The CDC recently released an estimate based on insurance records that suggests that approximately 476,000 Americans are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease annually. The increase in Lyme disease diagnoses in the United States is undeniable, and there is very little being done to prevent new infections.

Phase 1 Acute Infection

UNDERSTANDING LYME

Lyme disease can begin with flu-like symptoms. The bulls-eye skin rash commonly accepted as the "tell-tale" sign of Lyme is often absent.

Patients may not experience early symptoms or fail to remember the initial incident causing their chronic, debilitating, and often misdiagnosed illness.

HOW TO IDENTIFY A TICK BITE

Ticks or other vectors (disease-carrying organisms) can leave recognizable symptoms in their path. Try to collect anything attached to your skin for lab testing and look for these five concerns at the point of contact. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Seek medical intervention immediately if you've been bitten for the best chance to prevent chronic systemic infection.

Phase 3 Autoimmune Lyme

WHEN YOUR BODY ATTACKS ITSELF

When Lyme hides in the cells, tissues, and organs, it is undetectable by the immune system. The "killer" side of the immune system (Th1) is designed to seek out pathogens and destroy them. When it cannot find the hidden Lyme, the B-cell (Th2) response fires to create antibodies to "tag" the bacteria to make them easier to recognize by the killer (Th1) cells. After months of teetering back and forth from a Th1–Th2 reaction, the B-cells create antibodies against your own cells. This immune response dysfunction results in autoimmune disease and makes Phase 3 Lyme potentially life-threatening.

NEUROLOGICAL LYME DISEASE

Late Phase 2 and Phase 3 Lyme are commonly associated with neurological symptoms referred to as "neuro-Lyme." Many patients suffer from brain inflammation and spirochete infiltration across the blood-brain barrier. Working with a Lyme-literate practitioner is necessary for remission or recovery.
