MIRKO BELJANSKI’S LIFE AND LEGACY

Mirko Beljanski, PhD, (1923-1998), biochemist and biologist, spent his professional career at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, studying the mechanisms of gene activation, cell division and tissue development in both normal and malignant states.

His book "The Regulation of DNA Replication and Transcription", published in 1983 and reissued in 2013, is devoted to this critical subject.

Dr. Beljanski discovered a change in the conformation of a cell's DNA when in the presence of carcinogens, pollutants or other harmful molecules. He showed that the DNA of a cancer cell becomes unwound or destabilized. From these results Dr. Beljanski invented the Oncotest, which allowed him to identify the carcinogenic potential of different molecules often present in our everyday life.

Mirko Beljanski’s discovery of the destabilizing role of environmental toxins to the DNA - that is to say at the very core of our cells - is central to understanding pathogenesis, and key to empowering all of us.

This key discovery, which has since been independently confirmed, remains the main reason why Dr. Beljanski is now often referred to as the “Father of Environmental Medicine”.

Dr. Beljanski went on to develop natural extracts (Pao pereira, Rauwolfia vomitoria, Golden Leaf of Ginkgo biloba and some RNA fragments) which have been extremely effective at supporting his patients against a variety of ailments.

Beljanski's extensive knowledge of biological mechanisms, along with his freedom from any hampering relationship with industrial interests, led him to define a multi-pronged approach to wellness and to develop products free of side effects, easy to administer and taken as nutritional supplements.

AN INJUSTICE RECOGNIZED BY THE EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS

François Mitterand (1916 - 1996)

In 1992, Dr. Beljanski was called upon by former French president François Mitterrand to help treat his prostate cancer. The extracts allowed the President to reach his second term in office.

But upon Mitterrand’s death in 1996, Beljanski became the subject of relentless persecution aimed at wiping out the information that natural substances could be effective.

He and his wife were arrested, all the extracts were seized and Beljanski was forbidden to publish further research.

Beljanski passed away in Paris in 1998, without a trial date ever set by the French judge and the opportunity to clear his name.

In 2002, four years after Beljanski’s passing, The European Court of Human Rights recognized in a unanimous decision - Beljanski vs. France - that France had no excuse for the numerous delays denying Beljanski his day in court and had violated his basic human rights.

Mirko Beljanski left behind a body of 133 peer-reviewed papers, 2 books and 11 patents. Mirko Beljanski used to say, “When we have the power to help, we have the duty of doing so.”

ABOUT THE BELJANSKI FOUNDATION

The Beljanski Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in New York City. The overall mission of The Beljanski Foundation is to study and share knowledge of effective non-toxic, natural solutions that work both alone and in synergy with traditional western medicine. These values, at the very core of integrative medicine, are the legacy of Mirko Beljanski, PhD (1923-1998), a French biologist who uncovered the link between environmental toxins and carcinogenesis when he was working at the Pasteur Institute in Paris.

The Foundation raises money to fund research conducted at reputable academic institutions using natural compounds, rather than synthetic molecules. To that end, we hold an annual fundraiser every year called Angels and Champions for Cancer Research and throughout the year we host Healthy Tuesdays (a series of monthly events created to build a community focused on increasing knowledge of holistic health and integrative medicine). In 2020 we launched Virtual Healthy Tuesdays from New York City and Virtual Healthy Thursdays in France from New York City.

THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER MUST

BE DEVELOPED ON THREE DIFFERENT FRONTS:

A three pronged approach to Cancer.

1. Stop the multiplication of cancer cells without harming normal cells, which implies the availability of selective anti-cancer substances, tested thanks to the Oncotest.

2. Protect the immune system and restore the body's defenses, because the products and ionizing radiations used in conventional anti-cancer therapies destroy these much-needed immune cells.

3. Balance the enzymes whose activity is disturbed by the disease or the toxicity of conventional treatments.

It is generally believed that the difference between normal DNA and DNA from cancer cells is due to mutations, i.e., alterations in the primary structure of the DNA. This theory is still widely held.

However, Mirko Beljanski has shown that the permanent and fundamental difference between the DNA of healthy cells and cancer cells is essentially in the secondary structure: the double helix of cancer DNA is permanently relaxed over larger or smaller areas, whereas in normal DNA this relaxation occurs only locally and temporarily to allow DNA replication or gene expression.

THE ONCOTEST

Dr. Mirko Beljanski went on to develop a test in order to evaluate the carcinogenic potential of a given molecule. This test is based on the comparison of in vitro replication of healthy and cancerous DNA from the same type of organ in the presence of the test compound.

What is the Oncotest?

Products known to have carcinogenic activity significantly increase cancer DNA replication in the Oncotest. There is a perfect correlation between the increase in chronicity of cancer cell DNA, its matrix capacity and the speed of cancer cell multiplication. Molecules that destabilize cancerous DNA and increase its synthesis without having the same effect on healthy DNA have carcinogenic potential. This is the principle of the Oncotest.

What does the Oncotest measure?

The Oncotest measures the radioactive DNA synthesized by the DNA-dependent DNA polymerase in the presence of either normal or cancerous template DNA. This biochemical test is simple in principle and application.

How are results defined?

Results can be obtained in two to three hours and substances can be sorted into 4 categories:

1. Substances well known for their carcinogenic properties effectively stimulate DNA replication in cancerous DNA but have little effect on a corresponding DNA from healthy tissue. This test confirms that at low doses, chemical antimitotics have carcinogenic potential.

2. This test also shows that many substances may rightfully be considered safe to DNA.

3. The Oncotest can also determine whether a molecule is toxic to the DNA synthesis reaction. For example, molecules that disable DNA polymerase and thus prevent DNA synthesis in reactions with both cancer and healthy DNA templates.

4. The last category is where molecules can selectively inhibit cancer DNA synthesis with no effect on healthy DNA. Could he find such a perfectly selective molecule? Beljanski reasoned that if nature had created carcinogens it also had surely created anti-carcinogens. Nature responded generously to his quest.

His research led him to discover two plant extracts containing such molecules: Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria.

BELJANSKI'S EXTRACTS AT A GLANCE

Dr. Beljanski’s multifocal therapy, developed in concert with years of study on plants and animals, laid the groundwork for the extracts. In addition to all the studies described in this eBook, further studies in toxicology, mutagenesis and clastogenesis (breaking of chromosomes) gave the researcher the assurance he needed to develop these specific extracts.

The extracts developed by Mirko Beljanski work at the DNA level; therefore, they are not gender or organ specific and are used in various applications.

SPECIFIC ANTICANCER ACTIVITIES

Pao pereira (Geissospermum vellosii): While working at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, Mirko Beljanski was the first to investigate the anticancer activity of Pao pereira as an extract that would be effective against cancer cells, but not penetrate healthy cells. Beljanski tested his Pao pereira extract on different cancer cell lines and published the results:

Percentage of cancer cells killed in vitro in 48 hours by 100 μg/ml Pao pereira Beljanski® extract (from Genetics and Molecular Biology, 23, I, pp. 29-33, 2000).

Rauwolfia vomitoria: Dr. Beljanski perfected an extract standardized in alstonine, but devoid of reserpine. Beljanski noted that once reserpine was removed from the Rauwolfia vomitoria extract, the extract had a selective effect against cancer cells with very low toxicity and no effect on hypertension.

Golden Leaf of Ginkgo biloba: Some highly beneficial aspects of this extract include regulation of nucleases (pathology and chemotherapy change a cell's nucleases quantitatively and qualitatively); protection from side effects of gamma radiation (powerful protective element against various side effects including fibrosis), the protection of chromosomes; and a positive effect on the liver.

RNA fragments: RNA fragments stimulate the formation of white blood cells and platelets. Mirko Beljanski discovered that they not only help maintain normal white blood cell and platelet levels, - which may decrease to dangerously low levels in several situations including radiation therapy and chemotherapy - but they also preserve normal proportions among the various kinds of white blood cells, notably those that fight infections.

CURRENT RESEARCH PROGRAM – MELANOMA

The new experiments are focused on melanoma, and more specifically, the potential beneficial effects of the golden leaf Ginkgo extract for an anti-melanoma effect.

Why Melanoma?

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer, and melanoma cases are on the rise. Risk factors are exposure to sunlight, weakened immunity and age. When it’s not caught early, melanoma is deadly. Conventional treatments include surgery, followed by immunotherapy or chemotherapy, each of which may have limited success and are also associated with negative side effects. An alternative therapeutic approach to melanoma free of toxicity and side effects is needed now.

How can extracts from nature slow melanoma progression?

We know from Mirko Beljanski’s work that melanomas over express and release enzymes called ribonucleases (RNAases) that are normally involved in processing large RNA molecules into smaller fragments with different functions. The RNAases are secreted by melanomas and circulate in the bloodstream. Beljanski speculated that the secretion of abnormally high levels of these enzymes from melanomas was a marker of their cancer pathology. He went on to show that the golden leaf Ginkgo extract suppresses the activity of the secreted RNAases.*

There are a total of 15 different RNAses that could be targeted by the extract, but there is one enzyme of particular interest called angiogenin because it can play a role in melanoma cancer progression by inducing blood supply that enables melanoma growth and advance.

Where are we in the research and how can you help us?

Two plant extracts, green tea extract blend (OnkoTea®) and Golden Leaf of Ginkgo Biloba (Ginkgo V®), are being studied for their anti-melanoma activity.

Phase 1: Completed: Green Tea

CURRENT RESEARCH PROGRAM – MELANOMA

The anti-cancer effects of a special blend of green teas selected by Dr. Mirko Beljanski are shown in a recent publication from Kansas University Medical Center. Several cancer cell lines were studied, including four different lines of melanoma cells, but also bladder and breast, including metastatic breast cancer.

Phase 2: Completed: Golden Ginkgo extract inhibits activity of RNAase enzymes released by melanoma cells

Our new study is with Ginkgo extracts prepared from golden leaves, provided by Maison Beljanski. We are investigating the extract’s effect on the activity of secreted ribonucleases.

For this new study, we examined whether melanoma cells secrete or contain more ribonuclease than normal skin cells (fibroblasts). Researchers at Kansas University Medical Center looked at the action of the golden leaf extract provided by Maison Beljanski on ribonucleases in these cells and conclude that the extract can indeed inhibit RNAase activity.

Phase 3: - Needs your support - Does Golden Ginkgo specifically inhibit angiogenesis?

Suppressing angiogenin activity is not a direct cytotoxic effect on cancer cells like the induction of apoptosis by Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria; rather it could limit tumor growth by denying sustenance. This means that the Ginkgo extract could be used in combination with the two anticancer plant extracts to provide a triple threat to melanoma: direct killing of the cancer cells by Pao and Rauwolfia and denying the tumor’s lifeblood by Ginkgo. Animal studies will be useful to demonstrate this prospective synergy.

When Beljanski discovered the inhibitory effect of the Ginkgo extract on RNAases, it was in the context of skin fibrosis. He found that skin exposed to radiation (e.g. radiotherapy) undergoes fibrosis accompanied by release of RNAase enzymes. He also found these enzymes are released by melanomas as well as breast and pancreatic cancers and leukemia. Recent studies have expanded the list of cancers that secrete these enzymes. So, if our experiments prove that the golden leaf Ginkgo extract is effective against angiogenin from melanoma, it is likely to be useful for inhibiting blood supply and limiting growth of numerous additional cancers by this mechanism.

This activity of the golden leaf Ginkgo extract could be a breakthrough in cancer therapy providing non-toxic inhibition of vascularization of many kinds of tumors.

NOTES FROM CHRISTIAN MARCOWITH, M.D.

Christian Marcowith, M.D.

Christian Marcowith, MD, was a well-regarded family doctor who maintained his practice in a little village in Burgundy, France. Curious and open minded, he was always on the lookout for the best solutions for his patients. When Dr. Marcowith met Mirko Beljanski, PhD, the two started a conversation that continued until Marcowith’s passing in 1996.

In a notebook assigned for the use of Dr. Beljanski, Dr. Marcowith suggested dosage amounts for each of Beljanski’s discoveries, as well as treatment details that he found effective. The information is invaluable for physicians prescribing Beljanski’s extracts for patients suffering from any form of cancer or from other degenerative diseases such as hepatitis, herpes, HIV, prostatitis and many more.

Ms. Marcowith has generously bequeathed to The Beljanski Foundation all rights to her husband’s notebooks. Dr. Marcowith’s notes have been translated and reproduced here, with The Beljanski Foundation’s permission.

"There are two main anticancer botanicals: Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria. Both kill cancer cells and only cancer cells. They have no toxic effect on the individual. They are taken orally, if possible, they should be swallowed several times throughout the day with meals. As they do not have the same target in the cell, taking them together doubles the individual’s chance of destroying cancer cells.

Both can be used alone as a preventative measure or as a treatment; however, it is important to understand that these two products work in synergy with conventional treatments, meaning that each one maintains its individual mode of action, but the therapeutic effects are compounded.

Pao pereira fights cancer cells with no side effects. It can be used either as a treatment or as a preventative measure. In addition, the alkaloid in this herb can cross the blood-brain barrier which makes it possible to add it to any treatment protocol for brain cancers and certain viruses. Still, in the latter cases the dose of Pao pereira must be increased since only a small fraction of the product crosses the meningeal barrier.

Other than its anticancer activity, Pao pereira is a strong inhibitor of viruses, including viruses with RNA genomes (such as influenza, HIV, FEV (feline), hepatitis C, etc.) as well as DNA genome viruses (such as hepatitis A and B and herpes). Pao pereira’s effectiveness is not affected by hormones.

Rauwolfia vomitoria also fights cancer but with a special affinity for hormonallydependent tissues, including the breast, prostate, testes, thyroid, uterus, ovaries, cervix, etc. Thus, this remedy is very desirable if the organ affected is hormonallydependent. Rauwolfia vomitoria can be taken to combat the negative effects of menopause, or as a preventative measure in the case of suspicion or risk of a particular pathology. Rauwolfia vomitoria does not have any anti-viral effect and does not cross the blood-brain barrier.

RNA fragments from Escherichia coli K-12 bacteria do not work as an anticancer agent or as an antiviral agent. Instead, the small fragments of RNA, from Escherichia coli K-12, are used to stimulate the generation of immune cells and platelets (thrombocytes), which helps patients to better protect themselves from infection. In a situation where conventional cytotoxic therapies (chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery) have been received, the RNA fragments protect the patients’ physiology from the harsh effects of these treatments.

In older people, natural immunity tends to diminish, so the ingestion of one dose per week of small RNA fragments is advised as a preventative measure. One dose is also advised for those people undergoing diagnostic X-ray examinations, vaccinations, etc., which can suppress the immune system.

For many autoimmune diseases, there is immunological disorder; therefore, ingesting a few doses of E. coli RNA fragments can be quite beneficial. These RNA fragments are taken orally and should be dissolved or melted in the mouth without water. Avoid the use of benzodiazepines when taking RNA fragments.

Beljanski’s Ginkgo biloba is unlike any other conventional Ginkgo biloba extract, and so is its application. Beljanski’s unique Ginkgo biloba extract is made exclusively out of golden leaves subjected to a very specific extraction process. Beljanski’s Ginkgo extract is highly recommended for anyone undergoing anticancer treatment because disease coupled with conventional treatments works to disrupt normal protein functioning, which poses a danger for the patient.
