What is it?

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure which removes excess skin and fat from the lower and middle abdomen. Also during a tummy tuck, the abdominal muscles are tightened with permanent sutures and the belly button is repositioned.

The procedure can dramatically improve the contour of the abdomen. The scar is positioned just above the pubic hair and , depending on the extent of excess skin, may extend from hip to hip. This scar can be positioned so that it will be covered with a bathing suit. There is also an incision around the belly button which is repositioned during the surgery.

Procedure

The Consult During your initial consult for abdominoplasty, Dr. Farahmand will examine you to determine if you are a good candidate. In general, patients with loose abdominal skin , stretch marks, or loose abdominal muscles make good candidates for abdominoplasty. Dr. Farahmand will show you where your incision will be located. She will also determine if you would be a candidate for liposuctioning of the hips at the same time as the abdominoplasty. She will explain the recovery process and answer all of your questions about the procedure.

The Pre-op Appointment During your Pre-Op appointment, Dr. Farahmand will give you speci c instructions as to which medications to avoid before and after surgery.

She will also review with you your before and after instructions. Vital signs and photos will be taken. You will be able to ask the doctor any questions you have about your upcoming surgery. The staff will also provide you with a set of written instructions for before and after the surgery.

The Surgery Abdominoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure. You will be able to speak with the Anesthesiologist before the surgery to ask any questions. The surgery takes anywhere from 1 to 3 hours depending on the size of the patient and whether or not liposuctioning is being performed. Drains are inserted which will later be removed in Dr. Farahmand’s o ce. A compression garment will also be applied in the recovery room.

Recovery

Dr. Farahmand instructs her abdominoplasty patients to walk hunched over for one week after the surgery. This takes tension o of the incision as it is healing. For this reason, most patients stay at home the rst week. During the second week, patients are encouraged to stand up straight and resume light household activities. Some patients with desk jobs return to work this second week. By the third week, most patients have returned to work. However, if the patient’s job requires them to be on their feet all day or to do a lot of walking, they may want to take more time off. No heavy lifting or exercise is allowed for 6 weeks. The drains will be removed once the drainage amounts have decreased in volume and when the uid has lightened in color. The purpose of the drains is to help prevent infection by removing uid. Dr. Farahmand instructs her patients to wear the compression wrap for 3 weeks after the surgery and she gives patients scar care instructions.
