Letter from editor: Damn toilets. The little handle on the toilet came loose. Yeah, most of us have changed those at some point in time. Not rocket science, but another thing to get done. When I examined why it came loose, it appeared that the plastic castle nut that held the handle to the tank wore a little. The threads just would not grab. So, all I need is a .50 cent plastic castle nut that they are sure to have in the plumbing section of OSH, right? Wrong! They have everything but. So, with no other option, I have to buy a whole assembly. It is not that it is expensive, it is just a function of logic, and all I needed was that nut. So, I take the new assembly home, and naturally it was slightly off, it wouldn’t work. So, back to plan A, all I need is the castle nut. I head back over to OSH to see if they have something that can work. I am looking in the hardware section, the plumbing section; all I need is that little castle nut. Wow, I am spending way too much time on this toilet. But, now I am determined. After every logical and not so logical consideration, I figure I am off to a different store. A little frustrated (after all, I only need a plastic castle nut), I am about to leave when all of the sudden I see a familiar face, an older gentleman that works at OSH. He had helped me in the past and was pretty creative. I explain the situation and we both concur that I should just buy the cheapest assembly and use the castle nut in the package. I explained a little further that the threads on both the stud and the castle nut are a little worn. I see his wheels turning and turning. He asks; “Did you try wrapping plumbing tape over the stud’s threads five to six times to build it back up?” It was one of those moments where the light bulb literally bursts above your head and you are worried that the glass shattering might cut your face. No, could it really be that easy? We both grin; he explains that he ran a machine shop and he kept machines going with “paper clips, duct tape, bobby pins, masking
tape, glue” adding “son, you always have to get the job done.” We both smile, part ways, I hurry home, grab my plumbers tape and VIOLA! Fixed, no cost, perfect. Thank you for the lesson sir. I was at a local custom shop the other day, Coastline Motorsports. I like the shop and the guys over there. As I was waiting for Jesse (shop owner), there was a young man sitting watching TV. Naturally, I am a big mouth and I start asking him why he is not at work during the week. He is dressed in slightly over sized clothes, puffy jacket, ball cap, and unshaven. Figure he must be one of those “hanger-outer kids” (when I say kid, he is probably 30 years old) that somehow gets through life bouncing around here to there. You know the kids I am talking about, they seem not so serious and have a new killer phone with all the gadgets, a newer SUV with big wheels and a loud exhaust. So, being the Chatty Kathy that I am, I keep at him: “What, you don’t work?” He replies that he is just “kind of taking it easy for a while.” “What the hell does that mean”, I think to myself, so I keep at him, trying to figure out why he doesn’t have a job. “What do you do for money?” He mentions reluctantly and probably to shut me up, that he just got out of the military, that he had done 12 years. OOPS! Do I feel stupid. This young man, as it turns out, had accomplished quite a lot. He had done a few tours in the Middle East. He had seen more than his share of war. He was/is an Army Ranger. He had been shot and blown up. He had seen many of his “brothers” sacrifice and die before his eyes. He was an instructor and served in some pretty amazing commands. This unassuming young man was truly very accomplished and given his all to his country. Thank you. I was telling the story of my father at Supecar Sunday to one of the regulars. My father was an orphan, never adopted. As I was telling the story another regular walks up and proceeds to listen. When finished with the story about my dad, the second gentleman pulls me aside and says, “I almost started crying when you were talking about your dad”. I was kind of shocked. Standing before me was a man in his 70’s, always very pleasant, always in a good mood. He drives any number of his cars into Supercar. From
exotics to hot rods to classics. He is always well dressed and knows all the right people. Why was this man going to cry?
He begins to tell me his story. How he was on his own at fourteen. How he was hungry growing up. How, while listening to the story I told of my father, he had an epiphany. For years, when his wife would put a plate of food down, he would always eat all of it, even if he was not hungry. She often asked him why? He would just laugh it off. While listening about my father’s hungry childhood, he realized that when he was young, if he was lucky enough to have a full plate of food, well, he would eat it all. “When you don’t know when your next meal is coming, you eat everything on the plate.” How he lived in a garage and was lucky for that! Why would I write about these three different men? They amazed me. Truly amazed. There is something about ability and perseverance. Something about not judging a book by its cover. Something about not judging someone without walking a mile in their shoes. The ability to think, adapt, over come and get that damn job done. You see I think that there are so many heroes that walk around us, we just don’t know it. So many different stories that might make us sit back and take notice. I come from the school of any job, honest and done well, one can take pride and honor in. I love stories of people overcoming. I love the drive; I love the motivation. I love the human spirit. These three men, one a millionaire from nothing, one selling toilet parts and another sitting on a couch, they have lived it and they have earned it. Hats off to you, we need more people like you three. What does all this have to do with a car magazine? It is not the car that makes the car community, it is the people. On any given Sunday, at Supercar Sunday there are so many of you that have accomplished so much and mostly without recognition. I want to tell that story, your story. I believe that we need the illustration of great men and women to motivate those around us. To show that it was not given, but earned. That achievement is the definition of the human spirit and that we need that human spirit to soar. Thank you! Dustin-

The 9th Annual Still Saving Lives Car Show For the past eight yeasr, the L.A.P.D. Valley Traffic Divison has been putting on a worlderful car show. The purpose of the show is to generate much needed funds for the L.A.P.D. Valley Traffic Division. These funds are used to not only buy needed equipment to keep our officers safe, but also to buy safety equipment (like helmets) for children in the community. At the show, there will be over 400 cars from all over the state. L.A.P.D. will be pulling out all stops to support this event. There will be displays from L.A.P.D. SWAT, K-9 Units, Motorcycle Drill Team, to name a few. The organizers of this show also expect a start studded celebrity turnout. George Barris is bringing out the Munster Mobile to share with the community too! Clubs like the Classic Chevy Club have supported this event with almost total club attendance. The Team at Coastline Motorsports, another long time supporter, will be there with amazing cars on display as well as bringing their shop over to display their wares and work.
Did we mention the food yet? Come hungry. One of the most exciting additions to the show has been the food trucks. That’s right! Organizers have contracted with the best 25 food trucks in LA. Come hungry and come early! If you are like me, you love to support those who keep us safe. This show is a great opportunity to give back. Again, proceeds will go to help not only L.A.P.D. Valley Traffic, but chidlren in our community.

1969 Fastback Dreaming Story by Heather Jederlinich
I love my 1969 Fastback Mustang I will never forget the first moment I saw her. I was having dinner with my aunt and as I looked out the window of the restaurant I noticed an oxidized red “my dream car”mustang pulling into the parking lot. I instantly pointed it out to my aunt telling her how much I loved it and a few things about it. We were suppose to be meeting my fiance for dinner and he was lagging behind. A couple minutes after the car pulled in, he comes walking into the restaurant. Hmmmm........ Before he sits down he tells us to come outside because he has something to show me. Of course I blurted out “not that 1969 red fastback Mustang???” Crossing my fingers behind my back hoping it was true. He gave me a look and proceeded to walk my aunt and I over to the car. I was holding back any amount of excitement that I had. He had started buying old muscle cars, fixing them up and then selling them. Thinking that this one would be getting sold shortly I didn’t want to become attached... Silly, get attached to a car. The car was beautiful, oxidized and all. She sat there in
all her glory, the back end just a little higher than the rest making her look like a stink bug. He asked what I thought.......Playing it cool I complimented it and telling him what a great purchase it was. Do you want to drive it? He asked. OF COURSE I wanted to drive it but, I told myself no, I can’t get attached. After getting it back home there came a wonderful surprise....He asked me if I would like to keep the car. I had been carrying around a picture of a red ‘69 mustang in my wallet for years, it was worn and tattered . To think that this picture is coming to life was a surreal feeling. We kept her and I drove her. I changed her oil, her radiator, vacuumed and shined her up. I love her and she is mine. With a new paint job and some tender loving care she looks better than I could have ever imagined. When owning an old muscle car I have learned that there is a level of stress anytime you get behind the wheel. I am always on high alert to any sound, smell or feeling that seems to be off. I grip the wheel and upon approaching certain scenarios I
become quite tense. I always drive around with the basics, jumper cables, flashlight, transmission fluid and a funnel. It has made me realize that when something does go wrong the right thing to do is not to panic. From loosing all power on the freeway to stalling out and having to be pushed out of an intersection I must say I never lost my cool. After every outing in my car the moment I pull into the garage I let out a huge sigh and can relax my shoulders. I made it back ,she is still running and AAA was never called. I know that day will come when everything “should” work perfect, I use that term perfect loosely for she is an 40 plus year old car, I don’t expect her to. Issues and all, I must say I love jumping in behind the wheel, rolling down the windows and with the smell of fresh air and exhaust, taking a scenic drive through the Southern California canyons and feel ing my worries melt away. I still have that picutre in my wallet but, I must say, my car is hands down 100 times better.
This was the first night of owning the car. The car sat like a stink bug and was very rough. But boy was she beautiful.

The SuperCar Sunday Driven World Project Car There comes a time in your life when you find yourself at a cross roads. One of those moments for me was when I saw my first project car. For years I had been saving for a Camaro. Of course, I wanted a 1969 Z28, but with a small budget, I knew that would not happen. So, for years I scoured Craigslist for a project car. It was a fateful Wednesday night when I saw the ad: “For sale: 1968 RS/SS project car, in Simi Valley.” Ends up, I was the first one to call. The gentleman told me he would let me be the first to see it as I was the first caller. The next day, I called a friend and mechanic, Lori. Lori knows more about cars then most men and can turn wrenches with the best. I picked her up at her shop and we headed to Simi Valley. When I fist saw the car I knew I was in over my head. I knew that I would be out of

my league to buy this car. Everything needed to be redone, EVERYTHING. The car, missing most parts and filled with rust, had no gas tank, no battery in the car , no window, it was basically a shell with a motor, a broken 3-speed trans. Man was I scared. Lori assured me it was “not that bad”, famous last words.... When the owner said he was going to start it, I was in shock. He pulled a batter from the garage and some jumper cables. There was no fuel tank, so he had a one gallon gas tank with a fuel line run to it. There was no ignition switch, so he grabbed a flathead screwdriver. Mind you the car was on jackstands, this was going ot be something. The car fired righ up. Sounded strong, a nice cam. The reason I bought the basketcase? Well, I figured I was going to be one of two guys. Guy number one, standing on a street corner 15 years from that moment as a 1968 Camaro drives by. I would be there with my kid and I would say, “Son when I was 28 years old
I had a chance to buy a 1968 Camaro Project car....” Or, I would be the guy driving the car with my kid in it. I wanted to be that guy. So, I bought the car. I spent countless hours at Lori’s shop. Sanding, removing, a frustrating process. I learned. I had a long way to go. I made a deal with a bodyshop to redo the: quarters, fenders, doors, trunk, hood, etc. Everthing came off. I would stop by weekly to check the process. The car came back straight as an arrow! I didn’t have the money to paint it, so I would go primered for a while. Fair enough. Next step, put the engine back in. Sure, I tore the car apart, did I document or label parts? Of course not. Did I organize the parts? Of course not. Won’t make that mistake again. Did I mention I forgot to put a pin in one of the legs in the engine stand and the engine came crashing down on the brand new and perfectly straight body? Won’t make that mistake again.
2. The camaro stripped, it is off to the bodyshop for the first time.
3. New quarters on, we are moving forward.
4. The car is prepped for paint, but have to wait due to budget constraints.
5. Tired of grey primer, we went flat black. The car looks great!
6. Yes, that is boat paint. Yes, I did roll it on. Don’t ask.
Not having paint on the car, I went from grey primer to black. The car looked tough. That was great for a while. Then I read about painting the car with a foam roller and getting good results. Off I was to the boat store for boat paint and the hardware store for rollers. Yeah, won’t do that again. Getting new parts is like your birthday. I remember when my Hotchkis Supsension kit came in along with my big Wilwood Brakes. Woowee! I am becoming a race car. Now that was exciting. Well, until I blew my motor on PCH. So much for a race car. Then there was the idea of doing a fuel injected engine swap with a 6-speed

transmission and a Magnacharger Superchareger. I would do that again. Back to a race car. I think the thing that I love about this car is that it was my educational process. It was the trials and tribulations of being a car guy. A real car guy. Of paying my dues, cutting my hands, learning patients, creativiy and awareness. Buying tools, buying wrong tools, borrowing tools and lots of calls and internet searchs on “how-to”. So now the car is back in pieces and is being prepped for paint at Western Collsion Center. Now to pick a color. Looks like I am getting closer to having the car of my dreams. Little by little, step by step. Of course, I still need to mini-tub it, buy new
wheels for the mini-tub, put in an interior, lots of parts, perhaps heat and air, windows that roll up and down, lights that work, a parking brake, door handles on the inside, a fire system, good grief, when does it ever end? I suppose if it has taken me eight years to get to this point, what is another eight! Supercar Sunday has been SUPER! You never quite know who or what is going to roll into the Southern California’s favorite weekly car show. The diversity of vehicles has been off of the charts. From some of the rarest and most exotic of cars on the planet, to cars valued in the millions and the hottest hot rods, the show never ceases to amaze. It was quite a sight to see the Batmobile driving into the show. Yes, driven in! Behind it, a one of a kind Ls-9 powered ‘59 Vette that has raised the bar in hot rodding. The crowd was even more amazed when the cockpit of the Batmobile opens and Jeff Dunham, comedian and car guy, jumps out. Jeff was kind enough to not only share the Batmobile with us, but also answer all the questions and take pictures with the crowd. Thank you Jeff! The best part of Supercar Sunday is the people. The Seventh Annual LX Spring Festival that was started by the LXForums. This is an online community that specializes in Chrysler LX platform vehicles (Dodge Charger, Challenger, and Magnum, and Chrysler 300) and is a free show for owners to get together and show off what’s new in customizing and what everyone does with the “scheme” of their vehicles. It is limited to LX owners, but, they are a nice bunch, and let myself and a few others sneak in with our Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8’s. It’s so big people from around the world came and brought their cars with them! There were clubs from all over the great State of California that trekked out for it as well. It’s so popular with passionate Chrysler owners, that Chrysler and SRT themselves have been a part of the event for a few years now. They brought the SRT Track Experience and for $20 a lap on an autocross course, you could lap the 2012 Challenger SRT8, Charger SRT8, 300 SRT8, and even the Jeep SRT8. There was a drift course with none other than Samuel Hübinette, Chrysler’s factory drift racer, at the wheel of either a customized 2012 Charger SRT8, or his drift Challenger. Rides were $20 in one of the 3 seats in the Charger, and $100 for the passenger seat in the Challenger. Mr. Hübinette is a supremely capable driver and amazingly down to earth, taking pictures with anyone getting into or out of the cars for the ride. The event starts early, they request arriving by 9AM, and for some (like me), that means leaving at around 7. It’s ok though, there’s a small group of about 10-12 cars that decide to meet and caravan, so driving down the 405 with a bunch of other SRT’s was quite a sight and most traffic took notice of our proud caravan. Arriving at El Toro was a kaleidoscope of vehicles and colors. Getting in line for entrance was amazing to see how different all the cars looked, even though they are all on the same platform. Owners have taken to customizing and modifying these vehicles like the old days when cruising was legal! From paint, to wheels and tires, to air bags, lambo doors, lights, front end swaps, superchargers, lights, and all the awesome exhausts that are available for the Hemis… music to the ears! There were some clubs from Texas, Florida, and a lot of Canadian cars that journeyed to the event. Quite a few vendors showed up to the event, most notable being Chrysler/SRT, with their full range of vehicles proudly on display for everyone to see and sit in. They even introduced the new Challenger Rallye at the show. They had all the marketing people and engineers roaming the show, checking out all the vehicles, talking to owners, finding out what drives the hobby, and what we would like to see from them in the future. It is really amazing that Chrysler, almost on the brink of closure, is back, and back with such force. They are creating a lot of enthusiasm for Chrysler and SRT. They are showing the world that while down, they were not out. Look at all the new products, all the new SRT’s, especially the recently announced Viper. Ralph Gilles made a very heartfelt and brief speech to the crowd, ensuring that the resurgence was just beginning. The other notables were KillerGlass.com, which makes glass radiator hoses, and TD, the owner, was extremely enthusiastic about the crowd turnout. Whiteline suspension also made it out, showcasing their line of bushings and other components. All the vendors that made an appearance were very informative and open to talk about their products and some of the cars they had seen that they liked. All of the attendees were extremely open, very friendly, and down to earth. It was a very good day. An amazing group of people, with a common love for Chrysler’s, Dodge’s, Jeeps, and, of course SRT’s. Overall, I’d have to hand it to the LXForums crew, the SRT crew, and all the people who travelled near and far to make this event stand out inevery way. I will be returning next year, and many more to come!

The 2013 Nissan GT-R Experience at Laguna Seca

The email hits your inbox,“Be the First to Experience the 2013 Nissan GT-R”, I’d love to. Where? “Nissan invites you to take part in the 2013 GT-R Experience during a private debut at Laguna Seca Raceway.” Nissan GT-R? Laguna Seca? I’m so there… “Participate in a one day Skip Barber performance driving school using your own GT-R*…” Errrrr, full brakes. Didn’t you guys not get the memo? The guy with the first leased GT-R in the nation back in 2008 had to return the vehicle about a year ago in mid-2011. It was a sad day. Very sad. Mike Sage had to literally pry it from me. LAPD was almost called because I wouldn’t let go. I got over it eventually and went to the dark side (as far as Nissan is concerned), Porsche. Wait, was there an asterisk? What’s the asterisk about? Fine print time… “*A very limited number of prior year GT-R’s will be available for those guests who do not own a GT-R…” Hercules! Hercules! Hercules! We’re in business. Sometimes the fine print works out to your favor, like this time in fact. Like the only time it ever has. I speed through the reservation and find out a couple days later that I was one of the few accepted. About 40 of us actually and ¾ brought their own cars. Nissan would provide about 10 guys with 5 2012 GT-Rs to split. But I’m getting ahead of myself, as usual. So, a GT-R event. Where to go to get info? www.nagtroc.org, of course, the North American GT-R Owner’s Club. As those guys are always on top of all things GT-R, there was a thread already started. People already claiming they got in. One of the forum’s founders, MC, started previewing the event telling us we were in for the time of our lives. Nissan would not only provide cars to drive but in also customized Bell helmets we got to keep in addition to other swag like jackets, hats and bags. And they did. Again, getting ahead of myself. Not being able to sleep much leading up to the day of the event, I head over to Laguna Seca pretty early. Godzilla is all around. There are GT-Rs on Salinas Highway, scattered all about. I take the long drive in my Porsche to the track entrance and once I’m in, I’ve entered the GT-R Mecca. Visitor cars go left, (don’t get too close to the merch), GT-Rs, today’s MVP, go to the right, straight into the pits for owners that brought their own cars. I walk up to registration and, sure enough, the rumor rumblings were confirmed. Nissan was going all out on this. My customized helmet, jacket and hat were all there. Nissan finally was doing what the original GT-R owners were begging them to do back in 2008; build community by hosting events exactly like the one they were putting on today. Better late than never. The event itself was amazing. We had about four stations where we were able to break down the track and concentrate on mastering certain parts of it including the historic Corkscrew and Turn 2 which are both really crucial in mastering if you’re going to have any success on the track. We also got to participate in a timed autocross event in which yours truly somehow set the fastest stock car time of the day in. Thirty thousand weekend miles of ownership over three years came in handy for that event as I felt right at home in the cockpit of the GT-R. And the finale were the hot laps riding shotgun with professional Skip Barber instructors as they went balls out on the track. All in all, Nissan put on an amazing event devoted to an amazing car. Carl Phillips, heading of GT-R marketing in North America stated that it was Nissan’s goal to put more events like this together in hopes of showing people first-hand, how incredible the Nissan GT-R and specifically, the revised 2013 model is.
