What I like to remember In our society, temperance will not help a poor man to enrich himself, but it may help him to respect himself. Good work will not make him a rich man, but good work may make him a good workman. - G.K. Chesterton [The Fallacy of success]

Based on the Ancient Greek Gymnasium Gymnasium is a place where body, mind, and spirit; which is sport, learning, and living, are brought back together as they should be.
Conceptual Spatial Arrangement The program is for a mixed use building combining sports courts, specialist retail, dining, learning, and residences, to be presented as a unique hybrid of classical form in a modern finish.

The Facade The facade of the Gymnasium is a result of the logical placing of exterior openings. The windows serve to supply wide views of the surrounding city as well as to bring in large volumes of light into the heavily interior oriented building. Light is given the opportunity to stream through the building, but small scale spaces on the interior keep the appropriate level of exposure when East Facade Sketch

Planning For Small Footprints With a building footprint of just under 1000s.f. it was imperative that rooms were both spacious and efficient. In this design, transparency and tall vertical space were key agents. Second Floor Plan

Connected Functionality The Niles Farmer’s Market proposal aims to educate locals of Michigan about the farming and processing industry and to encourage enjoyment of local food. Thus the interconnectivity of farming, processing, and retail is built into the spaces of the market and the entire site plan.

Local farmers can roam the site and acquaint themselves with the retail space, while consumers can visit the greenhouse restaurant or the on-site educational farm at the rear.
