What is it?

Considering blepharoplasty in Ft Myers, FL? Contact Audrey Farahmand, female board certi ed plastic surgeon. Eyelid surgery is also known as blepharoplasty. It corrects drooping upper eyelids and the pu y bags under the eyes.

It also helps smooth the ne lines of the upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty does not correct crow’s feet. It is a typical procedure, incisions are made following the natural lines of your eyelids; in the creases of your upper lids, and just below the lashes in the lower lids.

Working through these incisions, the skin is separated from underlying fatty tissue and muscle, excess fat is removed, and sagging skin and muscle are removed and tightened. The incisions are then closed with very fine sutures.

If you have a pocket of fat beneath your eyelids but do not need to have any skin removed, a transconjunctival blepharoplasty may be performed. In this procedure, the incision is made inside your lower eyelid leaving no visible scar. It is usually performed on younger patients with thicker, more elastic skin.

Procedure

The Consultation During your consultation, Dr. Farahmand will evaluate the elasticity of your eyelids and give you her opinion as to which procedure will best meet your goals. She will show you where incisions will be placed and she will discuss your anesthesia options.

The Pre- Op Appointment During your Pre-Op appointment, Dr. Farahmand will give you speci c instructions as to which medications to avoid before and after surgery.

She will also review with you your before and after instructions. Vital signs and photos will be taken. You will be able to ask the doctor any questions you have about your upcoming surgery. The staff will also provide you with a set of written instructions for before and after the surgery.

The Surgery Blepharoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure. It is usually performed with local anesthesia and twilight sedation. However, patients have the option to have it performed with just local anesthesia. The surgery is usually performed in under an hour.

Sutures are left in place for about one week.

Recovery

Dr. Farahmand advises patients to take it easy for a few weeks after blepharoplasty. This means no purposeful exercise or heavy lifting or performing house chores. Also, patients are advised not to bend over at the waist during this time (such as to pick something o the oor) as

this can increase the blood pressure in the head and eyes. Sutures are removed around one week post-operatively. Swelling and bruising last for around two weeks although traces can persist after that timeframe. It is not uncommon to have blurred vision, double vision, or sensitivity to sunlight in the rst two weeks after the surgery. These symptoms usually are gone after two weeks post-operatively.
