my last letter. One of my fondest memories is driving around her land in a 1966 Ford Mustang coupe that belonged to my grandfather. At the time the Mustang was a carolina blue color, and I could barely see over the dash. She’d let me start it up, drive it out and around the land, and it was the first car that I learned to do donuts in. Every time that I went to visit her, I knew I’d see that car and knew that no questions asked, she’d let me drive it. I didn’t know that in her will she’d end up leaving the Mustang to me. I guess being the only car fanatic in the family, she thought I’d be best suited to have it. I grew up with Japanese imports, guess you can say I am the result of a Fast and the Furious teenage, wide eyed, upbringing. I’ve dreamt of Toyota Supra’s, Nissan Skyline’s, drifting the mountains of Akagi, and reaching 200mph on the Wangan, my last thought was what I’d do with a 66’ Mustang coupe. As I’ve grown older, I’ve watched the classic car market, listened to a few car collectors, and have developed an understanding of car value. Everyone knows the fastback Mustang is the desired body, as for the coupe’s, well they are a dime a dozen. What all that knowledge doesn’t account for is sentimental value. Part of me, would like to have the car fully restored to it’s mint pony interior, Sauterne Gold, and have the drivetrain rebuilt to roadworthy conditions, but then again, I know that it’s not a car that I’ve always wanted, and would possibly be better in the hands of someone who appreciates the classic Mustang. The other part says it’s a gift from my grandmother that should remain in the family, and should be cherished. No matter what I end up doing with the car, I know that I loved her, and that she was one of the most important people in my life, and she’d want me to be happy. If you still have your grandparents, parents, siblings, close friends, let me remind you to tell them you love them, and let them know how much they mean to you. Time will come for us all at some point, so remember to live for the now, instead of thinking that you’ll get around to it eventually.

Probably one of the most recognizable logos is the STP insignia. Any kid who grew up in the late 60’s had a STP sticker stuck on their notebook or bicycle seat. The STP sticker was born out of a marketing phenomenon called “Contingency Sponsorship”. Common in all forms of automobile racing, this is a form of sponsorship whereby race teams place a sticker/decal on their vehicle from companies in exchange for awards for winning or meeting certain performance goals. These awards can be money or free equipment. Today, racing stickers are called decals, however in the late 50’s a decal was a thin film with a printed image. You would drop the decal in water and slide the image off the paper backing, being careful to eliminate bubbles from the surface it was applied to. A glue backing would dry and bond the decal to its surface. In the early 60’s the sticker was born. The sticker was a thin sheet of vinyl with a printed logo that had a selfadhesive backing. They were much easier to apply than a water-slide decal.

would stop what he was doing, wipe off his hands, go to his tool box and pull out some sort of automotive product sticker. Yes, they actually gave them out for “free.”

As creative as times were in the 60’s, just like album covers, racing stickers evolved. They became colorful and used creative artwork. They were something that you just did not want to put on the fender of a racecar. They were free advertising that ended up on book covers, lockers and pickup truck rear windows. Back then, there was a gas station on every corner. Kids would ride up and stop the poor mechanic who was busy turning wrenches, and ask if he had any stickers. Usually the guy 13

Today, many a man cave, tool box, or refrigerator door are adorned with classic stickers and decals. Original vintage racing stickers can be found on eBay; some going for as much as $50.00 each. Perhaps you will recognize some of these. The modern era contingency decals definitely lack the creativity that was put into the stickers of the past. The enthusiasm, however, remains. Drive by any school and you’ll see kids with automotive stickers, and other products, all over their notebooks.

1. Disabled Parking Placards

NEW LAWS FOR

2018

It's a new year which means there are a few new laws that went into effect of which every driver should be aware. Some of these laws have made headlines , others you may have heard nothing of, and some may be new laws that you thought were already in place. Well, here you can see the new laws that apply to many, if not all motorists. There may be more, and laws may change depending on your state and local governments, but this will get you started off on the right foot for 2018. *This is meant as a general guide, and you should always check with your local law enforcement for proper guidance for all law related questions that you may have about this article.

- Those applying for a disabled parking placard will be required to provide proof of their name and birthdate. The law also limits the number of replacement placards one can request without obtaining a medical certification to four in two years.

2. Cannabis Use

- Cannabis use in vehicles prohibits smoking or ingesting marijuana or marijuana products while driving or riding as passenger. Penalties could be a severe as it is for drunk driving.

3. Ridesharing Drivers

- Beginning July 1, it will be unlawful for a person to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.04 percent or more when a passenger is in the vehicle. This will mean that drivers of a passenger for hire, in their personal vehicles, will be held to a higher standard of safety while transporting people. The DMV will suspend a person’s driver license if a conviction is added to their record.

4. Buses and Seatbelts

- Beginning July 1, this law requires a passenger on a bus equipped with seatbelts to be properly restrained by a safety belt. This law also prohibits a parent, guardian, or chartering party to transport on a bus, or permit to be transported on a bus, a child who is at least 8 years of age but under 16, unless they are properly restrained by a safety belt.

5. Parking Tickets

- Unpaid parking violations for registration or driver license renewal now allows low-income Californians with outstanding parking violations to repay fines and penalties prior to the parking violation being reported to the DMV.

6. Motorcycles

- This law authorizes the DMV to accept a certificate of satisfactory completion of any motorcyclist-training program approved by the CHP in lieu of the required motorcycle skills test. Applicants for an original motorcycle license or motorcycle endorsement under 21 years of age continue to be required to complete a novice motorcyclist-training program.

7. Pedestrians

- A pedestrian can begin crossing an intersection while facing a traffic signal displaying a flashing “DON’T WALK” or “Upraised Hand” symbol if the traffic signal includes a countdown timer and the pedestrian can complete the crossing before the signal goes to a steady “DON’T WALK” or “Upraised Hand.”

8. Higher Auto Fees

- The DMV will begin collecting at the time of registration or renewal extra fees ranging from $25 to $175, based on the vehicle’s current value. Money goes to fix state roads.

Heirloom ASA

A forgotten branch of the Ferrari tree lives on in a family's little coupē

ARTICLE BY & PHOTOS BY RAFAEL DINNER

Remember riding in your dad’s sports car as a kid? Stretching your neck to see over the dash, you plug your ears as the engine roars to life. The smell of the old vinyl interior is masked by exhaust fumes. Once you bump cautiously out of the driveway, he lets out the clutch, and you’re off ! You can feel the road slipping by a few inches beneath your seat. Thirty-five years ago, my seat was the luggage bench in the back. Now, I’ve graduated to the driver’s seat, and my own son is outgrowing the cramped space back there.

The Ferrarina

My dad’s car turns out to be a rarity. The ASA 1000 GT began as Enzo Ferrari’s project around 1959, nicknamed the “Ferrarina”. His goal was to produce a scaled-down Ferrari at a scaled-down price (an idea later revived in the Dino marque). Ultimately, Maranello decided not to make the car under its name, licensing production to Oronzio de Nora, who formed a new company, ASA (Autocostruzioni Società per Azioni), in Milan. Prototypes were shown in ’61 and ’62, with production from ’64 to ’67. Around 50 coupés were built, as well as a few convertibles and racing variants. Mine is a ’66 with the memorable VIN “01234”. The car was a commercial flop, arguably too expensive at $6000 imported to the US, and the company folded. Despite its modest ambitions and failure to achieve them, the ASA showcases some of the great Italian car designers of that golden era of Gran Turismo in the early ’60s. First to strike your eye is the simple beauty of that fastback body. Even the dash has shapely curves. My dad would point out that the

16

design, by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro working for Bertone, was unconstrained by modern considerations such as crash test requirements. Even so, not everyone could sculpt like that—Giugiaro was later dubbed “Car Designer of the Century”. The ASA shares curves with some of his other early sculptures including his one-off Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Speciale, the Iso Grifo, and the original Maserati Ghibli. The body rides on a tubular chassis designed by Giotto Bizzarrini. Under the hood, the ASA is decidedly scaled down from its bigger Ferrari brethren, with a 4-cylinder, one-liter engine (hence ASA “1000” GT). That said, the engine is derived from Gioacchino Colombo’s 250 V12, and cranks out 95 bhp at 7000 rpm—an exceptional power-to-displacement ratio. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a 4-speed synchromesh manual transmission with an electric overdrive on gears 3 and 4. The engine block looks small compared to the transmission underneath! The lack of raw power means that I need to get above 4000 RPM or so for the acceleration to pick up, but it’s a fun car to drive, being small and responsive, with good road feel.

Sweet home, Chicago

Bewitched by its body design, my dad fell in love with the ASA at the Chicago Auto Show at McCormick Place, where it was shown by importer Luigi Chinetti. My dad decided to purchase his ASA at the factory in Milan: At $4000, he saved some money, even with shipping costs. You’ll see the original Italian license plates in the photos: The “EE” indicates a temporary plate on a vehicle for export. He and my mom made a vacation out of it, ending up at the port of Seville, where he had it shipped down the Guadalquivir River, across the Atlantic and up the Saint Lawrence River. He garaged it at my child-

hood home in Chicago until 2015, at which point he passed it to me. I had it transported to Los Angeles, and tuned up by Santo’s Italian Car Service. This car would interest the historians out there. It has never been restored, has 25k miles on the odometer, and is nearly all original, including the paint, interior, and accessories (manuals, tools... even a key fob). The body does attest to its use on the roads of Illinois early in its life, with some rust behind the wheel wells. Rust also claimed the original exhaust pipes, and the replacements are not quite accurate. Of course, I don’t drive on 50-year-old Pirelli tires, but I did retain one for the record. It’s not often that a single car is viewed by the same person with both a child’s visceral wonder and an adult’s intellectual appreciation. To the 6-year-old me, the spring-loaded ashtray lid was fascinating. As an adult, I see that many of those interior parts were sourced from contemporary, international vendors and are not unique to the ASA. Rather, it’s the car’s unique design that evokes a golden era in Italian automotive history. And in my brain, there’s a unique place for the smell of old vinyl and the sound of that little Ferrari engine roaring to life.

If you’d like more information, and in particular if you know of other extant ASAs, please get in touch! I occasionally bring the ASA to Supercar Sunday in Woodland Hills, and the annual “Best of France and Italy” show in Van Nuys.

TOYS-R-US ARTICLE BY DUSTIN TROYAN Photos by MATTHEW DUCLOS

The annual Motor4Toys Toys-R-Us run was a huge success. More than ten years ago, Justin Friedman thought it would be a lot of fun to get together with other car enthusiasts and cruise over to the local Toys-R-Us the week before Motor4Toys and buy toys as a group. Since then, we have caravanned from Supercar Sunday to Toys-R-Us, where we are greeted with arranged VIP parking for the cars. Once everyone arrives and gets parked we grab shopping carts and file into the store leaving no isle unoccupied! Each cart is overfilled with toys, hand chosen by each driver. Many of us have done this for so many years, it has become a tradition for us and our families. Looking around at each other’s carts, we can’t help but smile as we check out each other’s selection of toys

18

S TOY RUN 2017 and imagine the joy they will bring to child in only a few short weeks. There is something quite special about walking into a toy store with so many friends and buying toys for children in need. Everyone has so much fun, smiling, laughing, and hugging as we walk through the store picking out our favorite toys. It’s truly a magical feeling and it really helps get us all into the holiday spirit. After we are done shopping, we take a big group photo to commemorate the event and it’s then an all-out social media blitz for the Motor4Toys Car Show the following week. What a great tradition! Thank you to everyone who came along and we will see you next year!

PORSCHE GT2 RS

The Most Expensive & Most Powerful 911 Ever ARTICLE BY DUSTIN TROYAN | PHOTOS BY PORSCHE

"GT2 RS", say it out loud and it sounds like magic to an enthusiast. The reason for it sounding like magic is simple; it is! A rare and truly exciting vehicle launched almost a decade ago, and shortly thereafter, went into hiding. Well, for 2018 she is back and she is back with a vengeance. The 2018 GT2 RS is the most powerful Porsche 911 built for the street, ever. It's easy to argue that this car is for the track only with 700 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. This is a race car that somehow you can drive on the street, if you dare. With a zero to sixty time at the 2.7 second mark and being an extremely light weight car, you will rocket to 211mph faster than any other 911 in history. Porsche has taken the 3.6L flat six, sprinkled it with go fast dust and added larger turbos to achieve the 700 horsepower mark. Porsche also has included a cooling system that sprays distilled water onto the intercoolers to lower air-intake temperatures. Denser air equals more horsepower, and Porsche has done everything to squeeze this power-plant for every last pony. Porsche is particularly proud of the 7-speed PDK dual clutch automatic transmission that is always “in the power." I am not sure if the word would be linear as far as the power delivery, but it is reported to always be in the right torque range and extremely efficient. With a huge rubber footprint, the 21 inch rear tires and 20 inch front tires are married to the ground. The rear axle steering helps keep you pointed in the direction you want to go and the giant carbon-ceramic brakes stop you fast. Weighing in at 3241 pounds, this GT2 RS is a heavyweight champion in lightweight body. Technology, materials, innovation and racing heritage have created a contender to the supercar world that will be tough to beat. With Porsche performance and reliability, you can be the fastest at the track and on the street, if you can drive. Rumors are that 500 examples will be produced with an asking price of $294,250.00. The GT2 RS price will go up quickly for a highly optioned vehicle. But, this track prepped car will be an instant classic and you may as well check every box. Option it well, drive is sparingly and it will do better than Bitcoin. For more information on the 2018 GT2 RS, please contact Keith Goldberg at Rusnak Porsche www.porschewestlake.com

ARTICLE BY DUSTIN TROYAN

The 14th Annual Motor4Toys was a huge success. With tens of thousands of toys collected the day of the car show and tens of thousands collected after at various other toys drives, we may have a record breaking year. As the toy drive goes all month long, we are still picking up toys and dropping them off as this is being written. We will not have final numbers, but, it is looking to be an incredible year. Thank you so very much. What is Motor4Toys? People. I think that is one of the things that we are so proud of. From the presenting sponsors including; The Auto Gallery, Coastline Motorsport, Lavaggio-the art of auto detailing and HRE Wheels, to the support cast of sponsor, Anthem Blue Cross, LAPD, Councilman Bob Blumenfield, and a huge amount of volunteers, Motor4Toys is the people. It is you, me, the entire car community and then there are the schools, businesses, clubs and other organizations that support Motor4Toys. Can you imagine how far we have all come together?! We are far beyond the $5,000,000 in toys collected over thirteen years of doing Motor4Toys. Your dedication to the event and toy drive has proven to be fruitful beyond expectations. Thank you so very much. We could not do it without you all. Every single one of you. Every toy counts,

every dollar counts and we help so many children, it is incredible. And proudly, Motor4Toys operates at 100% charity. There are no salaries, all volunteer. We love it! So... for the 2018 event, we are looking to shake things up a bit. We are rolling around different ideas, but if it all comes together, we are going to surprise you and exceed all of your expectations! And then some! So please save the date of Sunday, December 2nd, 2018. The Fifteenth Annual Motor4Toys Charity Car Show and Toy Drive. Fifteen years! Who knew it would get this big. Here is what we ask of you for 2018: Please start talking to your business partners, your school district, your clubs, your organizations, can we do a toy drive with you/them? Can you be a sponsor at the event? Can you donate to the 2018 Toy Drive? We are going to try to make 2018 a breakthrough year and see if we can lay a foundation to get to 100,000 toys by our fifteenth year. Imagine how incredible that would be. If we imagine it, we can do it. Let’s do it! Thank you to everyone who has made Motor4Toys what it has become. Every single person. Thank you so much! You are Motor4Toys and we do make a difference! Now let’s rock 2018! www.motor4toys.com

Chaminade ARTICLE BY DUSTIN TROYAN

Chaminade College Preparatory in West Hills partnered with Motor4Toys for their first ever Motor4Toys Toy Drive. It was such a huge success on so many levels. It all started when I ran into Brendan Barlow at the Lamborghini Dealership. He introduced himself and explained that he had been coming to Supercar Sunday since he was eight or so. That before he got his license he would ride his bike to the show to take pictures. One of his many talents, he is an aspiring photographer and he loves cars. Quite the passionate young man. What I didn’t know is that Brendan is also the Founder of the Chaminade Car Club. He is following his passions and in my opinion, doing quite well. In any event, we got to talking and I saw the Chaminade logo on his shirt and asked if he thought we could do a Motor4Toys Toy Drive at the school. He smiled and said he would try to get it done. He said he loved the idea, that he would let me know. Months passed and one day my phone rings, Brendan says “it’s a done deal.” I was shocked. I met with him and the school and everybody was on board. Brendan and the Chaminade Car Club would spearhead the Motor4Toys Toy Drive and for every 50 toys brought

in, we would then show up on a certain day with one cool car, per fifty toys collected. A little motivation for the students. About a month later, we returned to Chaminade at lunch time. Even though it was scheduled to rain, we had some pretty amazing cars out. From Ferrari F458s, Nissan GTRs, McLarens and Ferraris, to Cobras and other classic cars, it was quite a line-up. Our friends from LAPD Topanga Division joined us as well to help spread the holiday cheer. As we rolled into the school, we revved our engines and everyone started cheering. It was an incredible first year at Chaminade. Hundreds of toys were collected and everyone had an incredible time. It was a huge success. A very special thank you to Chaminade, The Chaminade Car Club, The Car Guys and LAPD. It was a wonderful Day. And Brendan, you rock. You got it done and you said you would. That makes all the difference in life. Thank you.

Chaparral ARTICLE BY DUSTIN TROYAN

Chaparral Elementary School in Calabasas has done a Motor4Toys drive for almost a decade now. How does it work? Well, it starts with an awesome school. Chaparral Elementary School is absolutely incredible. The Principal, the staff, the kids and the families have been so kind and generous for so many years. When you start with good people, you get a great outcome. A few weeks before the holidays, I head over to the school and do brief speech. I thank the kids for their years of participation with Motor4Toys and we then kick off the toy drive. A couple weeks later, we head back to the school with about twenty cool cars. It is so much fun. This year, it was another huge success. We showed up for the toy pick up and as the sun came up, we knew it was going to be a great day. The kids went absolutely crazy when they saw the cars. We had the Tri-Five Chevys, McLarens, Ferraris and one big red Ford Truck. The “car guys” that came along had a great time. The kids asked them about the cars and the kids even got to sit in a few. The children also had a “song presentation” for the holidays. A little private concert for everyone there, it was truly magical. A toy drive,

cool cars and a song. It was such a win. Thank you Chaparral and Car Guys. It was another magical year, hundreds of toys collected for needy children, and we all won. It was simply beautiful.
