Otoplasty "Otoplasty" refers to reshaping the ears." Candidates for Otoplasty include any adult or child with prominent or misshaped ears. The most common reason for this procedure is to correct prominent or protruding ears. Prominent ears are a result of a variety of different anatomic configurations, however the two most common reasons ears are prominent are due to the lack of a anti-helical fold and over-sized cartilage. The general treatment considerations are to identify the source or reason for the prominence and then to treat the specific finding. In some cases it requires creation of the anti-helical fold while in other cases it requires setting the ear back closer to the head. In many cases, it requires both techniques. Best age in children? In children, the procedure is typically performed after the age of 5 or 6. In cases of severe deformity it can be done as early as 2, however these cases are rare. In cases in which minor deformities exist, the family may wish to wait until the child can participate in the decision at approx age 7-10. The rational for performing the procedure earlier as opposed to later in life is to reduce the chance of being teased or feeling insecure or embarrassed when the child starts school.

Surgical Technique An incision is placed in the crease behind the ear to gain access to the cartilage. Next sutures are used re-shape the ear and to set the ear back closer to the head. In some cases a piece of cartilage is removed. The sutures are typically absorbable and do not require removal. Any incision results in a scar but the incisions are placed so that they will be inconspicuous and hopefully almost invisible. The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes per ear.

Post-Operative Care A bulky dressing is placed on the head for a few days. The ears will be somewhat swollen for several days after the dressing is removed. A soft headband is worn at night to protect the ears. Typically, the patient can return to school or work in less than a week and full activity (including sports) in approximately 2 weeks.
