Chairman’s Message
2020 marked the sixth anniversary of the Hong Kong Design Awards. We started this program to recognise leadership, excellence and courageous, design-lead projects in the commercial, government and community sectors. Each of the 2020 awarded projects took a different path in searching for the unmet needs of the stakeholders and users, but they are all undeniably made for people. The tumultuous nature of 2020 left the world scrambling to understand, adapt and respond to the ever-changing situation. ‘Normal’ was put on hold and we have had to universally strap in for an abnormal ride as we navigate through a new everyday. Market conditions entered a state of flux, and almost a year on that continues to be the case. In these moments of upheaval, it is the designers’ role to bring us to the future faster, and those that have shifted away from past concepts of normal, who have refactored their businesses to the current and future conditions and who remain adaptable, have provided

themselves with the greatest possible opportunities to thrive in this era of the New Possible. At DRIVENxDESIGN we too are evolving. 2020 was our 11th year of award programs, bringing a new focus for a new decade. Over the last eleven years we have pushed as hard as possible to build the world’s largest network of award programs - along the journey there has been a range of supporting tools and programs that have evolved. We are continuing to roll out more improvements to the DRIVENxDESIGN Portal to make it even easier for Award Managers to nominate and celebrate awarded projects and enhance the awards showcase. As of 2020, anything to do with the Award Programs stays under the DRIVENxDESIGN banner while everything else falls under the ‘Design Exec Club’ banner. The Award Programs are all about providing recognition for project teams, suppliers and those with the courage to sponsor.
Hong Kong Design Awards 2020
The Design Exec Club is about actionable strategic input for design focused executives. Our Supporter Program (p8) is designed to help suppliers and brands connect with the best of the best and gain invaluable connections with the emergent talent of our Elevate Program. The Design Exec Club is based on a dinner club I started in 2014 when touring through global design capitals. What began as an informal dinner conversation showed there was a glass ceiling for design conversations - it wasn’t punching through to the boardroom. Over the last 6 years, many of those dinner guests have been promoted to C-Suite positions and it proved high time to welcome in other C-Suite types to explore how design accelerates their organisational goals.
The members of the Design Exec Club are united by a common goal for a Better Future. It is all about how we can ensure the best possible future for our grandchildren’s grandchildren - yes, that’s right, five generations. Through both our DRIVENxDESIGN and Design Exec Club platforms we are proud to recognise the thought leadership that is going to create a thriving economy that is equitable and environmentally conscious. That is a Better Future, and we want to celebrate those with the courage, diversity and excellence to make it a reality. Again, congratulations, thank-you for being a part of our vision, and keep maintaining your courageous stance.

With the aim of perpetuating those desires, we were tasked to create a destination island resort that evokes all the grit and romance of those youthful adventurers yet transports the experience fully into the 21st century by providing unrivalled comfort, luxury and amenity.

Farrells was commissioned to design the Shanghai Shipyard masterplan and architectural design where the construction of the project was recently completed. The masterplan design vision was to create a lively, vibrant, and iconic destination as an extension and ‘last jigsaw piece’ of Pudong district, complementing the nearby Central Business District of Pudong. The project comprises two grade-A office towers and several high-end retail pavilions which are strategically placed in the wider masterplan context as urban markers that lead people towards the waterfront. The office towers are positioned offset from each other and act as a gateway into the retail extent of LuJiaZui Harbour City with low-level podium and shopping ‘villas’ framing either side of the retail avenue that takes people towards the old factory region to the north. Bean Buro was tasked to design “An Agile Workplace Driven by Food Tasting”. The project is a unique workspace for Jardine Restaurant Group, one of the leading restaurant groups in Asia, in a 22,000sqft (2,040sqm) space across two floors in an office tower in Whampoa Hong Kong. A prominently coloured stairwell connects all the dynamic front of house spaces, including the food demo kitchen, tasting room, filming events, and altogether stimulates a highly sociable workplace for the company. The colour scheme was inspired by the company’s restaurants heritage. Still, it is in conjunction with other colourful highlights that represent a sense of new opportunities in the company’s exciting development. A fresh ruby colour is primarily used around the stairwell, while colour accents of blue, red and green hues are subtly used on floor carpet, fabrics, lattice frames, and acoustic baffles. The design of this project should pay more attention to clear primary and secondary, and follow the functional requirements. Designers transform office space into art space, and at the same time adds modern humanistic elements to shape the unique temperament of the office. They divide the space into different areas, which not only meets the needs of teamwork and focus, but also relaxes the nervous brain. In addition, the soft tones give rise to infinite reverie in space, making people in the space have different experiences.

EVA is a striking piece of aquaponic/hydroponic furniture inspired by the symbiosis of nature. Waste from fish in the tank moulded into the pillar supporting EVA is pumped up into the above root system of the garden, providing nutrients for the hydroponically lit plants, who break down the ammonia rich waste into nitrates which in return feeds the fish, thus completing the symbiotic relationship.

Sustainable Family Garden Project Commissioner/Creator Chaozhi Lin
The Sustainable Family Garden is an household garden solution for the problem of food wastage in the home.
According to a report by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), of the 1.3 billion tons of food wasted in 2019, China wasted 117 million tons. Traditional food waste in China is incinerated into combustible waste. Food waste accounts for 46.2% of combustible waste, but produces 0.3 tons of carcinogenic gas and a large amount of carbon dioxide per ton. However, for every ton of waste buried, 1 cubic meter of land is wasted, and large amounts of toxic gases, such as formaldehyde, are generated during kitchen waste storage and transportation at home. Our goal is to ban food from entering the landfill. .

Shake Ointment Packaging Project Commissioner China Resources Sanjiu Medical & Pharmaceutical Creator Zhang Jian Design Studio
Hong Kong Design Awards 2020
Zhang Jian Design Studio solve an age old problem with the simple, yet ingenious addition of a tab on the end of an otherwise ointment tube. Generally, after using a tube of ointment for a period of time, the remaining ointment will be concentrated in the middle and lower part of the tube. So it often needs to shake the tube to move the ointment to the front. This design extends an obvious semi-circular sign at the end of the tube. The flat, thumb-like shape is the most suitable place to pinch when shaking the tube. The design of this sign makes ointment shaking more smoothly.

Ascend 3D Printing Truck Project Commissioner/Creator Nathan Zabarsky - Cleveland Institute of Art
Hong Kong Design Awards 2020
Ascend is a construction vehicle designed to re-imagine how large-scale architecture is built. It uses a 3D printing style approach to construct skyscrapers layer by layer. The unique 3-box design allows the components that make up concrete— gravel, sand, and cement—to be mixed with the water from the truck’s hydrogen fuel cell power plant, then be extruded. The truck is modular, so a transport version takes a container full of the raw materials from the quarry to the construction site where they can be hoisted up to a second truck to be mixed and extruded as the truck “prints” the building.

Leaving your toothbrush on the bathroom counter exposes it to new bacteria which may end up in your mouth the next time you’ll be using your toothbrush. The bloom is built to carry up to four toothbrushes or two power brush along with a shaver and an LCD screen with working info. This option is great for the whole family because it can clean multiple toothbrushes at once. The bloom is also inspired by the classic “Bankers” Desk or table lamp with cure shape and “obsession” manual sterilize pull switch. That will easily fit into modern interior design and come with the best user experience.

The Brook’s Clown is a luxurious 72-page tome where two clowns - Gramblanc (Jean LambertWild) and Hatoff (Marc Goldberg) - traipse across Singapore, and their goofy dalliances and antics are captured behind the backdrop of iconic places such as Haw Par Villa and Little India that our Little Red Dot is renowned for. These comedic scenes could not have materialised without the art direction of Ler Jiyuan, while the leading figure in the local contemporary comics scene, Koh Hong Teng, ensured each page would be engaging from start to end.

Clowns. Some individuals are attracted to them, not just for their comical sense but their artistic articulation, funny body contortions and extravagant outfits. Perhaps it’s how we often take life so seriously and clowns are a means of shedding our sterile/straitlaced lives to live vicariously, is a means of distraction from the hustle and bustle of urban living. The book’s beautiful layouts are a sight to behold: the professionally photographed clowns appear in cartoon-like grids, complemented by speech bubbles and tasteful graphical elements to make it a pageturning experience for curious eyes, die-hard comic fans, open-minded individuals, and for those who crave off-beat humour.
