Artist Statement

Injecting meanings into abstract images is a fascination of mine. I try to capture my own emotions, thoughts and influences onto abstract digital collages by using shapes and colors. The process of creating these works begins rather innocuously, down the path that I feel is most aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The less predictable part unfolds towards the end of the production, when the abstract objects are vitalized with my own memories and thoughts – they become symbols of one experience or another that have impressed me during the past twenty-four years of my life.

I am interested in creating something that is deeply personal to me. At the same time, I want others to be able to relate to and feel a sort of connection with the artist. I wanted to lay out my emotions in a work of art, when words are not enough to articulate many of those complex mental trajectories and associations. I’ve been pleasantly surprised to learn that someone with a different life than mine would look and see things I did not expect, but in ways that are still meaningful. Experiences that I have never had would make their way into the why and how of these works, and people would perceive things I did not intentionally place there. To me, this is not only an interesting extension of the art-making process, but its final and most fascinating chapter – a consummation, if you like.

Untitled (Fall Leaves 2009), Photographic print on canvas, 40 in x 40 in, Š2009 Miriam Son

In this piece I’ve used a trace of a leaf from the year 2009 and my fabvorite photographs of me, people and things. Each photograph is captured inside a leaf trace, symbolizing how my experiences nurture my growth the way leaves fall and make it possible for new life to begin in the coming year.

Untitled (Networking), Photographic print on canvas, 40 in x 40 in, Š2009 Miriam Son

This piece is a representation of how much wired I am through media. I wanted to express the speed of our communication through wires that are hidden from us.

Untitled (Checking Over The Walls of Ice), Photographic print on canvas, 40 in x 40 in, Š2009 Miriam Son

The individuals captured inside of imaginary icebergs glance over their walls of ice at their neighbors, but never step out of their space because of some kind of fear.

Untitled (Grandmom’s Dress), Photographic print on canvas, 40 in x 40 in, ©2010 Miriam Son

This piece reminds of my grandma’s dress. It is fascinating to run into a pattern that reminds me of a such an important person in my life as my grandmother.

Untitled (The Wave), Photographic print on canvas, 40 in x 40 in, Š2010 Miriam Son

This piece is reminiscent of a famous woodblock printing, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, by the Japanese artist Hokusai. This is what I remember of the ocean as I looked down from an airplane.

Untitled (Lines), Photographic print on canvas, 30 in x 30 in, Š2010 Miriam Son

When I made this piece, it reminded me of something that is so beautiful that it initially attracts you - but after a while you figure out it is a trap. But you can’t get out of it because it has consumed you with its beauty.

Untitled (Moonlight), Photographic print on canvas, 40 in x 40 in, Š2010 Miriam Son

I made this piece listening to the piano sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven, popularly known as the Moonlight Sonata.

Untitled (Dance of Colors), Photographic print on canvas, 40 in x 40 in, Š2010 Miriam Son

The dynamic moves of the purple and yellow make it seem as though these colors were dancing on the canvas - like outer space, where beautiful stars and galexies are.
