Benton Harbor Food Market

Roxanna Torres-Colon

(352)213-8208 – roxanna.torrescolon@yahoo.com

The Market The market is a place for local Michigan farmers to sell their goods to both large companies and locals. The market is designed to be able to convert to be a comfortable day market as well as a market for large trucks to be able to queue up and drive through to collect the produce. In the north west corner of the market there is a comfortable lounge area for the farmers to be able to gather.

The Great Hall The main building in the Benton Harbor Food Market project is the great hall which is on axis with the central courtyard and is flanked by the administration offices on the north side and on the south by a catering kitchen and a cafe. The Great hall is available for flexible uses such as weddings, presentations, and exhibitions. The main room is a two story open space with a catwalk that allows for visitors to look down to the activity that is happening on the main floor. A gallery space is provided for on the second story which can also be rented for different uses or for large meetings. The gallery space is then directly connected to the perimeter catwalk in the Great Hall main room. The catering kitchen which is adjacent with the Great Hall is connected by an access alley which has doors to close off the alley when it is in use for a function. The Great Hall is fronted by a colonnade which allows for people to comfortably linger around the main entrance.

Lincoln Park Town House

Roxanna Torres-Colon

(352)213-8208 – roxanna.torrescolon@yahoo.com

Wall Sections The different sections detail different wall conditions that would be found in the Lincoln Town House. The details range from parapet details to window details. Taking into consideration a thin wall system was important for this project was important because of the restricting site size.

New Niles

Roxanna Torres-Colon

(352)213-8208 – roxanna.torrescolon@yahoo.com

The Process The Niles Block Project was a unique opportunity to help make a New Niles and the correct location of the uses was important. The Housing is located towards the river while the offices and retail buildings are located towards the main road with an open central parking and utility court yard which allows for the perimeter of the property to be used.

Winter Solstice

Day Lighting The building that was developed further in the Niles Block was at the South East corner of the property, because of this precarious location day lighting needed to be addressed. On the East face of the building the colonnade provided sufficient shading for the first floor and the second and third floor is equipped with a permanent louver system that is suspended in front of the window glazing. The angle of the Louvers are done to prevent the low morning eastern sun from allowing glare. On the south side of the building the sun is blocked during the summer times with permanent overhangs over the windows which then also allow for winter sun to come in and warm the space during the winter months. The West side is also treated with the same louver system as the East face of the building.
