Father and son, Charles and Nick McClendon, don’t disagree about many things these days except for when it comes to their Chevelles. The consecutive license plates, MY BAD 70 and MY BAD 71 leave little doubt as to the nature of their disagreement. While Nick’s 1970 LSX powered 700 hp beast is no doubt the faster of the two, Charles’ 71, with a fully dressed, cammed, and polished 454 Big Block is no slouch off the line. The question that must be answered is when it comes to classic muscle cars what constitutes ‘bad”? Is it brawn or beauty or maybe a little of both?

Checkered Flag And the winner is…..

A New Year and new racing season has begun. The one thing all forms of racing have in common is the checkered flag waived on the last lap to the winner of the race! Although there are many theories, the exact origins of the use of a checkered flag to end races are lost in history. One theory is that in the early days of settlement in the American Midwest, horse races were followed by a large public meal. A checkered flag was waived to signal the meal was ready and the racing should stop. Another claim is that checkered flags were used in early 19th century bicycle races in France. A likely reason for the high-contrast checkered flag is its conspicuous design against the background of a crowd. Most early races ran on dirt, where the dust reduced the driver’s visibility. The earliest known photograph of a checkered flag used to end a race was from Long Island, New York in 1904 at the Inaugural Vanderbilt Cup Race. Some however, dispute the photo as being from 1906-08. A 2006 publication, “The Origin Of The Checkered Flag, A Search For Racing’s Holy Grail”, written by Fred Egloff and published by the International Motor Racing Research Center at Watkins Glen, traced the flag’s origin to Sidney Waldon. An employee of the Packard Motor Car Company, Sidney devised the flag to mark “checking stations” (now called check points) along the rally-style events of the Glidden Tour. There is no regulation as to the size of the flag. Different racing sanctions use different styles, some wave one flag, and others wave two. I suppose, what matters most is being lucky enough to see one waved for you.

Oh you mean SuperTuning in the valley, yeah I know Koko. Photos and Article by Barrett Mitchell

In the mecca of car culture here in southern California there is no shortage of automotive shops attempting to sell you the latest and greatest in efforts to make your car stand out. Everyone touts they have a guy that can “totally hook you up” with whatever you need to make your car cooler, faster, and better. The problem I’ve found when going to some of these shops is that it’s difficult to put your trust in someone you don’t know based off of a referral from someone you may have just met. Now you are trusting a stranger with one of your largest investments, a car, mixed with spending your hard earned money you start to worry if they are really as good as you have been told. I had lived in the San Fernando Valley four years before I found out about Super Tuning & Performance (STP) from a buddy who recommended them to me as a place to find a Honda shift knob. I was told that it’s an exhaust and muffler shop but that the guy who runs it is big into Honda’s, and the import scene, and probably has what I’m looking for or knows someone who does. What I found was way more than I bargained for, like instantly walking in to a buddy’s garage where my friends and I would be working on our cars in the driveway. There were K series motors on the floor and rare JDM exhausts hanging from walls that were wallpapered with all the big names in the import world. The man who greeted me

drivenworld...12

as I walked in was welding up an exhaust under a new M3 with a bit of a cholo look wearing baggy shorts with flip flops and socks who introduced himself as Koko. I told him what I was needed and he directed me to a display case to which he had exactly what I had been searching for. Most shops will happily take your money and show you the door but Koko being a true car guy was interested in what kind of Honda it would be used for and if I had any custom work done. That was the beginning of it as I followed him around under the bimmer on the lift for 30 minutes as he effortlessly laid down perfect welds while we talked about the import car scene. STP isn’t a one man show either as the shop is staffed with another gear head and tuner fan named Mark who will happily give you his two cents on anything whether you asked for it or not. Both guys are incredibly knowledgeable and have been involved in the car world for over 20 years

with some fantastic stories to tell. SuperTuning has worked on every kind of car you can imagine and like most shops sponsored a few race cars over the years. When asked how he got so deep into loving imports, with his tuned Civic EK hatch sitting a few feet away, he just laughed a little. Koko came up with the name Super Tuning Performance as a mash-up of combining two popular import magazines using Super Street and Honda Tuning. This now local legend tells me it has been a crazy ride along the way from his high school days hanging out at “Bouncers Hydraulics” to taking the leap and starting STP back in 1995. When asked what drove him to opening a garage he said it was actually at the direction of his dad who told him to open a SMOG shop. Koko not realizing the strict time frame had missed the deadline to apply and decided, “well I like working on cars so why not apply to general mechanics school in-

stead”. Since then he has had plenty of cars he helped work on grace the cover of just about every car magazine. He tells me a story about one guy who called him up from Pennsylvania who wanted some crazy custom exhaust build that no one else in his area would or could do. So of course Koko said “sure no problem”, but discounted the guy figuring no one would be crazy enough to drive or have their car hauled 3000 miles across the country just for an exhaust on a Honda Prelude. Sure enough 5 days later there was a white Prelude with Pennsylvania plates waiting out front of the shop as he arrived that morning and standing next to it a guy asking “hey, are you Koko?”. Of course there have been plenty of obstacles over the years as things didn’t fall in to place so easily, but he owes a lot of his thanks to a supportive family, his loyal friends, and his loving wife who he talks about fondly like they are still dating in high school. There are a lot more stories from both Koko and Mark who are there almost every day except Sunday wrenching or welding under every kind of car you can think of. Their main area of expertise is exhaust repair, replacement, and fabrication but they can tackle just about anything import or domestic, so if you need help with your car I’m happy to say that now I too know a guy that “can totally hook you up”.

2019AcuraNSX Article and Photos by Dustin Troyan

A lot of you know that I do a lot of different things in the “car world...,” if it has to do with cars, my phone often rings. Through the years I have been very lucky to be supported by many car manufacturers and dealers in many different ways. One way is that I will receive cars to review or simply drive. Kind of a dream for a car guy, yeah, it is pretty cool. When I got my hands on the new 2019 Acura NSX I had absolutely no idea what to expect. I have driven just about every car out there, some valued in the millions of dollars, but, never an Acura NSX. Either the first generation or the current model. I remember when the first gen came out, I was in high school. Nobody knew much about it, other than it was meant to be a street legal race car, you rarely saw them and when you did, you would point, wave and give a thumbs up. Over the years, you would spot them less and less on the road. Quietly, the collectability of the first generation NSX has been steadily climbing and many feel that the first generation cars will hit the stratosphere. I tend to agree. If and that is a big if, you can find an all original, one-owner, totally stock NSX, well, just like a first gen COPO Camaro or Shelby Cobra, it is the Holy Grail of JDM collecting. When the 2019 NSX was delivered, I thought, cool...nice car. I was at Lavaggio in Agoura Hills and didn’t think much of it at the time as I had a lot to do in a short period of time. Working through my tasks that day it was time to go and now I actually had a moment to look at the car. I had been close to them, but never sat in one nor had I ever driven one. I can sincerely tell you that I had absolutely no expectation of the car. A buddy knew I was taking delivery of the car that day and asked if I could pick up his son at school in it as it was the day after his birthday. Naturally I had to oblige. I hopped into the NSX, powered her up and off I went. Arriving at the school, the car stood out like a sore thumb.

All the high school kids had their phones out and were instantly taking pictures and videos. My friend was in the car in front of me and as his son approached he said “Happy Birthday and Surprise, you get to ride in the NSX.” He was stoked. As fate would have it, I had to head to the Lamborghini Dealership in Calabasas so naturally I had to take Mulholland. A few turns later and we found ourselves on the top of Stunt Road. His dad followed behind us and at the top of Stunt, we admired the NSX and told stories about Stunt Road from our youth.... fun stuff. Back to the 2019 Acura NSX, what can I say about the car? I can say it is absolutely INCREDIBLE in every way. When I say incredible, I mean, good grief is this truly a well balanced sports car. As aforementioned, I had no expectations having never even sat in one and let me tell you, this little twin-turbo six cylinder car is phenomenal. I am not saying that to just say it, Acura did an absolutely astonishing job with this car. First and foremost, everything you want in an exotic car is there. The look, the lines the body, how it sits. It is a very interesting car in that the more you examine it the more you see. And, in different lighting, you see different body angles that you might not have noted. The exterior of the car, it is truly quite sophisticated. What does it say to me? It says, I am here, I am exotic, I am not looking to be too ostentatious, but I am definitely a contender. The more you examine the car, the more you like it. How does the car drive? Being used to naturally aspirated V8s and V12s and now twin-turbo V8s, I once again had no expectation with he twin-turbo V6. The car is fast. The car is nimble. The car makes you feel like a race car driver straight out of the gate. It is a very easy car to drive, point it and it goes. The twin-turbos spool up and there is absolutely no lag, it is all, go. The shifting is on point and the car just seems weightless. You can throw the car around in the corners and you feel

so safe and secure, it would actually be interesting to see where it would brake loose. The sound of the engine is “piped” in for a more dynamic feel and it gives you just enough engine noise and excitement without being too loud. But, it does add to the driving experience. The car blew my mind. I kept thinking, my God is this a great car. Over and over, it is just so balance. The right amount of everything in the right place at the right time. And, the drivability. Some might say that the car is not “raw” enough or loud enough but I do not think that was the goal of Acura. The car feels like a Ferrari 488 with the comforts of an Audi R8 and it just works. And it works well. It is not as violent as a Lamborghini Huracan in corsa mode, it is kind of in a niche all to itself, a sleeper supercar of sorts with a little six-cylinder, it is awesome. I had the opportunity to run it on a private track for a few hours and it just pulls and pulls. Back and forth I went through the gears with enough space to get into the high triple digits and it was like clockwork. Launch control and then through as many gears as I could as quickly as I could and it was as linear as could be. The temperature never moved, the car never lost power, it just kept going and going and going. Driving to and from the track that day and all the driving on the track, I easily put 300 miles on the car and it wanted more. The NSX ran perfectly. What is my takeaway about the NSX? It blew my mind. It is truly a world class supercar that probably does not receive the accolades it deserves. It is a drivers car with great refinement that is meant to please. It is fast, balanced, light, stops great, turns great and has everything to need to be more than comfortable. It is probably highly underrated and should receive a lot more attention. It is classically understated, but I think maybe that is what Acura wanted, to again be in a class all by themselves. Those that are “in the know” are “in the know.” Go drive one...

SupercarSunday NSX Marque Day Article and Photos by Dee D' Orazio

To paraphrase the Rolling Stone’s lyrics “They come in colors everywhere… They’re like a rainbow”! Well, on Sunday Feb. 18th almost every color of the Acura NSX you could imagine congregated at Pierce College for the 2nd Annual NSX Supercar Sunday event. Sure, there was Formula red, Berlina black and Grand Prix white representing the Gen I (’91-’05) models. But, when a few 2019 Gen II’s rolled in, we were treated to a taste of some special new colors… Curva red, Casino white pearl and the brightest of all, Thermal Orange Pearl…yes, “the future’s so bright you gotta to wear shades”! But, NSX Supercar Sunday is more than colors, exhaust smells and cacophonous sounds! It’s about a loyal tribe of owners who love their superbly designed, well-handling beautiful works of automotive art! And, the new 2019 Gen II Acura NSX takes that sentiment to an

even higher place in a car lover’s world. I know because I had a chance to drive it at the Honda Performance Experience in Mojave, CA. Whether on the highspeed oval or the winding road course, the new 2019 NSX has an intuitive sense that adapts to any challenge, taking the straight-aways and the curves with equal doses of aggressive handling, finesse and speed. For my money, I’d purchase one as it proves to be a race car on the track and a daily driver for the street, all-in-one! Although the attendance list of 30-plus owners was merely half of last year’s, there was a hardcore gathering of aficionados proudly displaying their cherished New Sportcar eXperimental cars (thus, the acronym NSX). After about three hours of admiration and sharing technical information for modifying, upgrading or just maintaining one’s passionate possession, we all assembled in orderly parade fashion for the traditional but spir-

ited drive through Malibu Canyon. Leading the caravan was none other than our resident PS4 F1 2016 fanatic Greg Williams in his 1997 Berlina black NSX. Other participants included several American Honda Motor Company, Inc. staff members in their stunning new 2019 models. We took a muchtraveled route frequented by local sports car enthusiasts over to Mulholland Dr. up the serpentine curves of Stunt Rd. to the crest of the Santa Monica mountains for a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean to the south and the Conejo Valley to the north. Then, we meandered down Piuma Rd. to Las Virgenes Cyn. Rd. and coursed our way through some beautiful winding Malibu chicanes eventually ending up at our brunch destination. Once at Lavaggio – The Art of Auto Detailing – and just making it under the threat of rain - we were greeted with a lavish buffet spread of sandwiches, salads,

fruits and drinks to satisfy and quench our growling appetites. If you haven’t yet utilized the services provided by this stateof-the-art detailing facility, you should do yourself a favor. Your car wants to look good for you! And, you’ll look good driving it when it’s done! Thanks again to all the NSX owners who contributed to a great NSX Day but especially Matt Sloustcher at American Honda Motor Company, Inc. for providing the delicious brunch and Dustin Troyan for organizing another Supercar Sunday Event! 1st Ever SupercarSunday Sp

A Ford Focus may not be the first....or even last car you think of when you hear the word "SuperCar"., but that didn't stop SuperCarSunday from hosting Ford Foci and several other sport compact cars at the 1st ever SuperCarSunday Sport Compact Invitational. More than 40 Sport Compact cars from Subaru, Ford, Mitsubishi, Mini, Honda, and many more came to display their cars and hang out with like-minded individuals. Everyone got along great and respected the event and followed the rules. The rain rolled in and out throughout the event, but that didn't seem to bother any of the Sport Compact owners, but it did keep several of the SuperCar owners away. +1 for Sport Compacts. About an hour before the caravan, a group left to go cruise the local mountains before heading to Lavaggio The Art of Auto Detailing

in Agoura Hills, CA, and the rest followed suite shortly thereafter. Once at Lavaggio, Everyone scurried inside to escape the rain and enjoyed some delicious food. What I found most interesting was to find out that several people posted in Supercar groups that they planned on boycotting the show because "Supercar Sunday had gone rice". Well, their loss. This group behaved themselves, no one revved their car to show how big their....wallets... are, no one talked trash about anyone else's car, and everyone was just pleasant. This attitude from the Classic car community as well as the Supercar community only hurts them. Sport Compact cars aren't going away. It's the bread and butter of the automotive aftermarket industry. It's also where many muscle car and super car owners started out. With the attitude of not wanting to have

Sport Compact owners at an event only devalues classic cars as there is a negative association with them in the younger generations. We don't want them. With the classic car generation getting up there in years, it's only a matter of time before values start to plummet, and the cars just become unwanted. Don't be mad when you see a '67 Chevy running an Evo drivetrain or a Classic Camaro running an Ecoboost 4-banger. Enough ranting. It was a kick-ass day, all those attended were excited to meet so many new faces in person and not just on Instagram,. The weather could have been better, but that doesn't make much of a difference when you're FWD or AWD. +1 more for Sport Compacts.

Crespi High School and The Crespi Dads Club Presents the

2nd Annual

Crespi Car Show Saturday, April 6th 10am 3pm

Last year the Crespi Dads Club (CDC) reached out to the San Fernando Valley’s community of car collector enthusiasts to set up the inaugural Crespi Car Show and the response was amazing! With the help of the community, the Crespi Dads Club PIT CREW (comprised of Peter Andrews, Tommy Hall, Joshua Ott, Nick Franchino, Darren Mitchell and Dean Crescenzi and many other grease monkeys) came together and planned an exciting event with amazing cars, food and music in a family environment on the Crespi Campus in Encino,Ca. With help and guidance from Dustin Troyan (Lavaggio Detail Center & Supercar Sundays) and Allan Donatech (The Chevy Club) as well as many friends of the CDC, they scoured the valley handing out invites and registration forms to get as many cool cars to attend the show. At high noon, Chairmen Pete Andrews and Tommy Hall called for all participants to start and rev their engines, and the sound of over fifty hot rods singing in unison, was something that had to be witnessed in person to fully appreciate. The goal of the Crespi Car Show is to help our kids to become more knowledgeable about cars and the passion we have for them. Learning how to look under the hood to check your oils and fluids, to change a spare tire if you had to, and just to better understand the cars they drive and how they have evolved to today’s modern machines that go 060 in a blink of an eye. We thank our participants willingness to share information about their cars and how they got started, which helped us to accomplish our goal and we look forward to another successful year at the Crespi Car Show! Bring out the whole family for a day of fun and festivities @ Crespi High School (ALL PROCEEDS GO TO CRESPI HIGH SCHOOL!)

Automotive, Artistic Passion &

Attention to Detail Drive Michael Lydon From Signature Works of Art to the Most Amazing Automotive Garage Makeovers, Michael Lydon is Uniquely Suited to Bring His Meticulous Clientele’s Automotive Dreams to Life.

Article and Photos provided by Craig Melone

He’s a talented contemporary artist with a keen eye for detail and a knack for creating amazing Exotic and Supercar luxury garage spaces. His unique, artistic flair was recognized by friends, family and grown-ups at a young age. Michael Lydon is an all American, midwestern boy from Chicago’s South side. He discovered his passion for art, cars and design - everything that reflects form, function, beauty and freedom - early in life. At three years old, Lydon was mesmerized by his neighbor’s matching pair of 1974 electric blue Corvette Stingray Convertibles. One was finished with a black top and interior (his) and the other with white (hers). The exquisite lines the design held toward other cars captured Michael’s imagination. Since that day on, it seems motor oil has been pumping through his veins. The same neighbor’s father drove a giant Cadillac, which might as well have been a Rolls Royce to young gear head. Michael helped polish the cars while enjoying the automotive talk and shared passion. By the age of six, he could name all the cars coming down the street, their cost and their stats just by glancing at their headlights. Neighbor and Mother of the matching Vettes, Mrs. Murvine was something akin to the little old lady from Pasadena. Young Lydon, would jump into her son’s Vette with Murvine and zip off to the market, horsepower rumbling with top down. He was drawn to this family’s fast lane, fancy-free lifestyle and passion for the automobile. This is where Lydon’s unusual

drivenworld...28

car lover and art lover passions converge. Still with us at over 100 years young, Lydon has many memories of Mrs. Murvine taking him down to the Art Institute of Chicago. She introduced Michael to the great masters such as Picasso, Warhol, Chagall, Monet and Van Gough. These earliest of influences stuck with him forever and Lydon’s Mother Joanne would often bring the young protégé to countless estate sales in upscale neighborhoods that he believes definitely sharpened and refined his design esthetic. Michael says, “I would often rearrange the furniture in our house as a child to suit my liking.” The die was cast. All these influences stuck with the budding artist. Lydon continually kept true to his passions and dreams throughout his life, later leading him down the road to the sunny west coast of California. Throughout his teens and twenties, Lydon constantly created art which was mostly renderings and paintings of dream cars and exotic dream destinations. Over the years Michael has owned his own Art gallery, his work has been featured in Times Square. He has been published multiple times while enticing seasoned art collectors everywhere. His works have been compared to artists including Jackson Pollack and Damien Hirst. Influential to Michael’s artistic career was friend and late legendary folk artist Gregory Warmack, (aka) Mr. Imagination. Warmack has over fourteen pieces in the permanent collection at the Smithsonian Institute and has exhibited his work in almost every major museum around the world. Warmack strongly urged Lydon to pursue his artistic

dreams and insisted that he approach some serious Galleries on Chicago’s North Shore gallery district. Amazingly a leading staple gallery immediately accepted Michael’s art into having his first gallery showing. Lydon developed a unique technique that captured the attention of the art scene’s mainstream market. While detailing a red Mercedes, he observed how the machine spread the wax up and down across the finish, creating a mesmerizing pattern. Naturally, he began to spin paint in this new technique. He literally reinvented the wheel on how paint is applied to the canvas. His buffer became his brush and the rest was history. His original style caught the interest of prominent art galleries, auction houses and collectors far and wide. Michael’s art has been auctioned at Bonhams & Butterfields. Celebrities such as Supermodel Gisele Bundchen, Actor Jon Lindstrum and retired Tonight Show host and avid car collector Jay Leno own a few Lydon originals. After building up a brass reputation among L.A.’s auto elite, Michael merged his two core passions of Art and Automobiles into the Luxury Garage Interior Design World. Lydon has detailed some of the worlds most desirable cars ever built including $10M+ Pebble Beach, Peterson Museum level type cars. He’s worked on everything from Buggattis to Ferraris, from Dusenbergs to Gullwings and Enzo’s. In fact, when Lydon first relocated to California at age 27 he detailed a few of Steve McQueen’s personal cars, brought to him by the legend’s son, Chad.

Wanting to utilize his vast creativity in the car world somehow Lydon started his own Luxury Garage Interior design firm. His first garage make over project happened around 2000 for one of his detail clients for whom he cared for his Ferrari Collection. Michael noticed one thing in common with his wealthy clientele - bland garages with no character. Michael envisioned designs and upgrades taking the garage spaces to next level. “The sky's the limit and no two garages should be exactly alike” the designer says. There are as many car owners personalities

as there are cars. Auto enthusiasts have different needs and their garage spaces should reflect their automobile interest, being its Italian supercars, VW Beetles, American Classics, Harley Davidsons, etc. The overall garage design should tastefully complement the home’s exterior style and motif while seamlessly accommodating their needs, whether it be simple organized storage, workshop, or a swanky man cave where clients can entertain their auto guests or just spend some time waxing / polishing their pride and joy while listening to some Sinatra perhaps.

One of Lydon recently completed design projects was for the legendary Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini mechanic, Franco Barbuscia of Franco’s European Sports Cars who has appeared Jay Leno’s Garage many times. Franco “The Carfather” was recently featured in the Driven World December 2018 issue. Lydon brought the legendary mechanic’s shop to the next level, giving it a sharp sleek Italian modern look inspired by the Lamborghini Aventador’s lines, the result now rivals some of L.A.s leading exotic dealerships and shops. That same refined eye naturally

drawn to all things beautiful that took notice of the vintage Corvette's exquisite lines over forty years earlier, along with the sleek taste and style developed from his early influences of design / fine arts impressions are applied in pleasing some of L.A.’s premiere elite car collectors with the swankiest garages around town. Lydon’s clientele constantly boast on how Michael’s creative driven services enhance their automobile lifestyles in so many ways. Today Michael thoroughly enjoys working closely with his clients to create unique new dimensions to their auto enthusiast lifestyle.

So if you’re looking to enhance your personal automotive lifestyle, acquire one of his collectable artworks or just catch up on his constantly evolving art career feel free to reach out and if you see him, approach the evolving Artist in person at one of L.A.’s weekend car shows or art events. The Porsche Club of America Concours d'Elegance Westlake Village Hyatt Hosts PCA Zone 8’s Awesome Porsche’s Article by Steve Geldman Photos by Steve Geldman, Image Photo Motorsports @ImagePhotoMotorsports

There’s no denying that America loves the automobile. There are hundreds of clubs throughout the world dedicated to cars. As an example, one of many favorite clubs seen each week at Supercar Sunday is Classic Chevys of Southern California (CCSC). The members of CCSC are true car people who have an amazing passion and camaraderie to motorsports. One important attribute common to all car club organizations is written in their Charters, the goal of always giving back to the community. DrivenWorld’s Editor-In-Chief, Dustin Troyan, will easily attest to that statement. The Porsche Club of America (PCA) is also one of these clubs. PCA was founded in 1955 by Bill Sholar, a commercial artist living in Washington D.C. who owned a 1953 356 Coupe. Sholar had the idea of holding meetings at his home with other 356 owners (the only model Porsche produced at the time) to discuss the positive and the not-so-positive aspects of driving the infrequently encountered car. That was the start of a car club that has now grown to over 130,000 members and is the largest single-brand club in the world. PCA today, within Canada and the U.S, there are 14 geographic Zones that maintain a total of 145 Regions, known as ‘Chapters’ in most other clubs. Zone 8, who is responsible for 14 Regions, covers the southern halves of California and Nevada as well the entire state of Arizona.

Overall, PCA holds over 3,500 events and activities each year so therefore this humongous size club is best known for membership participation. Among these activities, and perhaps one of the most attended, is Concours d'Elegance. PCA Zone 8 recently held their 2019 Concours d'Elegance locally at the beautiful Westlake Village Hyatt. That my friends, is where this story begins. One common trait most all car enthusiasts have in common, no matter if it’s Pro-Street, Muscle, Classic, Hot/Rat Rod, Exotic, etc., is having our ride look exceptionally cool and perhaps even exhibiting at a car event so others can enjoy. Without this passion, Supercar Sunday and hundreds of Cars & Coffee meets held every weekend would not exist. The Porsche owner also has this trait. Many who have put all their blood, sweat, and tears into their German designed ‘work of art’ seek rewards, literally. The Concours d'Elegance offers them this opportunity. They register their sports car for the event and then spend countless hours cleaning metal and leather with microfiber towels, Q-Tips and toothbrushes. They arrive the day of the event with a Porsche that shows beyond showroom quality. All this effort in hopes for a ribbon or trophy, or both, in recognition of the work they put into cleaning and restoring a vehicle. For many not into cars, this all sounds crazy, but for car people, especially those taking the time to read DrivenWorld, they totally get it!

A book can be written to describe how a Concours is judged. In brief, this year’s PCA Zone 8 Concours was separated into 5 entry Divisions: Wash & Shine, Ubergang, Street, Unrestored and Full. During registration for the event, each owner chooses which Division (level of judging) they would like to enter. During the judging, each area of the vehicle is closely inspected and points are deducted for the smallest of things, such as a hair found on the interior carpet or a small blade of grass on the brake pedal. Final points are calculated which ultimately determine the winners. Divisions Defined Wash & Shine: Minimum inspection; Judging is limited to the exterior and interior of the vehicle. Engine, storage areas and undercarriage are excluded. Ubergang: Wash & Shine PLUS includes all storage areas for inspection Street: Ubergang PLUS Engine inspection Unrestored: Street but vehicles must be 20 years of age or older; Entire vehicle must be minimum 75% original Full: Street PLUS Undercarriage; inspection of entire vehicle A total of 19 recognition awards were presented during this year’s Concours. Congratulations go to these ‘top of their Division’ Porsche Club of America Zone 8 award winners! Wash & Shine - Aaron Mascarro, PCA San Gabriel Region; 1989 911 Carrera

Ubergang - Billy & Beeber Clevenger, PCA Grand Prix (Long Beach) Region; 2011 Boxster Spyder Street - Richard Nuttall, PCA Santa Barbara Region; 1969 912 Coupe Unrestored - Tara Brundrett, PCA Santa Barbara Region; 1987 928 S4 Full - Michael Benson, PCA Santa Barbara Region; 1959 356A Coupe A final trophy was handed out to Joe Maxwell from PCA’s Los Angeles Region for his 1973 911 Carrera. This special ‘Chairman’s Choice Award’ was not based on points, but a personal favorite by this event’s PCA Zone 8 Concours Chairman, Herman Rijfkogel. From Prius to Pagani, American classic to late model exotic, all automotive enthusiasts have a desire to drive a ride we feel is cool and exciting to us. It doesn’t matter what type of vehicle that turns us on nor is it important to win an award. What is important is enjoying life and always remember to give back to others, even if it’s as simple as showing off your vehicle at a Concours d'Elegance for others to enjoy. Footnote: Special thanks to Tara Brundrett, PCA Santa Barbara Region, for the assistance in explaining PCA Concours Divisions and associated information.

DRIVE

Article and Photos by Dustin Troyan

Sometimes you forget how much fun a drive can be. When Lamborghini North Los Angeles contacted me to put a drive together, I was in. The team there are all great friends of mine and they are so very passionate. I new it was going to a lot of fun. The goal of the event was to get about twenty cars/owners together and just go out for a causal scenic tour of the Santa Monica Mountains in a leisurely fashion. This event was about the people, more than the cars. Dave Melton who is the GM of Lamborghini North Los Angeles Service in Canoga Park is no stranger to exotic cars, exotic car events and all things mechanical. We have worked together over the years on so many different events, it is always fun. Same thing goes for Lamborghini North Los Angeles General Manager Ron Giger. Another passionate guy, we have worked together for half a decade on this project or that project and we always have a great time. So the idea of putting together a little event with great people, it was just up my alley. Truth be told, I don’t think any of us really considered it work, it was more of getting friends together to share a wonderful experience. That is what it is all about! The day of the event, the exotic car owners met at the Lamborghini North Los Angeles Service Center in Canoga Park and were welcomed by a catered breakfast. We hung out, talked about cars, the Lamborghini Techs offered consultations and tech inspections for those who wanted them. Many of the guest new each other and it was a long overdue reunion of car enthusiasts. When we had concluded the tech inspections and breakfast it was time for the drive.... As we headed out of the service center and onto Topanga Canyon Blvd., we stopped traffic. It is amazing how much attention exotic cars get as well as the enthusiasm for them. It was smiles all around as we paraded across the valley and headed to the Santa Monica Mountains. We drove for about an hour, the twisting and turning roads. There was just the right amount of open road and wind in our hair to enjoy some of the most scenic roads in the world. The roar of V8, V10 and V12 engines, what a wonderful noise. As we ended the drive portion of the event we arrived at Lavaggio in Agoura Hills. Lamborghini North Los Angeles had a catered lunch waiting for the guests from Bellini Bistro. We had parking reserved for all of the cars and all of the guests were very pleased. A new Aventador S Roadster and Huracan on display, the mood, was festive, friendly and everybody was pleased. After so much rain we finally had a chance to exercise the cars and the enjoy the roads with friends. Everybody was hugging, laughing, sharing photos, taking videos and enjoying lunch. It was absolutely perfect. As the event concluded everybody was grateful and had one question...when is the next event? It is already in the works!
