Nursery Shaker Kit - Where it comes from Tambourine stick Animal tambourine Both are modern variations of a very old instrument, called the sistrum in ancient Egypt. Similar instruments have been found in Ethiopia and Mexico.

Text in this orange colour indicates that similar instruments can be found on every continent

Ocean drum This instrument is said to have originated in Nepal, far from the ocean. Its calming quality certainly fits with the Himalayan culture.

Bamboo basket From Bali, Indonesia, where the baskets are used for making offerings at the temple.

Squeezer shaker

Jingle Balls

Another recent invention and a product of the recycling age. There are always lots of small pieces of goatskin left over after making the big drums and so, to use them up, we started to make these squeezer shakers in Bali.

Simple shakers made from gourds or seed pods have been used in almost every culture. They’re particularly typical of north and south American and African traditions. These “jingle balls” use metal bells in place of seeds so the sound is rather different.

Mini bento shaker

Teenyweeny kenkeni This is a mini version of a type of dundun drum found in Mali and Guinea in west Africa. Similar double-headed drums are also found in Europe, the Balkans, India, China and Japan.

Made from the husks of the seeds of the Bento tree that grows in Indonesia. Similar shakers, using local seed husks can be found in almost every culture.
