Savannah Droughtmaster Charity Heifer
SAVANNAH DROUGHTMASTERS CHARITY HEIFER
VALMAI AND STEPHEN JONES of Savannah Droughtmaster Stud, Renner Springs Station, Northern Territory, were left wondering what to do when after a destocking muster of young cattle, they found a single young steer left in the drought-stricken paddock at Renner Springs Station in 2019. It was March, on the back of no wet season and over 750,000 head of cattle had already been destocked from the Barkly Tablelands in the Northern Territory. This was the worst drought in over 3 decades. So, the idea of gifting the steer to charity was born. The steer was first auctioned for Blazaid via Landmark in Alice Springs. After being bought and donated back, sold several times, he raised around $8000 for several charities. Covid prevented the auction from going ahead in 2020 and then Herbie of Elders (Alice Springs) took over the charity auction and a heifer was auctioned for $5000 last year. Ecstatic about how it went we made the decision to keep it going and try to help a different charity auction each year. We are delighted to report that this year Savannah Hope was auctioned at the Alice Springs Show & Sale and was purchased by the Hayes Family, The Garden Station, with Drought Angels and Centralian Beef Breeders each receiving 50% of the money raised from the auction.
