Mini wind chime Wind chimes are thought to have originated in Japan, where bamboo was used before metal was readily available.

5 Horio shaker This is a type of guiro, a mainstay of south American percussion but found on every continent. Originally made from hollow gourds, bones, wood or stone, they come in all shapes and sizes and some, like this, have beads or seeds inside too.

5 Squeezer shaker A modern Balinese invention that uses the small pieces of goatskin that are waste from the drum-making process. as with all shakers, hard beads or seeds move around inside a resonant container.

Simple shakers made from gourds or seed pods have been used in almost every culture. They’re particularly typical of north and south American and African traditions.

A style of drum with a distinctive “hour glass” shape, that is made and played all over west Africa and particularly in and around Mali. Bigger djembes are played with the hands but these small ones can be played with the fingers or with a rounded stick.

Originally from west Africa and made from gourds with seeds inside. A very popular and versatile instrument which in experienced hands can produce very complex rhythms.

Simple shakers using seeds or nuts are found all over the world. This one is made from the husks of the seeds of the Kenari tree that grows in Indonesia.
