What is Nexavar?

Nexavar (sorafenib) is a cancer medication that interferes with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body. Nexavar is used to treat liver cancer, thyroid cancer, or a type of kidney cancer called advanced renal cell carcinoma.

How Nexavar Is Given:   

As tablets by mouth.

It is recommended that tablets are taken without food (at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating).

The amount of Nexavar that you will receive depends on many factors. Your doctor will determine your exact dosage and schedule.

How should I take Nexavar?

Nexavar is usually taken 2 times per day. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Take Nexavar on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating.

Do not crush, chew, or break a Nexavar tablet. Swallow it whole with water.

Your blood pressure will need to be checked often.

What should I avoid?

Body fluids should not be handled by a woman who is pregnant or who may become pregnant. Use condoms during sexual activity to avoid exposure to body fluids.

Nexavar Precautions:     

 

Stop using Nexavar and call your doctor at once if you have:         

mouth sores; blood in your urine or stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds; heavy menstrual periods, easy bruising, unusual bleeding, or any bleeding that will not stop; pale skin, feeling light-headed, rapid heart rate, trouble concentrating; dry cough, wheezing; chest pain and severe dizziness, fainting, sweating, swelling, rapid weight gain, feeling short of breath (even with mild exertion); rash, blisters, oozing, or severe pain in the palms of your hands or the soles of your feet; upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); sudden weight loss, increased appetite, trouble sleeping, increased bowel movements, feeling hot, feeling nervous or anxious, swelling in your neck (goiter);

 

dangerously high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision, buzzing in your ears, confusion, uneven heartbeats, seizure); or severe skin reaction -- fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.
