From the Editor The new year is here. It is amazing how fast it comes. There are certain milestones...And a year is one of them. When you publish a monthly magazine and the calendar comes back around to the January issue it is a like a slap in the face. Bam, a new year. The January issue. It seems like just yesterday I was doing the previous January issue for 2014. My old man told me when I was a kid, time goes by so fast...Like most things, he was right. One year. I swore I was going to get fit again, no excuses. I had a whole bunch of things that I wanted to get done. And as I sit here at 8:00pm on a Thursday night eating my salad while I type and think...And type. Did I get them done in 2014? I don’t know that I did. I mean I had a great year, so much to be thankful for, so much. Most of you know that my wife and I had our first daughter just over a year ago. The greatest thing that has ever happened to us for sure. Scarlett is... There are no words, she is just pure emotion, love. So, back to 2014...What did I get done? Did I do enough? Could I have done more? I am compelled to think that I didn’t do enough, didn’t get enough done, didn’t grow enough. In so many ways. I didn’t make enough of a difference. What happened? I don’t think I have some psychological condition whereby I am hard on myself, I don’t think that I am self-abasing, I just think that I could get so much more done. So many things I want to do. So many. So many things I need to do. I cannot help it, I have this voice inside of me, I don’t know where exactly it comes from but it tells me to do more, do more, you have to do more. More, More, More. It is almost a game. An addiction. More. I know a lot of people who suffer from the same affliction, I think the best name for it is reality. Now, I am not whining, I am not complaining, I am just saying that I need to do more. Around the corner I will be forty years old and I am now feeling a clock ticking, realizing that I gotta push even harder now, more than ever. This next decade, I need to really make it count. Now look at me I am thinking in ten year intervals. I was watching 60 Minutes this past Sunday and some guy was talking about a program he started to get people to slow down and enjoy the “now.” He spoke of simple things like stopping to eat your food and chew slowly. As I chew and type, kind of funny. The guy is probably right, ok, I know he is right but that 24 hour period, it seems to be not enough these days. Earlier today I was in a friends office. I am a pretty busy guy and this guy makes me look like I am standing still, this guy has a lot on his plate. So there we were and we both thought it was Wednesday when in fact it was Thursday. We couldn’t remember what day it was...We both swore it was Wednesday. I pulled out my phone and checked and it was Thursday. But, I know why we both thought it was one day earlier in the

week. Because if it was Wednesday, we still would have another day to get stuff done. I think he is afflicted with that same problem I am. Time. Now some say that if you are out of time, you are not managing your time well. Well, most of us must not be managing our time well. I can remember back to the rare Sunday when my father would not have to do something around the house, he would sit there and read the paper in his chair and watch sports. I never really understood it as he was such an active man, now I do. I am thinking back to my goals of 2014. I really wanted to grow my business which most of you have no idea what I do. Pretty funny actually, most of you don’t and I have you seen you every Sunday for how many years. Don’t get me wrong, I have some great clients, but that little voice in my head tells me I have to do more, more, more, more. It is not a greed thing, but it is a need thing. I need to do more for me. For who I want to become, for goals that I want, no... That is not right, for things that I need to get done before I die. Now, I am not dying that I know of, but there are those that say every second that goes by we get closer to our death...Which in theory is correct, but I think the point is that we only have one life and damn it if you are not doing something you love or something that makes you happy or gets you on your road to happiness, well life is too short not to. So as I type this with bloodshot eyes, I can tell you that I am traveling down my road, my way. That makes me happy. So here is what I am going to tell you, for 2015 I am going to have a stellar year. I am going to push harder then ever. I feel as if I am going to explode inside...That there is something that needs to come out of me and I am going to make it happen. For me. I am going to make such a damn loud noise that whomever needs to hear it or see it or experience it, will. I am going do all the damn things that I have been putting off. I will have my wife beside me, my kid in my arms and my friends around me. I have to, I have no choice in the matter. It shall be done or I’ll be damned. You know some people go to therapy...I write a letter to the editor every month. Hey, maybe I made you laugh, good! But really, you want insight into someone’s soul, I am baring it wide open for you. I must do more. You know I can’t remember the last time I sat down and read a book. I was thinking about that as my daughter flips through her books. I sat there reflecting about how my imagination developed as a kid. How at first I could not understand why my mom and brother loved to read so much and then I caught the reading bug. It was the Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas. Now there is a story. There was a fellow driven, the Count of Monte Cristo. That book pulled me in and I couldn’t put it down. I think the last book I read was actually a reread of Atlas Shrugged or Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. Those two can pull you in pretty good too. And the main characters

in those books...Pretty damn driven. People say that when you love doing what you do it is not work. Well, I love life, I mean I really love life. I always have. I have always tried to appreciate it and not take it for granted. And ever since my daughter was born, I am just so damn appreciative and thankful for this life of mine. So to honor it, I must do more. My work is my life and if I love life, then I must love work. I think that makes sense... I suppose it is about human ability as well. I have always figured that if that guy over there can do it so can I. Why not? So when I see someone do something awesome, naturally I want to emulate that person. I do believe I can do anything, but I also believe that we all can do anything we want to and put our minds to. Listen, there is somebody out there that always gets the job done, the question is, is that going to be you or me? Sometimes when you have no choice in the matter it is actually easier to get the job done. Survival is a great motivator. But most of us live pretty good, don’t we. So where does this damn voice come from screaming at me to do more? I wonder if you have a similar voice. I bet you do. I see a lot of bloodshot eyes out there and a lot of calloused hands. You must have that same voice. How loud is it for you? Is it a soft voice, perhaps something you can barely hear at all or a voice that you learned to ignore or drown out? Have you forgotten about the voice altogether? My dad used to say that there is nothing worse than wasted talent. I believe I have mentioned that here before. And I agree with him. And I think that the biggest secret is that talent could be inherent to a person but, and a big but, I also believe that talent can be equated in effort and consistency. Drive and motivation. Perhaps even some faith in oneself. I think most “talented” people tried harder, practiced more, studied more, sacrificed more and never gave up. Never quitted. Never. I think the biggest secret and I believe this with all my heart is that we all have the talent to get it done, whatever it is. But, do we have the faith and the drive to get it done. Do we allow things like fear to stop us from doing what we should be doing in our lives versus simply dreaming about it or ignoring that little voice in our heads. Now I cannot tell you a year from now if I will be writing the next January Editor’s letter and I will be saying that I got so much done, my guess is that I won’t be. I do not think I will ever be satisfied with how much I got done simply because there is so much that I want to do and learn and try and experience. There are so many places I want to go that I need to go to. There are so many things that I want to share with so many people, people I have not even yet met. So...In 2015, have one hell of a year will ya! -Dustin

The Supercars of Motor4Toys

The first Sunday of December every year is always reserved on my calendar to be at Motor4Toys. For those of you unaware, Motor4Toys is one of the biggest charitable car shows in the world. A few thousand cars show up each year to support Motor4Toys. I have had the privilege of attending the last nine Motor4Toys events! Each year I notice one thing, the event always increases in size and the stack of toys seems to get bigger and bigger. I got there just before 6am this year as I like watching the sunrise and getting the clean photos without all of the crowds. This year the display of super cars did not disappoint. There are not many events you can attend in the world where three Bugatti Veyrons (all privately owned) are on display for viewing (especially in the winter time). On

display was a standard Bugatti Veyron 16.4 in a matte gray finish with aftermarket wheels. A white Bugatti Veyron Vitesse known as “Whitesse” along with a very unusual red with black swirl Bugatti Veyron Vitesse known as the “Hell Bug” were also present. The “Hell Bug” was delivered to Motor4Toys on JP Logistics’ brand new Buggie Truck 2.0. If you own a Bugatti you might as well deliver it in style right? A very rare Koenigsegg CCX also made an appearance. Many people were looking at the rare car and wondering what they were looking at. Most people had never seen or heard of a one before. I am not sure exactly how many Koenigsegg’s are in the United States at this moment, but if I had to guess, I would say less than twelve. The Ferrari and Lamborghini Owners did not let us down either. There were three Ferrari 458 Speciales (all white). The 458 Speciale

is the latest and greatest limited production Ferrari and they are starting to pop up all around Southern California. There were a couple of the new Lamborghini Huracan’s on display at Motor4Toys this year as well. There was a yellow one that had Saudi Arabia license plates. That owner definitely should have won the award for traveling the furthest to Motor4Toys. The guys at Century Towing brought out a stunning Ferrari F12 Berlinetta on their trailer which sure attracted many car enthusiasts. There was definitely no shortage of McLaren’s at Motor4Toys this year. There were plenty of 12c’s and 650S’ in just about every color. There were so many other amazing cars that have not been mentioned at Motor4Toys. Just about make and model car you would ever want to see was there that day. Overall, Motor4Toys 2014 was a huge success! Special thanks to Dustin Troyan for putting this event together each year. Thanks to all of those who contributed to this event by either making a donation or by simply bring a toy to the event. The Louisville High School Motor4Toys Run

Story by Dustin Troyan Photos by Christan Welch Motor4Toys is much more than just an event, it is a family. It is effort, it is friendship, it is purpose, it is fun. Every year Motor4Toys reaches out to local schools with the hope that they might participate in the annual toy drive. The concept is fairly simple, the school asks the students to bring a toy for needy children and we all cross our fingers that the children respond. It has been a very successful way of collecting toys in the past and we are always excited to get new schools involved. This year one of the schools we reached out to was Louisville High School in Woodland Hills. We explained that we could do a small car show at the school to share with the students and ...it was a go! We were hugely excited. The Auto Gallery who continues to support Motor4Toys in a noble fashion championed the day by not only allowing the Classic Chevy Club, and friends to meet at Lamborhgini North Los Angeles in Woodland Hills, but they also came along with over $4,000.000 in exotic cars and many of their passionate team members. As we left Lamborghini North Los Angeles on a Thursday morning, it was truly a sight to see, the exotics partnered with the classics Chevys rolling down the street, it was truly an incredible reflection of our car community. As we entered Louisville, the students went crazy. They had no idea what was in-store and to see the Lamborhgni Aventadors, Lamborghini Huracans, Audi R8s, McLarens, Porsche Turbos and on and on. On the Classics side, there were ‘55, ‘56, ‘57 Chevys, hot rods and a some Nomads...So awesome. When Louisville called Motor4Toys to come and pick up the toys two weeks later, it was an incredible donation. Over two hundred toys were given from the students! Outstanding! Absolutely incredible. A very special thank you to Lousiville High School, The Auto Gallery, The Classic Chevys of Socal and the Hot Rodders, you all are AWESOME!

Motor4Toys with Tommy Mansuwan As I am laying there counting sheep in dreamland, I hear that beeping. It’s the alarm. I look at my phone and yup, it is 3:30am. That time of year has arrived, the annual Motor4Toys Charity toy drive. Every year my wife and I, along with countless others, come out in the pitch dark to help out with this amazing event and this year is no different. In a way, it serves as a yearly reunion among the volunteers who give their time to this cause. We arrive shortly before 5 and promptly see signs for volunteers to park across the street in the mall parking. Once we arrive to center stage, tasks are immediately handed out and work begins. Mind you, most volunteers are here by 3:30am-4am so we are handed the left over assignments. This translates into being a rover, someone who does a little bit everywhere. It starts with the boxes…dozens of additional boxes being put together. With most of the work done the day before, it was determined much more were needed with the amount of toys anticipated. Some will be used for trash

receptacles but most will be temporary homes for all the donated toys. At this point, another crew begins to place the boxes throughout the parking lot for trash while I and a few others start to fill boxes with toys that have already been delivered. While I couldn’t exactly see what toys were going in the boxes in the darkness, I will say many kids this year will be enjoying beanie babies. And by many, I mean hundreds. This is exactly why I love this event so much. To see the power and generosity of the community for such a cause is something truly special. It is now just before 6am and the food trucks start rolling in. As they head to their assigned spots for setup, we prep for the bagels, donut, and soda stand. By this time, the final touches are being put together as the early birds begin to roll in. The front of the parking lot is ready for visitors as it is roped off with cars from various sponsors perfectly staggered throughout the area. On the sidewalk, the items are displayed

for the silent auction throughout the day. Over in “Toyland”, the name given to the toy drop-off area by one of Motor4Toys’ leaders, the action begins as the first donations of the day arrive. It’s show time! While this is a quick glimpse of the morning of the event, the real work and preparation starts months in advance. As with any major annual event, the planning begins for next year once the current one ends. And although we helped out just a bit, there are plenty others who worked tirelessly the day before along with the week leading up to Motor4Toys. Without them and the car community, the show you see would be slightly different. Well done!

No, I’m not talking about fitness machines. When muscle cars and hot rods gained in popularity in the mid sixties, us kids that could not drive were stuck watching these cool rides cruise down the streets, filled with envy. Well, it didn’t take long for the Schwinn bicycle company to cash in on our craving! Schwinn designers had always been hip with their brand.

In the early sixties they had produced bicycles with the names ‘Corvette’, ‘Jaguar’, and ‘Racer’. In 1968, the innovation of Schwinn designer Al Fritz’s ‘Stingray’ was taken to a new level with the ‘Krate’ series: Apple Krate, Orange Krate, Pea Picker, Cotton Picker, Lemon Peeler, and Grey Ghost. Their design came right from the drag strip. The bikes featured a fat rear slick tire with raised white letters. They had a smaller rim and front tire, copying the dragster look. They featured high-rise handlebars and a stick shift, just like what was in our big brother’s car. Add a Schwinn-approved rear view mirror and speedometer, and we were ready to cruise with the best of them!

It didn’t take long before other manufacturers copied Schwinn’s success. The Raleigh Bicycle Company of England did it best with their ‘chopper’. The Iverson Company produced a muscle bike designed by customizer George Barris - yes, the same guy who designed and built the ‘Batmobile’. The Huffy Company produced a bicycle with a high sissy bar like Peter Fonda in ‘Easy Rider’. They also got rid of the handlebars and actually replaced them with a steering wheel. Sears produced many muscle bikes that had a very cool appeal, including bikes inspired by the motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel. The popularity of muscle bikes declined after 1973, when Ralph Nader banned the ‘stick shift’ because many young men were singing soprano after crashes involving the shifter. Once the cool was gone, so was the popularity!

Bicycle Motocross arrived in the late 1970’s. Many of these cool bikes were stripped of their nonessential parts and converted into bicycles that could be ridden off road. Few of these cool, vintage bikes remain today. A resurgence of the muscle bike has occurred in the last few years. Companies like Nirve and GT Dyno have produced cool, full-size bikes with automotive themes.

How it all begins... A photo submission from Gus Corona of his son Matteo Corona who turned two a few months ago. Matteo was celebrating his two year birthday with his tifosi birthday party and his first pi単ata ...a custom made Ferrari F1. It has become so apparent that the passion for motorsports is passed on through the passions of neighbors, friends and of course family. If you have read the articles about the Motor4Toys school toy drives you have to understand something...The kids know what all the cars are! Most of them are more familiar with the newer exotic cars, but many of them know are familiar with the makes and models of the classics. The first time we pulled into Chaparral Elementary with the cars, the kids went crazy. For that matter, every year they have. But, when they all pull out their phones and start taking pictures of the cars...And they start discussing the difference between a Ferrari and a Lamborghini. The history of McLaren and the horsepower ratings... And naturally the price tag. We were all blown away. So there is Gus and his kid at Supercar Sunday and Motor4Toys. A tradition that they have been doing for a couple of years now, a tradition that undoubtedly will go on for quite a while. I wonder what memories the love of cars will bring

them. What tradition they will have each year... Will it be Ferrari Day at Supercar Sunday or perhaps Motor4Toys. I wonder what friends they will make and if they will attend races or track days. If Matteo will go to go-karting school many years before he can drive legally. I think back to my tradition with my father, it was more of working on his truck to keep it running than enjoying motorsports. But, I knew that he always wanted a sports car, but he never had the opportunity. I recall him telling me that I needed how to maintain a car...I think Matteo will need to know how to race a car. The backstory here is that his father Gus is quite the cyclist. A very fast man on two wheels and pedal power. If you can keep up with him up Stunt Road or Rockstore...Well, then you are an elite cyclist. I am guessing by default, Matteo will have to be fast both on two wheels and four. Matteo, Happy Birthday and Gus, thank you for sharing!

The 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show

On November 19, 2014 I attended the Motor Press Guild Invitational Breakfast at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The breakfast took place outside of the convention center and featured an incredible display of cars. Some of my favorites were a white Porsche 959, a red Ferrari Enzo, three 1:1 Scale Hot Wheels cars and an NHRA Top Fuel Funny Car that is driven by Matt Hagen. There were a few local gourmet food trucks that provided the breakfast for all of the attendees. At approx. 9am, the doors opened to the Convention Center and the new vehicle debuts began and lasted throughout the day. I ventured around the South and West Halls and snapped

photos for a few hours. Some of my favorites that were unveiled that day were the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, the Shelby GT350 and the new Maserati Alfieri. Porsche also unveiled some new models but my favorite in their booth was the beautiful white Porsche 918 Spyder that was on display. I also visited the Saleen booth and saw a stunning white Saleen S7 Twin Turbo, which is one of my all-time favorites. Kentia Hall, which is located underneath the South Hall, features the latest and greatest in aftermarket automotive accessories for your vehicles. I heard some people say that is like a mini SEMA show. From Ford GT’s to McLaren P1’s, there was really something for everyone in Kentia

Hall. Whether you like the H2 Hummer with 30” Forgiato rims or the Liberty Walk BMW M4 there was plenty to enjoy and photograph in Kentia Hall. I really enjoy going to the LA Auto Show each year. I do miss the days when Ferrari and Lamborghini displayed their newest models; maybe someday they will do that again. I guess they really don’t need to advertise, since Los Angeles is one of the biggest markets in North America for both brands. I sure got a lot of exercise this year, because according to my iPhone 6 I walked approx. 9 miles around the LA Convention Center. Looking forward to next year’s show!

Classic Chevys of Socal Car Show Do not miss!

The 33rd Annual Classic Chevy Show is an event not to miss! This show, which is open to all makes and models not only brings a variety classic and hot rods, but late model street cars as

well. If you are unfamiliar with the Classic Chevy Club of Socal, there might not be a more energetic and passionate group of car owners out there. The Club has chosen Rancho San Antonio Boys Town not only as their location, but the beneficiary of the show. Proceeds from the show will be donated to Rancho, which helps to provide underprivileged youth a safe home and learning environment to help secure their futures. Over the last dozen years,

the Club has donated over $110,000.00 to Rancho. The boys at Rancho will also be present to assist with the show and provide an amazing bar-b-que. This show is one of the largest car shows in the valley and also one of the longest running. According to Crazy Al aka Big Al, this is in fact the largest show around! What many people do know is that this show is open to all makes and models. Everyone is welcome to the show and the more the merrier. Beyond having a great show, it is a huge goal of the Chevy Club to generate as much revenue as possible for Rancho. The club has a strong connection with Ranch and Brother John who operates Rancho and they do their best to raise the bar each year and put on the best show possible. If you do not have a car to enter into the show that is also ok, the club welcomes you to come by and enjoy the show, bid on auction items and have a wonderful meal. by Brooks Smith Bear with me a moment, I’m about to get as far from Supercar Sunday as is possible in a midengined, Italian exotic. If you read this page regularly (hello and thank you), you’ve noticed that I’m fond of lightweight, small, racing-inspired cars. I’m also not shy about my love for things Italian, oldish, and powered from amidship. From Abarths and Gordinis, to De Tomaso Vallelungas, and Alfa Stradales, and on to the new 4C, and LaFerrari, there’s a pretty specific mix of attributes that focuses my interest on a car. So it seems a little odd to me that one of the few cars that ticks all the boxes might be the least expensive Italian sports car you can buy. And at the risk of writing myself right out of the market for one of the nicest driver’s cars I’ve found, I’m going to wonder aloud why you folks aren’t buying up every decent Fiat X1/9 out there. Don’t get me wrong, I know full well why you’re not; they rust, they’re unreliable, they’re slow. I just don’t understand why any of that matters. People (even Supercar Sunday people) spend all kinds of money on rusty, unreliable, cars (check the restoration cost on a Dino sometime). And yes, the Fiat is slow; with 75BHP (Almost certainly less in US spec) it could never be anything but. However, far from being a drawback, in this day and age the X1/9’s lower threshold is, I put it to you, an absolute boon. In a perfect world, the roads would be empty, speed limits would be mere suggestions,

Do you want it? and we would spend our weekends zipping up mountains and down canyons to our heart’s content; at least until we all crashed very badly. This world, on the other hand, contains police who are enthusiastic, gas that is expensive, and driving enjoyment that can be measured in the time it takes to catch up to the next idle road user. And here, the little Fiat X1/9 might be the ideal sports car. Simply put, you will never be stuck waiting to unleash an X1/9. In any newish Ferrari, the driver is constantly playing a waiting game. The performance envelope is so huge that there just isn’t space to explore it safely beyond a circuit. Three seconds of acceleration in a 458 or F12 puts the driver into deeply illegal territory, with the car’s limits still quite far off. The Fiat can be accelerated as hard as its 1300cc will carry it between most stop lights, right past a radar gun, without worry. On a twisty road, its tiny tires don’t encourage speeds that garner legal attention. Sure, if you really want to, you can speed in this car. But it’s not simply a function of pushing the loud pedal a quarter of the way to the bulkhead. The flip side is that the X1/9 rarely feels slow. It’s a more advanced, focused car than any of its in-period competitors. Properly maintained, it never feels sloppy like a Triumph Spitfire, or choppy like a BMC Spridget. It’s a car of balanced performance; the stiff (for the day) structure allows the tires and suspension to make the most of

what they and the engine have on hand, and the four-wheel disks can haul it all back down again; all the while, the very direct manual steering is chattering away at you. It’s all terribly involving, and it sounds great too. So there’s the bit I don’t understand. This car is basically a sharper Miata with all the charm of a 70s Ferrari, yet it will cost you basically nothing. Even the 1974 car, the only one in the US with small bumpers, will struggle to break ten grand. Perfectly drivable cars can be had at half that. Where can you buy anything remotely comparable for anything like that money? I honestly can’t think of more than a handful of cars that give so accessible, yet so focused a driving experience, at any price. And on top of all that, I happen to think its Gandini-penned (Yes, Mr. Miura/Countach/Diablo) lines look wonderful. It lacks the earlier Italan penchant for curves, but it’s a beautifully tailored little thing, from a famous pen. Alfa’s 4C hits the market next year. It’s the car we need right now; light, relatively affordable, and fun. But early reports say it’s in need of further development, especially the steering and the engine. The Fiat is nothing like as fast, but it steers better, sounds better, and costs about 1/5th as much, and you can buy one right now. It’s not that I think the Alfa should cost less, or that people shouldn’t buy them. I just don’t know why the Fiat is so cheap, and no one wants one. Why don’t any of you want this car?!
