The Lymphatic System?

Whyisthelymphaticsystemso importantandwhatdoesitdo?

The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs, including lymph nodes, the spleen, tonsils, and lymphatic vessels, that help rid the body of toxins, waste, and other unwanted materials. Its main role is to transport lymph; a fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells, throughout the body. This helps keep your immune system in tip-top shape, ready to defend you against any invaders!

Not only does it play a crucial role in your immune response, but it also helps with absorbing fats from your diet and transporting them into your bloodstream Along with transporting progesterone throughout your body. Cool right?

Now, here’s the quirky part: your lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump! It drains and moves with the rhythm of muscular contractions. This means every time you stretch, walk, or even do a little shimmy, you're helping your lymph flow smoothly. That means living a sedentary lifestyle is problematic to your lymphatic system. Now it’s not just about avoiding being sedentary; certain things like ditching conventional dairy, rethinking tight clothing choices (ex underwire bra’s), and even being mindful of our tech environments can keep your lymph fluid moving and draining.

WhyshouldIcareabout thelymphaticsystem

When the lymphatic system goes unchecked and stops efficiently clearing waste products from our cells, safe and effective detoxification becomes impossible. When this happens your body is no longer removing waste and toxins, but rather accumulating (storing) them This leads to cellular damage, paving the way for various symptoms and illnesses to take root. Unfortunately most practitioners never even consider the lymphatics role in their clients health struggles.

All of your lymphatic fluid eventually makes its way to the subclavian veins, situated just above your collarbones. From here on, let's call this crucial area the Termini.

The right subclavian vein is responsible for draining your head, neck, right arm, and right breast & back Meanwhile, the left subclavian vein takes on the hefty job of draining the rest of our body.

Once the lymphatic fluid reaches the subclavian veins, it's returned to the circulatory system which helps maintain fluid level within the body.

Not clearing the termini first. This is where all of your lymphatic fluid drains So if your termini are clogged nothing will drain

Lots of providers are teaching to work furthest away from the termini (ex. ankles) and work towards your heart. This is like trying to move the car at the back of a traffic jam first. That just doesn’t work! Always start at the termini and move to the next closest node or area. That way the lymphatic fluid has space to move (ie drain) and it doesn't cause further congestion to occur.

1. Fever, acute infection, early onset inflammatory disease. You need to wait until the acute phase is over and the fever is broken.

2. Circulatory system problems, especially thrombosis or if there is any risk of embolism or phlebitis

3. Cardiac issues such as heart disease, acute angina pectoris or coronary thrombosis (heart attack). Using LDM increases the fluid load to the heart.

4. Active bleeding, internal or external.

5. Active malignant cancers, undiagnosed lumps, or tumors that haven't been looked at by your physician.

6. High risk pregnancy or late term pregnancy with complications, first trimester.

7. Renal failure (because of the increased fluid)

8. Atherosclerosis or Aortic aneurysm or recent abdominal surgery

9. Asthma because of the potential to stimulate the vagal nerve and bring on an attack

These conditions do not mean you cannot do lymphatic drainage, just that you should consult with your primary to see if it's right for you.
