A luncheon and official opening is scheduled for the beautiful new multipurpose courts at Drumheller Valley Secondary School. The lunch is a thankyou to all the donors, and anyone who contributed in any way, and will be held Friday, October 3, at 1 p.m. at the school to officially launch the new RCAF Athletic Park. The signs should be installed within the next week and finishing touches on the site are underway. “It’s total is $300,000 plus,” said Barb Travis, Friends of DVSS, said of the project total. Travis said the Town of Drumheller and staff contributed more than $100,000 as an in-kind donation of work, equipment and labour. Travis said without the

The Canadian Cancer Society has cancelled its fundraiser “Bark for Life” scheduled for Drumheller this Saturday, September 27. Spokeswoman Siobhan Doherty said the event was short on people, both volunteers and participants, so wasn’t able to go ahead. Doherty invites people who registered for the Drumheller Bark for Life to take part in the Chestemere event September 27, the Okotoks event on October 18, or join the Hanna Relay for Life this coming spring.

Bylaw officers have investigated several complaints in recent weeks regarding dog attacks. It is completely unlawful and unacceptable for a dog to charge and attack persons and dogs that walk by their house and property. If you have a fence, the dog must not be able to find a way out of it to escape and run free to attack anyone or their dog. People have every right to walk their dog on any town street. It is completely lawful for a dog to be on its own property as long as it stays on its own property. If a dog is not under physical constraint or does not obey verbal command to stay on its owner’s property then it is considered to be running at large and this is contrary to the Responsible Pet Owners bylaw. If a dog at large attacks and injures a person or other dog or animal this behavior is forbidden under the bylaw as well. Repeated offences, or a singular event of extremely serious nature by the same dog, will result in an investigation being conducted under the authority of the provincial Dangerous Dogs Act. Do your dog a favor and socialize it with other dogs when it is young. Reinforce this behavior in your dog and seek professional assistance if you feel it could help. It is the responsibility of the owner to see that the dog is under control at all times. This is a preventable issue. Reporting to the Supervisor of Aquatic Operations and Recreation Programs all staff are responsible for providing a safe, clean, professional and friendly environment to ensure that Pool patrons have a positive aquatic experience. Working smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a fire. That’s the message behind this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month!” Along with firefighters and safety advocates nationwide, Drumheller Fire Department is joining forces with the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) during Fire Prevention Week, October 5-11, to remind local residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home and testing them monthly. According to the latest NFPA research, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. “In a fire, seconds count,” said Bruce Wade Deputy Fire Chief. “Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out.” This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign includes the following smoke alarm messages: - Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. - Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do. - Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button. - Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they don’t respond properly. - Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it. The Drumheller Fire Department will be hosting activities and Meet your Emergency Services during Fire Prevention Week to promote “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives!” Through these educational, family-oriented activities, residents can learn more about the importance of working smoke alarms and testing them monthly. The museum’s annual Palaeo Arts contest is open for those from kindergarten to grade 12. Entrants are permitted one entry into the contest. “Each year we have a different specimen, fossil specimen, that students use for their inspiration or focus, and this year we’ve got a lambeosaurus skull,” said Earle Weibe, Head of Education at the Royal Tyrrell. Lambeosaurus fossils were discovered in Southern Alberta, notably Dinosaur Provincial Park, and Montana, said Weibe. It is a duck billed dinosaur, also known as a hadrosaur, that lived in the late cretaceous period 75 to 76 million

The students will then go through the muse-
um’s gallery of artistic displays, making observations and measurements, collecting data, then sorting through the data and analyzing it to come up with some conclusions. “It’s helping them learn and discover what palaeontologists do and how they go about their research, and how important collecting data is,” said Wiebe. The DinoMechanics classes can be scheduled during the lessbusy times for the museum, such as fall and early spring, and are scheduled to begin this fall.

A question of Father Flynn’s conduct is raised during a conversation between Sisters Aloysius and James, and the play centers around what happens from there. With the numerous reports published and broadcast of the sexual assault of children after the play’s opening in 2004, watching this play may seem a bit eerie at times, magnified while listening to some of Father Flynn’s arguments, and taking the audience through different emotions as they follow the interaction between the characters. One of those emotions may be sadness, when Lennette Randall’s Mrs. Muller speaks about her son, and his treatment at home, with Sister Aloysius. All of the actors portray very well the struggles of their characters in dealing with the information they receive and the choices they must make as a result, and perhaps leaving theatre patrons with more questions than answers at the play’s final scene. “Doubt: A Parable” runs until October 25 at Rosebud Theatre.

My grandpa was a trainer for 25 years with the Junior A team back home. He must be proud of you. He was. He passed away at the age of 98 about a year and a half ago. He had a story for everything. Are you a hockey player? No. I can’t stop on skates and I can’t skate backwards. What do you like to do in your downtime? I watch hockey and spend a lot of time staying in touch with people back home. Who is your favourite hockey team? The San Jose Sharks. Favourite dessert? My Mom’s apple crisp. Final thought? Notice of Application The Drumheller and District Solid Waste Management Association has applied to Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) to renew the Drumheller Municipal Landfill approval. The landfill is located in the SE and NE of 1/4 Sec. 36-28-20 W4M in the south eastern limit of the Town of Drumheller. The landfill is estimated to operate for 37 years and will be developed in stages through the construction of individual cells. It is estimated that the landfill will reach its capacity in 2051 approximately. On average the landfill accepts 30,500 tonnes of municipal waste per year. Waste types accepted at the landfill include: Municipal waste, demolition waste, Non-hazardous oilfield and industrial waste and drilling cement. The landfill also accepts white goods for recycling such as appliances, scrap metal, electronics, batteries, etc. Pursuant to section 73 of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, any person who is directly affected by this operation may submit a written statement of concern regarding this application. The Drumheller Valley Secondary School’s young men’s golf team travelled to Crossfield Thursday, September 18, to attend the South Central Zone Championships. The championship play consists of both team and individual competitions. In the team component, the DVSS golfers missed placing among the top three, but enjoyed playing a great day of golf. In individual play for the championship tournament, Zac Weiss shot a 75 and finished 3rd overall, earning him a bronze medal. The Drumheller Dragons are back on the winning side of the scoreboard after travelling to Calgary Tuesday night to defeat the Calgary Mustangs 5-4. The Mustangs opened the scoring at the ďŹ ve minute mark of the ďŹ rst period with a goal by Mason Mitchell. At 9:03 Calgary scored an unassisted, short handed goal by Vincent Pasquette but this was the last time the Mustangs took a lead in the game. Wyatt Noskey opened the scoring for the Dragons with the ďŹ rst of three-in-arow power play goals at 10:24. Hunter Mills scored the second at 12:14 with the third power play goal at 17:36 scored by Jacob SchoďŹ eld leaving the end of the ďŹ rst period score at 3-2 Dragons. Second period action saw two more goals by the Dragons. Noskey scored his second of the night at 1:55 and Tristan Thompson got the point for the Dragons ďŹ fth goal of the night at 14:56 bringing the score to 5-2 Dragons. The Mustangs didn’t waste any time in the third period scoring just nine seconds in with a goal by Josh Betinol,
to bring the score to 5-3 before Bryan Huck of the Mustangs scored the ďŹ nal goal of the game ending the score at 5-4 Dragons. The Dragons outshot the Mustangs 46 to 28 and took 3 power play goals of 12 opportunities where the Mustangs took 0 goals of 4 opportunities. Drumheller Dragons head coach Brian Curran said he thought Tuesday nights game was one of the teams better games out of the last three. “There was much better execution. We certainly picked up the transitional part of our game.â€? He said the kids played hard. “We made some mistakes for sure, but we battled back... It was good to see our power play was very good.â€? He said the team had been playing a bit fancy lately and they’ve gone back to basics of “just shooting and getting traďŹƒc to the net. Sometimes the old school stu works.â€? The Dragons will now travel to Spruce Grove for the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) Showcase taking place from September 25-27. The Dragons will ďŹ rst play the Spruce Grove Saints Thursday evening at 7 p.m. before a 1 p.m. Friday afternoon game against the Bonnyville Pontiacs.
