FROM THE EDITOR B Y D U S T I N T R OYA N

Well I did it! Well, I actually didn't do it, but I kinda, sorta did!I drove the Camaro project car before the year was out. I put up a video on my social media about it. You may say it is a miracle, you may say it is about time, you may ask if the car is done...no it is not done, but, I drove it! I had gotten to a point where I had to do something with the car. I had to get it running or get rid of it. The never ending project that I have way too much money into, that I should have been driving for years, that...that...I drove it! I ended up calling Jim Bassett at BonesFab in Oxnard. Over the years, Jim and I have become friends and I have watched his business grow and grow. Jim and his team can do just about anything from full restorations to full custom cars at any budget. I reached out to Jim and asked if he could stop by the house and take a look at the car. He said he would and sure enough he did. I decided to hand the car over to him as I just couldn’t get it done on my own. The project had stalled and I really didn’t have the time or the inertia to get it going. Jim looked at it casually and knew he could do whatever was needed and very nonchalantly said, “um hmmm, just let me know when you want to drive the car…’ For Jim and his team it was probably not that big of a deal. To me, it was a burden that I needed help with. The challenge then became that he was so swamped with work that I had to wait for my turn to get my car into his shop. It was not a problem per se, but I was really hoping to drive the car before 2019 was out. As I had set a goal of driving the car before the year was out and over the course of this year, I really didn't make too much progress on my own. I wasn’t sure if Jim knew that I had set that goal or maybe we had spoken about it, but my hope was what it was and was now in someone else's hands. I dropped the car off with Jim on a Saturday, he was kind enough to meet me at the shop on a weekend. He knew that December is really hard on me and he said he would help however he could. So I dropped the car and he said he would order the parts needed to get the gauges working and start making the car safe. By Tuesday, he had made more progress on the car than I had in the last two years! All the gauges were working, the hood was shutting correctly and he was sending the car to be dyno tuned. I think the parts came in on Tuesday and he and his team just went at it. I could not believe the progress. A few days later he called me and asked me to bring a few more parts. When I arrived, my little Camaro was sitting there and he smiles, hands me the keyes and says, “I knew you wanted to drive it before the year was out...go drive it!” Jim kind of laughed as the car has so much that needs to be done, but he saw how happy and excited I was. It was like a weight being lifted off of my shoulders. I fired the car up, probably smiling bigger than I had in years and off I went! Now mind you that the car has no door handles

Jim Bassett at Bonefsab.com

and the trunk is closed with blue tape, but I drove it around his shop, hear the roar of the motor and, and I drove it! The car runs. Thank God! I was so jazzed, I asked Jim to drive it so I could see it run and hear it. People must think I am crazy to be so excited over a car with no interior and no paint. Not to mention no windows, no door handles, no carpet and so on and so forth. Truth be told, the car still needs a lot of work, but it runs! I actually drove it. As I write this, the car is still at Jim’s shop. He is buttoning up a few things and then I am going to bring it home. We both agree that I should get reacquainted with the car and decide what direction I want to go with it. I need to change the pulley on the supercharger, but the car is making 600hp at the crank at 3lbs of boost. The car should be at 9-10lbs of boost and closer to the 720hp mark at the crank with the right pulley. I need to mini-tub the car, correct the floors a little (ok a lot) and then paint it. But, for the time being, I just want to drive it. I miss the days of cruising the old 1968 Camaro down PCH and now I will get to do it with a kid in the car and my wife and other daughter in her 1969 Fastback. I am closer to realizing a dream than I was for quite some time. I suppose that I should know that sometimes things take a long time. Some things come with heartache and challenges. Setbacks. I was never in the position to just “write a check” for a show car. I have always had to work within a budget and my family does come first. It took us about fourteen years to finish (mostly finish) my wife’s Fastback. It looks great now and it is hard to believe that it took so many years that now seem like a blink of an eye. This Camaro, something that I so dearly love as strange as that sounds, became such a burden. Friends thought I was crazy for keeping it. Friends told me to sell it. My wife told me that I should not quit. Trust me there were so many times where I wanted to get rid of the car. I wanted to give up. Sell it for whatever I could get out of it and move on. But, I knew that I would never forgive myself. I would feel like a quitter. A failure. I knew that guys would tell me that it took them longer to finish a project and under harsher conditions. I would sell the car in a heartbeat if I needed to to help my family, but those would be my terms, not quitting. And, what type of illustration would it be for my kids that the going got tough and I gave up on a car and myself. And then there are those that would say it is “just a car.” That is where they are wrong, it is a dream. It is a goal, it is something that I hoped for and sacrificed for. It has and will continue to make memories, to challenge me and to take me places. Maybe one day one of my daughter’s will want daddy’s Camaro and it will be part of my legacy. Or maybe they both want it and they will share it and drive it together long after I am gone. Telling stories of their crazy daddy and his battle to beat the Camaro. They will laugh, maybe they will cry and maybe it will be a source of inspiration. Thank you Jim for getting it to run before 2019 was out! You did it! We did it! And folks, for 2020, I guess the takeaway is what the same thing I always say, never give and endeavor to persevere. Follow your dreams...they may take a while...just never give up! - Dustin

16th Annual Motor4Toys

Charity Car Show

Motor4Toys 16th Annual Charity Car Show & Toy Drive he 16th Annual Motor4Toys Charity Car Show was incredible! On Sunday, December 1st, 2019 the car community came together with one purpose in mind, to help children during the holiday season. It wass truly magical. Just about every type of car imaginable was present and were loaded with toys to donate to the Motor4Toys Charity Car Show and Toy Drive. The car show kicked off the toy drive season for the Motor4Toys Charitable Foundation which over the last sixteen years has collected over six million dollars of toys which have been distributed to needy children throughout the state of California. The Foundation revolves around the very kind motorsport community and over the last handful of years, has grown outside of the car world. Many schools, businesses, Chambers of Commerce and even city officials have gotten behind the toy drive and helped to collect toys during the holiday season. Over the past sixteen years, so many people have played such an important role in making the Foundation what it has become, that when you think of Motor4Toys, you think of the car community. Every single person that has ever given a toy is considered part of the Motor4Toys family. We appreciate you all. We would like to thank all the Sponsors who support the event and to recognize Keyes Automotive Group for being the presenting sponsor of Motor4Toys for the second consecutive year. Thank you Keyescars.com! We would also like to thank the law enforcement agencies and first responders who supported the event in many different ways including static displays, fly-overs and toy distribution. At the event, LASD, LAPD, LA City and LA County Fire and CHP. Thank you all. Please save the date for the 17th Annual Motor4Toys Charity Car Show and Toy Drive which will be held on Sunday, Dec. 6th 2020. Please put it in your calendar! With the greatest respect and gratitude to everyone who supported the event Dustin and the Motor4Toys Family!

Chaparral - Motor4toys Toy Drive It was another great Chaparral-Motor4Toys Toy Drive. Over the year, Chaparral Elementary School in Calabasas has played a major role in helping collect toys for needy children all over the state of California. Thousands of toys have been collected and distributed over the years thanks to the kindness of the children, the parents and of course the faculty and staff. We always surprise the children with a car show at the school on the day of the "toy pick up." This year was no different. Thank you to the car guys and gals who supported this once again! www.motor4toys.com

500 Shades of Porsche 000 Magazine Presents Rare Shades 4 From the title of this article, this is not a steamy romance novel about Porsche. However, the accompanying photography subjects just might be considered pretty darn sexy. On September 14th, 000 Magazine, a high-end journal specific to Porsche, hosted the event ‘Rare Shades 4’ in the downtown Los Angeles Arts District with the assistance of the A+D Museum. Besides this special date having meaning for the 50th anniversary Porsche model 914 (September 14th, get it?), this was also a celebration of ‘Paint to Sample’ and unusual Porsche colors. Privately owned Porsche’s of many models, vintage and late model, arrived from as far as Texas for this one-day colorful event. It seems from the cars we often see on the roads here in Southern California, automotive manufacturers make their statement in exterior color. Lamborghini’s are most often seen in a striking yellow or orange in matte, gloss, metallic or pearl finishes. Ferrari’s are famous for their signature high-gloss Ferrari Red. Mercedes-AMG rides are usually subtle, dressed in white, grey, silver or black. Motorcycle manufacturers are no different with Harley Davidson’s trademark color being Harley Orange, Kawasaki with Candy Lime Green and Ducati, having their Italian roots along with Ferrari, also targets red as their trademark motif. On the other hand, Porsche oddly has never seemed to have marketed themselves to a specific exterior color but instead, since their nearly inception, has blanketed customers with a wide pantone swatch of choices.

During the years 1948 and 1949, Porsche had designed and built approximately 50 model 356’s, considered as prototypes by some, in Gmünd, Austria. In 1950, Porsche permanently moved further development to Zuffenhausen, a district in Stuttgart, Germany, were the 356 production was truly born. Those buying a 1950 356 had no other color option than ‘Fashion Grey’. Following this new factory kickoff year, exterior color options had exploded. From 1951 through the final 356 production year in 1965, on average, there were 11 colors offered each year. In 1964, enter the now iconic Porsche 911. By 1966, the 911 had an astonishing 37 exterior colors available. In this same year, its entry-level sister model, the 912, had even more at 38 colors on the palette chart. Long before computers and robotics, working in Porsche’s painting department must had been chaotic! With a rainbow of paint colors,

what if a new Porsche buyer still can’t find their personal choice? No problem. Porsche has offered customers Paint to Sample, simply known as PTS. For years, one can order their car from a local dealer and have the Porsche factory paint the vehicle to the color of the customer’s request, albeit with final color approval from management in Stuttgart. More recently, PTS has become rare due to limited production capacities and as of the time of this writing, Porsche has put PTS on hold. One example of PTS and a featured photo in this article, is of a 1978 911 SC. Here the original owner wanted her next Porsche to be the color of her favorite purple colored Pilot Razor Point pen. She handed the pen to her Porsche dealer salesperson. The pen traveled to Stuttgart and was ultimately approved. The next time she saw her pen again it was tagged, identified with a new Porsche assigned

color code, and arrived along with her new 911 SC. Her PTS added cost was a mere $910, but to this buyer seemed steep at the time. This SC is now with its second owner, a Texas based private Porsche collector.

911 SC may have sold as new, the percentage of PTS cost to vehicle sales price is surprisingly about the same. His GT3 Touring in Gulf Blue is stunning and gets much attention on the road and at local Porsche gatherings.

This author recently spoke to a Southern California Porsche owner who ordered his 2019 GT3 Touring in a PTS Gulf Blue, a long-time and well-known color for Porsche, but not a standard choice for this year’s car. Therefore, it is still considered a special order exterior paint so checking that PTS box on his order sheet was an uptick of approximately $15,000. Jaws might be dropping at the sound of that cost but considering this car model might have become a one-off factory painted color for 2019, its extended future value will likely only go in a positive direction. Comparing the PTS cost of this 2019 GT3 Touring and what the aforementioned 1978

Rare Shades 4 was a terrific event with a wide variety of original factory painted exterior colors and Porsche models on display. If you missed it, no problem. Porsche Club of America has launched ‘Rennbow, the Porsche Color Wiki’ online. This is the largest collection of Porsche images on the web. It’s truly amazing and the most ambitious Porsche enthusiast related sites available. Even if you’re not a Porsche nut, you’ll be truly impressed. There are currently about 500 shades and over 3,400 photographs, which will continue to grow over time. Rennbow is searchable by color name, color family, model year, or model. “Everybody Has a Story”

Featuring Hernan Antonio Rodriguez Article and photos by Hot Rod Jay Santos Instagram: 30_Rat Additional photos by Hernan Rodriguez Instagram: la.cv1.sport

“SuperCar Sunday is a weekly event whereby auto enthusiasts gather to share their amazing vehicles and camaraderie”. I love the quote above which was taken directly from the official Supercar Sunday website. It’s 100% accurate and a true reflection of the infamous car show. I’ve been attending Supercar Sunday since it first moved to the Woodland Hills mall parking lot located at the corner of Erwin St. and Topanga Canyon Blvd. for roughly 10 years. Since then, it’s found a new home at Pierce College and has been accepted with open arms. Although the location for the show has changed multiple times, there’s still one thing that remains the same. The people that gather every Sunday morning are really “The Stars” of the car show. As I’ve written and stated before in my past articles, “Everybody has a story”, this is Hernan’s... Hernan Antonio Rodriguez was born in El Salvador but grew up in the San Fernando Valley in

the Woodland Hills/Winnetka area. His first memory of driving a car was when he was around 8 years old. He was with his Dad and they were leaving the old Go-Kart track that was located next to the Van Nuys Airport on Hayvenhurst Avenue. His Dad asked him if he wanted to drive his Toyota Cressida around the back streets of the track. He explained to him “It’s no different from driving the Go-Karts, just bigger!” Without hesitation and sheer excitement, Hernan shouted “Yes!” From then on, his passion for cars was set in stone. Ironically, his first vehicle was another Toyota. A 1998 Toyota Celica GT that he now admits he should have kept. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve talked to that have said the exact same thing. Some of which that are still searching for their first long lost love. Let’s all agree we should of all “KEPT” our first car. Now back to our story… As fate would have it, Hernan ended up working with cars at a museum that specialized in 1954-1962 Nash Metropolitans. He learned how to test and rebuild carburetors, windshield wiper assemblies, fuel pumps as well as how to fabricate and install fuel and brake lines. Another important skill that he learned was how to repurpose parts that could be used on the Metropolitans. This one particular skill would help him in the

future with one of his new hobbies, customizing and creating one off Hot Wheels 1:64 scale cars. Fast forward to November 2013 and Hernan discovers Supercar Sunday. Supercar Sunday Car Show can be describes as “The anything and everything car show, a giant cauldron of automobile mayhem”. (Hey that’s pretty good, I just made it up!) This will prove to be extremely helpful with his imagination and creativity as you read on. Sadly in August 2018, Hernan's father passed away. To help with grieving and to keep himself busy, Hernan decided to start customizing diecast trucks. He started out with simple changes such as lifting the suspension and creating them in ways he thought they should have been originally made. As time went on, he mastered his skills and also acquired the correct tools to help him fabricate the thoughts in his head to reality. Target, Wal-Mart, Ross, Michaels and T.J. Maxx are some of the places he would go to find the cars. He doesn’t consider himself a collector of Hot Wheels or other scale cars in any sense. As a matter of fact, he’ll be the first to tell you even if he had a rare Hot Wheels in an unopened package, he would probably open it up to check it out!

His process for customizing is no different from someone who is working on a full size car. He sits down and stares at the miniature car thinking about if he owned the full size car, what would he change or fabricate on it. Inspiration comes from seeing cars at the car show, driving around or from his head. The whole process can take 10 to 20 minutes for a simple wheel swap or lowering job. But, it can take a few weeks for a full custom. Since there’s down time on some of them for drying, he’ll work on multiple cars at once. Also, he’s become a new father so he tries to sneak in an hour here and there while his baby sleeps. As Hernan points out, “There’s a lot of cutting, grinding, trimming, painting and fabrication that goes into my little cars”. One of his true talents is recreating a car that he’s seen in person. I’ve been very fortunate that he’s recreated “The 30 Rat”, which I’m proud to say is his favorite to date. I asked him what made him interested in recreating it. “I didn’t think I could make it look so similar, so I am proud of that. The car has always stood out to me since I started going to Supercar Sunday. It looks gnarly and it just oozes and radiates certain

vibes: COOL, MEAN, FAST and LOUD. YOU BETTER HOLD ON! You can’t even imagine how excited I was to see pictures of the whole process. He went through a couple of cars because he kept breaking things. To my surprise, he ended up giving me the finished car at Supercar Sunday. He normally keeps all the cars he customizes to help him remember what not to do etc., so I feel honored by his kind gesture and hard work. Great job Hernan, thank you! I hope everyone has enjoyed his story. Don’t be surprised if you see him walking around Supercar Sunday looking at your car, because yours might be next!

Icon of the 60’s Few aftermarket companies’ products have been so good that they were used as “Standard Equipment” on factory vehicles. But such was the case with Hurst Performance. The name was so synonymous with quality and performance, that Detroit automakers eventually created lines of vehicles with the “Hurst” moniker. George Henry Hurst began his career in 1958 at a small shop in Pennsylvania. He partnered with a fellow named Bill Campbell. Together they began their manufacturing company making bumpers for VW buses. When VW caught on to their innovation, they began producing the bumpers themselves. So HurstCampbell branched out into the “shifter” business. Their products included motor mounts, wheels, and shifter knobs among other items. It was the “Hurst Performance Shifter” that brought the name recognition.

George Henry Hurst

During the 1960’s, the company expanded, acquiring Schiefer Manufacturing (clutches) and Airheart (brakes). The duo brought the company public in 1968, and the friendship/partnership of the two innovators quickly evaporated. In 1970 the Hurst Company was acquired by Sunbeam Products. Hurst was eventually forced out, as was Bill Campbell. In 1987 Hurst was purchased by the Mr. Gasket Company. The “Hurst” brand was then sold to B&M Racing and Performance products in 2007. The achievements of the Hurst Company throughout the 60’s cannot be ignored. All four auto manufacturers (AMC, GM, Ford, Chrysler) had “Hurst Equipped Shifters” in their high performance models. A who’s who list of muscle cars, AMC’s Rebel Machine, Pontiac GTO, Oldsmobile 442’s, Boss Mustang 302 and 429, and the Plymouth Superbird are just a few in a long line. Hurst was also innovative in their marketing, with a “Trackside Shifter Hospital” at racing events. They sponsored race cars in the “Indy 500,” “Baja 1000,” and at the “Bonneville Salt Flats.” If you were a young man in the 1960’s, some of the best memories would be undoubtedly of the “Miss Hurst Golden Shifter Girls,” most notably Linda Vaughn. Sadly, George Hurst took his own life in 1986. But his influence in the “Performance World” still survives to this day. His life was interesting and complicated, involving multiple marriages and divorces, IRS problems, and noteworthy contributions to society (the invention of the “Jaws of Life”). If your curiosity is still running as strong as Hurst Products, I recommend the book, “Hurst Equipped: More Than 50 Years of High Performance,” by Mark Fletcher and Richard Truesdell. Until then, don’t miss a shift!

Los Angeles based Bliss Car Wash today announced the Orange County launch of its Bliss car wash brand, an eco-friendly chain of car washes sensitive to water usage and environmental factors. In a ribboncutting ceremony yesterday with local Placentia officials, CEO and Founder David Delrahim pledged to donate a new fresh-water well to the nonprofit, Wells Bring Hope, each time he opens a new car wash. The Placentia car wash, at 600 N. Rose Drive, is the first in a line of many

car washes expected to open under the Bliss brand name in California. The brand is founded by Delrahim, a California businessman and philanthropist. Delrahim and the Bliss company chose to work with the nonprofit, Wells Bring Hope because of its mission of drilling wells to bring safe water to rural villages in Niger, West Africa. “Fresh water is a precious resource, especially here in Southern California. While our business

practices at Bliss are set with water conservation in mind, our giving practices are geared toward helping people who badly need fresh water just to live,” said Delrahim. “We are grateful to David Delrahim, who is helping us with our critical mission to save lives and empower people by bridging the gap between clean water and healthy living in Niger, West Africa,” said Barbara Goldberg, Founder and President of Wells Bring Hope. The Bliss car wash model was

conceived by David Delrahim, who is passionate about the environment and water conservation. The new Bliss car washes use technology that constantly monitors fresh water usage, using 68 percent reclaimed water. The company also only uses cleaning products that are biodegradable and utilizes low-energy consuming machinery. David Delrahim is a Los Angeles based businessman and philanthropist and has nearly three decades of experience in the car wash indus-

try. Water's crucial role in accomplishing the world’s development goals is widely recognized. Africa faces endemic poverty, food insecurity and pervasive underdevelopment, with almost all countries lacking the human, economic and institutional capacities to effectively develop and manage their water resources sustainably. David is passionate about changing communities for the better and creating economic opportunities for the people of Niger by connecting them to clean potable water. About Bliss Car Wash Bliss Car Wash offers premium unlimited wash memberships at a great value. We are a refreshing car wash experience because we ensure that your car is cleaned responsibly, using cleaning products that are biodegradable and safe for the environ-

ment. We are water warriors, so we fight to protect it at every turn and closely monitor our usage. About Wells Bring Hope Wells Bring Hope is a 501(c)3 that was founded in March 2008 by Barbara Goldberg. To date, it has funded 568 wells and transformed the lives of over ½ million people with safe water in Niger, West Africa, the poorest country in the world. Wells Bring Hope partners with World Vision (WV), one of the largest humanitarian organizations in the world for its well drilling and maintenance.

Selling Your Home in the Winter While traditionally Spring is touted as the optimal time for putting a house on the market, experts also note that if you decide to sell your home during Winter, you could be pleasantly rewarded! Winter buyers tend to be the most serious. The lookie-loos and window shoppers of the Spring become scarce when it takes more effort to navigate weather conditions, but focused buyers are happy to ignore the cold, snow or rain in order to visit open houses. Additionally, in the winter months there are

traditionally fewer homes for sale. Thus, the competition over lower inventory can prove quite beneficial to a home seller. If you live in a cold winter climate, you have an opportunity to showcase your home’s ability to weather the harsh season. Cozy roaring fireplaces and warm bubbling spas become even more appealing to potential buyers. January and February are busy months for corporate relocation, as those buyers must move expeditiously. Year-end financial

bonuses might also translate into buying opportunities for individuals or families who are interested in either upgrading their homes or entering the housing market for the first time. There is no such thing as an impossible time of year to sell your home, so climate should not be a deterrent. It’s important to remember that every season has something to allure serious buyers. Good Luck and Seasons Greetings!
