The Reverse Bucket List Article and Photos by Hot Rod Jay Santos “Bucket List” - A number of experiences or achievements that a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime. The term “Bucket List” is well known but actually relatively new. The first time that I first heard of it was when the 2007 movie called “Bucket List” starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman came out. Since then, it’s quite common to hear someone lay out what “his or her” bucket list is. Maybe it’s to travel all over the world to places that they’ve only dreamed of, or to do those unique activities they haven’t yet been able to do. Whatever each one of you may describe as your bucket list, there’s no doubt that each one will be quite unique and different. A few months ago, a very good friend of mine named Elvin took a giant step towards his own bucket list. And as I’ve said before in my other articles, “Everybody has a story”, here’s Elvin’s. I’ve known Elvin for over 15 years and was lucky to meet him while I was working. He’s probably one of the nicest, most generous guys that I know. He’ll offer to help you before you even get the chance to ask him. The most interesting thing about him is that he’s an old time drag racer. Back in the day, he used to drag race at the infamous Los Angeles County Raceway. For those of you that aren’t familiar with the track, LACR was a motor sport facility located in Palmdale California, which featured an NHRA sanctioned ¼ mile drag strip, which opened up in 1964 and unfortunately held its last race on July 29, 2007. Elvin frequently raced there before an abrupt end when he crashed his nitrous powered Mazda RX7 into the wall. Shaken up but still hungry for the crazy on edge rush of drag racing, he yanked the nitrous injected Chevy based power plant from his mangled RX7 and stuffed it into a fiberglass bodied tube chassis Chevy Vega. Now some of you may remember the short wheelbased Vega of the early 70’s. These small lightweight cars were a favorite for the grudge racers and are making their way back to the strip even today. What caught Elvin’s eye was the bright yellow paint that covered the compact body. Since Elvin has a heavy work schedule as a Longshoreman, he parted out the work to some friends to get the car constructed. As fate would have it, the Vega was put together in record time. Once again, Elvin was ready to hit the drag strip at LACR to see what his new race car could do. His first trip back was memorable. As he lined up and entered the water box, he pressed the button for the line lock and pushed his foot down on the gas pedal. The huge drag slicks spin and smoke engulfs the rear of his car. Creeping forward he bumps in and triggers the pre-stage lights. Pushing and holding down the trans-brake button he presses the gas pedal to the floor as he waits for the last amber bulb to light. He releases the trans-brake button and the Vega shoots forward like a rocket with the front wheels in the air. Immediately, he backs off the gas pedal for a moment to allow the front end to come back down to earth. Once again he smashes the pedal to the floor and the Vega is a flash across the drag strip. Now let me stress this fact to everyone. I’ve heard this story countless times from the man with the yellow

Vega. His account has been extremely consistent, other than the miles per hour that was printed on his time slip. He’s gone from 160 mph to 140 mph on a few occasions. So for arguments sake, let’s just say he went 150 mph! If you’ve ever drag raced before and have done at least a 100 mph in 660 feet (1/8th mile), then you would know you’re on a fine edge of victory or disaster. If you’ve gone over 100 mph in a short wheelbased car then you know everything is magnified. In Elvin’s own words - “It felt like I was on the edge of death, with just barely any feeling of being in control. I never saw the guy next to me. When I lifted off the throttle at the finish line, I was scared as hell! I was so scared and shaken, that after I picked up my time slip, I pulled the Vega right up on the trailer, strapped her down and she’s sat there on the trailer in my driveway ever since!” Let me quote Elvin’s last statement again, “I pulled the Vega right up on the trailer, strapped her down and she’s sat there on the trailer in my driveway ever since!” It’s been 13 years since that Vega fired up. Every time that I’m at Elvin’s house I look at the Vega, then I look at Elvin and I tell him he needs to get the car running. I explained to him that I don't want his motor to seize. I offer to help and to come over anytime he wants to see some progress. Elvin smiles and says, “Ok, we will!” Now this goes on for years, but I can say with confidence that my continued assault on his unwillingness is slowly working. Fortunately, since I compete in the NHRA Summit Drag Racing Series, I used it to my advantage and have invited Elvin multiple times to be part of my pit crew. Each time he went, we would end our day in the same manner – unload my drag car and head to his favorite restaurant, “Yard House". Dinner and a few drinks later, all conversation is about how fun it was at the track. But, the main discussion was about the Vega and what I could do to help him get back to the drag strip. After repeated attempts I realize that as long as the Vega is on his driveway, I’m never going to get to work on it. I had to come up with a new plan. I tell him that I’ll bring my truck over and I’ll pick up his car and trailer and park it at my house. This will make it easier for me to work on it, plus I have all my tools there! My idea works and we agree that the next weekend Elvin will bring it over himself. Now let me tell you this, Elvin is very busy. He has a tendency to forget plans that he’s made and on a few occasions has done that to me. I’m a little skeptical that he’ll actually show up, but deep down inside I’m really hoping he will. As the next weekend comes closer, I’m anticipating him coming. But by Friday, I still haven’t heard from him and I fear the worse. Feeling defeated, I bet my girlfriend Lisa lunch that he’s not going to show up. She thinks he will and agrees to the bet. Saturday comes around and nothing. Sunday morning creeps in and still no call from Elvin. I head off to Supercar Sunday and then to my girlfriend’s house. I really don’t think he’s going to show up because now it’s starting to get later in the day. As I’m leaving her house, I announce that I’ll start thinking of where I want to go for lunch. She replies with “It’s still early!" By the time I get home the sun is just beginning to set. Then, all of a sudden I get a call on my phone. I look and it’s Elvin! He tells me that he’s on his way, and to make room on my driveway for the trailer. Shocked and quite happy, I tell him “Well alright”! Sure enough, 20 minutes later Elvin pulls up. With a giant smile on his face he asks me where he should park it. I point to the spot on my driveway and guide him into it. He gets out of his truck and immediately I tell him that I can’t believe he brought his car. He just laughs and says, “I told you I would!” I do a quick check on the Vega and then ask him for the trailer ramps so we can unload the car. He looks at me with a puzzled face and tells me that he forgot them. I shake my head and tell him that we can use the ones I have. I take another visual around the trailer and can see that all the tires are flat on the Vega. I also see that he’s missing one of the tires from his tandem trailer and ask him about it. Once again Elvin smiles and tells me a little story of what happened on the way over to my house. “Since my trailer isn’t registered and pretty much illegal, I decided to take all the side streets to your house. When I was coming down Oso Ave., I was driving pretty slow. All of a sudden I looked out my window and I noticed this wheel rolling along side of me and then into the curb. Wait a minute I thought, that’s my wheel from the trailer! I pulled over and luckily the tire didn’t hit anybody or another car. I jumped out, grabbed the tire and threw it in the back of my truck. That’s why I’m missing one wheel from my trailer!” We both stand there and laugh hysterically. Knowing that the tires on the Vega are all flat, it’s going to be a challenge to get the car off the trailer. Also, we don’t have the right ramps and the shortened rear end of the Vega is going to cause another issue. Only 25% of the huge rear slicks are going to be on the ramps as it rolls down. Carefully, we try to roll her back but it doesn’t budge. Elvin’s in the driver’s seat and I keep teasing him to stop pressing on the brakes. He yells back at me “I’m not, maybe the transmission is seized or something?” I tell him to make sure it’s in neutral, but once again it doesn’t move. By now, it’s pretty dark outside. I bring out some lights and Elvin decides to crawl underneath the trailer so he can disconnect the driveshaft. My neighbors Lori and Josh see all the lights and come over to see what we’re doing. Lori takes a trip down memory lane and tells us about how her mom had a Vega. Josh on the other hand is more interested in why it’s not rolling and how we’re going to get it off the trailer. Elvin, who stands about 6’4”, has twisted his body under and between the trailer and rear end of the car and is shouting out requests for wrenches and more lights. I accommodate him and he quickly removes the U-joint bolts and disconnects the driveshaft. Once again, we try to roll the car back but it still doesn’t move. I break out my Come-Along but it still is stuck like a rock. “What the heck!” I yell. I give in and tell Elvin that we can just park the trailer on my front lawn. I’ll check it out tomorrow and figure out what’s going on. He agrees, and he backs the trailer in the yard. We unhook her and she finds her resting place. Defeated, we all say goodnight and look forward to what the next day brings. Monday comes quickly and I’m really looking forward to figuring out why the Vega isn’t moving. I crawl underneath the trailer and now that we have daylight, I can immediately see what was holding up the car. The front part of the frame is stuck in front of the trailer edge. Even though we filled the leaking front tires with whatever air they would hold, they didn’t raise the front of the frame high enough to clear the trailer! This is good news. We might get lucky and have no issues with the transmission. Even though the Vega hadn’t been started or driven in 13 years, Elvin had her covered rather well. When I removed the engine hood, the motor was surprisingly clean. There were only some leaves and rat droppings on the intake manifold. Over the next few days, my first step is to clean her up and go over all the electrical and fluids. A new battery and a full inspection show’s that everything looks good. I check the ignition, fuel pump and electric water pump and they all work. The only issue I find is with the electric radiator fan, which ends up being a loose ground. Elvin ran all the fuel out of the fuel tank, so on the surface nothing is gummed up! Next up is the most important question… “The Big Question”. Will the engine turn by hand? I would like to tell you, but you’re going to have to wait for my next article.

The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray The first production mid-engine Corvette

To many, it was a surprise when Chevrolet announced that the next generation of the Corvette was going to be mid-engine. People howled, and yelled, that this would ruin the legacy that is arguably America’s greatest sports car. Among the die-hard Corvette enthusiast, a mid-engine Corvette isn’t unfamiliar. Dating back to the 60’s, the first endeavor into a Chevrolet with the engine mounted behind the driver, came in the form of the CERV I, which was designed by Zora Arkus-Duntov. The CERV I was a prototype to test a higher level of performance, and used a fuel injected V8 producing 350 horsepower, numbers that fall short to the recently revealed C8 Corvette. Oh, how times have changed, and in my honest opinion, for the better! Chevrolet has stated that with the current generation of Corvette with the engine in a FR layout (Front-engine and rear-wheel drive), the platform had reached its limit, and in order to move forward in the future with the car, a complete redesign would be necessary. With the booming sound of a futuristic cargo plane, faint glimpses of an intoxicating red draped over a sharp, and dynamic silhouette, the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray ran to the stage during the world-wide unveiling and made fans out of the nonbelievers. In its 67th year of production, the eighth generation in the Chevrolet Corvette lineage can only be described as a milestone for the American manufacture. After a handful of one-off prototypes, the C8 will be a full production car for the company with its engine mounted very low, behind the driver. Though this model introduces a lot of new features, such as a two-inch nose lift, heated steering wheel, memory seats, and wireless device charging, there are several that are carried over from the previous generations. The body is still a plastic and composite material, there is ample storage in now the front, and in the rear for luggage and golf clubs, and the roof is removable and can be stored in the trunk. The 6.2-liter LT2 V8 is

essentially an LT1, as the bore and stroke remain the same. The subtle changes are required from the engine being mounted in the middle of the chassis. The engine now breaths from the rear, and the exhaust manifolds are stainless, instead of cast iron. The LT2 uses a dry sump oil lubrication system, with the reservoir mounted

on the front side of the engine. This allows the engine to sit very low, so low that the valve covers sit lower than the 20-inch rear wheels. When paired with the factory sport exhaust, the power plant puts out 495 horsepower, and 470 lb-ft of torque. The power is put through a Tremec eight speed dual clutch

transaxle that is a shift by wire. Another first for the sports car icon, as a manual transmission won’t be available for the infamous sports car. Since this transmission can shift faster than any human, a 2.8 0-60 time is said to be capable. Using the configuration, and losing the need of a transmission tunnel, the center is

completely enclosed, which increases the structural strength adding to the 50 percent gain in chassis rigidity of the C8 over the C7. Chevrolet has provided an ample amount of options to build the C8 of your dreams, providing twelve exterior color options, six interior color schemes, and three

different seats to hug you in the corners. The specific trim levels are 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT. The top of the line package comes in the FE4 that adds on to the Z51 Performance package with magnetorheological dampers. The 2020 C8 Corvette Stingray is scheduled to begin production later this year, and pricing

starts below $60,000 MSRP. The Chevrolet Corvette has always been the sports car for the everyday working man, and now that the Corvette has evolved into a mid-engine sports car, with exotic like styling, and performance, it just very well be the exotic car for the everyday person.

LAVAGGIO THE ART OF AUTO DETAILING

When I first heard of Lavaggio, I didn’t believe what I was told. “The most amazing detailing facility ever built!” that was the quote. Years ago, I had an auto detailing business and all of us know, auto detailing is a bay or a trailer. So, when I heard about Lavaggio, I just wrote it off. Over the next couple of months, I kept hearing about Lavaggio and it always followed with “you must go see it, you will not believe it.” So, curiosity got the best of me and I headed over. Exiting the 101 fwy at Reyes Adobe, I was told I could not miss it, “turn right off the freeway and make the first right onto Canwood St. and you will see it on your left.” So off the freeway I went, turned right and right onto Canwood Street. But, something must be wrong. All I see is a spa or a medical building, everything else is residential. There is no detail center around here? So, I drove back and forth a few times and I kept seeing the Lavaggio waterfall and signage by the street, but where was the facility? All I see is this stunning building that is reminiscent of a Tuscan villa. So, I turned into the medical building or villa or

whatever it was and my jaw dropped, IT WAS LAVAGGIO! A little intimidated, I pulled into the parking lot. I didn’t understand this was the detailing facility? I walked up the marble steps and entered automotive nirvana. Allow me to assure you with 100% certainty; there is no other detail facility on the planet like Lavaggio. Everything I was told was true, and more. Lavaggio is an entirely new concept in auto detailing. It is not a bay or a body shop it is quite possibly the nicest automotive venue that has ever been created. Lavaggio is dedicated to one simple principle: Exceed your expectations. To fully understand Lavaggio, you must visit. No expense has been spared in providing your vehicle and yourself with the finest experience possible. So what makes Lavaggio so special? It begins when you pull onto the property. As you pull in the lull of waterfalls immediately puts you at ease. As you pull up, Lavaggio’s service advisor, Gabriel greets you with a friendly smile and an extremely high level of expertise. Once you have agreed upon a service, you enter Lavaggio’s state-of-theart building. The concierge greets you, not unlike a five star hotel. She asks if you are “staying” or if you would like to be “transported” back to your home or office. Now here is where it starts to get very interesting. Included in the

price of every service is a meal made to order and a ride home. Do you need me to repeat that? You pull up to get your vehicle washed or detailed and you have your choice of a freshly made meal and/or a ride back to the office! NO EXTRA CHARGE! If it is the case that you decide you are going to stay at Lavaggio while your vehicle is being cleaned, you have your choice of relaxing on their stunning patio, watching the flat-screen TV inside, using one of three IMacs or your own wireless laptop or device. And, this is only a small portion of the facility! If it is the case that you have work to be done or want a little more privacy, just head upstairs and there is a desk and a private sitting area as well as offices that are available to you. At no extra charge! Ok, ok, sounds great, but if I am getting a ride home and a return pick up to get my vehicle and a complimentary meal, this place must cost a fortune right? WRONG! That is the most amazing part of the Lavaggio experience; it is priced at a level that anyone can afford! In fact, it is priced better than most other quality detail shops and mobile detailers. Throw in the lunch, amenities and pampering, it is a no-brainer. Back to exceeding expectations, the base service is the Lavaggio Signature Wash. Now, what you have to understand here is that their wash is everybody else’s mini-detail or detail. That signature wash which is expertly executed by

detailers, is fully customized to each vehicle, meaning that it is not a conveyor or a line, it is two detail professionals using mineral free water (R-O water) in a dedicated wash bay utilizing the finest products available. After the car is washed, it is pulled into the detail bay. Oh, the detail bay. Again, I assure you with 100% certainty that you have never seen such a detail bay or work area (see next page). Your vehicle is pulled into the bay and the detailers go to work on the inside and exterior of the vehicle. Your floor mats are put through a state-of-the-art washing and sanitizing machine. Your steering wheel, shifter and door handle are sanitized. From your wheels to your windows to your gas door, the attention to detail on the Signature Wash far exceeds the norm. To ensure the paint looks great, the detailers finish the vehicle with a liberal portion of detail spray. Yes, this is the wash! Upon completion, your vehicle is inspected three times. THREE TIMES! This ensures that Lavaggio lives up to its promise: Exceeding your expectations. If this is just the wash, image the detail! Also worth noting are the big, soundproof bay windows, which are incorporated into the structure. Every step of the way you can observe the skilled technicians perfecting your vehicle! Nothing is hidden and the entire process is there for you to see. The entire approach at Lavaggio is to ensure that you are 100% comfortable with every aspect of your experience and the services

being rendered on your vehicle. When I tell you that you have to experience Lavaggio, you really must. I believe it actually takes a few visits to really understand the scope of what Lavaggio has to offer and the vision that has been recognized. Lavaggio is truly redefining auto detailing. When one publishes a magazine, space is a precious commodity. I figured I would dedicate three pages to Lavaggio, but I could not tell the whole Lavaggio story in just three pages. I could actually dedicate a whole magazine to really elaborate on the level of detail at Lavaggio, but if you are a car guy like me, check out this one of a kind detail bay. To detail properly, you must have an environment, which is conducive to detailing. Environmental factors like temperature, wind, fallout (overspray, dirt/dust in the air, other pollutants) all play a major role in the preparation, application and execution of detailing. At Lavaggio, the detail bay was designed to guarantee that Lavaggio had the perfect environment. From the climate controlled bay to the “clean room” air treatment system to remove dust and pollutants in the air, to the natural lighting, and the finest and most modern equipment, Lavaggio is truly one of a kind. The detail team at Lavaggio has been trained, retrained, trained again, some more training and are always training. Enough is never enough and to stay sharp, industry experts are in constant contact and are being flown in from all over the United States to ensure the Lavaggio team is current on all new techniques, products and information. At Lavaggio, detailing is more than detailing, it is keeping you and your

family healthy! Lavaggio has researched and found that there is a direct relationship between time spent in a car and illness. This is often attributed to contaminants in your vehicle. Research shows that if you eat in your vehicle, have kids or animals, your vehicle can be as dirty if not dirtier than your toilet. It’s true, Google it! To combat this, Lavaggio has taken a “health approach” and again, invested in training and equipment to kill germs and bacteria in your vehicle. The purpose of this “Health Approach” was simply that the Lavaggio management felt it was their responsibility to keep their guests and the guest’s families healthy. The lift in the corner. Yup, you go it, concours detailing. There was such a high demand from guests that wanted more than just the top and inside of their vehicles done, that Lavaggio decided to put in a lift with extra-low ramps (for the sports cars owners out there). Lavaggio offers concours detailing and under-carriage detailing. They offered story about a set of wheels that they were preparing for a guest. The wheels were to be put on a vintage Ferrari that was to head up to Concorso Italiano. So Lavaggio went to work on the wire wheels and the vintage tires. Having completed the “Concours wheel and tire service”, what did Lavaggio do? They called in a local certified concours judge and had them inspected prior to delivery to the client. The vehicle took a trophy! What types of vehicles frequent Lavaggio? On any given day, you will see a mom pull up in an SUV or a Prius owner pulling in. The irony is that most people think that Lavaggio is only for “certain cars”, but truth be told, every type of car imaginable pulls in on a daily basis. I have been there when a boat

pulled in, followed by a Carrera Gt, then a couple “soccer moms” in SUVs and then a Harley. Lavaggio was created to suit the needs of every type of vehicle owner and every type of vehicle. I have seen 4x4s covered in mud from weekend in the desert to real 440 6-pack Cudas to Hondas, Toyotas, Kias and everything else under the sun. Lavaggio is such a value and an experience, once you visit, you have found a new home. Lavaggio has also reached out to the car community. From offering their facility to car clubs and charitable foundations, to holding private events at to partnering with dealerships and manufacturers. Lavaggio has hosted guests like the Santa Barbara Porsche Club and parties and receptions from Hotchkis Suspensions, Lamborghini Aventador Launch parties with the Auto Gallery, Galpin Auto Sports Mustang drives, McLaren Beverly Hills test drives, Tesla test drives, and so on and so forth. Lavaggio is becoming a central hub for everything automotive. Back to the detailing. Lavaggio takes such great care of your vehicle and they take it so seriously, every vehicle is inspected three times by three different trained experts. The technicians wear white cloth gloves and lab coats. Upper management will even does “spot inspections” to ensure the highest level of work possible. And, within 48 hours, a follow up call is made to the guest to ensure that their experience was of the approval of the guest. At Lavaggio, the experience is in the details and they are in the detail business and trust me, it shows. Being very immersed in the automotive world, I have never come across such an organization and operation. Lavaggio has truly set a new bar that

will be very hard to replicate if it is even possible. Again, I have to stress, you have to visit the location to fully understand what has been created. The Platinum Club at Lavaggio: Lavaggio has had such great demand for a “yearly program”, that they came up with a concept called the “Platinum Club.” The Platinum Club is a yearly program in which you enroll your vehicle. The program allows you to get your vehicle unlimited Signature Washes. Yes, that does mean every day. It entitles you to a meal with every visit, concierge services, courtesy shuttle service, use of the business centers and offices, invitations to private events and product launches. It also entitles you to (4) Ultimate Details, A Lease Return Detail & A New Car Detail (in the case that you trade in your vehicle), VIP treatment. You might ask if anyone gets their car washed everyday and the answer is “yes”, they do. The value of just the washes (annually) once a week is well over $4,000.00, not including the Ultimate Details, the meal with each visit, the New vehicle and Lease return details and all of the amenities. The true value of this programs is somewhere over the $6,000.00 mark. But in classic Lavaggio style, they have priced the Platinum Club at $2,579.00 and even have payment options available to you. In essence, your vehicle is guaranteed to be clean and resale value or trade-in value is realized. I have personally enrolled two vehicles and have to tell you that it is the finest experience ever. I would suggest joining to everyone. For more info on Lavaggio & the Platinum Club contact Dustin Troyan 818-584-3240 www.lavaggio.net

Tips

For Maintaining & Protecting Your Ferrari From the Mattioli Automotive Group

DETAILING In addition to keeping a car looking its best, consistent detailing is an important step in protecting a vehicle’s finish. Contaminants such as dirt, pollen, tree sap, and bird droppings can scratch and deteriorate painted surfaces if left over long periods. Given the value of a Ferrari, It is important to ensure that “best practices” are followed when performing a car wash; here are just a few from Mattioli Automotive Group’s (MAG) very own detailing specialists. • Use the proper products: Ensure that the soap and other cleaning products being used have been formulated specifically for automotive use. Excessively strong chemicals and detergents will not only strip the wax off but can also dull the finish on paint and trim. • All Towels are not equal: Microfiber towels offer low friction and can absorb more than seven times their weight in water, making them less abrasive and more effective than other towels. It is best to use a separate towel for each function (i.e..washing, drying, applying chemicals, etc). Also, towels should never be used if they are contaminated or have fallen on the ground; washing your towels often will help ensure that they are free of debris. • Two bucket Technique: To help prevent the re-introduction of dirt and contaminants It is best to employ the “two bucket technique” when washing your car. One bucket should contain the diluted soap and a second bucket should have clean water. After each pass with the soap, rinse contaminants off of the sponge in the clean water before re-introducing into the soap solution again. • Nooks and Crannies: Dirt and water can gather in the seams of the doors, trunk, and hood. It is important to clean and dry these areas thoroughly to prevent dripping onto clean surfaces. • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Water evaporates quickly in direct sunlight which can result in watermarks. Is your Ferrari in need of a thorough and professional cleaning? Feel free to reach out to one of the MAG’s four service centers to schedule a complete detailing service. PROTECTIVE FILM Stones, road debris, chemical stains, and UV damage are all potential dangers when exposing your prized Ferrari to the road and the elements. But owners can save themselves from headaches and costly refinishing bills simply by installing protective film over their immaculate finish. This nearly invisible film can be applied just to the most vulnerable surfaces or the entire vehicle depending on your needs and driving habits. Protect your Ferrari against road hazards and the harsh elements before it's too late. The Mattioli Automotive Group contracts several of the top protective film installers to perform the service in our facility and can guarantee timely turnaround and flawless results. To learn more about protective film options for your Ferrari, or to schedule an appointment please contact one of the MAG’s four service centers. CERAMIC COATING Ceramic Coating is another popular option for protecting paint and other vehicle finishes. When compared to protective film, it can be a more comprehensive and economical alternative. Ceramic coating is a special chemical compound that is applied to various vehicle finishes to form a permanent bond with the surface. The result is a 9H+ hard coating that repels water and offers protection from UV rays, chemicals, oxidation, and corrosion. It can be applied to paint for protection against light scratches, wheels to prevent the build-up of brake dust, and glass for increased visibility in wet weather. The MAG contracts several of the top ceramic coating specialists to perform the service in our facility and we can guarantee timely turnaround and flawless results. To learn more about ceramic coating, or to schedule an appointment please contact one of the MAG’s four service centers.

Keep your Ferrari ready for your next drive. SKID PLATES The most common dangers for Ferrari owners are steep driveways and parking curbs. Even with the optional lifter, which is available on newer models, there are still some obstacles that are too big to maneuver over unscathed. To add protection against marring the underside of the front bumper, many owners elect to install a skid plate. This sacrificial piece of durable plastic polymer is precision cut to fit precisely on to the underside of the front bumper. The result is a nearly invisible layer of protection against costly paint and autobody repairs. To learn more about skid plates for your Ferrari, or to schedule an appointment please contact one of the MAG’s four service centers. Each MAG location stocks an extensive inventory of skid plates for various models and can complete the installation in a matter of hours. BATTERY MAINTINENCE The phrase “if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it” has never been more accurate than with regards to automotive batteries. When a battery is in a discharged state for an extended period of time the lead sulfate crystals inside the battery begin to increase in size. The bigger the crystals get, the harder they are to dissolve which ultimately blocks the chemical reaction that allows the battery to charge, and eventually leads to battery failure. For this reason, Genuine Ferrari offers Battery Re-conditioners which are designed to maintain a battery’s charge and combat the growth of sulfate crystals. A Battery Re-conditioner should be utilized any time a vehicle is parked for long periods of time. This is especially vital for new vehicles which contain more electrical components that put a drain the battery. For specific questions regarding the use of the Ferrari Battery Re-conditioners or to order one for your vehicle, feel free to reach out to one of Mattioli Automotive Group’s four service centers. "STICKY INTERIOR TRIM" Over time, environmental factors and harsh chemicals can take a toll on the interior components of a mature Ferrari resulting in sticky buttons, controls, and trim pieces. The only remedies to this condition are to replace the deteriorated components or have them re-finished. Either way, the process is very involved. Thankfully, the Mattioli Automotive Group’s service centers are very experienced with this issue and can help advise owners of their options when restoring their interior to like-new condition. If your Ferrari is in need of interior trim restoration, we invite you to reach out to one of MAG’s four service centers to learn more or schedule a service appointment.

Mattioli Automotive Group’s service centers are happy to help with any inquiries about these and other services offered to help protect and maintain your Ferrari. “Everybody Has a Story”

Featuring Hernan Antonio Rodriguez Article and photos by Hot Rod Jay Santos Instagram: 30_Rat Additional photos by Hernan Rodriguez Instagram: la.cv1.sport

“SuperCar Sunday is a weekly event whereby auto enthusiasts gather to share their amazing vehicles and camaraderie”. I love the quote above which was taken directly from the official Supercar Sunday website. It’s 100% accurate and a true reflection of the infamous car show. I’ve been attending Supercar Sunday since it first moved to the Woodland Hills mall parking lot located at the corner of Erwin St. and Topanga Canyon Blvd. for roughly 10 years. Since then, it’s found a new home at Pierce College and has been accepted with open arms. Although the location for the show has changed multiple times, there’s still one thing that remains the same. The people that gather every Sunday morning are really “The Stars” of the car show. As I’ve written and stated before in my past articles, “Everybody has a story”, this is Hernan’s... Hernan Antonio Rodriguez was born in El Salvador but grew up in the San Fernando Valley in

the Woodland Hills/Winnetka area. His first memory of driving a car was when he was around 8 years old. He was with his Dad and they were leaving the old Go-Kart track that was located next to the Van Nuys Airport on Hayvenhurst Avenue. His Dad asked him if he wanted to drive his Toyota Cressida around the back streets of the track. He explained to him “It’s no different from driving the Go-Karts, just bigger!” Without hesitation and sheer excitement, Hernan shouted “Yes!” From then on, his passion for cars was set in stone. Ironically, his first vehicle was another Toyota. A 1998 Toyota Celica GT that he now admits he should have kept. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve talked to that have said the exact same thing. Some of which that are still searching for their first long lost love. Let’s all agree we should of all “KEPT” our first car. Now back to our story… As fate would have it, Hernan ended up working with cars at a museum that specialized in 1954-1962 Nash Metropolitans. He learned how to test and rebuild carburetors, windshield wiper assemblies, fuel pumps as well as how to fabricate and install fuel and brake lines. Another important skill that he learned was how to repurpose parts that could be used on the Metropolitans. This one particular skill would help him in the

future with one of his new hobbies, customizing and creating one off Hot Wheels 1:64 scale cars. Fast forward to November 2013 and Hernan discovers Supercar Sunday. Supercar Sunday Car Show can be describes as “The anything and everything car show, a giant cauldron of automobile mayhem”. (Hey that’s pretty good, I just made it up!) This will prove to be extremely helpful with his imagination and creativity as you read on. Sadly in August 2018, Hernan's father passed away. To help with grieving and to keep himself busy, Hernan decided to start customizing diecast trucks. He started out with simple changes such as lifting the suspension and creating them in ways he thought they should have been originally made. As time went on, he mastered his skills and also acquired the correct tools to help him fabricate the thoughts in his head to reality. Target, Wal-Mart, Ross, Michaels and T.J. Maxx are some of the places he would go to find the cars. He doesn’t consider himself a collector of Hot Wheels or other scale cars in any sense. As a matter of fact, he’ll be the first to tell you even if he had a rare Hot Wheels in an unopened package, he would probably open it up to check it out!

His process for customizing is no different from someone who is working on a full size car. He sits down and stares at the miniature car thinking about if he owned the full size car, what would he change or fabricate on it. Inspiration comes from seeing cars at the car show, driving around or from his head. The whole process can take 10 to 20 minutes for a simple wheel swap or lowering job. But, it can take a few weeks for a full custom. Since there’s down time on some of them for drying, he’ll work on multiple cars at once. Also, he’s become a new father so he tries to sneak in an hour here and there while his baby sleeps. As Hernan points out, “There’s a lot of cutting, grinding, trimming, painting and fabrication that goes into my little cars”. One of his true talents is recreating a car that he’s seen in person. I’ve been very fortunate that he’s recreated “The 30 Rat”, which I’m proud to say is his favorite to date. I asked him what made him interested in recreating it. “I didn’t think I could make it look so similar, so I am proud of that. The car has always stood out to me since I started going to Supercar Sunday. It looks gnarly and it just oozes and radiates certain

vibes: COOL, MEAN, FAST and LOUD. YOU BETTER HOLD ON! You can’t even imagine how excited I was to see pictures of the whole process. He went through a couple of cars because he kept breaking things. To my surprise, he ended up giving me the finished car at Supercar Sunday. He normally keeps all the cars he customizes to help him remember what not to do etc., so I feel honored by his kind gesture and hard work. Great job Hernan, thank you! I hope everyone has enjoyed his story. Don’t be surprised if you see him walking around Supercar Sunday looking at your car, because yours might be next!

The Ferrari SF90 The First Electric Hybrid From The Italian Powerhouse Article byby Steve Steve Ellis Ellis 7KH ÀUVW HOHFWULF K\EULG IURP WKH ,WDOLDQ SRZHUKRXVH Article Photos Photos byby Ferrari Ferrari

And Kim Kardashian thought she broke the Internet, well let me tell you, that award has been handed to Ferrari on painting the internet Rosso Corsa red with their latest creation from Maranello, the Ferrari SF90! It’s been a long time since I’ve been excited about a Ferrari, and the SF90 is just titillating. You are looking at the FIRST EVER mid-engine, all-wheel drive, and plug-in Ferrari…*in Jeremy Clarkson voice*…ever made. The 3.9L V8 from the F8 Tributo has been bored and stoked out to 4.0L with twin-turbochargers and provides a celestial 769hp and 590 lb-ft of tq. Now wait…hold on…

Ferrari wasn’t done there, because along with that infinity gauntlet of power they’ve accompanied it with three electric motors, two in the front and the third one between the engine, and the eight- speed dualclutch transaxle, coming to a pavement melting 986 horsepower. On its own and fully charged, the electric motors provide 16 miles of range. Granted this isn’t anything near the electric range of say a Tesla, but this is impressive over the Porsche 918’s 12 miles, or the McLaren P1’s 6 miles. The LaFerrari supposedly couldn’t run on electric power, however there are a handful of videos showing that it can do so, yet there

wasn’t a reported range. So where does this put Ferrari for the future? Right up there with everyone else. To offset the weight added from the hybrid drivetrain, Ferrari has gone to Jenny Craig like levels, of shaving every bit of weight that they could, which brings a final weight of 3,461. Throughout the body work, there are active and aero styling to make sure the SF90 is as much as ninja like blade of aerodynamics, and as drag efficient as possible. One of the most impressive notes is the “shut-off Gurney”, which is a vertical lip on the edge of the spoiler designed to increase the downforce. This generates a titan like 860 lbs of

downforce at 155 miles per hour. I’m sure there are more hidden surprises with this car, and also for the future of coming Ferrari’s as the technology will surely trickle down throughout the brand over the years, and models to come.

The Toyota Hypercar...What?! When you think of supercars, or hypercars, brands like Bugatti, Ferrari, McLaren, and Koe-

nigsegg come to mind. The ability to reach speeds of 200 miles per hour with ease, rare materials such as car-

Article by Steve Ellis Article by Steve Ellis Photos by Toyota Photos by Toyota Mans this year, the excitement to see the results of their racing endeavors have the world talking. The GR Super Sport will share the 2.4l V6 turbo-charged powertrain from the TS050 LMP1 prototype, making 986hp, and put to the ground via a 6 or 7 speed sequential transmission. Currently at this time these are the only details that Toyota has released on the GR Super Sport, and as for the price, well we know it will cost a lot more than a Prius.

bon fiber, magnesium, and outfitted with the best of the best leathers, and boutique fabrication. These are commonly associated with cars at this level of echelon. A brand that doesn't come to mind is Toyota, and for the simple reason that the automotive manufacture has never dabbled in the world of high-end performance‌ until now. Roughly a year ago, Toyota announced that it would create a road car, based on a highperformance race car, and the car presented at the 2018 Tokyo Auto For more Behind the Wheel Salon, was the Gazoo Racing Super Instagram @GetBTW Sport. The GR Super Sport is based on Toyota’s TS050 LMP1 prototype race car, will enter the WEC 20202021 season, and has been seen testing at Fuji Speedway at this time. Given that Toyota just recently finished 1st and 2nd at Le

ence and was also a turning point in my photography career. Where do you see yourself in ten years? I am currently a psychology major. So, hopefully in 10 years I would be looking out of my high rise office, waiting for my next client’s therapy session. Taking early appointments starting now! Tell us about your car(s), what do you drive? Currently, I have a Jaguar XE and 1984 BMW E30. I’ve completely blacked out my Jaguar, so it looks a little bit more brute. As for the E30, let’s just say you’ll see me in willow springs burning rubber... If you could have one car, any car...what would it be? In 8th grade, I found out about the BMW E30. A basic, economic, sedan/coupe that made transportation both luxurious, sporty,

and comfortable in the 80’s. Ever since then, I’ve promised myself I will own an E30. Currently, I’ve owned 2 of them. I know for a fact I’m going to own many more in the future. Nothing beats 80’s German made cars. In your automotive life, what is the best moment that you have had....One morning upon waking up, I checked my phone and the first notification was that the official page of Jaguar had posted my photo. I had literally gone viral overnight. As a matter of fact, my picture had held the record for the highest number of likes at the time it was posted. With over 150,000+ likes, my picture still stands strong as one of Jaguars most popular images. What is a personal goal that you wish to achieve? Honestly, some goals become achieved when they aren’t even set. I was never expecting to become published worldwide by so many multimillion dollar companies.

Hagop Balekyan

However, with that being said, I always keep myself humble. Everyday I find something in my work that I can improve upon. There really is no boundary for successful visionary commodities. I’m always improving and open to suggestions. My goal would be to remain this passionate.

What is it about the car world that you love the most? The car community has gone through many phases in California. Right now, it’s very tough being a car guy because of all the state regulations. Nonetheless, the car community has remained intact. The thing that I love so much about the car community is that people have become open to all cars. Civic owners get along with Lambo owners; and visa versa. Where do you see automotive photography going in the future... Automotive photography is fairly recent, I don’t see many things being different in the future.

Capturing a beautiful machine is an art form that doesn’t expire. If you could be known for one thing, what would it be? At this point, I’m basically known as the family photographer. Everyone in the family calls me when they’re having an event and need it captured. Sometimes it can be strenuous, but a passion is a passion no matter the event.

Parting thought....what would you tell someone getting into cars, photography? One thing I wish I could have told myself when I started taking pictures of cars, is to look at what the professionals are doing. What angles they’re using, how they’re editing, etc. Mimic what you see is trending as photography. Throughout the many years I’ve been shooting and editing, I’ve come up with my own unique style. “Slick Stuff”

Once upon a time you could drive into a “Service Station” and a clean attendant would quickly come to your window and ask, “Fill ‘er up?” Not only would this attendant fill your desired amount of fuel in your vehicle, he would wash your front windshield and lift the hood to check the oil. Carefully positioned on the gas pump isle would be a display rack of 1 quart oil cans. These oil cans could be made out of metal, or some cardboard. They had bright colors, catchy slogans, and creative artwork. The attendant would poke a hole in the top of the can with a special spout, and top off your motor oil, eventually discarding the can when finished. This type of service is a thing of the past! And sadly most of the cans also.

An unopened, or carefully preserved oil can, has today become a highly desired piece of “Petroliana”. Most of these cans came in one quart sizes. Occasionally one can find a can as large as 5 or 10 gallons. Some cans are all metal; eventually they changed to cardboard sides with a metal top and bottom to save metal during World War II. And from the 80’s on, you will find motor oil contained in non-aesthetic plastic bottles. The value of these vintage relics today is determined by condition, logos, uniqueness and overall aesthetic appeal. Many a “Man Cave” or garage is adorned with these works of art. These cans can be found at vintage auctions, swap meets, and on-line sales such as EBAY. Does your “Man Cave” need one of these?

Los Angeles based Bliss Car Wash today announced the Orange County launch of its Bliss car wash brand, an eco-friendly chain of car washes sensitive to water usage and environmental factors. In a ribboncutting ceremony yesterday with local Placentia officials, CEO and Founder David Delrahim pledged to donate a new fresh-water well to the nonprofit, Wells Bring Hope, each time he opens a new car wash. The Placentia car wash, at 600 N. Rose Drive, is the first in a line of many

car washes expected to open under the Bliss brand name in California. The brand is founded by Delrahim, a California businessman and philanthropist. Delrahim and the Bliss company chose to work with the nonprofit, Wells Bring Hope because of its mission of drilling wells to bring safe water to rural villages in Niger, West Africa. “Fresh water is a precious resource, especially here in Southern California. While our business

practices at Bliss are set with water conservation in mind, our giving practices are geared toward helping people who badly need fresh water just to live,” said Delrahim. “We are grateful to David Delrahim, who is helping us with our critical mission to save lives and empower people by bridging the gap between clean water and healthy living in Niger, West Africa,” said Barbara Goldberg, Founder and President of Wells Bring Hope. The Bliss car wash model was

conceived by David Delrahim, who is passionate about the environment and water conservation. The new Bliss car washes use technology that constantly monitors fresh water usage, using 68 percent reclaimed water. The company also only uses cleaning products that are biodegradable and utilizes low-energy consuming machinery. David Delrahim is a Los Angeles based businessman and philanthropist and has nearly three decades of experience in the car wash indus-

try. Water's crucial role in accomplishing the world’s development goals is widely recognized. Africa faces endemic poverty, food insecurity and pervasive underdevelopment, with almost all countries lacking the human, economic and institutional capacities to effectively develop and manage their water resources sustainably. David is passionate about changing communities for the better and creating economic opportunities for the people of Niger by connecting them to clean potable water. About Bliss Car Wash Bliss Car Wash offers premium unlimited wash memberships at a great value. We are a refreshing car wash experience because we ensure that your car is cleaned responsibly, using cleaning products that are biodegradable and safe for the environ-

ment. We are water warriors, so we fight to protect it at every turn and closely monitor our usage. About Wells Bring Hope Wells Bring Hope is a 501(c)3 that was founded in March 2008 by Barbara Goldberg. To date, it has funded 568 wells and transformed the lives of over ½ million people with safe water in Niger, West Africa, the poorest country in the world. Wells Bring Hope partners with World Vision (WV), one of the largest humanitarian organizations in the world for its well drilling and maintenance.

Father and Son... A Submission

“This looks like fun,” thought 3-year-old Bobby Solloway as he eyed the bucket overflowing with suds. “I can help!” he exclaimed. His teenaged neighbor smiled as he handed Bobby a sponge, directing him to the bumper of his dad’s Lincoln. For young Bobby, this was the beginning of a love affair with beautiful cars. At an age when most teens pick up fast food jobs, Solloway turned his passion into a car de-

tailing business, which he continued through college. “I got to polish and pamper exotic and classic cars,” says Bob, “when I was barely old enough to drive.” At 20, he bought his first classic car, a 1981 Corvette. It turns out, the love of cars runs in the family. Twentyone-month-old Ryan, a later-in-life surprise, also surprised his parents when they discovered him perusing a Drivenworld Magazine he found on the coffee table. Like his dad,

Ryan has always been drawn to cars. It began with an obsession with wheels. On neighborhood walks, he waves at cars and stops to inspect parked cars. “He has a fit if cars are covered,” says Bob, “and insists we take the covers off. He calls all cars ‘Daddy,’” laughs Bob. “I have been a car enthusiast all my life. Today I own all the original models of the cars my son plays with. I never imagined I’d be a dad, but here I am with my toddler

helping me polish cars.” Today, Bob Solloway lives in Woodland Hills with his wife, son and rescue dog. He is the owner of United Financial Services, but still finds time to pamper and polish classic cars, including his 1981 Corvette, 1978 Camaro z28, 1979 Pontiac TransAm and 1979 Pontiac Firebird Formula, the cars he dreamed of through childhood. Spring Projects To Enhance Your Home With interest rates remaining historically low, homeowners have been encouraged to refinance their homes, often sparking a renewed commitment to one's current property. Tackling improvement projects that will add sizzle to a property can be done quickly, easily and inexpensively. Top on the list for many home owners is adding a fire pit as a highlight to the yard. Fire pits not only create warm light and ambience, but they are a wonderful gathering spot for family and friends. Building a fire pit can be a great DIY project, but be

sure to consult a professional when installing the gas line. And you might want to avoid any low hanging branches! Speaking of entertaining‌why not refresh that deck? Staining and sealing the deck can make it look new, thereby giving the entire house a face lift. Use a sealant that accentuates the wood grain, or even try a change of color. If you don't have a deck, consider adding one. Although decks do require some investment, Remodeling Magazine reports that a new wooden deck will net a 69% return on investment when you do

decide to sell. Make your home cheerful by adding a new mailbox or painting your existing one. Don't be afraid to greet Spring with bright colors. New house numbers are also an inexpensive way to update the front of your home. Plant bright flowers in your garden and add some charming furniture to your front porch. Little things mean a lot, so welcome Spring by putting your home's best foot forward.
