Greetings from Makia!
About Makia. We grew up snowboarding, skateboarding and playing ice hockey. A little over a decade ago, over beers, we founded Makia as a platform to start making clothes we’d want to wear ourselves. Our criteria, that we could wear the end product with our backs straight and that it would stand the test of time. Today, we’re still hard at work with those same initial goals in mind. Constantly raising the bar for ourselves, in a never-ending quest to provide you with an ultimate collection of everyday clothes. This is as far as we’ve come. Our clothes are being sold in 25 countries around the world to new friends and likeminded people. Some of the biggest compliments we’ve been told, is that we give a spark of hope to the family men out there. We certainly try. For now, enjoy.
For years we have traveled the world in search of new friends and adventures. While having shot our catalogues everywhere from Alaska to Australia, the Makia images have featured people from legendary musicians to boarding godfathers, industry heavyweights and local spin doctors. Something that we’ve become known for and that we are extremely proud of. This time around, we wanted to flip things around and have our friends from abroad experience our little corner of the earth that we call home. Invited were Eric Dressen, Huub Smit, Maximilien N’Tary-Calaffard, Timo Järvinen, Eric Conyers, Lionel Vivier, Rip Zinger, Gustavs Terzens, Jonas Strømberg, Jonathan Wood, Thomas Marecki and Giacomo Margutti. All from different countries, old and newer acquaintances. The visits happened in smaller groups during one month, so we could really share the magic of the destinations we visited. On the list, were places and local practices close to our hearts.

Having grown up in a land of a thousand lakes and being surrounded by the ocean, it’s unlikely not to have held a fishing rod at some point of your life. For the finns, fishing is an activity pursued even during the coldest winter months by drilling holes through the ice and especially close to our head designer Jesse Hyväri’s heart, who is even rumoured to go fishing on his lunch breaks. Sometimes the fisherman’s luck is missing and although on this day we were out at dawn, it was not on our side. 6

As soon as the Finnish kids learn to stand on their feet, they’re put on ice skates. With a religion like status, ice hockey is the biggest sport in our nation and not to be taken light hearted. Half of our office are hockey fanatics, so there was no way we were gonna have our guests experience Finland without putting some ice skates on. Five time Stanley Cup champion Esa Tikkanen was nice enough to give the boys some pointers, on how to get under the opponents skin. 16

Island hopping is a natural thing for people along the coast. It’s easy to escape the fast pace of the city by hopping on one of the many ferry lines that run along the coast. During the winters, the islands are accessible with skis or by walking. Some have restaurants or old lighthouses that make for great places to visit. Gustavsvärn, an old lighthouse off the southern tip of Finland, was surrounded by the English and bombed by the Russians during it’s history. It’s remains made a perfect setting for us as a photo shoot and over night location. 20

Finns love their summer cottages. During the holidays, the city streets empty up as people swarm to the comforts of their cottages in hopes of recharging their batteries. Sauna, beer and sausages are on the regular to-do-list on a typical weekend getaway. When in need of a break from the hectic office hours, we too head out to the woods for a day or two. There’s nothing quite like sitting deep in the forest and listening to the flames of a bonfire, so on each of our trips, we made sure to stay at least one night in a cabin. 56

Icebreakers are a familiar sight for Helsinki’s inhabitants, as they stand tall in the port of downtown. However, during the cold winter months when the sea freezes over, these guys are vital for keeping the waterways open for commercial and public sea transportation. The ships can stay offshore for long periods at a time and travel as far as the Bering sea, so the crew needs to have essential necessities, like the sauna, on board. Saunas are close to our hearts and can be found everywhere from small one room apartments to our offices. So, besides getting a lecture on how to break some polar ice, we got a once in a lifetime chance to break some sweat in an icebreaker sauna! 102

Ok, so where do I start. It’s been a crazy few days here in Finland and my first time in Scandinavia certainly didn’t disappoint. Wood cabins, saunas, swimming in icy lakes, ice hockey, horse racing and of course plenty of Jaloviina. It seems a real shame to be heading home, but I’m certainly coming back. Dear friends of Makia Clothing. It’s been really good to stand on the other side of the lens/tripod for once. Different but pretty interesting. Thanks for the good times we’ve had in only 3 days. It felt like 3 months, in a good sense. Oh, you got it. Camper van in the middle of nowhere. Horse betting. Ice hockey. Karaoke. Photo shoots. Other random stuff and all these things in just 3 days. I’m definitely done, in the red sense of the word. Things I also loved: 1. My hotel room’s bathroom has a TV screen, so you can take a shit while watching a TV screen. 2. Finnish girls are real. I received a call from Finland. Landed in Helsinki 72hrs later. Been lured with a luxury hotel for 1 night then been driven to a lighthouse on a deserted island sharing a sauna with a bunch of naked men. It was one of the most amazing experiences in my life.
