A butterfly. I was riding my bicycle up Stunt Road yesterday. I know Stunt Road very well. A little too well. Driving it, riding it, hiking around it. It is my “go to” canyon for many things. I was riding up Stunt yesterday, it was about 100 degrees and being out of shape, it was truly a lovely time. My head bent over my handle bars, I notice a dead butterfly on the white line of the road. There she lay, expired. When you are riding your bike and you are “suffering” because you are either out of shape or going very hard, your mind can wander funny places. I started thinking about myself in relation to that little butterfly whose life had run out. Perhaps it was because I could barely breathe or my whole body was in shock. I needed something to take my mind off of the heat and my temporary suffering. That poor little butterfly. This time of year, spring and summer, you see a lot of butterflies. Floating effortlessly wherever the wind takes them. My daughters love butterflies. When we seem them, Scarlett will often give them names. I thought about what I would tell her if she saw the dead butterfly on the road. Most butterflies have a very short lifespan. From a week to a month. Some will go about a year, but for the most part, their lives are very short. I wondered if they realize that. Or, do they operate on a different time than we do? Are they content with their week or their month of life? Did they get it all in? Did they float and fly and land on everything they wanted to before they ran out of time. A few turns up, I came across another dead butterfly. Same type, same color, same size. Like that, they were both gone. And there I was, dripping sweat trying to survive my out of shape uphill battle with Stunt Road on a 100 degree day. The butterfly. It really got me thinking about life. Is our life really as short as the butterfly but we just don’t know it. As time speeds up and we get so wrapped up with our phones in our hand that we no longer look at that beautiful butterfly floating before us. We take for granted that we should live to seventy or eighty and that those that don’t got the short end of the stick. That somehow we are guaranteed a long life while we all know many people who went way too young. I think when I was younger, I felt more like a butterfly, floating around. More free in terms of time and following my passions. I am not complaining, but, I was riding up Stunt that day to try to recapture some fitness that I once had. Sure it was hot, sure I am out of shape, but I know I can still do it. Not fast or pretty, but, I can still do it. So I did it. Floating around in space with no consideration of time. I watch my kids play. They just play. They grab their dolls and have no concept of time. Talking to the dolls, the dolls talking back. For hours, they can play. It makes me so happy that they play. Their minds wander and there are no constraints. There are no invisible walls being put up, what they can, can’t or shouldn’t do. They are free when they are playing. Sometimes we have places to go and Scarlett will say, “Can’t I play just a little bit longer...” and of course she can. My dad told me to stay a kid as long as I could. That I had my whole life to be an adult, to take my time and enjoy my youth. Suffice to say, I always listened to my dad and his wise suggestions. I should write a book about them. It might not be politically correct, but it would be the honest to God truth. My father always told us how it was, but that is for another story. Am I a butterfly? Are you? Floating around, driving around, running around... aimlessly as the wind takes us. Sounds romantic doesn't it. An adventure, that little butterfly has for a week or a month or a year. As the wind blows so she goes and where she ends, on Stunt Road. If you had to go, it wouldn’t be too bad of a place.

Nice view, nice turns, so fragrant this time of year with the wildflowers finishing their bloom. Recently I lost a business associate. He was exactly my age, days apart. He came down with a cough and it ended up being a very severe form of cancer. Within a few months he was gone. It was so fast. He was here, then he wasn’t. He was a healthy guy who one day started coughing and that was that. It greatly affected and continues to affect everyone that knew him. It hit so close to home for many of us as, he was healthy. He was young. He was full of life. Just like that... He will be greatly missed. I thought about Luis, when I saw that butterfly. I thought about myself, my family, my girls. I thought about this letter what I was going to write as I pedaled up that hill. That I should be so appreciative that I could take a few moments to ride up that hill, in the heat, out of shape with my body screaming to stop, because, that butterfly was laying there and Luis is no longer with us. Because I am alive. I thought about am I doing what I am supposed to be doing? Am I happy with myself and if, like that butterfly, I only had a few weeks or a few months to live, where would I float to? Where would the wind take me? That I stare too much into my phone and not enough at the sunset at the beach with my family or with my friends. Catching that big wave that has eluded me for years now, that is when I most feel like a butterfly. I was talking to a cop at a board meeting, we talked about life and surfing and time challenges. He looked squarely in my eyes and said, “Surfing is good for your mental health...,” When I got out of that meeting, I called my wife, we grabbed the kids and headed to Malibu for a late afternoon surf session. I put the girls on the surfboad and spent time with them in the water. I caught a few waves and it was just where I needed to be, floating on the water with my butterfly wings.

Let the wind take you Where you need to go Follow your dreams More than you know Close your eyes Hear the wind Life is precious Live again Every day it goes by go out and play as time passes away Float on the wind carry you home life is so short your mind roams Life for this breath the air is pure be your life the end, always near Live for now be who you want to be satisfy your dreams on butterfly wings 5

The Urban Gardener Are you a closet gardener? Urban gardening, or “container gardening,” is not only fun, but also a great way to add color to your patio and healthy choices to your dinner table. Container gardening is the perfect answer for limited space...and limited patience. Armed with only a planter, gardening soil, and seeds or starter plants, you can create a flower or vegetable oasis. Container styles are almost limitless as long as they have good drainage. Remember to place trays underneath planters that will be placed in areas with no drainage. Creative ideas for growing plants include everything from wheelbarrows and hanging baskets to antique containers and aluminum tubs. Experiment with bright summer colors, and be sure to arrange the pots in an area with the recommended sun coverage for the specific plants

chosen – usually sun or partial shade. It’s important to pay close attention to watering schedules. Over-watering will rot the roots, and under-watering will result in very sad brown plants that will resent you. Be sure not to overplant for the space. Plants need room to breathe. A mini-trellis for vines, and cages to support tomato plants are important additions to you garden. You may need to use fencing or screens if you have a backyard full of hungry critters. Squirrels can be quite pesky when they are looking for a meal. Inexpensive screening can serve as a protective wraparound. There’s something very rewarding about seeing your first tomato or cucumber of the year. It’s summer – so get your hands dirty and be creative!

REV AUTO

Article by Mike Grudt Photos by Steve Geldman

The first Sunday in June greeted us with bright sunny skies and perfect weather as we enjoyed the surroundings at the Lake Sherwood Country Club for the Revolution de l’Automobile event. Formerly known as the Westlake Village Concours d’Elegance, Rev Auto held their second annual show at this exclusive upscale venue. The theme this year was, “Come hear the roar” which had a safari oriented ambiance. Suggested guest attire for the event was Safari Chic which consisted of animal prints, tan, khaki and white. They went all in with the safari theme on the croquet lawn adjacent to the main clubhouse. A number of vintage Land Rovers, Toyota Land Cruisers and an Austin 4x4 were displayed near restored Icon Ford Broncos among others. There were props with wicker furniture, old steamer trunks, world globes and other period items to help give the feeling of an African Safari at the Serengeti. If that wasn’t enough, Rev Auto actually brought in a giraffe, two monkeys, a Eurasian Eagle Owl and a Lanner Falcon. I have never seen a giraffe at a car event. It was truly unexpected. My son Greg actually got to feed the giraffe and we each had the falcon sit on our arms on a very thick leather gauntlet. As the owl stood peacefully on the handler’s gauntlet he encouraged Greg to pet the feathers on its back. Greg hesitantly reached out slowly and stroked the bird’s feathers. I glanced down and noticed the owl had a huge set of talons. I remarked that the talons were especially large and the handler casually stated the talons are larger than leopard claws. That was enough for Greg as he slowly retrieved his hand while it was still attached. That was close. The monkeys were also amazing as they jumped around, waved, made faces and entertained the guests. It really was well planned to add wild animals to the event. Rev Auto vehicles on display were all about quality and not quantity. There were no duplicates and most of those displayed were very rare, had a unique provenance or they were pristine examples of their model. One such unique vehicle was a British Racing green 1 of 16 1956 Jaguar XKSS convertible once owned by Steve McQueen. McQueen nicknamed the car “The Green Rat” which was basically a street legal race car and he often raced over Mulholland and Laurel Canyon while staying one step ahead of the Police. The car now resides at the Petersen Museum for all to enjoy. Another unique car was a 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C Corto Touring car that was somehow placed on a grassy circle surrounded by manicured shrubs in front of the main entrance to the clubhouse. I’m not sure how they placed it there. The Corto was the short wheelbase version that I believe is 1 of 13 produced. The beautiful car had a straight eight-cylinder engine with twin-superchargers and was considered to be the fastest road going vehicle of the time. Most other vehicles displayed were separated on the left side and right sides of the entrance on the circular driveway as it wrapped around. The left side consisted of older vehicles from the early days of motor cars with at least one model over one hundred years old and the model years seemed to get progressively higher to encompass modern day supercars to finish off the vehicles on display. Near the start of the left side row was a showroom new 1913 Mercer 35-J Raceabout with no windshield or other frills. This car was considered to be Americas first Supercar and was able to hit 70 mph when most cars could barely attain 40 mph. There were also some Packard’s, a Duesenberg, a 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL gull wing, a 1960 Aston Martin DB4 and a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTS among others. Moving around the front was one of my all-time favorites, a 1969 Lamborghini Miura S and then a 1973 Porsche 911 2.7 RS, a 1989 Porsche 959 Sport, a 2004 Ferrari Enzo, a 1995 Ferrari F50 (my son Greg’s favorite car), a 2015 Porsche 918 and finishing off with a late model Pagani Huayra BC. Whew, quite a collection. There were other unique and rare vehicles displayed throughout the grounds including a number of Porsche Speedsters and other older air-cooled Porsche 911s. There were even a couple of older Porsches in the banquet room. Definitely not something you see every day. Outside the banquet room as we enjoyed the music of the Russell Ferrante Trio (featuring Grammy winning saxophonist Bob Mintzer) there were a few other nice vehicles. One in particular is owned by Nick the event co-organizer, a 1939 Bentley 4.25L VanVooran Pillarless Saloon in a beautiful bright blue. This immaculate vehicle survived two close calls during World War II and it has an amazing back story. The Nazis even threatened to explode the wine cellar the vehicle was stored in. Rev Auto really went above and beyond to present an exquisite display of rare vehicles, great food, music and of course wild animals to keep up with the Safari theme. Everyone I spoke with was amazed with the uniqueness of this event. I can only imagine what Nick and Derek have in store for next year’s event. Please plan to attend and find out for yourself. Also, enjoy Greg’s photos from this event. 10

Article by Bob Stokes, Car Show Committee Member with Intro By Steve Geldman

Most people who live in Southern California have heard of the small Danish town named Solvang, located in Santa Barbara County. Many have made the short trek up from neighboring Los Angeles and other local areas to treat themselves to the Danish pastries, wine tasting and the many shops that this quaint town has to offer. Solvang is rich in Scandinavian history as many descendants started to make this their home over 100 years ago. What many automotive enthusiasts may be unaware is that Solvang hosts each summer one of the best annual car shows in California, the Wheels ‘N’ Windmills Car Show!

History & Purpose

The car show’s humble beginnings started in 1999. The first six years the show was in the neighboring town of Buellton and known as the “Avenue of Flags Car Show”. As the show grew and more parking spaces were needed, the show moved in 2005 to the town center of Solvang and boldly became “Wheels ‘N’ Windmills Car Show”. Today, this Non-Profit event covers several city streets which are closed to normal traffic as well as at Solvang Park. The event was originally created by a local group of classic car owners who wanted to use a car show to give back to this proud community. The original purpose was, and still is, to put on an event that caters to the car enthusiast and gives a boost of revenue for the surrounding towns by ways of increased tourism, albeit even if only for one or two days. All the proceeds from Wheels ‘N’ Windmills go to various pre-chosen charities which often change year to year. It takes months of planning to organize an event of this size and a very dedicated group of committee members and other volunteers offer many hours of their time to have made this a success for the past 19 years. During this time, the number of vehicles exhibiting at Wheels ‘N’ Windmills has grown from 85 in year one to over 300 vehicles registered in 2017. When the event moved to Solvang, the popularity of the car show increased significantly due in part to the beautiful backdrop of Solvang and the many shops and restaurants for all to enjoy before, during and after the event. The car show now attracts participants and car clubs from all over Northern, Central and Southern California. Wheels ‘N’ Windmills also draws people from other states to participate in this event. Today, this one-day car show that is FREE to the public attracts approximately 10,000 spectators. There are more than 50 businesses or individuals, most of them local, that provide sponsorship money, raffle prizes, or services to make it possible to present this fun and entertaining event.

Giving Back

The proceeds from Wheels ‘N’ Windmills have helped many local and national charities over the years including the Solvang Friendship House, The Solvang Elementary School, Happy Endings Animal Sanctuary, Buellton Senior Center, Cupcakes for Cancer, The Progeria Foundation, Central Coast Type 1 Diabetes, Old Yeller Ranch Rescue, and many more. In 2008 the car show began raffling off a new V8 Engine to provide funds to help keep the Santa Ynez Valley High School Auto Shop program in place. The first V8 Engine was donated by a previous alumnus and the raffle was so successful that it has been an integral part of the event ever since. In 2013 the Santa Maria and Lompoc High School Auto Shop programs were added because the proceeds from the raffle had become too much for one auto shop program’s needs. In the thirteen years that the car show has been staged in Solvang, almost $300,000.00 has been raised to support the charities and the high school auto shop programs. How terrific is that?!

When & Where

This year’s show is slated for Saturday August 25th from 8 AM to 4 PM and located in the Town Center of Solvang. You can’t miss it while driving on Mission Drive (Highway 246). Come early to get easy parking. Sorry, exhibitor registration is now sold out so please come as a guest and enjoy the atmosphere while viewing some amazing cars. We hope next year you will want to return and be a participant showing off your pride and joy!

Pedal Drives Social Media For The Automotive Enthusiast Article by Erik Lunseth

Pedal is what you get when you combine the passion for all things automotive and a desire to do social media the right way. Like many of you I can trace my passion for cars back to the early days of childhood. It is that same passion that continues to fuel the spirit and love of the automobile within me to this day. This passion, the digital age, and the changing environment of how individuals, organizations and businesses interact and market to one another, is the formula for what led us to create a new social media app for the automotive enthusiast. Everyone knows a vehicle can’t run without power, and it doesn’t stop without brakes. Since pedals enable these functions to happen, it was natural to call the app Pedal, and use the tagline, Passion for What Moves. Since Henry Ford had thousands of cars rolling off the assembly lines we’ve wanted to hit the open road and share stories and pictures of our cars and journeys. This is still true today, only the medium has changed. Social media has its place in car culture and Pedal wants you to be excited about the endless possibilities. A lot of people either embrace and love social media, or they completely stay away from it. Pedal wants to do social media the right way. Pedal was created and built to give everyone in the automotive world a social media platform they can enjoy; from the casual car observer and cars and coffee fan, to the diehard collector, as well as those that not only play in the automotive sector, but market to and work within it. The world moves quicker today than it ever has. A lot of changes have driven our way over the last decade and continue to do so. It can be argued that in the history of the automobile it has never been talked about more than it is today. Communication has drastically changed during this same period as well. New devices and methods to communicate have been brought on line and continue to be developed, thus changing how we all capture and share moments and memories. Go to any event, car show, cars and coffee, concours, you name it, odds are pretty solid that you’ll see great cars, meet great people and hear wonderful stories. Further, odds are spot on that you’ll see man, woman, and child, anyone with a smartphone, taking pictures and posting to social media. Pedal’s place is to bridge the car culture of today with these new communication tools to build an incredible community. The goal with Pedal is to be automotive centric. Members show their enthusiasm by revving posts. Also, you can embed links in all posts to share and promote what you’re doing. Like any race car driver, he/she doesn’t and can’t do it alone. And Pedal is fortunate to have a talented team in the pits. Co-founders Erik Lunseth and Caroline Connor created and run Pedal along with advisors Mattox Gardner and Dale Ferrera. The formidable team of Shane Zilinskas and Kara McGehee at ClearSummitt oversaw the creative and innovative app architecture. Pedal is the must have, free app for automotive enthusiasts and everyone, organization and business connected to, and working within the automotive industry. Pedal is a social media community to capture, share, and discover the passion that moves. We hope to see you all on Pedal. Pedal is available in app stores: Pedal – Passion for What Moves Website: pedaltheapp.com Email: info@pedaltheapp.com

2019 PORSCHE CAYENNE Article by Dustin Troyan

To become the best selling Porsche in history, one would think of course of the 911. With over a million 911 models sold over almost sixty years (2023) the 911 is clearly what has made Porsche what it is today, iconic. I recall the Porsche purists talk about the “new” Porsche SUVs years ago, they all hated the idea. How could Porsche do it? They are “selling out,” they are becoming “pedestrian,” they are no longer Porsche...to the contrary, they redefined a market segment in a way that only Porsche can. It was a grand slam! With over 750,000 Cayenne models sold since the initial launch, the Cayenne is on track to be the best selling Porsche of all time. Porsche indeed nailed it and is now offering their newest platform fo the 2019 model year, the third iteration of the Cayenne. The 2019 Cayenne is what every family needs, if you need the utility of a SUV and appreciate Porsche of course. His car, her car and the family car. It meets all of your needs while carrying you in Porsche performance and styling. A model for every household, you can take the kids to the game, head to home depot or the race track. You really do have to love that about the Porsche brand. One of the best values in terms of performance and luxury, a Porsche can do it all, while offering award winning reliability. For 2019, the Cayenne has been restyled, but, nothing too dramatic. The design naturally pays homage to the 911 and the previous generation Cayenne. There is not a single piece of sheet metal that is carried over and it is a bit more modern in appearance as well as offering a sportier look. A consistent evolution of the model has been achieved by Porsche designers. The Cayenne also borrows quite a bit from the flagship Panamera. From the interior to the technology, the consistency of models will allow drivers to feel right at home in the new Cayenne. If you have multiple P-cars in your garage or stable, operating the different models will be seamless. The Cayenne will offer three different variants; Base, S and Turbo. The Base model offers a 3.0-liter turbo V-6 producing 340hp and 332 lf-ft of torque. Mated to an 8-speed transmission, the 3-liter really moves and offers 30 hp more than the previous generation. The S model offers a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6 with 440 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. The midline offering is the best of all worlds. A bit more performance than the Base model while not quite stepping up to the Turbo. But, there is always the Turbo. The Turbo that sounds so lovely doesn’t it. The Turbo offers a twinturbocharged, 550-hp, 4.0-liter V-8. It will go from standing to sixty in 3.7 seconds. You just have to love Porsche, don’t you? Supercar speed wrapped up in a luxury SUV with big carbon ceramic brakes, taking you to the hardware store, the kids to school, or the race track. The Turbo.... Quintessential Porsche. For 2019 the Cayenne is redefined, redeveloped and will be even more successful than previous models. With a shorter and wider stance, the Cayenne for 2019 is even more performance inspired. An all new appearance, better handling an increased power you simp-ly can’t go wrong. The fit and finish as well as technology incorporated to the Cayenne is second to none. The new Cayenne is a winner across the board. For more information the 2019 Porsche Cayenne Models, please visit Rusnak Porsche in Westlake. Ask for General Manager Keith Goldberg and tell him Driven World sent you. You might just leave with a new Porsche. www.porschewestlake.com

WORLDS APART 1964 Pontiac GTO vs. 2018 Kia Stinger GT2 Article by Randy

Like so many of us “gearheads”, my vintage car collection is insured with Hagerty Insurance. Recently, I was contacted by a representative of Hagerty regarding an upcoming article in the Hagerty magazine. They wanted to highlight the new Kia Stinger GT2 with what many consider the original 60’s American muscle car, the 1964 Pontiac GTO. Since mine is insured by Hagerty, they wanted to feature mine in their story. Obviously, I was delighted to do so with myself behind the wheel of my “Little GTO”. Mine was built for performance. She has her original 6.5 liter 389 cu. in. V8 with 348hp. She is equipped with “Tri-Power” (three 2bbl carburetors). This is mated to a Muncie 4 speed transmission directing the power to a “Safe-T-Trac” (limited slip) differential. The only other options were console, AM radio with Verb-A-Phonic (reverb) rear speaker, simulated wood steering wheel and in dash tachometer. By contrast, the Stinger was equipped with a twin turbo-charged V6 rated at 365hp mated to an 8 speed automatic transmission and all wheel drive. Performance is 0 to 60 in 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 167 mph. Car and Driver clocked a GT2 at 12.9 seconds at 111 mph in the quarter mile. Our day began my meeting near Universal Studios at 8am. There, we discussed the plan for the day’s events. Since they had a professional photographer on

hand who specializes in photographing automobiles the plan was to take the two cars and put them through their paces on and near Mulholland Dr. There are many curves as well as straightaways to test the car’s performance and cornering capabilities.Fortunately, we had enough manpower to advise us, by radio, if there were any other vehicles in the area whilst we were being photographed. We spent the day zipping through curves as well as accelerating on the straightaways one car behind the other. Sometimes, the photographer would have us tailgate the van from which he was shooting out the rear door. I must admit that, even though the GTO was built to “point and shoot” in a straight line, she handled very well through the curves. The Kia, of course, was built for speed through the curves and well as the straightaways. When it was my turn to put the Stinger through its paces, I was quite impressed with the way she handled. She hugged the curves and the turbocharged engine gave her blistering acceleration on the straightaways. To say the least, I was impressed. We ended our day on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. By this time, it was 6pm. The GTO was introduced to the public by a pull out brochure in Road and Track magazine. I took a picture overlooking the ocean in an effort to, at least, partially recapture that original photograph. The GTO enhanced the Pontiac division of General Motors’ performance image. The Stinger hopes to do the same for Kia.

BACK BEHIND THE WHEEL Article and Photos by Steve Ellis @GetBTW

These past few months have been a whirlwind to say the least. My younger brother graduated from Texas A&M University, I screened my first feature film, which covers mental health and substance abuse in youth, in my hometown, I bought another car and have been “restoring” it, the film I’m in also screened in Houston for the National Association of Drug Court Professionals conference, where I sang the National Anthem in front of 6,000+ people, and my mother had surgery…. I’m exhausted just typing and thinking about all of that. Life comes at you in so many ways, sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes it comes at you and you just have to take a moment to step back and take a break before you re-engage. I had to apply this to my love of cars. With all of the above mentioned going on, my Facebook page was hacked, which meant that I lost access to my Stateside Skylines group, as well as lost my Behind the Wheel page. When the hack happened, I was furious, but then I realized is that sometimes you have to let things go, so that you can come back fresh. When I wrecked my car, I was furious, but I realized I was alive, no one was hurt, and that as much as I loved my car, it could be replaced. If you’re on social media as much as myself, you come across a lot of memes. There is a meme where Jesus is holding a large teddy bear and asking a little girl to let go of her little bear, with her unaware that he had a bigger better bear waiting for her. I started to think about all the things that needed to be serviced, replaced, fixed, or that I just didn’t like, that I no longer have to deal with on the new to me car. This car was also the model above my previous model, as well as came with a lot of upgrades from the factory that my previous car didn’t have. Because I couldn’t see the future and understand there was something greater, I fought to hold on to my old car. Granted my 2004 Nissan 350Z isn’t a collector’s car, it was one that I did greatly enjoy. If you go back to my previous article about “Zoey” you can see how much I enjoyed the car over the previous 8 years. However, the new to me car, is a 2008 Nissan 350Z Nismo edition, which they only made from 2007 to 2008, and here in the states we only received 1,615 models of it (that number varies depending on who you ask). By the time this article is published, I may or may not have revealed the car to my fellow car friends. I admit I have enjoyed trolling them via Facebook and Instagram keeping them guessing about what I did end up purchasing. What are my plans for the car, which I’ve yet to give a proper name? Well, since I’ve been in Los Angeles now for 7 years this coming November, I have yet to hit any of the SoCal race tracks, which is one of the first things I’d like to do once I sort some things out on the car. The last track day I attended was at Motorsports Ranch I think. I did do a drive experience at Circuit of the Americas, but I don’t count that as I wasn’t in my own car. There is a list of parts that are on order to really make this car feel familiar, and then I can’t wait to hit the track, grab a Saturday’s breakfast at Newcomb’s Ranch, a Sunday lunch at Neptune’s Net in Malibu, or of course sit in the 101 and 405 traffic as I very slowly head to a mundane location.

Cars N Copters takes over Huntington Beach, CA Article & Photos by Greg Grudt

On Sunday, May 6, 2018 the residents of Huntington Beach had no clue what would be coming to their city. The 1st Cars N Copters car show completely took over the city of Huntington Beach between the hours of 10am – 4pm. With supercars, hyper cars and helicopters as far as the eye could see, there was truly something for everyone at this show. Per usual, I arrived three hours early to this show to watch the cars roll in, beat the crowds and to actually see the cars and not just a bunch of heads in my viewfinder. Last summer in Monterey we were blessed with seeing 10 Koenigsegg’s all displayed together at The Quail Motorsports Gathering. Cars N Copters casually decided to step it up a notch and proudly gathered 13 Koenigsegg’s of varying models and designs. Christian Von Koenigsegg of Koenigsegg Automotive also made an appearance at the show which technically made 14 Koenigsegg’s at the show. The first customer delivered Koenigsegg Regera was displayed along with five of the Agera RS’ (25 cars produced). One of the Agera RS’ on display happens to be the exact car that reached a jaw dropping speed of 277.9 MPH on a closed road in the state of Nevada recently. If this is the first time you are hearing about this, be sure to watch the videos on YouTube. There were seven different models of the Koenigsegg displayed at the show including the: CCX, CCX Koenigsegg Edition, CCXR Trevita, CCXRs, Agera R, Agera RS and the Regera. When there are Koenigseggs displayed at an event you can safely bet that there are probably a few Paganis just around the corner. There was not a shortage of Paganis at Cars N Copters. There were eight in total, three of which were rare iterations of the Zonda. A Zonda Tricolore (1 of 3), a Zonda Cinque Coupe (1 of 5) and a Zonda Cinque Roadster (1 of 5) were all caught basking in the Huntington Beach sunlight that day. I should also mention the two Huayra BC coupes and two brand new Huayra Roadsters that were also on display. While the Koenigseggs and Paganis definitely stole the show, there were some other amazing machines that definitely caught my eye. There were a few McLaren P1’s and about a dozen McLaren 720S. You know we are all a little jaded living here in Southern California when a red Ferrari Enzo was barely even looked at or photographed. There were also 3 Bugatti’s on display (2 Chirons and 1 Veyron). In my opinion the star of the show was the 1995 Ferrari F50 (1 of 349 produced). It is always nice to see one of those in the sunlight. Lastly the sharp enthusiast would have spotted the extremely rare black Aston Martin Lagonda Tarif casually parked in between a Ford Mustang and another Aston Martin. These cars were never meant for the US market which means this is the only one currently in the United States and carries a price tag of $1 million dollars. What really made this car show unique were the helicopters. It is not everyday that you get to see an up close view of an assortment of private and law enforcement agency helicopters mixed in with millions of dollars’ worth of automobiles. Many people might think this event only appealed to the local car community, when in fact it became an event known worldwide. I had a friend travel from Europe to attend Cars N Copters and I heard that multiple enthusiasts had traveled across the US just to attend this show. It was an amazing first attempt and I look forward to attending the next Cars N Copters as it will most likely become an annual event. The proceeds from the event were given to the Huntington Beach Police & Community Foundation. Congrats to all who were involved in making the event so successful. Enjoy the photos and we will see you at the next one! Story and Photos by Greg Grudt

The Rodeo Drive Concours is the largest public event held annually in Beverly Hills. The Concours d’ Elegance is held every year on Father’s Day. This Rodeo Drive car show is free and open to the public and draws high quality classic automobiles and luxurious new models to Beverly Hills. This year, Beverly Hills celebrated its 25’t Anniversary of Rodeo Drive’s Concours d’ Elegance. This ‘Silver Anniversary’ celebration featured an entire block filled with silver cars on both sides of Rodeo Drive. This idea created a special look of silver cars along with the customary array of extraordinary autos. The show starts at 10:00am and goes till mid-afternoon. To photograph the cars arriving, parking, and setup, I arrive early in order to acquire closer and more focused photographs. The Rodeo Drive Concours d’ Elegance is an event you don’t want to miss! Now, take a closer look at some of these world class automobiles in these photographs. 1952 Alvis TB 21 2018 Pagani Huayra Roadster 1955 Fiat V8 By Zagato 1951 Mercury by John D’Agostino 1949 Cadillac Sedanette 1973 Lotus Europa 1954 Fiat Supersonic V8 1994 Buhatti EB110 1929 Packard Dual Cowl Phaeton 1938 Bentley 4 ¼ Liter Special Speedster 1954 & 1958 Mercedes Benz 300SL 1951 Chevrolet Delux Convertible 1935 Auburn Boattail Speedster 1957 MGB Coupe 1933 Chrysler Imperial Victoria Coupe 1942 Chrysler Town & Country Barrel Back 9 Station Wagon 1982 Renault R5 Turbo Fiat 600 Carraro Volkswagen Camper 1960 Austin-Healey MK1 Sprite 1962 Mercedes Benz 190SL 1969 Lamborghini Islero S 1946 GMC CC101 1969 Lamborghini Miura S 1938 Hispano-Suiza Dubonnet Xenia 1965 Alfa Romero Sprint Speciale 1965 Lamborghini 350 GT 1941 Buick Sedanette 1964 Aston Martin DB5 1960 Aston Martin DB4 Series II 1972 DeTomaso Pantera 1957 Continental MK II 1938 Cadillac 71 N1 1962 Jaguar XK-E Roadster

Cruising With Cynthia

Article Cynthia Hernandez & Photos by Wesley Nielsen

Summer is here and our Southern CA car community is already rockin’ and rollin’! Chances are you've tidied up your ride, a little buff, a little polish, some clean sparkly wheels and you hit the road! The year has started off with several fun car events that I've attended, including the Classic Auto Show at the LA Convention center in the beginning of March. Just a bit of a re-cap, it was hosted by Michelle and Mike Brewer from the cable tv show ‘Wheeler Dealers’ and The Velocity Channel, this show has quickly become a must-see car event! With over 1000 classics on exhibit, there was everything for the collector, the enthusiast, the wrenchers, all the passion for classics under one roof. Tons of vendors, and if you wanted to meet one of your favorite auto celebrities, chances are that you did. They were walking around all weekend, taking photos with their fans and talking shop! Just by eavesdropping you could pick up on some great tips and stories. So, as March brought The Classic Auto Show, it included something extra special in its second year, which was the All Girls Garage corral! I was thrilled to have my 1965 Dodge Dart GT convertible on display along with Bogi’s Chevy Montage All Female Build 1957 Chevy Pickup, Kathy Garner and her pristine 1932 Ford Cabriolet/ High Boy, winning Best in Show Hot Rod, a 1964 Ford Falcon, a Boss 302 and several other awesome rides owned, maintained and driven by women. The Women ‘N Wheels panel, included the legendary Race Car driver, Lynn St.James and several other fascinating gals, all sharing their stories and knowledge under one roof, it was inspiring to say the least! It revealed an avenue for gals that want to get into or advance in the automotive industry! It was a fast paced weekend that fueled everyone’s love of Cars! The end of March was just as exciting with The Automobile Driving Museum and their All Girls Garage Car show! In its second year, this show delivered a spectacular array of cool cars and their female owners! We had a great display of pickups,Peggy’s 1946 Ford, a purple Riviera, low riders...these gals wrench on their cars, they give them quite a bit of tlc...some are daily drivers and some are weekend cars, and all of them get driven with smiles behind those wheels! The year’s schedule at the Automobile Driving Museum, quaint yet sophisticated, hosts some of Southern California's best car shows events, and every Sunday 3-4 of our vehicles come off the showroom floor and our docent drivers take you for a ride around the neighborhood. I'm one of the drivers and I give tours of the museum as well, so come on down and go for a cruise! You can get close and personal with our cars, take advantage of photo opportunities while sitting in the cars and imagining for instance, what it was like to drive a Model T in the early 1900’s, or hop in a1970 Dodge Challenger and remember those crazy days. There is a kids corner, an ice cream parlor, special events room and the docents are friendly and willing to share the history, motivation and spirit of the collection of automobiles. For more info check out the website at theadm.org. Every weekend there is an endless list of cruise-ins,events and car shows in and around SoCal. I've met so many cool people along the way and Ladies, it's always fun when you're around so let's hit the road, it's gonna be a good time!

Fashion Freeway:

White Stripes Are In This Year Like Clothing, if we look at pictures of automobiles throughout time, we can trace automotive fashion trends. The Art Deco looks of the thirties, the fins of the fifties. But white wall tires have seemed to transcend the constraints of time and have been in use over the last eighty years! At the turn of the 1900’s all automotive, motorcycle, and bicycle tires were made with white rubber. Rubber in its natural state is white but white rubber is very slippery. To improve traction, carbon black compound was introduced in the tread section to improve traction. Eventually, all black tires were considered the “Premium Tire”! Some consider it a sleeker look. But for many, the wide bright white wall was still the way to go! Their popularity started in the 1930’s and reached its prominence in the 1960’s and 70’s. Even though the white wall has survived all these years, it has changed style over time. It was a wide white strip of

several inches in the beginning, but by the late 1950’s we saw the white wall shrink to a one inch strip. Some tire manufacturers like “Vogue”, incorporate a design insignia into their white wall.

35

We can still see white walls today on high end cars like Cadillac and Lincoln. Harley Davidson still sports them on select models as well. It goes to show that a truly classic design never goes out of style.
