ABOUT THE IOWA HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATER AWARDS

The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards (IHSMTA) program celebrates the extraordinary achievements of Iowa’s young musical theater artists - from the performers on stage to the musicians and technical crew. We celebrate each and every school that makes musical theater a part of their students’ learning experience.

Throughout the year students and educators benefit from:

· EXPERT FEEDBACK provided by theater professionals who attend and review each participating musical

· LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES which provide practical instruction, taught by local and national theater professionals

· AWARDS SHOWCASE uplifting the achievements of schools and students on the Des Moines Civic Center stage

The IHSMTA program is designed to be celebratory rather than directly competitive. Any student or school at an outstanding level is recognized for their achievements and multiple honorees may be named in each category as performances merit.

“IHSMTA

programming is without a doubt the most impactful and meaningful experience we can provide to our students, not only through the constructive feedback we receive, but also through the numerous learning opportunities available to us.”

2024 IMPACT AWARD RECIPIENTS

The Impact Award recognizes educators and community members who go above and beyond to support the high school musical theater experience. Student nominations and testimonials from colleagues, parents and administrators were reviewed to determine this year’s honored recipients.

BRENDA HEITHOFF

Assistant Choreographer & Community Volunteer, Coon Rapids-Bayard Nominated by Maddy Mason, 10th Grade

Community volunteer Brenda Heithoff provides bedrock support to the Coon Rapids-Bayard theater program. From assistant choreographing, to hunting down and making props in her spare time, to being present at every rehearsal to jump in wherever most needed, she is always willing to lend a hand. Student Maddy Mason reports that her efforts and kindness make her “a great role model…we cannot thank Brenda enough.”

TIM SHEAFF

Director, Dowling Catholic

Nominated by Maggi Doud, 12th Grade

Dowling Catholic students honor Tim Sheaff, who led the school’s theater department for 34 years until his unexpected passing last summer. His impact continues to be felt, with students reflecting on the life lessons he taught them about work ethic and perseverance, the value of relationships, and the immense privilege it is to make art together. Student Maggi Doud shares “Mr. Sheaff loved what he did, and he passed that love onto all of us.”

MARLO VAN PEURSEM

Director, Pella Christian

Nominated by Abby Dart, 12th Grade

Pella Christian celebrates the leadership of Marlo Van Peursem, or VP as most of the students and staff call him. He teaches performers and designers confidence, to trust themselves, and to tell important stories through theater – all with an eye on how participating in theater will help students reach their dreams no matter their future pathway. Student Abby Dart shares a common phrase you will hear from him: “Theatre can be used in EVERY SINGLE occupation”.

Kayla Weis

Director, Harlan

Nominated by Scarlett McGuiness, 12th Grade

Harlan students have benefited from the vision and compassion of theater director Kayla Weis. Prior to her arrival, students at Harlan had only one theater opportunity a year. Now, the school presents multiple shows a year and has an active drama club and theater class. Additionally, “Ms. Weis has created an environment where students can relax fully in the knowledge that they are safe, loved, and accepted,” writes student Scarlett McGuiness. “She makes sure her students feel seen as they are.”
