TITLE OF PROPOSED CHANGE: Instrumentation DESCRIPTION: Change section 4.6.1 to read: “By the word “Bugle” as used herein is any traditionally-defined brass instrument pitched in any key; whereas sound is produced by the vibration of the player’s lips in a tubular resonator.”
PURPOSE: (Why make this change-what are the benefits?) This change allows the entire brass choir and other exotic instruments to be included in our productions while opening up more color choices and potential effects to our overall sound.
EDUCATIONAL IMPACT: (How does this benefit the students educationally?) This is the area that motivated me to make this rules proposal. Passing this would allow the opportunity for all brass musicians to play on their major instrument. Trombone players could actually play a trombone if desired by the organization! CREATIVE IMPACT: (How does this affect the creative aspects of the activity? How does this affect designers/instructors?) It would allow more colors and effects to be featured in our musical repertoires. FISCAL IMPACT: (How does this financially affect individual corps and the DCI organization?) Financially each organization would be responsible for the purchase or procurement of the desired instrumentation that they would wish to pursue for their personal production.
AUDIENCE IMPACT: (How will this affect our audience and their perceptions of the activity?) This is the logical next step to complete the brass palette to be included in our productions. It will inspire new color and excitement to the shows. SHOW PROMOTER IMPACT: (How will this affect the show promoters-financially and logistically as it relates to contest production?) There will be no effect to the promoter either financially or logistically as it relates to the contest production.
LOGISTICS IMPACT: (How will this impact the operations of the individual drum corps and the DCI organization?) Depending on the choices of instrumentation, the corps making changes might have to adjust the configuration of their equipment truck.
JUDGING IMPACT: (How does this impact the adjudication process and individual judge?) Judging will have to embrace and evaluate the full brass choir as well as the potential of some exotic instruments. However, this does not necessitate any changes in our current judging processes.
