GROWING AN ABUNDANT FUTURE

Dear DSHA Community,

With every successful school year that passes, we find ourselves reflecting on the academic accomplishments, faithformation opportunities, athletics and fine arts achievements, and more that allow our students to develop into confident and capable young women of faith, heart, and intellect. During the 2023-24 school year, our scriptural theme came from John 10:10: ”I came that they may have life and live it abundantly.” As two DSHA graduates from the 1990s, we have seen the school community live abundantly since our own graduation with new honors programs implemented, a heightening interest in STEM, a robust Campus Ministry program, steady growth in our DSHA Athletic Program, statewide Fine Arts awards, and more. As witnesses to this, we are looking toward a bright future of growth and abundance, complete with the launch of our Forward in Faith: Elevating Empowered Young Women campaign.

FORWARD IN FAITH: ELEVATING EMPOWERED YOUNG WOMEN CAMPAIGN

As alumnae, we have a unique view of the improvements and changes we have seen to the DSHA campus throughout the years. Although updates have been made to campus, Dashers and faculty have continued to use the same classrooms and spaces since 1954. As our students continue to grow and evolve, we want to ensure a safe, secure, and welcoming environment in which to engage, learn, and pray. This multi-million-dollar investment will allow us to renovate student spaces for 21st-century learning, expand our STEM environment with additional labs, develop outdoor competitive athletic fields, strengthen DSHA’s longevity through our growing endowment, and more.

We are excited for this new phase of growth in our school and believe that every member of our community is a beneficiary of the vision, dedication, and past generosity of parents, alumnae, and friends, along with our sponsoring order, the Sisters of the Divine Savior and the legacy founders of Holy Angels Academy, the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We are stewards of the school, responsible for not only preserving the legacy of DSHA’s faithful excellence, but preparing it and its students for the future.

GROWING OUR COLLEGE-PREP ACADEMICS

The DSHA Class of 2024 crossed the graduation stage on May 24, with nearly 60% of Dashers planning to pursue a STEM-related field. DSHA offers 18 total AP classes: half of those are in a STEM discipline. Our AP test scores continue to far out-pace the national average, with 85% of our students scoring high enough to be eligible for college credit compared to only 67% nationally. The STEM Scholars Program, designed for motivated students who are curious about and willing to engage in learning and applying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, has grown from 23 members since its inception in 2020 to 95 in the 2023-24 school year. The SMART (Students Modeling a Research Topic) Team presented their research alongside university and graduate students at the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) conference in San Antonio, TX. Meanwhile, the DSHA/MUHS Robotics Team finished the season within the top 1% of FIRST® Robotics high school teams worldwide. As DSHA continues to offer one of the strongest STEM education programs in the region, our student interest is outpacing our current facilities.

In response, this campaign will improve our 50-year-old STEM education facilities to meet the direct needs and interests of our students and faculty. It will reshape the fourth floor to add specific labs for physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, and computer science while adding space for collaborative projects and learning. Additionally, this campaign will update classroom furnishings, the elevator, bathrooms, HVAC, and electrical systems throughout the building. These renovations will have a pronounced impact on efficiency and comfort while enhancing the DSHA environment for continued academic excellence.

GROWING OUR NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED ATHLETIC PROGRAM

The 2023-24 school year was another banner year for DSHA Athletics, securing four state championships in Varsity Golf, Volleyball, Rugby, and Doubles Tennis. Every DSHA fall sport was represented at its respective state championship this year—a first for a fall athletics season in DSHA history. Varsity Golf secured the first WIAA State Championship in school history, Varsity Volleyball repeated as WIAA State Champions, and the Varsity A-Side Rugby team finished as national runners-up. With 15 sports offered across 39 teams, DSHA has the most offerings for girls in the state of Wisconsin. As our students excel on and off the field, it is time to upgrade our athletic facilities.

Upgrading our current facilities will allow us to effectively use space on our campus and build top-quality practice and competitive fields for lacrosse, field hockey, soccer, rugby, and softball. The ability to practice, play, and host games on our campus will foster greater participation, bolster the sense of community, bring more individuals to our campus, and add a layer of safety for our Dashers to compete at their school. DSHA has started to grow that safety component, with an additional 36 student parking spaces added over the summer of 2024. This is the beginning of a process to properly accommodate everyone on campus.

GROWING OUR LONGEVITY

As we look forward to an abundant future at DSHA, we cannot help but reflect on our time here as students. We were both shaped by the DSHA experience—and have become faith-filled women who accepted the gospel call to live lives that make a difference. As we want to ensure every young woman in Milwaukee has the option to attend DSHA, the health of our endowment is more important than ever. Every $1 million we raise towards our endowment overtime provides an additional $40,00-$50,000 annually, impacting the lives of five to seven additional young women through scholarships. These scholarships allow us to continue to enroll the strongest student body possible, including a commitment to a diverse group of young women with different interests, gifts, perspectives, and life experiences. Our endowment gives the ongoing gift of a DSHA education—and allows young women to enroll for years to come.

GROW YOUR IMPACT

We realize an effort like this requires involvement from the entire DSHA community including parents, past parents, grandparents, alumnae, faculty, staff, and friends of DSHA. Investments in our learning environment and beyond will ensure DSHA students continue to receive a life-changing, dynamic, faith-filled, and whole-person educational experience. If you’d like to be involved in this campaign initiative, consider committing a five-year pledge, or simply praying for our students, faculty, and staff. Your support truly makes a difference in the lives of our young women.

We look forward to growing in abundance together this upcoming year and beyond.

Thank you.

With deepest gratitude,

Maureen Carney Goetz, DSHA ‘96 Board Chair

CONTINUING THE DSHA TRADITION

OF EXCELLENCE

Dean and Mary Klinger have always been passionate about education and the opportunities, growth, and whole-person development an outstanding education can provide. Dean, a physician, and Mary, a community volunteer, have financially given to DSHA for over two decades and are now supplying an incredibly generous $1,000,000 gift for the new competitive athletic fields for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, and rugby, as part of the Forward in Faith: Elevating Empowered Young Women campaign.

Nearly 64% of DSHA students participate in athletics, with 73% having a 3.5 GPA or higher. DSHA has earned a competitive reputation with state and national team championships across 15 varsity sports –including ten national championships and 46 Wisconsin Team State Championships. DSHA was also one of the WIAA 2023-24 Award of Excellence recipients. As one of only two schools to receive the award for the sixth time since its inception in 2016, DSHA was the only Catholic school represented in the state. With such high demand for athletic space, and a record of athletic excellence, it is time to upgrade the outdoor facilities. The ability to practice, play, and host games on DSHA’s campus will allow for greater participation, help bolster the sense of the school community, and add a layer of safety and convenience for all. It will also serve as an opportunity to bring additional people from across the Greater Milwaukee area to campus.

Over the last two decades the Klingers have supported DSHA education through classroom improvements, faculty professional development, and student scholarships. “The Forward in Faith campaign has opened our eyes to support DSHA in a new way. Having our daughter now serve as faculty and helping coach, brought us back to the sports realm,” they shared. As Dean and Mary have returned to DSHA more frequently to support Katie in her endeavors, they have seen a need for an improvement to the athletic facilities on campus.

Their daughter, Katie Klinger Leszczynski, DSHA ’10, has been part of the DSHA community as a student, faculty member, and soccer coach. Beginning as Social Studies Faculty in 2021, she transitioned to leading the St. Angela Merici Academic Support

Mary and Dean Klinger with their daughter, Katie Klinger Leszczynski, DSHA ‘10, at DSHA Graduation.

Program as the school’s academic interventionist for the 2024-25 school year working with students with learning differences based on their individual academic needs. It was during Katie’s four years as a student, however, that both Dean and Mary realized how much DSHA was positively influencing her life.

Dean shared, “We felt that sending Katie to DSHA was important, as it provided a nurturing learning environment that fostered a sense of independence and allowed her to pursue her passions with confidence. We loved that it was a faith-based school with college-prep academics.”

Mary noted, “The students embrace each other—academically, musically, athletically, and socially. Every leadership position was held by another young woman, and that modeling and mentoring of leadership really impacted Katie. It gave her a world of opportunity that she may not have gotten elsewhere.”

Now, fourteen years after their daughter graduated from DSHA, they continue to give back to the school. Mary shared, “We saw what good it did for Katie. We wanted to continue giving that opportunity to others.” She continued, “I saw how prepared she was when she went off to college. She was well-equipped with writing, study, and time management skills. DSHA is the gift that keeps on giving, and oftentimes you don’t realize it until your daughter is a few years out.”

Dean agreed stating, “I’ve always said one of the best investments we’ve made was sending Katie to DSHA. You get a return on your investment—a happy, well-adjusted, empowered, and successful daughter.”

Committing themselves to giving at a larger capacity, they decided to support the Forward in Faith campaign and give their donation to the improvement of the athletics and outdoor fitness spaces. The two are excited about what this will bring to current and future Dashers. It adds to the experience as both a player and a student for an athlete to compete on her home campus, and will additionally foster school spirit.

Additionally, Dean shared, “it’s more than just supporting sports and athletics,” naming the safety component as an added benefit. He continued, “we’ve focused our donations on educational aspects for the past two decades. Now here is a chance for us to expand and improve campus facilities for these girls. We also don’t want a student to miss the opportunity to participate in athletics because practice and competitions are being held off campus.” Adding that the additional facility will allow many students to stay on site, as many current sports teams practice and compete elsewhere

Looking forward, they are hopeful that this donation will inspire others to give to the future of DSHA, just as other donors have inspired them. Dean stated, “we prioritize charitable giving, and education has always been a focus of ours. This donation frees up other financial contributions to go elsewhere for the school and we feel blessed that we’re able to support the growth of the campus.”

The Klingers hope that the rich history and traditions of the school continue for many years to come. “We want the young women who attend DSHA to enjoy participating in the full DSHA experience. It’s invaluable to have an environment for young women to realize how many options there are for their lives. The addition of these facilities will help round out the complete college preparatory high school experience.”

With DSHA listed in their trust, the Klinger family plans to continue financially supporting DSHA for many years to come.

The new competitive outdoor athletic fields will allow DSHA to practice, play, and host games on campus.

2023-24 DONOR CONTRIBUTIONS

The entire DSHA community — parents, friends, foundations, alumnae, businesses, and even our students — were generous in showing support through financial gifts to DSHA during the 202324 fiscal and academic year, contributing nearly $4 million to support current operations and scholarships. The following are our largest donor categories.

ANNUAL FUND | $772,041

The generous donors contributing to the DSHA Annual Fund help cover the gap between the cost of tuition and the full cost of a DSHA education. The annual fund supports the full Catholic, Salvatorian, all-girls high school experience—from scholarships that allow DSHA to enroll the strongest student body possible, to the outstanding college-preparatory academics, faith formation, co-curriculars, and support all students receive. Contributions to the annual fund are vital to form young women in faith, heart, and intellect.

ENDOWMENT | $798,537

The DSHA endowment provides enduring and generous support to students of today, tomorrow, and of the future, ensuring they will receive the premier Catholic, Salvatorian, college-preparatory education for young women in Milwaukee. The endowment supports scholarships for eager students and some extracurricular activities, as well as faculty professional development and competitive compensation.

DSHA AUCTION * |

$391,849

The DSHA community gathered in the R.J. Fridl Commons and the Chris & John McDermott Gymnasium for the 2024 Emerald Isle Auction. Funds raised during the live and silent auctions support the school’s general operating budget. A favorite portion of the evening occurs during Stop-The-Auction where attendees give in support of Dashers who would not have the means to attend DSHA without the help of generous donations, specifically supporting need-based scholarships. By raising a paddle, guests gave more than $195,754 for scholarships alone.

SPECIFIED GIFTS |

$1,825,611

Occasionally, donors wish to apply their gifts to a specific area of the overall DSHA experience, supporting a specific department, fine arts, athletics, or co-curriculars. These gifts support DSHA in developing the whole person in their students. This number includes gifts to the Forward in Faith Elevating Empowered Young Women campaign

SCHOLARSHIP |

$90,505

Scholarships at DSHA benefit all girls and allow for an outstanding all-girls, Catholic education with the strongest student body possible. This includes a financial and missionbased commitment to a diverse group of women with different gifts, perspectives, and life experiences. Nearly 50% of students receive some form of tuition assistance whether it be merit or need-based scholarships to receive a DSHA education. 95% of families who apply for financial aid receive some form of needbased scholarship upon acceptance, and the average need-based award is over $6,000.

DASH-A-THON * |

$82,353

Dash-A-Thon, the largest student-led fundraiser, is an annual school-wide 7-mile walk that provides students with fresh air, social time as a community, and a chance to dress in theme. The theme was Swimming into the School Year. Most importantly, the event gives students an opportunity to fundraise for and financially give to DSHA. Since it’s start nearly four decades ago, Dash-A-Thon has provided countless financial support for DSHA, supporting it’s mission and the experiences it gives to young women in Milwaukee.

PARENT ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

GOLF OUTING |

$71,562

Parents, alumnae, community members, and friends of DSHA have a PAR-TEE at the PAA Golf Outing, during which all monies raised go directly to the DSHA Athletic Department. The Parent Athletic Association’s only fundraiser, the outing helps provide the best coaches, trainers, and equipment to DSHA student athletes.

The STEM Scholars Program is designed for students who are curious about and willing to engage in learning and applying science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Since its inception in 2020, the program has grown from 23 students to 95 in the 2023-24 school year.

The Salvatorian Global Scholars Program, founded in the 2023-24 school year, was designed to help Dashers expand cultural knowledge, grow language proficiency, and foster involvement and collaboration in the global community with the intent to improve the quality of life for others worldwide. The class of 2024 graduated eight global scholars.

The STEM Scholars program has set me up for success in the future. It has opened doors for me that I did not entirely expect, and being surrounded by like-minded and similarly goal-oriented students has encouraged me further to pursue a STEM occupation. Through the program, I attended an all-female engineering panel where I was able to ask questions and hear of their experiences. Opportunities like this open my eyes as to how many options there are for women in the world of STEM.”

JERRY AWARD WINNERS

AND

INDIVIDUAL VOCAL & INSTRUMENTAL FIRST RATINGS AT THE WSMA FESTIVAL

The all-girls take on the classic Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Musical received eight Jerry Awards. The Jerry Awards, run by the Overture Center in Madison, recognizes excellence in high school musical theatre across Wisconsin. Four Dashers received the Outstanding Supporting Performance Award, one the Spirit Award, and staff received the Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Musical Direction, and Outstanding Lighting Award.

In addition to the Divine Strings Ensemble and the Angelaires, 15 vocal and instrumentalist students received first ratings at the Wisconsin School Music Association State Solo and Ensemble Festival. Yessica Rodriguez, DSHA ’25, was nominated and received the highly selective State Exemplary Performance Certificate for her violin solo.

“I’ve been playing violin for ten years and it was great to go to state and hear everyone else play. Everyone there is so talented, and plays so well, that it’s really inspiring to be around. I didn’t expect to win the Exemplary Performance Certificate and was honored when I did. I’m looking forward to enhancing my skills next year and becoming a leader in Orchestra & Divine Strings.

Yessica Rodriguez, DSHA ’25 | Exemplary Performance & First Rating Recipient

STUDENTS HELD CAMPUS MINISTRY LEADERSHIP POSITIONS

A core aspect of DSHA Campus Ministry is student leadership. From student officers and retreat coordinators to Mass coordinators, and more, Dashers work with their peers to create opportunities for prayer, worship, service, and social justice. This year, leaders worked together to raise over $8,000 for the Lenten Project that supported the Sisters of the Divine Savior’s Teaching Farm Project in Southern Tanzania. They also helped organize five unique retreats, several all-school prayer services, numerous service opportunities throughout the building, and more.

I became a Campus Ministry Student Officer to grow deeper in my faith and encourage my classmates to embrace the wonderful blessings God has placed in our lives. I wanted to take my faith to another level and help plan school events that connect us to our community. As a senior, Campus Ministry added immensely to my DSHA experience because it allowed me to become a woman of faith and try to live my faith to its fullest potential. I hope to share my faith, kindness, and love with the world.”

Hailey Bachmann, DSHA ’24 Campus Ministry Student Officer

MARIAN SCHOLARS

AND

MARIAN SCHOLAR PEER MENTORS

The Marian Scholars Program is an inclusive education program for students with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Dashers in the program are paired with peer mentor students who help them engage in class, implement curriculum modifications, and lend other support as needed.

“I love being in the Marian Scholars Program here. My (peer) mentors are very funny and they make me laugh every day. They take me to class, go on walks with me, and help me with my articles and schoolwork. I also love eating lunch with them and spending time with (Dining Services Supervisor) Connie (Hansen.) It doesn’t get much better than that!

DSHA brought home four state championship titles in Golf, Volleyball, Rugby, and Doubles Tennis. The Varsity Field Hockey & Varsity Ski team secured the state runner-up trophies while the A-Side Rugby team made a splash on the national stage again finishing as runner-up of the Single School National Rugby Invitational Championship.

When we think back on this (2023-24) season and state championship win, we won’t remember the hard practices or losses. Or even our (47-1) record. We will all look back and remember the team and the memories, and how we grew from our relationships with each other. We learned how to be leaders, and we learned about ourselves as players and teammates. Those are the things that last.”

LITURGIES CELEBRATED

Throughout the school year, students, faculty, and staff gathered for 12 All-School Masses in the Robert & Marie Hansen Family Fine Arts Theatre. These included a Welcome Mass; Foundation Day Mass; Homecoming Mass; All Saints Day Mass; Immaculate Conception Mass; Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass; Epiphany Mass; Catholic Schools Week Mass; Ash Wednesday Mass; an End of Year Mass, with Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki presiding over an all-school Mass in March. Additionally, 14 optional Faith Friday Masses were offered most weeks in the Mother of Our Savior Chapel. Students also had the option to attend 16 special/retreat Masses and 7 prayer services.

“I choose to serve at all-school Mass because I like to be involved and it’s an important way for me to feel connected to my faith. All-school Mass is really special, and it brings us all together as one faith community.

REPORTED SCHOLARSHIP DOLLARS

Dashers will be attending 65 schools throughout 27 states as well as Washington, D.C. and Scotland. The DSHA Class of 2024 received $26,892,310 in reported scholarship dollars to accepted colleges and universities with 100% of DSHA graduates going onto a four-year college or university. Additionally, 28% of the class of 2024 was accepted to a highly selective college or university (schools accepting 20% applicants of less) and/or an honors program.

I have grown so much in my self-confidence because of the classes, people, and opportunities DSHA has given me. I feel so prepared for my future endeavors in college and professionally because of the foundation DSHA has provided me with. I will attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison where I will study biochemistry. Because of the leadership and self-advocacy DSHA provided me, I can confidently and enthusiastically immerse myself into a STEM career.

Students enjoying the 40th Annual Dash-A-Thon in the 2023-24 school year

SITES SERVED DURING THE VOCARE SERVICE IMMERSION EXPERIENCE

Vocare, Latin for “to draw forth, to call,” is the capstone of each student’s four years of Salvatorian service. Each senior serves for two weeks in the greater Milwaukee community. By working alongside the elderly, children, those with special needs, or community outreach organizations, each student experiences many of the critical issues facing our community while gaining a deeper understanding of how she can utilize her God-given gifts and talents in service to others.

The amount of respect I have for all of the volunteers and staff at Fr. Gene’s is endless. Many of the volunteers are regulars who take the time out of their own lives to help others. I cannot wait to go back and see all of them again while serving, for they truly taught me how to serve.”

Abby Jens, DSHA ’24, (pictured far left), served at Father Gene’s Help Center during Vocare with Mia Ruge, DSHA ‘24 (center) and Adeline Lancaster, DSHA ‘24.

GIFTS IN MEMORY OF OTHERS

In 2023-24, generous donors made a difference in the lives of the young women of DSHA by making a gift honoring those who have made a difference in their own lives. These gifts are received in memory of a deceased family member, friend, alumnae, or supporter of DSHA.

SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS SUPPORTING DSHA

Scholarships are bridges — access to this outstanding educational opportunity for outstanding young women who do not have the financial means to experience DSHA. Scholarship sizes vary depending on a family’s financial need. Nearly 38 percent of DSHA students relied on scholarships, large and small, to attend DSHA in 2023-24.

Scholarships come in two different forms: endowed and non-endowed. Endowed scholarships provide permanent, perennial support for the type of student identified by the particular donor. Non-endowed scholarships are one-time gifts that support the type of student identified by the donor for immediate use.

ENDOWED FUNDS

AP COURSES AND DUAL-CREDIT COURSES

DSHA offers a number of opportunities for students to enter college with earned credits through both Advanced Placement courses and dual-credit courses across eight academic departments. DSHA established a new partnership with Marquette University in the 2023-24 school year, allowing a total of 12 dual-credit courses in addition to the 18 AP courses offered.

In 2023-24, 749 AP classes were taken by Dashers. 85% of exams scored high enough on the final AP exam to earn college credit, far out-pacing the 67% of exams that scored high enough to earn college credit globally for the same courses.

“The workload from my DSHA AP and dual-credit courses has really helped prepare me for my next steps at Northwestern University. It gave me a good idea of the material to expect at that level, and how much time I would need to dedicate to my schoolwork. I was challenged in these classes, but it was a great time to experience that struggle and learn resiliency and determination because now I have the confidence in myself to know I can get through it.
