FROM THE EDITOR A

L E T T E R

B Y D U S T I N T R OYA N

I know a man that says, “right where you are is where you are supposed to be.” That the “universe” has a purpose for you and you should embrace the what ,why and where of what you are doing. A bit metaphysical for some, but, it really makes you think. Am I doing what I am supposed to be doing, at this moment? If that is the case, it is a Saturday afternoon. I have “noise reduction” ear muffs on as the kids are making some noise and I am trying to concentrate. We just got back from a quick couple of nights camping in our trailer at Rincon Parkway and when we got home, the slide-out broke and would not go in. I was under the trailer for a few hours and mostly fixed it, but, I still had to unload the truck and trailer, put a coat of chalkboard paint on the “Chalkboard Chevelle,” and write this. Of course there is dinner and the family and all that stuff, so I guess I am right where I need to be, behind a computer with ear muffs on. I can hear myself breathing. It is really an interesting thought, “right where you are is where you are meant to be.” When I find myself in interesting situations or situations that are out of the ordinary, I now ask myself, “why am I here?” What is it that I am supposed to see, hear, learn; Who is it that I am supposed to meet? There is a reason I am here, what is it? Recently, Heather and I were invited to the seventieth birthday of a friend of ours. This friend is very successful. A very kind and generous man, I have known him for years now. I have met his family a few times, but I am closer with him than his family. When we were invited, I was touched, he is a very popular man. He was having the birthday party in Beverly Hills. Sure I am around exotic cars a bit, but I really don’t head into Beverly Hills much. For that matter, I rarely go over the hill. I try to spend as much time with the family and at the beach or hiking, with the grandparents, things like that. So for me to head to Beverly Hills on a Sunday evening, it was a bit out of the ordinary for me (us). The invite suggested that the dress code was “Urban Chic”, I had no idea what that meant, and I was certain that nothing I owned was “urban chic.” I have business suits, camouflaged shorts and Motor4Toys T-shirts, in black or blue. My range is limited, as aforementioned, I don’t go out to clubs or out for drinks, if at all. The reason I mention the dress, is that this “event” was really out of the norm for us. Not that we were celebrating a birthday of a dear friend, but we have never been to the Waldorf Astoria nor a residence in Beverly Hills, unless it was an event at a car dealership in Beverly Hills. My friend had a wonderful party. For such a popular man, the celebration was very intimate. I would say under a hundred people. I kept asking myself why am I here? Yes, I am a friend of his, but, there has to be some greater purpose. What am I supposed to hear? Learn? Who am I meant to meet? What is the “take-away”? We knew nobody there. Well, we know his wife but, that was about it. We were quick to make new friends as everyone was very nice. But if you knew my friend, you would understand why he was surrounded by nice people. A reflection of himself. But, I am getting ahead of myself. So as the evening went on, we were asked that if we had a fun story to share about him or, something to say it was welcomed. First the family spoke, it was just what you would expect to hear from a loving family. Then the friends started speak, I was learning a lot about my friend. Then, and this is when it hit me, then I knew what I was there to hear. One of the things.... A man got up and said some kind words. Very kind words. He actually appeared to hold back tears. Then he said, “no one here knows how many lives have been changed or saved by my friend.” You make think that you know, but, he has made such a difference in this world, he has saved so many people, none of you at this party will ever know or realize....” Something to that effect. THAT was why I was there. It was to hear that. How he has made such a difference in people’s lives and never asked for a thank you or an acknowledgment. Philanthropy from the heart. Then, something else hit me. My old partner at the coffee shop, when his father passed away we went to the “Rememberance” which was also in Beverly Hills. People were speaking very highly about his father. Then, my partner’s brother stands up and says, “nobody here knows how many lives were changed for the better by our father.” “nobody here really knows the scope of how many people my father helped through his philanthropy..how many people here went to college because of my father?” In a packed room, damn near every hand went up. Then he said, “my father has a scholarship fund in perpetuity to help children become educated and make the world a better place...” FOR PERPETUITY! I had never, ever even thought about something like that, “for perpetuity.” It ends up that people at our table also new my old partner’s family as they went to school together and were members at Hillcrest. It is a small world indeed. That is why I was there, at both events. To learn about two great men, one who passed on and one with a great many years left. I was there to learn about an illustration of who I wanted to be like. To change the world and those around me by action, kindness, generosity and achievement. And, to not look for recognition, something I truly admire about these two men. They did it, to just do it. They decided to change so many lives because they could, for the right reasons, from the heart, perhaps even further, from their soul. The other reason I was at the birthday party was to realize how special my friend is and indeed how important it is to have people like him in my life, our lives for so many years to come. It is people like Jim and Sam that have decided to shape the world, inspire others, give back, then give back some more and then keep giving. I was there to be inspired. A true gift indeed. Jim, thank you for that night and your friendship. Sam, I wish I got to know you better, but I know you through Louis and because of that, I know you deeply. Folks, be like Sam and Jim. Give, inspire, share, teach, not for credit or acknowledgment, but, because it gives us hope. Have a legacy. Dustin 5

CORVETTES Lavaggio and Supercar Sunday he Corvette Marque Day at Supercar Sunday was nothing short of incredible. Example of every generation were on hand as well as Corvettes that went from mild to wild. We even had a few race cars from Cris Gonzalez at JCG Restoration and

Customs. The Marque area was filled to the brim. Over 100 Corvettes came from all over California to participate in the annual marque. Representative of just about every Corvette club were present, clubs included; Redline, Simi

Valley, Vintage, Santa Clarita and Corvettes of Choice. What a wonderful group of enthusiasts. John Vega who is not only a wonderful man, but a member of every car club in California, organized a brunch at Lavaggio after Supercar Sunday. Corvettes of Choice lead a group of about sixty Corvettes on a leisurely drive ending up at Lavaggio. Cris Gonzalez from JCG Restoration and Customs sponsored the brunch for about 100 people at Lavaggio. His C5 race car was on display and he answered many questions about building, maintaining and racing Corvettes. The team at Lavaggio did an outstanding job at hosting the event and there was literally no room for all of the Corvettes as it was such an epic turnout. Bellini Bistro, who is part of Lavaggio did a wonderful job

providing with catering the event. The entire day, starting at Supercar Sunday to the drive to the brunch at Lavaggio, it was just magical. A more enthusiastic group of car owners may not exist. And, a very special thank you to the Corvette owners for helping me “set up” Supercar Sunday. Your help was greatly appreciated. Until next year when John Vega says...”Hey, can we do another Corvette deal in October...” For more info on Lavaggio and JCG Restoration and Custom please visit: www.lavaggio.net and www.jcgrestorationandcustoms.com 9

MAKE YOUR HOME A HOLIDAY HEAVEN

The holidays are around the corner, and hosts will want to make their guests feel welcome and pampered during their holiday soirées. This month we received tips from one of the leading events planners in the U.S., Kristin Banta of Kristin Banta Events Production and Design House. A guest designer for Z Gallerie, an LA based retail store that specializes in fabulous home décor, Kristin offers up ideas to make your home emanate bounty and luxury. When asked what her best advice for hosts would be, she immediately responded with three basic guidelines: “SET A STUNNING TABLE, STOCK THE BAR AND SERVE UP CHIC.” “It’s all in the presentation,” Kristin explains. “Think abundance and drama and always add touches to give your table a lux feel. She encourages experimentation with unusual table decorations that add an artistic touch to the tableau, such as beautiful unmatched glass pieces or crystal perfume bottles that create a holiday feel. “Experiment with heights, and try turning objects

on their sides to create a different perspective,” she suggests. “Stocking the bar requires more that a selection of alcoholic beverages. Use festive accessories and a variety of colorful garnishes to evoke a feeling of bounty.” Kristin urges hosts to set up beverage-and-bites areas where guests can create their own cocktails. “Let them sip in style by using elegant stemware.” When it comes to tabletops, think lush. “Select beautiful tableware. Everything should be a feast for the eyes. Remember, if your dinnerware is chic, your guests will feel pampered,” Kristin explains. “Make everything a celebration.” This season, be sure to incorporate these tips on entertainment from a leading design expert to ensure that your holiday gathering is festive, luxurious and most of all…memorable.

FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX or the past 6 years I have attended the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas with my family, and every year has been one for the books. I remember watching my first Formula 1 race with my step dad. I heard the loud high-pitched sound from my bedroom, and emerged curious as to what could possibly be making that sound. I remember my mother wasn’t home, and when she wasn’t, my stepdad would turn the volume up on the TV, he said, “It makes me feel like I’m there”. Little did I know what I had stumbled upon was Formula 1, and even lesser did I know was that the race I watched was the legendary Nigel Mansell chasing down Ayrton Senna on the streets on Monaco. Jump ahead to 2010 when it was announced that a race track was going to be built right outside of Austin, which is roughly an hour and thirty five minutes from my hometown of College Station, Formula 1 was coming to Texas. 12

For years I thought that I would have to travel across the globe to one of the many F1 circuits to witness a F1 race with my own eyes, and here it has set foot in my backyard. After the layout of the track was revealed, I sat down with my stepfather, and a handful of racing friends, and we studied the track, every corner, and every straight, to decide where we would see the most action. Corner fifteen provided the best vantage point to see any overtaking coming at the end of the long straight into turn twelve and from there we would be able to see the cars as they exited turn 15. After taking all of this into consideration, we bought our seats as a group. Every year we have gathered as a group of friends to watch the best drivers in the world, while we catch up on each other’s lives since our last meeting. The seats that we’ve sat in for the last few years now have a little wear from the harsh Texas weather, but they felt even more comfortable this year, (according to my buttocks anyway), as we prepared to kick off the race weekend. Here we are the sixth year of the Formula 1 USGP, and every time I walk through the gates of COTA, and hear the beeping sound from the little machine that scans my tickets, every memory of the experience is refreshed in my mind. I would be lying to you if I said I wasn’t grinning ear to ear as I wrote that last sentence, as this truly had me feeling like a little kid on Christmas.

Friday consist of practice sessions for the teams, they begin to set up their cars, develop their strategies, and refamiliarize themselves with the stunning track known as COTA. When the time allotted for practice starts, you hear some of the most advanced racing cars come to life, and for the first time since the previous F1 USGP, the cars take to the track. We start the day by stopping by one of the best breakfast joints in Texas, JP’s Taco Express to grab some morning grub. Understand that when I say I drive 30min away for these tacos, that I’m not talking about some taco bell. For nearly 20 years we’ve driven the curvy backroads to JPs as a weekend ritual. After picking up breakfast we continue to COTA. The schedule for Saturday continues with a final practice session and the follows with qualifying. Now it’s down to business, as the drivers fight to earn their spots on the grid for the race. As my alarm goes off at 6am on Sunday October 22nd, I am already showered, dressed and ready, for today is THE 2017 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix!! At this point in the season, my favorite driver, Lewis Hamilton leads in points for clutching the World Championship. If Sebastian Vettel comes in 6th or less, then Hamilton would be World Champion for the 2017 season. As much as I’d have liked it to have been settled at COTA, I had a gut feeling that this wouldn’t be that day. After the lights go out, and the cars roar up the hill to turn one, Sebastian Vettel

takes the lead, and continues to hold it for the next few laps, only to be passed by Lewis Hamilton who retained the lead throughout the race. You could say this had already been foreseen, but what had not been foreseen was the astonishingly epic drive from Max Verstappen, who drive all the way from 16th on the grid to taking 3rd place ahead of Kimi Raikkonen on the last lap of the race. Due to some questionable decisions, Max was removed from Podium due to going off the track during the pass. This caused a uproar from fans, and a great upset for Verstappen, which has lead to a split on the legitimacy of the ruling. I would argue that this has been the best race of the season, and what a race to witness in person! The sad, part is having to go back to waking up at the early hours of the morning to catch the races live, but with this being the best season in years in my eyes, what’s losing a few hours of sleep!? If you have not attended an F1 race, I believe that it is an absolute must for any die hard motorsports fan. If you get a chance to drive the beautiful facility that Is Circuit of the Americas….(in a childlike voice and laughter)….OH MY GOSH DOOOO IT!!!! -Steve Ellis@_SteveCEllis (Twitter & Instagram) 13

KEY CHAIN KID

HI! MY NAME IS DANIEL AND I AM 11 YEARS OLD. I started Daniels Keychains 4 Cancer for a community service project in order to receive my Black belt in American Tang Soo Do at Quest martial Arts this December. As well I have started my B’nai Mitzvah project so I can be Bar Mitzvah at Shomrei Torah Synagogue when I turn 13. I am making these keychains to help support Children’s Leukemia and Lymphoma. I also am hoping to raise enough money not only to donate but to buy enough material so I can go around to the hospitals like Children’s Hospital and places like the Ronald McDonald House so I can teach the children who are ill how to make these. Kind of like an occupational therapy for them. They can keep the keychains. Give them to friends and family or give them back to me to sell so they can buy whatever they want on their floors in the hospitals, such as video games, toys and books and art supplies. The Keychains cost $10 each and I also make dog leashes custom to order in any color we have or if there is a color you like and Paracord Planet carries it I will order it and make it for you. The cost of the dog leashes is $45-$65 depending on length. So that’s what I’m doing and I hope you will support Daniels Keychains 4 Cancer. Thank you, Daniel Adelson Lilspiked@gmail.com

George Jetson in his commuter! Note: the dome design of the box

Think back! What was the best thing about starting the new school year? For many, it was getting a new lunch box! Each year kids put a lot of thought into what box they would get. Just as what car we drive defines us, a lunch box made the statement of what one was about. It had to tell the dudes to “back off,” and the girls to “take notice.” Being the ‘Hot Wheel’ and ‘Matchbox’ car gear-head generation that we were, many naturally picked a lunch box with a car on it. Let’s take a step back. The first lunch boxes came about in the late 1800’s and were used by blue-collar workers to protect their food from the rigors of the workplace.

Mallory Llewellyn off to work with her Dukes of Hazard lunch box & thermos

Robinson’s Family station wagon (aka The Chariot)

The golden age of lunch boxes came about in the 1950’s. The first character-licensed lunch box was Mickey Mouse in 1935. Sales of that box skyrocketed! Aladdin Industries was looking for a way to increase sales of their plain steel lunch kits, as they were called then. They came out with ‘Hopalong Cassidy’ and ‘Roy Rogers’ boxes in the 50’s, and the craze was born. Aladdin later added the thermos, complete with additional graphics, making the lunch boxes even more desirable for kids and moms.

George Barris’ Munster Koach from the CBS Series “The Munsters”

With new T.V. shows and new fads coming along each year, the addition of new themes and images on lunch boxes would assure kids would have to get a new one each year. As a result, 120 million lunch boxes were sold between 1950 and 1970. In 1962, Aladdin embossed the front and back of the lunch boxes giving them a 3D effect.

007 and his DB5

All good things come to an end, and so it was with the metal lunch box. In the late 1970’s cost cutting saw the lunch boxes made out of plastic. Florida actually banned metal lunch boxes, fearing kids would use them as school yard weapons. 1987 saw the last massproduced metal lunch box, graced with the image of Rambo.

Fred and Barney at the drags!

So why are we talking about lunch boxes in a car magazine? Well, just look at all these cool lunch boxes! Many believe the cars are just as much the “stars” as the actors; you be the judge. Bon appétit 16

CHALKBOARD CHEVELLE

f you have been reading DrivenWorld for any period of time or know me personally, you know that I have a few cars. And, I just can’t seem to finish any of them off. They all have great potential and a couple are “almost” there, but...well, a show car I do not have. My 67 Chevelle is a really cool car. I bought it about five years ago. It was slammed on the ground with 20 inch wheels, no interior, no engine and no transmission. It was, a project. I am a glutton for punishment apparently and love making things as difficult as possible. The car was supposed to be painted, but, as a few of you out there have had this happen, and to be polite, a bodyshop dropped the ball. Really dropped the ball. But, I guess I had free storage for three years. Yea, in bodyshop prison for three years. When I finally pulled the car out, I decided to get the Chevelle running and try to enjoy it. The car has a radical 454 cubic inch engine. 12.5 to 1 compression with solid lifters and should be good for about 650hp. It sounds awesome. And, slammed on the ground, I love the look. Even in primer, I get thumbs up whenever I drive it. So, what do I do with the car. I do not feel like painting it. I do not

really feel like putting a ton of money into it, as I now have two kids, but I have to do something with it. I recalled that about ten years ago when my 68 Camaro was primered the first time (don’t ask), I let the kids write on it with chalk. They loved it. So...now that my eldest daughter is going to pre-school and I now have to attend all these different events, why not have a car that the kids can play with. Enter the Rustoleum Chalkboard paint at Home Depot. Really. My wife thought it was a fun idea and I figured that the car would look better in black than the light primer, so off to Home Depot I went. Three pints, a high density foam roller, some black paint and I was off to the races. Painting a car with a foam roller, well, its not the first time (don’t ask). This time it is not boat paint. My daughters were going to have a birthday party at the house so I figured why not beta test it at the house. I took a few hours a couple days before the party and rolled the paint on. The car was returning to it’s sinister black look. It was coming out awesome. The day of the party, the kids went crazy. They had so much fun. The entire car was covered in chalk. The following day I took it to Supercar Sunday and kids of all ages, even grandfathers could not resist. Jesse Kline asked me to bring it to his car show at the Calabasas Pumpkin festival and it was a huge hit. They had to clean the car multiple times and they went through tons of chalk. And this coming Sunday, it will make it’s debut at my daughter’s preschool. The Chalkboard Chevelle...no paint, no problem....let the kids have fun! 17

HILLBANK MOTORSPORTS Hillbank Motor Sports is the largest of the currently existing 18 retail outlets for Superformance cars in the world (12 domestic and 6 international). What are Superformance cars you ask? Superformance is considered to be the crème de la crème of replica and continuations car Manufacturers and distributors in the world. They are the only manufacturer licensed by Shelby American to build replica Cobras, and also build and distribute all the continuation Cobras for Shelby sold around the World. They build all versions of the Cobra, including the MKII 289 Slab Side, the MKII 289 FIA race car, the MKIII 427 (S/C and Roadster versions), and the Shelby Cobra 427, 289, Slabside and Daytona Coupe. But it doesn’t stop with the Cobra. In addition, they are the only manufacturer licensed by Safir Spares Ltd. to build MKI and MKII GT40s that are so true to the original car they are considered by Safir Spares Ltd. to be neither replica or continuation cars, but real and new GT40s. You can actually use parts manufactured by Superformance to restore an original 1960s GT40, including the all steel monocoque chassis. The other car and latest addition to the Superformance lineup is the iconic Grand Sport Corvette. Superformance with Duntov Motor cars, is the only manufacturer ever licensed by General Motors to build a car with their name on it. 18

In addition to the entire line-up of Superformance cars, Hillbank also is a US dealer for Caterham Cars. Caterham acquired license from Lotus for the old Super Seven which is now sold by Hillbank as the Caterham Seven. All of this has come about in part through the vision, determination and hard work of Lance Stander and his family. In 2004, Lance and his family had acquired the U.S. distribution rights for Superformance from Hi-Tech Automotive CEO Jim Price. (Superformance is a quintessential family business. Lance Stander and wife Deborah run the company with all three of their children: Shayna, Ashton and Branden.) A year later, Stander cut a deal with Price to assume control of Superformance and own its tooling and IP. Hi-Tech continues to manufacture the cars alongside other niche vehicles such as the Noble M400 and others in its 270,000 square-foot facility, one of the largest privately owned automobile factories in the world. Lance has now begun to expand the Hillbank brand with dealerships in Michigan and most recently, Arizona with a goal to make the quality of the retail outlets for Superformance cars as good as the cars themselves. Walking into the main showroom of Hillbank Motor Sports in Irvine, CA that becomes readily apparent. Once through the front lobby you find yourself in a sea of the best vintage sports cars you have ever seen. Hillbank keeps approximately 70 cars in inventory at any given time providing customers with not only a lot to choose from off the showroom floor, but also great visuals for different color and stripe combinations. The showroom consists of a variety of new and pre-owned vehicles.

The new cars as they come from the factory are a complete “Rolling Chassis” which means the cars look completely finished less the engine and transmission (or transaxle in the case of the GT40). This is the same way that Carroll Shelby received the Shelby Cobra’s back in the sixties from AC Cars in England. The customer then gets to choose what engine and transmission or transaxle they want in the car to suit their specific needs. The Rolling Chassis can also be ordered to customer specification, with lead times running anywhere from 6 to 8 months from order to delivery in Irvine depending on the model and factory demand. Customers have many standard paint colors to choose from, but can also specify any custom color they like for an additional charge. The interior can be customized as well, with the factory providing many options for different colors of leather, diamond stitching, alcantara, piping, etc. For those of you reading this and thinking these are kit cars, think again… Superformance only manufactures a complete Rolling Chassis with All New parts, less engine and transmission for the past 25 years. This means the quality of fit and finish is beyond anything else you will find in the world of replica and continuation cars, and one of the major reasons Superformance is the only manufacturer licensed by Shelby to build these cars. The door gaps, panel fit and quality of construction has to be seen to be believed. Closing a door on any of these cars ends in a solid “thunk” one would expect in an expensive, imported luxury car. Superformance has produced over 5000 cars to date. That is 5 times more than Carroll Shelby did in the sixties with the Cobra’s. The choices between the models allow you to select a car for just about

anything. Want to cruise PCH in class and style? You can’t go wrong in a MKII 289 Slab Side (my personal preference is the Raven Black with the Special Red Leather interior). Want to tear up the track in the car that won Le Mans in 1969? Spec out a MKI GT40 Wide Body in Gulf Livery. Want to terrorize the streets and set off car alarms? Go for a MKIII Cobra 427 S/C with those classic side pipes. There are so many models and options, you can find or create a car that will do just about anything you want and do it in style! Love the cars but have no experience with this type of car? The knowledgeable advisors at Hillbank can assist you in determining the model of car best suits your needs, choosing options and helping with engine and transmission selection. There are also shops local to Hillbank and the other Superformance Dealers around the USA and the rest of the World, who are very skilled and knowledgeable in completing the drivetrain installation as well. It is definitely worth a visit to Irvine to see this mecca of 1960s sports cars reinvented to be enjoyed today. Motor4Toys 14th Annual Charity Car Show & Toy Drive he 14th Annual Motor4Toys Charity Car Show and Toy Drive is around the corner! On Sunday, December 3rd, 2017 the entire car community will come together with one purpose in mind, to help children during the holiday season. It is that simple and it is truly magical. Just about every type of car imaginable will be present and will be loaded with toys to donate to the Motor4Toys Charity Car Show and Toy Drive. The car show kicks off the toy drive season for the Motor4Toys Charitable Foundation which over the last thirteen years has collected over five million dollars of toys which have been distributed to needy children throughout the state of California. The Foundation revolves around the very kind motorsport community and over the last handful of years, has grown outside of the car world. Many schools, businesses, Chambers of Commerce and even city officials have gotten behind the toy drive and helped to collect toys during the holiday season. Every year, the Motor4Toys Charitable Foundation continues to grow with the kindness and support from so many kind people. Over the past thirteen years, so many people have played such an important role in making the Foundation what it has become, that when you think of Motor4Toys, you think of the car community. Every single person that has ever given a toy is considered part of the Motor4Toys family. As the Foundation has grown, many people have asked how can they support the toy drive outside of the car realm? That is simple. First and foremost, we would love for you to do a toy drive at your school or business. Many people have actually done Motor4Toys holiday parties at their business or home and asked the guests to bring toys in lieu of wine or other gifts. It kind of changes the whole atmosphere of a holiday dinner. It has become a tradition for many. How long does Motor4Toys collect toys? All year round. We collect toys all the way through the month of December and have the ability to get the toys into the hands of children very effectively. Last minute toy donations are always appreciated. We receive toy donations throughout the year and have the ability to distribute toys all year long. Children always need something to know that people they may not know care about them. For more information, please visit the Motor4Toys website: www.motor4Toys.com You may also donate online as well. See you at the car show on Dec. 3rd. It is going to be one for the record books! -Dustin & the Motor4Toys Family www.motor4toys.com

CARMEL VALLEY ROAD TRIP TO MONTEREY If you’re a Southern California based motorsports fan like me, you probably make one or two trips to the Monterey Peninsula each year for events like the Pebble Beach Concourse and its associated week of activities, or to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for major race track events like the IMSA WeatherTech Monterey Grand Prix, the Pirelli Challenge, and the Monterey Historic Races. The motorsports enthusiast’s road of choice from Los Angeles to Monterey is up Highway 101 to San Luis Obispo over to Highway 1 Pacific Coast Highway. View wise, it’s one of the world’s most beautifully spectacular roads and a sports car daydream of tight and twists. But for most trips to Monterey and back, you often don’t want to drive on Pacific Coast Highway more than once. Depending on the time of year and time of day, it can be backed up with tourist traffic. And you may just want to get where you’re going more quickly, and have more variety in beautiful California views and roads, without any traffic. My favorite choice as an alternative route going to or coming from Monterey is Carmel Valley Road. It’s 60 twisting miles of two lane blacktop only known to, and coveted by motorsports enthusiasts. You can drive for miles on end without ever encountering another car. Back in the late ‘80s and early 90s my sport bike buddies and I, sometimes as part of the annual Motorcyclist Magazine ride (more like a race) that took the back roads from Los Angeles to Laguna Seca, Monterey, for the annual AMA Superbike races, Carmel Valley Road was always the highpoint of our ride. Since the mid 90’s I’ve driven up Pacific Coast Highway One by car for

shooting and working at SBK World Superbike, and we’d always take PCH up from Los Angeles to Monterey. But this year PCH has been closed around Big Sur because of Bridge Replacements, and a last winter’s big rain induced road collapse which slid away a section of the road into the ocean below. While repairs are being made on Hwy 1 which might take another year, for this past September’s IMSA WeatherTech race weekend at Mazda Raceway, when I drove my BMW M4 north from Los Angeles, up Highway 101, turning off at Greenfield to catch Camel Valley Road into Monterey. From Greenfield you’ll take Hwy G16 / Elm Avenue, across the almost famous steel girder Arroyo Seco River Bridge used in many Hollywood films, continue on Hwy G16 as it turns west and changes from Elm Avenue, to Arroyo Seco Road, then into Carmel Valley Road. Along the way the Central valley changes from rolling hills, into majestic mountains, then it to a canopy of secluded tree shaded valley roads. Carmel Valley Road will eventually bring you into the beautiful little village of Carmel Valley, just over the hill from Mazda Raceway, or just 10 miles further to Carmel by the Sea / Hwy 1. There’s a couple of great restaurants and bars here if you can’t wait to get to the Coast, but I also recommend a visit here to the Talbot Motorcycle Museum which has a beautiful collection of legendary and classic European 1950-60s racing and sportbikes and dirt bikes, plus a couple of more modern MotoGP bikes on loan from local owners / former World Champions Wayne Rainey and Kenny Roberts, Junior. From the town of Carmel Valley, it just 10 more miles along Carmel Valley Road to the Coast. It’s one of the America’s great road trips, and a must do as an alternative to taking Pacific Coast Highway 1 on any trip you might take to the Monterey Peninsula or back home.

PUMPKIN FEST CALABASAS Coastline Motorsport once again hosted the Car Show at the Calabasas Pumpkin Festival. The annual festival brings in almost twenty thousand visitors over the course of two days. There are attractions for just about everyone, young to old. From crafts and live bands to a three story high slide and a park, there were smiles all around. The Car Show portion of the festival is a “people’s” choice with about ten different categories. Best-in-show, to best interior and so on. There were about 40 cars on display from car community members and an additional ten that Coastline Motorsport had customized. The show was a huge hit and the boys from the Classic Chevys of Socal had the greatest participation. With about 10 tri-fives lined up, it was like walking back in history. The spectators loved the 55,56,57 Chevys and they took tons of pictures of the cars. Grandparents telling their grandkids about the cars and fathers telling their sons, it was so much fun to watch. The Pumpkin Festival was a total success and I am sure the show next year will be bigger and better! See you there.

IMSA

CONTINENTAL TIRE RACE WEEKEND | LAGUNA SECA he WeatherTech sponsored IMSA Road racing Championship offers the most incredible racing and fun weekend in any form of motorsports, with numerous class races, exotic factory prototype and high- end factory production sports cars, open race paddocks and pit walks were you can meet all the drivers and teams, the beautiful grid girls, and check out the race cars up close. Making IMSA races even more exciting, if not a little confusing, is that their different car classes usually race on the same track at the same time. There is a big speed variable between the different classes in Prototype and Production based cars with different power, weight and aerodynamic performance., and with a full field of up to 60 cars on a tight road course, in races from 2.5 hours up to 4, 8, 12 and 24 hours long! FACT | While NASCAR and Indy Car has experienced a decline in attendance in recent years, IMSA has seen a growth in fan attendance. There always have been two IMSA rounds in California, one on the Streets of Long Beach in April in conjunction with the Indy Car round, and in the past followed by Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, in Monterey a few weeks later. But this year 2017, the Laguna Seca round has now been moved to mid-September, a much better date 5-months apart from Long Beach, encouraging many Southern California fans like myself to make the road trip to Beautiful Monterey in Central California for another IMSA round on one of the best spectator road race courses in America. Making it even more worthwhile to make the road trip up to Laguna Seca, was the fact this now being the next-to last round of the season, all the IMSA class championship s were on the line. Making it even better for me, as a Corvette owners is the Corvette Hospitality Area in the Paddock at all the IMSA rounds, making it a great place to relax with friends, meet Corvette factory management and the race team, check out each others’ cars, and enjoy food and beverages in a cool shaded area with tables and chairs and live TV race monitors. The IMSA P Prototype Class In recent years the American based IMSA Championship has become more in-step with the cars raced in the FIA World Endurance Championship like at the LeMans 24-hour race, and will continue to become even closer. The exotic 1000hp+ FIA P1 prototypes with both Turbo motors and expensive energy recovery systems currently raced by Porsche and Toyota will go away, and the P2 Daytona Prototype internationals (DPi) raced in IMSA using more affordable Spec Chassis from select builders, with a team or manufacturer’s engine of choice, will become the normal. The IMSA Prototype cars sponsored by Cadillac are essentially Chevrolet LS3 push-rod V-8 engines. There are also turbo engines form Nissan and Honda, and privateer teams can choose the new generic Gibson DOHC 4.0 lite race engine. Prototype cars have a weight minimum of 2,050 lbs / 600 hp maximum. IMSA GTLM / GT LeMans (Pro) Basically the GT LeMans class sports car are “production cars” but really, they aren’t. The only production part on the Corvette GTLM is the windshield. No one at IMSA even knows when the Porsche 911 mid-engine car being raced this year will go into production. Just as the Ford GT40s were raced last year, but didn’t go into production until this year. Class regulated 525hp/ 2733 lbs. T IMSA GTD / GT Daytona (Pro-Am) The GT Daytona cars are, supposedly 1-year old factory cars, fully owned by privateer teams with no factory support, but like the new Acura in the class, they get an exception when they are just released their first year, and it helps to fill the class. The new Turner Motorsports GTD BMW M6 is the exact car as the all new GTLM BMW M6s with full factory support, but next year Turner must run the car on their own budget. One of the 2-3 drivers per car 26

in this class is required to be an “Amateur” but this is played fairly loose. Class regulated 520hp/ 2866 lbs. All the drivers in Prototype and GTLM are full-time salaried Professional racers. Confusing are the Pro / Amateur drivers in the GTD class. They are supposedly not paid by a factory, but you can guess that many of them like now 2-time GTD Champions #63 Ferrari drivers Alessandro Balzan and Christina Nielsen are on Ferrari’s factory payroll. Just that the money gets sent under the table to the team’s dealership sponsor first, then the dealer writes the checks. The Class racing in IMSA is very close and exciting between the different because IMSA uses what is called the “Balance of Performance” to adjust the competitiveness of the different types of cars. If a car continuously sets quick qualifying or race times, the next race it might have to carry more weight, or run a smaller engine intake restrictor. Turbocharged cars like the BMW M6 have their turbo boost watched by IMSA on a computer monitors during the race, and if the boost pressure exceeds the 525hp rating for the class, the cars are penalized. For 2017 BMW will replace its current M4 with inline 6-cylinder twin turbo engine, with its all new M8 luxury sport coupe with a twin turbo 4.0 liter V-8 engine. But it will still be restricted in race trim to

525hp. The rules are all very flexible as needed, and it makes for close, tight exciting racing. This weekend at Mazda Raceway the class winner in Prototype was #90 Visit Florida Racing Lieger LMP2 Cadillac powered coupe with drivers Marc Goossens and Renger van Der Zande, followed by #31 Whallen Engineering Cadillac DPi driven by Dane Cameron and Eric Curran. But the 3rd Place finishing #10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi of brothers Jordan and Ricky Taylor picked up enough points to clinch the Class Championship with the final race still o go 2 weeks later at Road Atlanta. In GTLM the race winner was the #24 Rahal Letterman BMW M4 of drivers John Edwards and Martin Tomczyk, followed by the #62 Risi Competizion Ferrari 488 GTE of Toni Vilander and Giancarlo Fisicella, with third to the #911 factory Porsche 911 RSR mid-engine car of Patrick Pilet and Dirk Warner. Finishing 4th was the #3 factory Corvette C7R of Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia, earning enough points to wrap up the class title for the 2nd year in a row! Not bad for 60-year old push rod V-8 technology. In GTD it was reigning 2016 champions Christina Nielsen and Alasandro Balzan taking first place in their #63 Scuderia Corse Ferrari GTS and picking up just enough points, that starting on the grid at the final Road Atlanta

IMSA race in two weeks would earn them just enough points to repeat their Championship title again for 2017. This year, with the Laguna Seca IMSA round moved to September, it was my first time up here for the track’s IMSA race and it was incredible. Making the trip even more enjoyable was my Friday drive up to Monterey and taking the scenic sports car back road Camel Valley Road. On Saturday I meet many of the drivers, including 18-year old Aurora Straus, the youngest female pro racing driver ever, and a student at Harvard. Then watched the Pirelli Challenge and Lamborghini Trofeo races, visited the Talbot Motorcycle Museum in the town of Carmel Valley, and attended the Corvette Club banquet in the Marriot Hotel on Saturday night with guest speakers from the Corvette factory and the race team. On race day I visited with all the factory race teams in the Paddock and on Pit Lane, walked the entire track and watched and photographed the IMSA race start on Sunday at the famed Corkscrew, then relaxed in the shade in the Beer Tent at the top the hill there, with a cold Import tap brew while watching the race unfold across the entire Laguna Seca track down in the valley below. It was awesome. An extended Monterey Peninsula weekend with IMSA Racing at Mazda Laguna Seca is a must do for any sports car or racing enthusiast. 27

A DECADE OF DREAM CARS Decade of Dream Cars was the theme for this year’s 10th Annual Ventura Motorsports Gathering, hosted by the Ventura Sports and Race Car Club on 10-1-2017. The main lawn at the Ventura Marina Village, Ventura Harbor, CA was where over 50 classic Dream Cars were on display for public viewing and judging by a 6 man judging team using “French Rule Judging” most common at many Concours D’Elegance gatherings. Judges will decide the awards by consensus based on; originality, quality of the restoration, authenticity and presentation style and impact. This year’s top award for 2017 “Dream Car Award’ was designed and created by Paul McNabb. The Ventura Sports and Race Car Club now in its 10th year of service has approximately 50 members from the local area. The club proudly supports the AVID Program at Ventura High which helps fast track deserving low income students who will be the first in their family to attend college through college prep counselling, trips to universities, class selection and even financial aid advice. Dream cars on display included; Bugatti, Porsche, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lotus, Ford, Lincoln, Maserati, Mercedes, MG, Corvette, Austin Healy and Citroen to name a few. Besides all the stunning cars to check out there was a fashion show and performances by two opera singers with Opera by the Glass who sang 2 songs from Anna Bolena, showing 11-17 and 19-2017 at the Museum of Ventura County. Well Done!, Ventura Sports and Race Car Club on another very classy Ventura Motorsports Gathering for 2017.

MONTEREY

CAR WEEK AUCTIONS 2017

onterey Car Week has so many activities scheduled so close together and even overlapping in many cases that visitors must schedule their time wisely to maximize what to see and do. We always make time to attend the major auctions to see very rare, unique and usually very expensive vehicles. Whenever I admire the auction vehicles I try to put it in perspective knowing full well that the cars I see will likely end up in a private collection in the U.S. or overseas and I will never have the opportunity to see them again. Many of the vehicles for sale have an amazing provenance and racing history which makes their viewing that much more special. After the 2016 Monterey Car Week auction sales closed with a total of $338M, the experts weren’t really sure how the sales would stack up for 2017. There seemed to be so much turmoil around the globe and at home it was anybody’s guess. Well, apparently those outside forces didn’t impact the auctions much as the total sales came in at $328M. That was just a slight dip and a solid showing at the major auctions this year. It appears that collector cars are still a viable investment tool based on the amount of activity shown. The top sale this year was again claimed by RM Sotheby’s with a sale of $22.55M that surpassed their top sale last year of $21.78M. Sales of the number 2 through number 10 highest priced automobiles sold at auction during Car Week were divided among Bonham’s, Gooding and RM. Here are some highlights from the top five auctions that took place during Monterey Car Week listing the auctions in alphabetical order. The prices listed came from a number of sources and are for comparison sakes only: Bonham’s: This auction is located near Quail and is known as Bonham’s Quail Lodge Auction. The company has been in the business since 1793 when they were founded in London, England. They are a worldwide operation and car auction sales represent a very small portion of their overall revenue. In Monterey they follow the quality over quantity business model and always have a few extremely rare and or valuable cars for sale and seem to be near the top in top ten sale prices. They offered over 105 vehicles and achieved total sales of $56.43M. Their big draw this year was the offering of a very low mileage, single owner, silver 1995 McLaren F1 Coupe that sold for $15.62M and was the second highest sale price during the week. This set a record high price for the sale of a McLaren F1 and also the most valuable post-1970 automobile to ever sell at auction. The other top sellers at Bonham’s were a 1963 Jaguar E-Type Lightweight Competition Coupe ($8M), a 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB Alloy ($3.08M), a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 ($2.52M) and another Ferrari, a 2003 Enzo ($2.04M). Last year Bonham’s had a Lamborghini tractor for sale and this year they were selling a Porsche diesel tractor. I guess they have cornered the market on sports tractors. I haven’t seen a Ferrari tractor, maybe next year? Gooding & Company: Described as the “Official” Pebble Beach Auction, Gooding is located adjacent to the many events surrounding Pebble Beach and of course the Concours d’Elegance. The Tour d’Elegance drive even has the finish line directly outside their front entrance. Gooding is noted for selecting a small group of coveted vehicles for display and sale during car week as shown by their $91.5M in total sales. This top tier auction sold the third highest priced automobile of the week, a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/C for $14.52M. The second highest valued vehicle sold by Gooding and the fourth highest priced vehicle sold overall was probably my favorite of all auction cars this year, a classic 1970 Porsche 917K racer for $14.08M. That sale broke the previous price for a Porsche sold at auction, a 1982 Porsche 956 that Gooding sold for $10.12M in 2015. Numbers three through five sold at Gooding were a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Series I Cabriolet ($4.84M), a 1956 Maserati A6G/54 Berlinetta ($4.4M) and a 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari ($3.52M). That’s a pretty good return for two years of ownership. Gooding also sold an amazing pair of unrestored cars that were owned by the same family. They were a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing ($1.67M) and a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster ($1.03M). They were absolutely

beautiful sixty year old automobiles in their natural state. Mecum: This auction is the largest held during car week and greater in the total number of vehicles available for sale than all of the other auctions put together. Mecum enjoyed total sales of $34M for another successful Monterey Car Week. I always enjoy the diversity while viewing the Mecum collection of very old to very new automobiles, trucks, motorcycles and even a drag boat and a trailer or two. This year I checked out a drag boat, walked a few feet to view a 1970’s Pontiac Trans Am and then looked over to see a late model Porsche 911 Turbo next to a 1955 Chevy with flames. You just never know what you’ll see there. The three top sales at Mecum were almost new vehicles, a 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari ($3.45M), a 2015 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse ($2.35M) and a 2017 Ferrari F12tdf ($1.25M). I wonder if the owners drove each of them around the block a few times and took them straight to the auction. The remaining of the top five sales were a 2004 Porsche Carrera GT ($985K) and a 1988 Porsche 959 Komfort ($950K). Motorcycle sales were also strong at Mecum and 39 sales accounted for $1.54M in sales. The top seller was the oldest-known original-paint Indian that sold for $190K. Another top seller was a 1923 Indian Chief previously

owned by Steve McQueen ($110K). They offered old Harleys and a few original condition Husqvarna dirt bikes from the 1970’s among others. RM Sotheby’s: RM is the world’s largest auction house for investment quality automobiles and they provide service to the global collector car market. The hotel complex housing the RM auction has been under construction for the past two years so the cars were displayed in an inside room, and a large outside structure with the remaining vehicles spread outside in various areas. The construction had no negative impact on the auction. The top auction sale during Monterey Car Week this year was again claimed by RM with a sale of $22.55M which set a record for the highest price for a British car and highest priced Aston Martin sold at auction. The top selling car this year was again a British race car, a 1956 Aston Martin DBR1 Roadster in the requisite racing green. RM took five of the top ten sales spots for all Car Week auctions and came out on top again overall with $132.99M in total sales. In addition to the top selling Aston Martin, the second highest priced sale was for a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta that sold for $8.30M. The remaining three automobiles in the top five were a 1959 Aston Martin DB4GT Prototype ($6.76M), a 1955 Ferrari 121 LM Spider ($5.72M) and a 1959 Ferrari 410 Superamerica Series III Coupe ($5.33M). RM also offered

an amazing single-owner group of 13 iconic Ferrari examples from the past 50 years. They celebrated another excellent year with numerous top tier automobiles offered for sale. Russo & Steele: Located on the waterfront at Fisherman’s Wharf in Downtown Monterey, Russo & Steele always seems to have a couple of surprises that you don’t see every day or ever. This year they offered a ten year old blue SSC Ultimate Aero (when was the last time you saw one?), a 1965-66 silver Ford Mustang coupe with burgundy flames and a double stacked blower that stood two feet above the hood (my first sighting of one of those) and many other crazy rides in their lot for sale. The inside collection housed a smaller group of their higher end offerings and probably accounted for the bulk of their $8.6M in total sales. They also had a few vendors that offered old fluorescent gas station and car brand signs and auto memorabilia. Leading the sales at Russo & Steel this year was a 1961 Ferrari Europa Coupe that sold for $1.16M. Followed by and rounding out the top five was a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT ($671K), a 2008 MercedesBenz McLaren SLR ($352K), a 1966 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 ($297K) and a 1983 Ferrari 512 ($231K). It was another great year for a unique auction.

FORD SPORT COMPACT WEST CAR SHOW 201 7

fter years without an annual show for the Ford Sport Compact car community, I decided to resurrect the FSC West car show. Many things have changed since the original show in 2011 including the introduction of the current generation Ford Fiesta, MK3 Focus, and the introduction ST and RS performance nameplates to the US market. Social media has also been integrated into everyone’s lives now, and has created a rift within the community and several dozen separate groups of owners have been created, all competing to be ‘the’ group to associate with. FocusRush has been in existence since 2001 and isn’t going anywhere any time soon, which led itself to be the perfect host for this year’s show. The Santa Paula airport was kind enough to offer up the venue for the event, and the FSC’s almost completely filled the space. Next year’s show should be even better with even more cars and vendors, and will be the 20th Anniversary of the Ford Focus. We can’t wait!
