Hobbyists have been hard at work, judging by the haunted yards that have been popping up in the valley in preparation for Halloween night Friday, October 31. A small fire at the former Drumheller Hospital Tuesday afternoon is considered suspicious in nature. Drumheller RCMP and the Drumheller Fire Department were on scene at the former hospital Tuesday, October 28 investigating reports of smoke coming from the building. Emergency Services responded shortly after 4 p.m. to the structure in Riverside near the HillView Lodge. Fire Chief Bill Bachynski explained
there was a small fire ona chair in the upper floor of the building. However, because of the structure of the building, it had little fuel and burned out. There has been recent damage to the building including graffiti and smashed windows. It appears access could be gained though a broken window on the top floor. Police and firefighters swept the building for any other signs of fire and town crews arrived to secure the building.
Police are investigating another suspicious fire. This time at the World’s Littlest Church. The Drumheller Fire Department and RCMP responded shortly after 10 a.m. on Thursday. Staff at the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce called in the fire. Chamber manager Heather Bitz explains that twice a week, DARTS clients come out to clean the church, and Thursday morning called to let them know the Bible at the front of the church was smoldering. Bitz and Chamber services coordinator Marley Henneigh came out to investigate and found the book on fire. The Fire Department responded and put the fire out. It had damaged part of the interior of the church and firefighters had to cut a hole into the floor to make sure the fire was properly extinguished. The investigation continues.

Halloween Fun! Here is a fun Halloween appetizer you can whip up in minutes. All you need is a wheel of brie and some type of orange or red jelly or jam. I used red pepper jelly because I love the flavor combination with brie. Cut two triangles for eyes, one for a
nose and then rectangular shapes for the toothy grin. Microwave for 1 or more minutes, checking every 30 seconds depending on the power of your microwave. Brie can get away on you very quickly and run all over the plate! Serve this with crackers and have a safe and happy Halloween!
Downtown asks what you would like to see in the core Friends of Downtown Drumheller want input into how you see downtown in the future. Volunteers have posted two placards in the downtown core asking the simple question: How would you like to see downtown develop? Greentree students written in to collection of short stories Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller
Last year’s Grade 5 class at Greentree School have been immortalized in a children’s book. Last school year teacher Chris Connell introduced his Grade 5 Language Arts class to a series of short stories by Reg Down about Pinrut the Turnip Boy. Connell’s students were so enthralled with the stories, he decided to let the author know. This sat very well with Down, who, decided that in his next sto-
ry he would show his appreciation by writing Connell, the class and school into the tale.
This month the book was published and Down sent Connell and the school copies of the new book, one ofwhich is now in the Greentree School Library. The relationship did not end there. The class sent Down letters
of thanks and artwork. The author promptly then published the works to his website. The character Pinrut continued to flourish and Down again made contact with Connell asking permission to use Connell’s name in a book called the Nine Lives of Pinrut the Turnip Boy. This month the book was published and Down sent Connell and the school copies of the new book, one of which is now in the Greentree School Library.

The Atlas Coal Mine received a cheque for $10,000 Monday, October 27. Funds were provided through the province’s Community Initiatives Program (CIP) for technology upgrades at the mine museum. Atlas’ Executive Director Julia Fielding said the grant will help them make video recordings of miners’ stories, enable the mine to share these stories across Alberta and Canada, and
help the museum upgrade their website. Fielding said the Atlas will be working on the project over the winter. TIPS: • Wear a costume that fits properly and is short enough to safely walk in. • Reflective material on costumes helps motorists easily see children. • Carry a flashlight to help see and a cell phone for emergencies. • Never trick or treat alone - children should be accompanied by an adult, older sister or brother or other trusted adult. • Remind children before eating candy to have their parents check it. • Remind children not to enter a house or vehicle with someone they do not know. • Use the sidewalks and crosswalks for safety reasons, and remind children not to run out between parked cars. • Avoid alleys, dark parking areas or lots.

Drumheller Minor Soccer has just the cure. The have invited three comedians to give you that break to laugh. The Drumheller Minor Soccer Club’s annual fundraiser is coming up on November 29. They have a full evening of fun planned at the Badlands Community Facility. It includes a roast beef dinner, comedy from standup comedians Kevin Stood, Andrew Albert and Winston Spears, formerly of Comedy Inc. There will also be door prizes, a 50/50 and a silent auction. Following the comedians, they have brought in a DJ for attendees to dance the night away.
